ALMOST OVERNIGHT, TWO FRIENDS GREW FROM “TOURNAMENT ROOKIES” TO NATIONALLY RANKED LOWE PRO STAFF CHAMPS, READY AND WILLING TO TAKE ON FIERCE COMPETITION Story by Amy Wideman Photos by Lance Ramsey, John Quarles & Steve Shelton For the past two years, fishing partners John Quarles and Steve Shelton have enjoyed huge success on the walleye circuit. The pair moved swiftly up the ranks from their local Colorado fisheries to qualify at regionals for a spot in the 2014 Cabela’s National Team Championship (NTC). And yet they had worked together for nearly seven years before it even occurred to them that fishing could be their fate. “Funny story,” John begins. “We were sitting in Steve’s office at work one day, where we’d been putting in long hours, pretty stressful. We looked at each other and said, ‘There must be more to life than this. We should buy a boat.’ And literally, we logged onto Craigslist right then and started searching for used boats.” Luckily for the work-worn friends, there happened to be a Lowe Fish & Ski 165 for sale in Pueblo, just a few hours from their respective homes in Colorado. It turned out to be exactly what they had in mind: a deep-V style fishing boat in good condition, at the right price. Its soon-to-be-former owner took them out for a run, and that clinched it: Their fish tale had officially begun.

With the boat aspect settled, they decided their next logical step was to join a fishing club. They credit the Colorado Walleye Association with building their confidence and sparking a love for tournament fishing almost immediately. “I have to say, anyone who wants to learn should join a club,” John says. “You go out fishing in groups, and go to dinners together where everyone talks about baits and how to rig things up. A lot of knowledge comes out of those dinners. In just a month or so, we were signed up for a whole series of tournaments.” In their spare time, they each supplemented the club members’ advice through research and watching “a LOT” of videos. (They cite Fishful Thinker host and angling mentor Chad LaChance as a particularly influential coach.) Their dedication paid off. Less than a year after purchasing their Lowe, they were competing—and winning. “It was quick!” Steve says. “The first tournament we competed in, we won prize money. We almost couldn’t believe it. We’re thinking, ‘We get paid for this? This is awesome!’ And of course we took that prize check straight to the sporting goods store that very same day—drove straight from the lake, boat and all—for more fishing gear. We were hooked.” The guys noticed something interesting. People were arriving at tournaments with big, expensive boats and crazy amounts of high-end equipment. “Here we are on our 16-foot Craigslist boat.

We’re thinking, are we crazy? Nope. Turns out, our boat is just as capable as any of those flashy boats.” Quickly they earned a reputation as “the Lowe Boys,” pulling in wins with the best of ’em. After about a year, they decided an upgrade to something bigger was in order. The FS was performing admirably, but they wanted a slightly larger platform from which to compete. “We didn’t consider anything other than a Lowe,” says John. It took a concerted effort, since no dealership in Colorado actually sold the brand. But by working directly with Lowe and a liaison at Cabela’s in neighboring Nebraska, they were able to land their dream boat—as newly-minted members of the Lowe Pro Staff, no less. And so it was with a new Fishing Machine 185 in tow that they set out for Green Bay, Wisconsin, to compete at the NTC—a.k.a.

WE WERE HOOKED. “the Super Bowl of walleye tournaments”—fishing right alongside the stars whose fishing videos had first shown them the ropes. The friends cite the FM 185’s two livewells as a crucial feature during competitions, keeping every catch alive and in good shape, lest they suffer penalty deductions at weigh-in. “You net it and literally drop it next to you,” John says. “We can both be catching and dropping at the same time.” The boat’s Deep-V hull, paired with a powerful Mercury Verado® 150-hp engine, is also a plus. “Sometimes it’s over an hour to reach our fishing spot. At speed our Lowe is a very stable boat, a smooth ride. Even in big chop, it stays dry.” Yet it’s not all about fishing. “We both have families with kids, so it’s really nice to be able to convert the FM into a ski boat,” Steve says. “The aft deck that converts from a fishing platform into seating is really versatile. We’ll take the kids out tubing and have a great time.” “Plus, it’s a gorgeous boat,” John adds. “We keep it shiny and polished to make sure it gets good exposure out there on the water.” “We get lots of compliments,” Steve agrees. “People are like, Wow, that’s a nice looking boat!” After Nationals, the pair made a detour down to Lowe Boats’ headquarters in Lebanon, Missouri, for a tour of the facility. “With my history in aerospace as a quality manager, it was really a treat to see the manufacturing process,” John says. “Their assembly line is extremely versatile, so they rely on actual craftsmanship. I mean, these guys are artisans at work.” Looking ahead, John and Steve are excited to compete in upcoming tournaments with the goal of securing an invitation to Nationals once again. They’ve been asked to speak at local fishing clubs, relaying “a year in the life of a tournament rookie.” Walleye remain their focus, but the bass circuit has also begun calling their name. With Colorado’s wealth of reservoirs and spectacular mountain views, they’re in a great spot to branch out. “It’s funny. There we were at Nationals, pre-fishing, and all these sponsored teams in their fully stickered-up boats pull up beside us,” John says. “And you know, you’re star struck—like, here’s everyone I’ve ever watched fishing on TV, and they’ve come to my fishing spot! Now that’s a compliment!” “And some days we actually out-fished them,” Steve adds with a smile. John sums it up nicely: “Ever since we got this boat, we’ve been living a charmed life.”

THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE THAT MAKE BELINDA FLEMING THE HAPPIEST.

Things like watching her young grandson, Blayne, cannonball off the front of their pontoon. Or helping her granddaughters, Addison and Emma, roast marshmallows and smash them between graham crackers along with a slab of chocolate. The little things are somehow the most vivid, the most tangible, the quickest to tickle the funny bone.

Belinda and her husband, Billy, own a Lowe SF 234 pontoon and use it to make memories with their two adult children and three grandchildren on nearby Stockton Lake. On most weekends, the family takes their RV to a campsite at Ruark Bluff West so they can spend as much time as possible on the water and on their Lowe boat. “It’s a fishing boat and a playing boat,” Belinda says. “And it has a very nice layout because you can fish off the front or the back. That’s sweet!” The Flemings, like most residents of southwestern Missouri, know a thing or two about savoring life’s precious moments. Ever since the ruthless EF5 multiple-vortex tornado struck the town of Joplin in late May of 2011, people around here have made it a point to appreciate the present. “You have to cherish what you have,” Belinda says, “because it can be gone in a second.” And what the Flemings have, they wouldn’t trade for anything. From the comfort of their SF 234, Belinda and Billy watch their son, Beau, help four-year-old Blayne up onto a low ledge for a mini-cliff jump. With admiration for his courage mixed with a hint of grandmotherly concern, Belinda gives her young grandson— who is already an excellent swimmer—a questioning look. “Oh, it will be okay, Nana,” Blayne says. He pauses for a moment and takes the plunge. A second later he reappears in the ripples formed where his tiny body had hit the lake’s surface. Belinda and Billy clap, and Blayne’s grin widens at the applause. Belinda and Billy bought their pontoon from the fine folks at Marine Center, Inc., in Joplin. “They were really good at hooking us up with what we wanted,” Belinda says. “They were really friendly. We looked at a lot of boats, but the Lowe was just set up perfectly for what we wanted. I just kept saying, ‘Billy, I want that boat.’” The Flemings were looking to buy a craft that was suitable for watersports like skiing and tubing. “They’re a hoot when we’re out on the lake,” she says of her grandchildren. “They like to tube double.” A 115-hp ELPT Mercury‰ FourStroke provides the getup-and-go to haul the kids around Stockton and get their adrenaline flowing. Plus, Belinda says, “That thing is so quiet, you don’t even hear it at all.”

With their passion for camping, the Flemings also needed something durable and maneuverable. “On a pontoon, you can boat right up to the bank,” Belinda explains. “And if you drag on the pontoon, it’s not that big of a deal. Plus, we can get right up to where the fish are.” That was the other requirement; the boat had to be set up for fishing and have accessories like an aerated livewell, a fishfinder, rod holders and storage, because as Belinda says, “That lake is the bomb. We fish for anything: walleye, bass, crappie, catfish and drum.” Belinda is pleased to be able to be making the same memories with her grandkids as she remembers of her own childhood. Her parents always had a boat, and she recalls spending long, sunsoaked days with cooling dips in the lake and plenty of fish on the line. Catch-and-release is Addison’s passion, while swimming suits Emma just fine. Stockton Lake features 300 miles of shoreline, mostly surrounded by lush foliage that provides seclusion for deer and turkey and also nesting spots for the occasional bald eagle. The lake is never crowded, but boaters tend to gather at a “party cove” that used to be an old rock quarry and is a popular cliff-jumping spot. When the Flemings, who live in Alba, Missouri, aren’t on the water, they’re usually out on the road, either trucking or biking.

Billy has been a longtime trucker for Tyson, and Belinda usually joins him on his way to Indiana, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. They truck as much as they can in the winter when the lake is frozen over and it’s too cold or icy to be out on their motorcycles. The Flemings are avid Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. They occasionally attend rallies, but most often they just enjoy touring the countryside. They were out on a trip in nearby Arkansas when they first heard the news about the 2011 tornado. The first thing Belinda did was get on the phone and call her kids. Daughter Kasee (Addison’s mom) was safe inside a local Walmart, but she wasn’t able to get ahold of Beau (Emma and Blayne’s father). He was enduring a harrowing experience underneath a highway overpass. The Fleming family survived the ordeal unscathed, but Belinda says returning to town was an eerie experience. “When Bill and I came back on our bikes,” she says, “we could not figure out where we were. There were no landmarks. It was something you would see in a movie.” The Flemings have always had a passion for making the most of every moment, but now they do so even more than ever. “We truck hard and we play hard,” Belinda says with a smile that proves she means it.
