Holy Week & Easter

Hosannas in the Highest 1.

I

t was a prayerful week around the four counties of the Trenton Diocese April 10-17, as the faithful from the Diocese’s 97 parishes and other institutions commemorated the events of Jesus’ last week on earth by participating in liturgies and events on Palm Sunday and the Sacred Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. From service projects and Sacraments to solemn and joyful worship, participants were witness to the source and summit of what makes this the holiest time of the Church year.

1. 1. Taper candles are lit by those attending the Easter Vigil in the Princeton University Chapel. Father Zachary Swantek, chaplain and director of the university’s Aquinas Institute, was principal celebrant of the Vigil Mass, which saw 15 Confirmations and three Baptisms. “God is definitely at work on the Princeton campus,” he said. “It was extremely moving to celebrate the Vigil in such a beautiful chapel” – the first time since the pandemic began. 2. Our Lady of the Angels Parish held Stations of the Cross on the grounds of Immaculate Conception Church, Trenton, on Good Friday. The stations were led by Father Carlos Aguirre, pastor, and Father George Medina. Each stop included a depiction of the station made from colored sawdust, a Guatemalan tradition, created at the parish during the week. 3. Father Patrick McPartland, pastor of St. Catharine Parish, Holmdel, lights the Paschal Candle during the Easter Vigil, assisted by Deacon Mike Lonie and altar server Ryan Hammer. “We had beautiful liturgies this year,” Father McPartland reflected. “It was good to see so many young families at Church!” 22   THE MONITOR MAGAZINE

5. Students in the Catholic campus ministry in The College of New Jersey, Ewing, participate in a service project following Palm Sunday Mass during which they assemble Easter baskets for the young patrons of Mount Carmel Guild. In all 15 baskets were assembled, each containing “a large Easter bunny, a variety of candies, and religious items such as prayer cards and booklets,” said Father Christopher Colavito, TCNJ’s Catholic chaplain. “We hope to make it a Palm Sunday tradition.”

4. The Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion was thoughtfully portrayed on Good Friday in St. Justin the Martyr Church, Toms River, through Living Stations of the Cross – a tradition 13 years running. Vin Ebenau, who narrated and helped craft the Living Stations script with his father, Deacon Fred Ebenau, said, “Putting together church events [that] tell stories and having youth involved is critical ... Faith in action is so important.”

6. Father Michael Manning, pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Rumson, leads a Palm Sunday procession across the Sea Bright-Rumson Bridge prior to celebrating Palm Sunday Mass in Holy Cross Church. The 12-year tradition draws supportive community attention as passing motorists honk their horns. “It has been a blessing to see families continue the tradition as their children grow,” Father Manning said.
