One doesn’t have to travel far to experience the grace of pilgrimage

or many Catholics, the word pilgrimage calls to mind the extraordinary spiritual experience of walking in the footsteps of Christ in the Holy Land or traveling to Rome to visit St. Peter’s Basilica. Such pilgrimages of great distances, however, many not be possible for everyone due to the conStory by straints of time, financial resources, and family or work obligations. Preparing for Pilgrimage Msgr. Sam Sirianni, rector of St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, offers these tips:  Plan well, beginning with prayer, to understand why you are taking the journey. “Is it for the intentions of our family, for those who are ill or in need, for repentance or for our own spiritual benefit?”  Research the places that might serve your

pilgrimage intention and that fit into your available time and resources, especially if a destination requires an overnight stay.  In addition to prayer and reflection, necessary elements of a pilgrimage are Mass and Confession. These are regularly offered at shrine sites and should be included in a personal or family pilgrimage schedule.

Learning to Trust Vastness of Serengeti a lesson in simplicity, humbleness

t had been a long, wonderful but exhausting day, and another one lay ahead with an early wake-up call. Yet at 11:30 p.m., I was wide awake – too frightened to sleep. Story and photos by Dorothy K. LaMantia, Correspondent

Witnessing creatures in their native habitat inspired LaMantia to appreciate the connectedness of God’s family.

My husband and I were fulfilling a dream to visit the Serengeti, to see the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra as they crossed the Mara River in Tanzania, and to see Africa’s Big Five – lions, leopards, hippopotamus, rhinoceros and giraffe – on their own turf. Earlier that evening, we arrived at the second of three campsites we would visit on our nine-day safari – and were unnerved to see we would be staying in a tent. At our first stop near the Ngorongoro Crater, our tent was cabin-like – crafted out of wood, steel and glass with doors and windows that locked. Known in the travel industry as glamour-camping, these state-of- the-art structures are called tents – which a hardy, old-fashioned camper would find laughable. This camp could have passed for the studio lot of the TV comedy “M*A*S*H*” with its canvas tents, fabric screens and zippers to separate inside from out. We did not expect this. Our hosts, members of the Maasai tribe who have made the Serengeti their home for centuries, explained the cardinal rules of camp – no leaving the tent without an escort after dark, call for an escort with the walkie-talkie, and for help in an emergency, use the foghorn. Our enthusiasm dampened as we scurried to cover all openings – we didn’t want our four-legged hosts to see us as they ambled about their nightly routine. We turned out the lights, but I could not turn off my imagination and its litany of “what- if ’s.” Needing sleep badly and anticipating the day ahead without it, I reckoned that all I could do was

trust God to keep me calm and get me to sleep – a challenge for a worry-wart like me. I prayed for safety and for trust. Imagining Mary holding my hand, I breathed slowly and kept my focus on her hand in my own. Sleep came, then was interrupted by an argument among the baboons in a nearby tree. A return to my prayerful state of mind calmed me again to sleep. By morning, I was refreshed. I felt like I passed a test and met the day with relief and gladness. The unzipping of the tent’s door revealed an unforgettably glorious sunrise. But the lessons had only begun. On our morning drive, we became acquainted with the miles of grasses stippled in muted tones of yellow, brown and green against calm blue skies. The Massai gave the land the name “Serengeti,” meaning, “endless plains.” Photography from NASA help estimate the plains measure 12,000 square miles. Seated in the back of a Jeep, I felt small. When the Jeep stopped, the ears enjoyed a holiday from extraneous sound, broken only by the calls of birds. But the silence teemed with vibration of all that is hidden in those grasses. Suddenly, birds of the most vibrant colors or tiny mammals showed up, evoking excitement that comes from experiencing something truly new. I imagined it was much like the newness of Creation. Not far from the plains is the Olduvai Gorge, where the oldest human remains were found in 1986. “We’re near Eden,” I thought. I found the place holy in its simplicity, and I was moved to pray. I opened my breviary to the morning

Psalm: “How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.” I smiled. Even the Universal Church was celebrating Creation with us that day. Our guides – all indigenous people – shared the secrets of this Eden, the interplay of species, like the mutuality of the African buffalo and the oxpecker, a bird that stands on the buffalo’s back and eats insects crawling there, keeping it safe from infections. When the bird flies off its back, the buffalo learns that a predator is near. The nastysounding dung beetle eats the dung of other species – and keeps the environment clean and livable. When a lion attacks a gazelle, a number of different species can eat and survive. I reflected on this lesson God provided all Creation: All living things are to live in community and have a role in its existence and a stake in others’ survival. I thought about the Maasai and the protection they showed us – escorting us to our tents after dark, appearing when something was amiss. Around the evening campfires they shared their stories, teaching us about their way of life and making us feel at home. Around their dinner tables we sat with other guests from around the world, and for that time, we enjoyed being part of God’s family. On our last drive through the park, I prayed the Psalm from my breviary, “You have gladdened me, O Lord, by your deeds; for the work of your hands I shout with joy. Diocesan Oberammergau pilgrimage a unique spiritual opportunity By Lois Rogers Correspondent

But it does happen every 10 years in the tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau when the entire population of 2,000 faithfully recreates the Savior’s Passion, Death and Resurrection and invites the world to join them in witness. That will happen in the spring and early summer of 2020 and faithful from around the Trenton Diocese and greater New Jersey will be able to share in it, said Msgr. Sam A. Sirianni, rector of St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold. “Excitement is building about the chance to attend,” said Msgr. Sirianni, who will be among the diocesan priests leading a two-day pilgrimage to the town during a 10-day European trip made available through the Graycar Travel Agency, Hamilton, June 7–16. “It’s a very unique event with a very unique history,” said Msgr. Sirianni, who said he is looking forward to sharing the Oberammergau experience with faithful for the first time. “The town has been doing this play

Bruno, a freelance photographer for The Monitor and former art director of global imaging for Aleteia, a daily online Catholic news and information website, spent nine days in Amman, Jordan, to photograph the country’s religious sites. The trip was co-sponsored by Aleteia and the Jordanian Tourism Bureau, which anticipated a boost to tourism after Bruno suggested to Aleteia that it should develop a resource column to encourage and provide necessary information for those interested in traveling to holy sites. Bruno said he chose Jordan because, “You can go unsupervised. It’s unregulated, less restricted. It

gives you freedom to wander, explore and be. It’s an undiscovered Holy Land … like it was 1,000 years ago. You get a real sense of history.”

[Visiting] is essential for people of faith.” Bruno’s appetite for adventure was sated camping in the Jordanian desert, which was reached using three modes of transportation: ATV, camel and Jeep over rugged terrain. “As the sun set, it got cold,” he said. “The desert is so dark and silent, and seeing every star … made me feel so small, but so much part of the universe. It enhanced my awe of God.” The adventure became challenging at the cliffs near the Dead Sea, where Bruno joined a See Travel • S7

Since returning home, Bruno discussed how the Aleteia adventure guide – consisting of 10 articles and seven videos – will entice readers with the beauty, adventure, and spiritual richness of the trip and become the go-to for how-to information. “Unrestricted travel comes with dangers. No waivers were signed in Jordan,” he said. “Aleteia’s site will be where people will learn what to bring and how to do this safely.” Anticipating a market for the faith adventure, Bruno said, “We are targeting youth who want a rewarding experience of life and faith. It has an evangelical outreach.” From his early teens, Bruno, too, developed a passion for adventure and pushing

boundaries. “I grew up on, and always was in, the Hudson River, swimming, boating, exploring, digging around. I lived on a tugboat for four years. My daughter learned to walk while we lived there,” said Bruno, who has been married to his wife, Alicia, for 27 years. They are the parents of two children. For Bruno, his work is more than a job. “My work is evangelization. I pray daily that whatever we produce will touch and inspire someone.”

On the Heels of Heroes El Salvador, Guatemala pilgrimage sheds light on lives of missionaries Story by David Karas, Correspondent

hen you ask Father Peter James Alindogan about his recent pilgrimage in El Salvador and Guatemala, he is quick to share about the experience being transformative.

“There is a lot of risk in spreading the Good News.”

“It is very overwhelming, considering we are talking about lives being lost for the sake of our faith,” he said. “It is a real story, the story of our heroes.” Father Alindogan, pastor in Our Lady of Hope Parish, West Long Branch, spent 12 days participating in a pilgrimage organized by the Maryknoll fathers and brothers. In all, there were 27 in the group, including parish Deacon Lou Jakub, 24 priests, one brother and one history professor. The pilgrimage included several stops, including the sites where St. Oscar Romero and Blessed Father Stanley Rother were killed for their beliefs and outreach. The time the pilgrims spent in both countries underlined the dangers facing missionaries and the turmoil in the region – which, historically, has ranged from civil unrest, socioeconomic inequality and religious violence. “The fact that most houses have barbed wires and tall fences, that is already one part of the story,” said Father Alindogan, who noted that the journey from Guatemala to El Salvador also illustrated the risk. “We had armed guards with us with longbarrel guns, before and after our bus.” He added, “That is what awakened me from the comforts that I have here, especially safety and security. I was also able to experience the fear that

Photos courtesy of Father Alindogan was present.” In spending time with the missionaries and experiencing their daily lives in sharing the faith, Father Alindogan said that he was moved by their devotion. “The reflections I had are more than enough to appreciate the value of my priesthood, and also what these missionaries are doing, the risks they take every day … all the adverse situations they encounter in terms of language, culture, food [and] interference by the government,” he said. He said missionaries in the region, and elsewhere, can sometimes be seen as taking the side of the poor and supporting the cause of the poor, which in some cultures could lead to danger. “When you side with the poor like what happened to [St.] Romero and Father Rother, the two notable saints or martyrs we encountered there, you could be branded a communist, and that could really

get you in trouble,” he said. When the pilgrimage began, the group was encouraged to “come and see,” Father Alindogan said. At the close of the experience, they were asked to “go and tell” about their experiences. “Hearing the Good News is not just talking about it at the pulpit; sometimes you have to risk your life, your vocation, and your mission,” Father Alindogan said about the missionaries they encountered. “There is a lot of risk in spreading the Good News.” He added that he would encourage his parishioners to consider a pilgrimage experience in the future, so that they might also have such a transformative faith experience. “I would love for my parishioners to feel that one day,” he said.

Deacon reflects on evangelization of history By Deacon Lou Jakub, Special Contributor

were not simply tour guides. Five of the six had made a gift of their lives, each spending about four decades in missionary work in Central America. The fifth had a missionary history in Africa. Their lives are currently gifts to others. Their witness to us was their personal knowledge of those they personally knew, worked with, prayed with, broke bread with and shared in the struggles of these martyrs of Central America. While we certainly revere the history of our Church and of the saints and martyrs of prior centuries, this journey grounded me in the activities of today’s missionary Church in our current history through the presence of these men. We know the quote “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” In Guatemala City at the rectory garage, site of the martyrdom of Bishop Gerardi, there is a beautiful multi-wall mural graphically displaying the history of St. Oscar Romero, Father Rother, the four religious women, Bishop Gerardi and others in a difficult period in this country’s history. After studying this mural, I noticed the following wall depicts something different, almost inconspicuous – seeds. The Maryknollers on this pilgrimage challenged us not only to “come and see” but also to “go and tell.” I guess they challenged us to help spread the seeds. his past January, I was fortunate to participate in a 12-day pilgrimage sponsored and led by Maryknoll missionaries to Guatemala and El Salvador. While there, we visited the sites and shrines of many modern-day Central American martyrs. These included St. Oscar Romero, fourth archbishop of San Salvador who was canonized in Rome in October 2018; Blessed Father Stanley Rother, the first declared American martyr who was beatified in Oklahoma City in 2017; the site of the martyrdom of four religious women, including two Maryknoll sisters in 1980; the site at the University of Central America where six Jesuits and their companions were killed, and the site of the martyrdom of Bishop Juan José Gerardi Conedera, who was killed in 1998. At these sites where these men and women lived and died, we prayed, celebrated Mass, sang verses from the song “Holy Ground” and shared our own experiences. We heard the stories of their individual histories, not only of their activities in service to the poor but also of the struggles they had in their own lives. In a sense, these men and women were everyday people – but people responding to their own unique call to holiness. The backdrop for all these sites and shrines was the awareness of the thousands of unrecognized or little-known catechists, and religious and laymen and laywomen from these places who also gave their lives in seeking, through hardships, to follow the truths of their faith and love for the other. What really brought this pilgrimage alive and will continue to do so, I pray, was the presence of the five Maryknoll priests and one brother who journeyed with us. These men

Worn marble steps of Holy Stairs to be uncovered for public to climb By Carol Glatz Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY • For the first time in 300 years, the marble steps of the Holy Stairs will be free from the thick wooden panels installed in 1723 to protect the stairs and left uncovered for the public. For at least 40 days, people will be able to touch and climb the bare stones that, according to tradition, are the ones Jesus climbed when Pontius Pilate brought him before the crowd and handed him over to be crucified.

“It’s an extraordinary occasion to touch the same steps as Jesus.” The soon-to-be cleaned steps and newly restored frescoed stairway will be unveiled April 11, the week before Holy Week, during a special blessing ceremony at the Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs. The marble steps were going to be left open to the public temporarily before the original

The decision was made during one of the final phases of the sanctuary’s restoration – a 20-year-long project overseen by the Vatican Museums and funded with the help of private donors, foundations and the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. Paolo Violini, the Vatican Museums’ head fresco restorer, and his team were so astonished and moved when they saw the degree to which the stone steps had been worn away, he felt this hidden testimony of faith had to be seen and experienced – even just temporarily – by today’s faithful. “It’s an extraordinary occasion to touch the same steps as Jesus and witness the faith of all the other people who came before us,” said the sanctuary’s rector, Passionist Father Francesco Guerra. “And it is a concrete way to become linked with those who came before us in history and the faith, who passed on the faith to us,” he said.

nyone who’s ever thought of changing lanes smack-dab in the middle of the busyness of life, take heart: You can veer off the road quite successfully.

Eating in Naples, for example, becomes especially moving as Zurlo and her parents, who are visiting, share a meal with relatives, descendants of her great-grandfather. “It became obvious seeing the Neapolitan Zurlos that we are blessed with a nogray-hair gene,” she writes with tenderness. The book concludes on an introspective note and Zurlo discerning choices for her life going forward, both personal and educational, as Zurlo taught at The Catholic University of America, Washington, before joining Seton Education Partners, where she currently works. “Rome impacted me on a more personal level by providing quiet time,” she writes. So for those still in the fast lane who can’t get to Rome just yet, calm the noise with “Piazzas, Popes & Pasta.”
