POST-INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPES Seixal, Portugal National Steelworks: ‘From Industry to Multifuncionality’ Landscape Regeneration, Urban Planning, Public Space Design FAUL 2012
Position: Personal Project Project Area: 520.000 m2 Tasks: Urban Analysis | Concept Development | Production of all graphic elements. This work follows a scientific dissertation, then becoming my Master’s Degree final project. The research theme focuses on the regeneration of post-industrial territories, based on the consolidation of urban fabrics and connections with the nearest urban settlements, in order to create a new urban centre with new functions and conditions to attract new investments. The intervention site is a vast industrial territory located in the city of Seixal, on the south bank of the Tagus river. The concept for the new urban plan starts from the creation of a new connection bridge between Seixal and Barreiro, and the desmaterialization of the existing industrial urban grid once it crosses this new mobility axis, inducing organicity. The historical and landscape heritage of the study area is valued and preserved through a structure of spaces with different characteristics, that accentuates the intrinsic
relation between this territory and the great estuary of the Tagus. The strategy of territorial occupation is divided in four phases to provide flexibility and adaptability regarding future needs. The new urban center gathers new activities and functions such as, business centre, housing, shopping areas, professional school, hotel, and other services. On the riverside, an urban park is designed to preserve the natural and unique characteristics of this location, where everyone can appreciate and interact with the beautiful landscape, thanks to the path structure that links the different public spaces.

CULTURAL STATION Alcântara, Portugal Urban Requalification, Building and Public Space Design FAUL 2010
Position: Personal Project Project Area: 86,870 m2 Tasks: Urban Analysis | Concept Development | Production of all graphic elements. This project encompassed the requalification of the Alcântara-Terra railway station in the city of Lisbon, creating a direct interaction between urban intervention and building design. The urban proposal is developed by a line that “draws” the entire project, assuming a variety of shapes and figures (pavement, building, sidewalks). Taking advantage of the existing landscape, two volumes grow along the street on the eastside of the intervention area, while on the westside a building extends paralel to the Ceuta Avenue, creating a boundary between a crowded and busy road, and a new type of cultural and leisure public space. In order to solve the problems of soil permeability which lead to floods during the rainy season, green areas where created to enhance water drainage, providing a mutable environment. The building marking the south entrance of the new “Cultural Station” houses a library, an art gallery, an auditorium and study rooms. The interior organization follows the urban proposal logic, where all functions stand along a main circulation axis, creating a variety of spaces with different characteristics inside this shell that twists over itself.

TRANSVERSAL (RE)CONNECTIONS Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal Urban Planning, Public Space Design FAUL 2009
Position: Personal Project Project Area: 95,250 m2 Tasks: Urban Analysis | Concept Development | Production of all graphic elements.
Vila Franca de Xira
Mafra
Alhandra
This project aims at the rehabilitation of the riverfront of Vila Franca de Xira, a city located at approximately 30km of Lisbon. Its main objective is to create a structure of public spaces associated with new reference buildings, intersecting the existing urban fabric on critical key points in order to solve some issues observed during the site analisys. The presence of the railway alongside the river Tagus associated with the lack of crossing points has led to a divorce between the urban center and the river. In order to surpass this fact, the concept for the intervention involves the implementation of new connection axes between the urban core and the riverside, creating breaking points transversal to the river Tagus, overcoming the barrier formed by the railway with overcrossings, as well as under. The main crossing axis transposes the urban garden pier to the inner side of the railway, forming a green connection platform. The separation between walkways and permanence spaces is performed through a set of platforms and ramps, that interact with the river Tagus and its unique landscape - LezĂrias -, culminating in a public space at the north the site. This space acts like a transition agent between the urban area and the rural crop fields.

STRUCTURE EXISTING
Position: Project Manager Construction Area: 2470 m2 Tasks: Concept and program development | Production of drawings and graphic presentation | 3D modelling and Rendering The goal of this intervention was to create a versatile space to host events, based on an existing warehouse steel structure. The concept of the design was based on rhythm, that began with the exterior facade’s irregularity and continued to the inside and outside spaces.
EQUALIZER RHYTHM
MUSIC
The new building presents itself with a exterior irregular shell that is prolonged to its interior, giving a different rhythm to the warehouse shaped structure. The program gathers a Disco, two Cocktail Areas and two Event Halls that can work independently or as one big open area, making it capable of hosting several events simultaneously. On the exterior a Lounge Area with a swimming pool faced towards the beach and the ocean, making the most of the priviledged location.

HOUSE COBRE Cascais, Portugal Concept | Development Design MRS INTERIOR DESIGN 2016 Position: Architect Collaborator Construction Area: 314,38 m2 Tasks: Concept co-developer | Development of all the material for submission | 3D Modelling and Images The project consisted on an extension and renovation of a Single House located in Cascais, with a new garage, attic opening and lower floor. In order to create a different entrance for the upper and lower floors, a new element was added to the main facade, introducing a new material - wood - that would also be used on for the conception of the new garage. This element shelters the vertical access of the two main floors. The functional organisation was rearranged, locating the social areas on the south side towards the generous garden with a connection to a new terrace located on the roof of the attachment. The exterior areas were also renewed, creating a new path to the new entrance and a pool on the southside of the lot.

Letter of recommendation Diogo Correia
I have been acquainted with Diogo Correia since his enrolment as a Master student of Architecture, with specialization in Urbanism, at the Faculty of Architecture, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. nd th th I accompanied his work as lecturer of Design Studios in his 2 , 4 and 5 years, and also as his Final Master Project co-adviser. Diogo has always been a creative student, with skilled resources in drawing and CAD design, and good spatial reasoning capacities. During his training he faced increasingly complex design challenges, ranging from architectural to urban and landscape scales. His Final Master Project has also been an opportunity to further engage with a deeper and intertwined design/theoretical framework, with a proposal to tackle one of Lisbon’s most challenging urban sites – a former industrial site by the Tagus River, with outstanding landscape and environmental value. Diogo has also been in contact with the international scene, namely through his Erasmus mobility scholarship in Milan, Italy and participation in international workshops held in Lisbon (Faculty of Architecture, TU Lisbon + Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam) and London (Faculty of Architecture, TU Lisbon + London Development Agency, Design For London + London Metropolitan University), allowing him to have a broad perspective on contemporary architecture and urbanism. Being an easily adaptable person and good in team work, he will no doubt be able to contribute with his skills to a demanding and creative design environment. For these reasons I highly recommend Diogo Correia in his application.

REFERENCE LETTER DIOGO CORREIA
To Whom It May Concern: It has been my pleasure to have worked with Diogo Correia as a Junior Architect under my supervision, from October 2010 to July 2011, and I feel that he is a deserving candidate for the job he is applying to. During the period we worked together, although his background at the time was mainly in the realm of Urban Design and Planning, we developed a few projects for single family housing, from initial concept design to producing the final tender drawings and details. Throughout the various project stages, Diogo proved to be a valuable asset, very imaginative, quick to learn, fun to work with and a humble worker. He showed proficiency in using the various software tools required, from Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop, and I had the privilege of seeing him demonstrate an incredible initiative and a strong dedication in all aspects of the work, which much facilitated the whole process and led to greater quality outcomes for the projects in general. His responsibilities included proposing and designing solutions for particular aspects of each project, producing working drawings, researching materials and specifications and implementing those solutions, creating engaging 3D visuals for clients presentations. He responds well to intellectually demanding situations and applies himself with enthusiasm to new learning situations. He is curious and not afraid to ask questions if he does not understand something. Diogo is an intelligent and industrious individual. I know that if given the chance, he will prepare to become a great architect, and has the right profile to tackle even greater responsibilities such as team leading. I ask that you look upon his application favourably and grant him a chance to be part of your team. Sincerely, Bruno Freitas, Arq.º
