early 300 couples celebrating one, 25 or 50 and more years of marriage renewed their wedding vows and received the blessing of their bishop during the Diocese of Trenton’s 2015 Bishop’s Anniversary Blessing Masses that took place Oct. 11 and 25.

Hosted by St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, and St. Robert Ken Falls photo Bellarmine Parish, Freehold, the annual celebrations brought out family and friends to share in the joyful occasion with the couples of honor.

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M, affirmed the men and women as “witnesses of a life well-lived.” He asked that God “will continue to pour down happiness and health and blessings for many, many more years.”

he Bishop’s Anniversary Blessing Masses, which were celebrated this year in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, and St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Freehold, Oct. 11 and 25 respectively, recognized nearly 300 couples hailing from Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties who marked milestones in their marriages this year. They are listed here and in the pages that follow according to parish. Many couples also responded to The Monitor’s invitation to send in their wedding photos, or a photo from another special occasion they shared together. Their photos can be found in alphabetical order running through page A12.

The Monitor takes this opportunity to honor and celebrate the lived examples of love and fidelity that these milestone anniversary couples offer this diocesan community.

Married in Christ Anniversary couples honored for their love, loyalty and faith

elebrating two Masses for married couples marking milestone anniversaries in the Diocese, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., thanked them for their fidelity and the commitment they made to one another in Christ through the Sacrament of Matrimony.

“What a great joy it is for me as your Bishop to celebrate you, to celebrate your married life, to celebrate your commitment, to celebrate your great fidelity and the grace that God has filled your life with,” Bishop O’Connell said to the more than 200 couples from Monmouth and Ocean Counties who gathered for the Anniversary Blessing Mass that he celAFTER ALL THESE YEARS • St. Robert Bellarmine parishioners, ebrated Oct. 25 in St. Robert Bellarmine Richard and Pam Pezzullo, renew Church, Freehold. Sponsored by the diocesan Department of Youth, Marriage and Family Life, the Masses recognized couples marking wedding anniversaries of one, 25, 50 or more years of married life. In the company of their families, fellow parishioners and friends, the couples renewed their vows before Bishop O’Connell.

Local priests joined Bishop O’Connell at the altar and were on hand to greet the couples individually and offer them a blessing at the end of Mass.

Among the concelebrating priests in the Cathedral celebration were Msgr.

In St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, concelebrating priests included Msgr.

Sam Sirianni, pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, and Father Stanley P. Lukaszewski, whose appointment as episcopal vicar of Ocean County will become effective Jan 1.

The Bishop, in his homilies, tied the day’s Scripture readings into the theme of marriage and offered poignant messages to the couples.

For the Burlington and Mercer County couples Oct. 11, the Bishop reflected on the faith values that had stood the test of time of more than two millennia.

He said, “We see people getting married in all sorts of places, on beaches, on cruise ships, jumping out of airplanes or even having their wedding ceremony in Las Vegas with ‘Elvis’ himself as the minister.”

“You, however, decided to get married in the Church because you understand your marriage as a Sacrament, one of those seven outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace. You understood your marriage as something See Sacrament • A-6

rings at the renewal of vows as Bishop O’Connell blesses them, saying, “May these rings continue to be a symbol of their true faith in each other and always remind them of their love.”

not just between the two of you, but between the two of you and God. That is why we say that the Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant; it is a covenant between you and God. “Perhaps there is a lesson in the Gospel for married couples,” stated Bishop O’Connell. “What do we hold on to? What do we refuse to give up? What keeps the grace of this sacrament in check? What is that ‘one thing more’ that even after 25 or 50 years, the Lord is whispering to us to let go of?”

“Jesus has commanded us to love as he has loved…He loved until it cost him.

He loved all the way to the cross and death. That is love. If he had stopped loving before Calvary then it would not have been love at all. But love, in the sense that Jesus means, is loving even when it means undergoing suffering for the sake of the other. That is real love, loving for the good of the other.”

For the couples at the Oct. 25 celebration in Freehold, the Bishop recounted the Gospel which told of Jesus performing a miracle and restoring the sight of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar.

The Bishop said, “The world has known Jesus for 2,000 years. We, as Catholics, have known him all our lives since our Baptism. As we have grown over the years, we have connected with Jesus: through our parents and family; through religious education; through the sacraments; through our marriages; through the Church; through our faith. It is to the altar that we bring our joys, our sorrows, our needs, our prayers, the things that help us to face life in this world. From this altar we receive Christ and take him out those doors into our marriages, our families, our communities, our workplace, our lives.”

ers with warm, knowing smiles, renewed their vows to their spouses. Asking the couples to touch each other’s wedding bands, the Bishop blessed the rings saying, “May these rings continue to be a symbol of their true faith in each other and always remind them of their love.”

As they did on their wedding days, the couples shared a kiss much to the happiness of their family and friends who looked on with love.

As the Liturgy of the Eucharist unfolded, the couples participated in the Presentation of the Gifts and during the concluding rites, each milestone group was called separately to stand for the Bishop’s blessing.

To the couples marking one-year anniversaries, the Bishop prayed, “Bless these couples and continue to be their strength and their joy as they say yes to each day and to the vocation of marriage.

May they be a sign of your presence for their family and friends.”

Blessing the couples celebrating silver anniversaries, the Bishop said, “Bless these, your sons and daughters as they celebrate 25 years of marriage; a sign that reflects the union of Christ with his Church.”

To those married 50 years or more, the Bishop offered, “They give thanks for the blessings you have given them as they have lived their vocation of love and service to their families, their communities and the Church.”

At the conclusion of the two Masses the couples were invited to receive individual blessings by priests in attendance.

Afterward the couples joined their families for a reception where they enjoyed the opportunity to share loving memories from years of married life and watch the photographic slideshows of the anniversary couples on their wedding days that

were specially created for the occasion.

Peg Hensler, associate director, Department of Youth, Marriage and Family Life and coordinator of Marriage Ministries and Natural Family Planning, said, “I am always so pleased to see the large number of couples who’ve reached the milestone of 50 years of marriage or

more, and the reaction of the assembly as they are recognized for their steadfast commitment to each other. The enthusiastic, sustained applause at the Mass on October 25 for the 50+ anniversary couples demonstrated how much we all appreciate and need these true witnesses of lifelong marriage.”

‘Lived and Loved Experiences’

Couples share insights on what makes marriages successful, exciting ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

or many of the married couples who took part in the Diocese’s Anniversary Blessing Masses Oct. 11 and 25, the opportunity to gather with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., and have their marriages recognized and blessed made for cherished memories and an affirmation of their love and fidelity. Some shared reflections on their years together and even had advice for couples contemplating marriage.

Earle and Barbara Hughes of Corpus Christi Parish, Willingboro, spoke of how meaningful it was to receive assurances from the spiritual leader of the Diocese in this “51st-and-a-half” year of their marriage.

The couple, who proclaimed the First Reading during the Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, said they had marked their 25th anniversary year in the same way. Saying they felt “blessed and honored” to be present, they recalled the blessings they have received throughout the decades.

“We’ve experienced so much in our lives,” said Barbara, counting among those blessings her five children, now between the ages of 50 and 35 and foster children as well.

Their advice to those about to follow in their footsteps: walk together in faith.

“That’s what brought us here today,” said Earle. “We wouldn’t have made it without faith. It helped us get where we are today.”

Through everything, they both said, the Church has been at the center of life.

Ken Falls photo “It’s all about faith,” Barbara said. “That’s what kept us going, stretched us until we squeaked, pushed us to the limits and saw us through.”

Their fellow parishioners, Nick and Jean Giovine, offered similar sentiments.

“There have been so many trials and tribulations,” Jean recalled, adding “if you didn’t have faith, how would you survive?”

“And, without faith,” Nick remarked, “you wouldn’t have patience.”

The Giovines noted that they see the Church sending out strong messages in support of marriage by way of the recent visit of Pope Francis to the World Meeting of Families and the Synod of Bishops in Rome. The Church, they agreed, is going in the right direction.

Married 25 years, Dave and Mercedes Rizzo of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Marlton, came as a family to the Anniversary Blessing Mass, bringing their four grown children – Brendan, Collin, Danielle and Shannon. The couple expressed real joy in celebrating with so many long-married couples.

“It gives us something to look up to,” said Dave. They shared how important faith has been from the very beginning in their courtship and their marriage as they nurtured their long-term commitment to each other.

By way of example, Mercedes reached back to their Pre-Cana preparations.

In Pre-Cana, they presented scenarios that we might encounter including a child with a disability. We didn’t think it would be us,” she said, noting that Danielle has autism.

“It turned out to be prophetic,” said her husband, who added that in a marriage built upon faith, the couple has a “better chance of weathering storms.”

Speaking of those who came to the Mass, Dave referred back to the homily in which Bishop O’Connell spoke of marriage as a reflection of the covenant between God and mankind. “We see ourselves as couples with the love of God in com-

mon. It’s a binding force.”

First anniversary couple Debbie Macalad and Jason Burkett of Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Hamilton, were happy to talk about the role faith plays in their marriage.

“It’s what we both have in common; it’s what unites us,” said Debbie.

Jason’s advice to newlyweds like themselves: “No matter what, stick with it.”

Similarly, newlyweds Nola and Philip De Rita of St. Dominic Parish, Brick, reflected on what they have learned in their one year of married life.

“I think we’ve learned how to pray with each other, how to become more patient and sit down and talk about things, let faith be our guide,” Nola suggested. ‘If you make God the center of your life, there is nothing you can’t accomplish.

“The family is the backbone; it’s just crucial,” Philip added, as he looked around the church and the many examples of successful marriages standing before him. “It’s inspiring and joyous and something we aspire to.”

The De Ritas advise young couples to “Be open to the Holy Spirit.”

“Things change and as long as you are willing to let the Spirit move you, it’s all good,” Philip said.

Married for 65 years, Nina and Fritz Rodgers of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Freehold, reflected on the significance of having a faith-filled marriage.

“Our Lord has been there every moment, in

hard times, in bad times, in tragedies, it’s everything – our faith,” Nina emphatically offered.

Her husband advised, “Never go to bed angry, and never stay angry at one another.”

Ann-Marie and David DeStefano, who serve as youth ministers in St. James Parish, Red Bank, concurred.

“A big blessing in our lives is that we minister together, we are catechists together, we are youth ministers together,” Ann-Marie acknowledged. “We serve God together and that strengthens our marriage.”

After joking that his wife took his answer, David took a more serious tone, and offered this advice for couples: “Open your heart, let God guide you. He’ll never let you down.”

Calling to mind the recent World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia and the Synod on the Family, Ann-Marie noted the importance of the family in the world today.

“The family is the microcosm of the community-at-large; it’s the microcosm of what the Kingdom of God is supposed to be.”

While each couple recommended various secrets to marital success, two things were prevalent among their suggestions – keep Christ at the center of your marriage and keep a sense of humor.

“Always listen to your wife,” Al Petruccio of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish said of his wife of 57 years, Marie. In turn, Marie said, “And always love your husband.”
