Dean John Grant

Bishop Matthew Quinn

Father in heaven, Holy be your name! Thank you for the blessings you have given to our local church of Bathurst in these 150 years: and in the thousands of years you were with the original peoples of this land. We are sorry for the times we have not loved you and our neighbour as you created us to do. In your mercy, renew our hope and strength to walk in your way today. Send again the Holy Spirit to make your Son present in us your people, that all may come to life in him.

+ Michael McKenna June 2015

Amen

SCRIPTURE READINGS A reading from Isaiah (12:2-6) Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, For the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; Make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. The word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God PSALM 100 - (Christopher Willcock) Cantor: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. All: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. Cry out with joy to the Lord all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before God singing for joy. All: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. Know that the Lord is God who made us to whom we belong. We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. All: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. Go in the temple gates giving thanks. Enter the courts with songs of praise. Give thanks to God and bless the Lord’s name. All: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. See then how good is the Lord whose love is eternally strong. God is faithful from age to age. All: We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock. We are God’s people, the sheep of the flock.

SECOND READING From Paul to the Thessalonians (5:16-18) “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”. The word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halleluia! Halleluia! This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice! Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-ia! Halleluia! Halleluia! GOSPEL A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (5:13-16) “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restores? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven”. The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! HOMILY - Reverend Dr Michael Semmler

Vespers (Evening Prayer) 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

A CONCLUSION TO THE LAUNCH OF CELEBRATIONS FOR THE SESQUICENTENARY OF THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF BATHURST

FRIDAY 19TH JUNE

INTRODUCTION - STAND Bishop: O God, come to our aid. All: O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. HYMN Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. PSALM 109 (110)

The Messiah, king and priest

“He must be king so that he may put all his enemies under his feet” (1 Cor 15:25). Ant: In holy splendour I begot you before the dawn, alleluia. The Lord’s revelation to my Master: ‘Sit on my right: your foes I will put beneath your feet.’ The Lord will wield from Zion your sceptre of power: rule in the midst of all your foes. A prince from the day of your birth on the holy mountains; from the womb before the dawn I begot you. The Lord has sworn an oath he will not change. ‘You are a priest for ever, a priest like Melchizedek of old.’ The Master standing at your right hand will shatter kings in the day of his wrath. He shall drink from the stream by the wayside and therefore he shall lift up his head. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Ant: In holy splendour I begot you before the dawn, alleluia. PSALM 111 (112)

How blessed are the just

“Be like the children of the light; for the fruits of the light are seen in complete goodness and right living and truth” (Eph 5:8,9). Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall have their fill. Happy the man who fears the Lord, who takes delight in all his commands. His sons will be powerful on earth; the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in his house; his justice stands firm for ever. He is a light in the darkness for the upright: he is generous, merciful and just. The good man takes pity and lends, he conducts his affairs with honour. The just man will never waver: he will be remembered for ever. He has no fear of evil news; with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord. With a steadfast heart he will not fear; he will see the downfall of his foes. Open-handed, he gives to the poor;†his justice stands firm for ever.* His head will be raised in glory. The wicked man sees and is angry,†grinds his teeth and fades away;* the desire of the wicked leads to doom. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall have their fill. CANTICLE:

The wedding of the Lamb

Praise God, all you his servants, both great and small. Alleluia. Alleluia. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, his judgements are true and just. Alleluia. Alleluia. Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns, let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory. Alleluia. Alleluia. The marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Alleluia. Alleluia. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. Alleluia. Praise God, all you his servants, both great and small. Alleluia. SHORT READING

Hebrews 12:22-24

What you have come to is Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem where the millions of angels have gathered for the festival, with the whole Church in which everyone is a ‘first-born son’ and a citizen of heaven. You have come to God himself, the supreme Judge, and been placed with spirits of the saints who have been made perfect; and to Jesus, the mediator who brings a new covenant and a blood for purification which pleads more insistently than Abel’s. SHORT RESPONSORY Great is our Lord; great is his might. – Great is our Lord; great is his might. His wisdom can never be measured. – Great is our Lord; great is his might. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. – Great is our Lord; great is his might. STAND CANTICLE: Magnificat If anyone wishes to come after me, they must deny themselves and take up the cross, and in that way they must follow me. My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever. Praise Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Both now and forever, world without end. Amen. If any man wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up the cross, and in that way he must follow me PRAYERS AND INTERCESSIONS In the Church, God has made known to us his hidden purpose: to make all things one in Christ. Let us pray that his will may be done. - Father, unite all things in Christ. We give you thanks for the presence and power of your Spirit in the Church: give us the will to search for unity, and inspire us to pray and work together. - Father, unite all things in Christ. We give you thanks for all whose work proclaims your love: help us to serve the communities in whose life we share. - Father, unite all things in Christ. Father, care for all who serve in the Church as ministers of your word and sacraments: may they bring your whole family to the unity for which Christ prayed. - Father, unite all things in Christ. Your people have known the ravages of war and hatred: grant that they may know the peace left by your Son. - Father, unite all things in Christ. We pray for the people, priests and religious who have served the Diocese of Bathurst. - Father, unite all things in Christ.

Fulfil the hopes of those who sleep in your peace: bring them to that final resurrection when you will be all in all. - Father, unite all things in Christ. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Lord God, teach us at all times to fear and love your holy name, for you never withdraw your guiding hand from those you establish in your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. EXPOSITION - HYMN: LET ALL MORTAL FLESH KEEP SILENCE Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descending, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood; he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descending from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High! SILENT PRAYER AND ADORATION Let us pray. After a brief period of silence, the minister continues: Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your suffering and death. May our worship of this sacrament of your Body and Blood help us to experience the salvation you won for us and the peace of the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. All: Amen. THE DIVINE PRAISES Blessed be God. Blessed be his holy name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Blessed be the name of Jesus. Blessed be his most Sacred Heart. Blessed be his most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be Jesus in the Poorest of the Poor. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.

BENEDICTION

HYMN: Down in adoration falling Lo, the sacred host we hail; Lo, o'er ancient forms departing, Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith for all defects supplying, Where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son who reigns on high, With the Spirit blest proceeding Forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honour, blessing, Might, and endless majesty. Amen.
