8 décembre Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name ; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our dail bread ; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us ; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen

LYON REMEMBERS 1638
The children of the town were struck by a serious epidemic of scurvy (scorbitus) and no reliable cure could be found. The people of Lyons decided to go in procession to Fourvière. The outbreak gradually diminished and finally disappeared. There has never been any recurrence.
1643
The plague raged in Europe. The Town Magistrates took a pledge to go toFourvière, light a candle and makean offering every year if Lyons were spared. This tradition continues every year on 8th September.
1832
The town was threatened by an outbreak of cholera which affected the neighbouring regions. The Archbishop ordered prayers in public. Once again the people of Lyons escaped scourge and to show their gratitude to Mary for her intercession they had a huge painting done (“the painting by Orsel”) hanging at the rear of the Basilica.
1852
The chapel belfry in Fourvière is crowned by a gilded, bronze statue of Mary in recognition for her maternal protection. The inauguration of the statue had to be postponed because of a violent thunderstorm : instead of the planned fireworks display, the people of the town placed small candles in their windows.
1870
War raged. The Prussians threatened to invade Lyons. The people and their Archbishop vowed to erect a huge church dedicated to Mary if the town were spared war. In 1872, they started building the Basilica.
Today
Thousands of ex-voto (marble plaques, paintings…) testify to the confidence the people have shown to Our Lady of Fourvière and the many graces thy have received through her intercession. Every day hundreds of candles are lighted to show gratitude, make a request or simply in prayer.
What about YOU? What would you like to ask from God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary?
