Celebrating Couples Married... 1 YEAR

25 YEARS

50 + YEARS

Faith In Love Bishop shares lessons of unending, sacramental love as couples come together for Anniversary Blessings Masses By Rose O’Connor and Lois Rogers, Correspondents

T

here’s a lot of love in this room,” Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., said as he looked over a sea of smiling couples, each celebrating a milestone anniversary this year.

“Today is a wonderful occasion for us to celebrate marriage, your marriage, your anniversaries in the midst of a community of faith,” he said. “This is your Sacrament, and this Sacrament that brought you together, this Sacrament that kept you together is a bond that has become stronger and deeper and holier with the passage of time.” Whether it was the excitement of celebrating their first year together, the comfort that comes from 25, or the security and adoration found in 50 or more years, nearly 350 married couples of all ages

gathered with their family and friends in October for Anniversary Blessings Masses celebrated by Bishop O’Connell and concelebrated by priests from around the Diocese’s four counties. Among those happy couples were Mary and Charles Stockton of Corpus Christi Parish, Willingboro, married 50 years, who attended the Oct. 21 service in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, with nearly 100 other couples. “Through all our marriage, the Sacrament kept us going,” Mary Stockton said. Surrounded by others, she said,

Ellen and Michael Meehan, members of St. James Parish, Red Bank, share a kiss 25 years after they first celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. John Blaine photo gave the Mass a feeling that there was a collective “outpouring of ups and downs and sorrows. We count on grace to get us through.” Jennifer and Nicholas Petrillo, of St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson, who attended the Oct. 7 Mass in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, also spoke on the importance of faith in marriage. “To me, marriage is the profound example of the unconditional love of Christ. I’ve also learned that I’ve got a long way to go on the road to holiness and how much I need God’s love and God’s grace in

my marriage,” Jennifer Petrillo said while beaming at her husband of one year. Added Nicholas Petrillo, “Marriage has given me a deeper understanding of my own capacity to love and forgive. Marriage makes visible the love the God.” Catherine and Jim Campbell, a 25-year couple from St. Thomas More Parish, Manalapan, who attended the Freehold service, said they look to the examples of their own parents’ marriages for inspiration. “Her parents were married 63 years,

and my parents were married 38 years,” Jim Campbell said. “It’s your faith and love that get you through the tough times. Relying on our faith is a no-brainer.”

Answered Prayers Role models of faith were indeed at the forefront of the Freehold Mass. In his homily, Bishop O’Connell reflected on his parents, who were married 59 years before his father passed away. “Most of what I learned about marriage didn’t come from books, didn’t come from the seminary training; it came from them.

I learned from them and from observation and from listening to them,” Bishop O’Connell preached. He recounted how his father suffered during the last year of his life and that his mother prayed for God to allow her “to be the last person my father saw before dying so that she could tell him how much she loved him as went home to God.” His father slipped into a coma toward the end of his life but awoke briefly on his last day, looked right at his mother and smiled before passing away. “Her prayers were answered. Her love for her husband was rewarded,” Bishop O’Connell said.

World of Warmth During both Masses, couples clasped hands, nestled close and draped an arm around each other. After the Bishop’s homily, all were asked to reaffirm their marriage vows as they joined hands, faced each other and looked warmly into each other’s eyes. Asking them to touch the other’s wedding rings, Bishop O’Connell blessed the couples’ bands as a continuing symbol of their “true faith in each other” Continued on page 8

Speaking to couples present to celebrate their devotion to marriage couples, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., in his homily, speaks about the vocation of marriage and the service that husbands and wives pay one another through love. Craig Pittelli photo

“No marriage is perfect. No human being is perfect. Only God is perfect and, he calls us to strive for perfection as best we can, recognizing that true perfection is only possible in heaven. All of us struggle with life and its situations, and all of us seek to do the best we can. Our readings today and the teachings they offer should provide the occasion for us to pray that God will touch our lives and our hearts, heal any wounds where they may exist and inspire our resolve to serve one another, husband and wife – wife and husband.”

“When marriage endures – 50 years, 25 years, 1 year – thank God, may God bless you all the days of your lives. May God be the One you look to see together, husband and wife, as you live your lives and as your lives finally lead you home to God.” “We heard the familiar story in the book of Genesis, in the First Reading which presents the creation of marriage, revealing the intention of God that man not be alone. That man and woman be united as one flesh as husband and wife and that is the basis of our teaching in the Church.”

Marriage celebrated at Masses Continued from page 3 and an ongoing reminder of their love. Boisterous applause from family and friends erupted as the couples shared a kiss. Peg Hensler, associate director of Marriage Ministries and NFP for the diocesan Department of Evangelization and Family Life, which sponsored the Masses aided by the diocesan Office of Worship, said the devoted anniversary couples “are examples of what marriage was meant to be. … The Lord’s presence dwells in real and concrete ways in our families. The [Anniversary Masses] are a small but real gesture of the love in which God dwells in the world.” The Diocesan Festival Choir, under the direction of Shawn Mack, also helped set the tone for both services, especially as Trenton’s Cathedral was filled with the processional hymn, “God Is Love.” That theme echoed throughout Bishop O’Connell’s Oct. 21 homily, which was drawn from the Gospel Reading of the day, Mark 10:35-45.

“If there is any vocation where service is highlighted,” he said, “it is… married life: service to one another, every day, all day; service to your families and communities.” “You may not always think of marriage that way, but it is fundamentally a vocation of service because it is a vocation of love,” Bishop O’Connell said, a bond With hands joined, a couple prays the Our Father among the of love that has grown stronger, many faithful gathered to celebrate marriages. Everlasting Love

Toms River parishioners share love advice after 75 years of marriage By Dubravka Kolumbic-Cortese, Correspondent

A

sk Ben and Frances Paolillo what the secret is to their 75-years-andstill-going-strong marriage, and one word keeps coming up: respect. “The secret is respect,” Ben explained. “Take care of her, and she’ll take care of you.” “And don’t argue,” Frances added. “Arguments don’t help – they only make you feel like a bad person.” Frances, 93, and Ben, 96, have had a lot of time to practice what they preach, and by all accounts, they seem to know what they are talking about. The love they share is evident in the way they effusively complement each other when they talk about what keeps them going strong after all these years. “I love him,” Frances said simply. “She’s a good wife, a good mother, a good mother-in-law and a good grandmother,” Ben said lovingly. “And a sweetheart.” “Thank you, love,” Frances responded affectionately. The Paolillos, parishioners in St. Luke Parish, Toms River, were

among those who attended the Anniversary Blessings Mass with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., Oct. 7 in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold. They said they were delighted to meet the Bishop and receive a special blessing for their 75th anniversary. “We thank God that we reached this point,” Frances said. “So far, God has been very good to us.” Ben, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and Frances, who was a soprano in the parish choir for years before her eyesight deteriorated, both admit their Catholic faith has been paramount to their relationship and family life. “That’s number one,” Frances said.

Meant to Be Frances was born in Italy and came to the United States as a toddler. She met Ben, who is also Italian, at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., when she was 15 and he was 18. She recalled how Ben would pick her up every day after school while making deliveries for the grocery store where he worked. Ben still fondly remembers the first time he met his bride. “I was watching her, and I thought she was young and beautiful,” he said. “I started going out with her, and that’s how we fell in love.” The couple became engaged just two years later, and they were married Sept. 26, 1943, in Our Lady of Grace Church in Brooklyn. They settled into married life in their hometown, raising four children, three girls and a boy. Ben worked in the New York City Transit maintenance department for 32 years, and Frances worked as a clerk for Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., personally congratulates the Paolillos, who marked 75 years of marriage at the Freehold Mass. Courtesy photo

Chase Manhattan Bank. Today, their brood has grown to include six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, ranging in age from 20 down to four-year-old twins. They said they are fortunate to spend a lot of time with their extended family, most of which live within driving distance.

Nothing for Granted After their time in Brooklyn, the couple lived in Tampa, Fla., for 32 years, managing to pack a lot of traveling into their time in the Sunshine State. Two years ago, the Paolillos’ daughter convinced them to move to New Jersey, and they have happily settled into a retirement community in Lakewood. They count their blessings for their sound minds and overall good health. They take care of themselves by watching what they eat and drink, walking, keeping busy and living a mostly independent life. “My mind is still good,” Frances said, acknowledging she has macular degeneration. “My husband does mostly everything, God bless him.” Their advice to young couples contemplating marriage is the same advice they’ve followed for 75 years. “Give them a lot of love,” Ben said. “Stay with them as much as possible. With care, you get to love them, and they get to love you.” “You have to be a good person, that’s all,” Frances said, adding that a person needs to “respect yourself first, and then everybody else.”

Anniversary couples reflect on married love By Rose O’Connor and Lois Rogers

A

fter receiving blessings from Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., and being enveloped in the warmth of the greater Church community and supported by families and friends, couples mingled with one another at receptions after both Anniversary Blessings Masses, recalling stories of love and faith. The sentiments that follow are among those shared by those celebrating their first, silver, golden and more anniversaries as they discussed their stories, the Sacrament of Marriage and how their Catholic faith plays a significant role in their lives as a couple. • Brenda and Nicholas Ponzio from St. Veronica Parish, Howell, celebrated their first anniversary in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral. Both were widowed, with Brenda previously married 50 years and Nicholas for 35. “There’s always going to be highs and lows,” Brenda said. “Always remember your vows and keep your faith.” • Josie and Don Castaldo of St. Greg-

ory the Great Parish, Hamilton Square, basked in the joy of celebrating their 62nd anniversary on the actual date of their wedding, Oct. 21, in the Trenton Cathedral. “This was a surprise for me,” Josie said. “He told me he would like to sign up for the Mass on our anniversary.” Don broke into a wide grin. “I’m the romantic. I remember all the dates,” he said, vividly recalling the couple’s first date, including what Josie wore: a peach-colored dress with a beaded bodice. • Sonya and Martin LiPera from St. Clement Parish, Matawan, spoke of the need for prayer in marriage during the Oct. 7 Mass in the Freehold Co-Cathedral. “You need lots of prayer. When you’re married for 25 years, you pray a lot,” Sonya said. • Mary and Michael Galley were happy to share what celebrating their firstyear milestone meant to them. The couple, who traveled from their residence in Pennsylvania for Mass in Trenton, were married in St. Paul Church, Burlington, a worship site of St. Katharine Drexel Parish. “It was very important for us to be

married in the Catholic Church. We both grew up Catholic and we want to keep the Church a part of our life,” Michael said. They said a marriage grounded in faith during the “critical moments and at all times” is “very important,” especially as they look forward to starting a family. • Christina and Karl Schuetz of Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune, celebrated 50 years of married life in the Co-Cathedral. “It wasn’t until recently [that] I realized I could ask our Lord for the blessings of the Sacrament of Marriage,” Christina said. “You preserve because God is with you and part of the marriage.” • After 50 years of marriage, Jack and Jane Rodeschin of St. Mary of the Lakes Parish, Medford, still see the hand of God at work in their marriage. “We met at the World’s Fair in 1964 on a blind date,” Jack said during the reception in the Cathedral. Jane recalled that 15 years ago, their world turned upside down when Jack suffered a ruptured aorta and nearly died. “The way I look at it, [his recovery] was a true miracle,” she said. Coming to the Cathedral to receive a blessing and reaffirm their vows was absolutely the best way to celebrate it, they said.
