ishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., conferred the Sacrament of Holy Orders upon six new deacons during a Mass of Ordination May 21 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. Five of the men will serve their parish communities as permanent deacons and one man will serve as a transitional deacon until his expected ordination to the priesthood next year. The permanent deacons are: Deacon George Chemaly, St. Mary Parish, Middletown; Deacon Robert Golden, St. Martha Parish, Point Pleasant; Deacon Eugene Kotowski, St. Joan of Arc Parish, Marlton; Deacon Joseph Montone, St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, and Deacon Paul LaPlante, St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton Square. Rev. Mr. Kevin Hrycenko, the transitional deacon, will spend his diaconate year serving in St. Dominic Parish, Brick.

‘We come for a holy purpose: to ordain these six men from each of the four counties of the Diocese … your sons, your husbands, your fathers, your relatives and friends … to the order of deacon. They have prayed and listened and learned what that order means and what it requires of them.’ 1. As the Litany of Saints is sung, the six deacon candidates lie prostrate which is symbolic of their complete submission to the will of God. 2. Bishop O’Connell imposes hands on the head of Kevin Hrycenko, ordaining him a deacon. 3. Incense burns in the thurible that is carried by a seminarian at the start of the entrance procession. 4.
