! ! ! ! After all the children had shared what !was in their eggs, the teacher was ready !to move on to the next part of her lesson ! when she heard Jimmy speak up. ! !“Teacher you haven’t asked me to share ! what I brought.” ! ! The Simplicity of Easter

One of my favorite stories of

Easter involves a Sunday School class and their teacher. Two weeks before Easter the teacher sent home a empty plastic egg with the instructions to put something in the egg that would remind them about Easter and be prepared to tell why it was a reminder. The kids left class with enthusiasm for the assignment, except for Jimmy. Jimmy had been born with the umbilical chord wrapped around his neck. This had caused some permanent damage and Jimmy was always a little slow to mentally grasp things. The other kids where usually very good with him, but every now and then couldn’t resist poking fun at him when he was slow to catch on or made silly comments. The teacher

April 2014

knowing this had meant to be sure and share the assignment with Jimmy’s parents, but forgot in the hustle of signing the children out.

believe in Him!!” Wiping a tear from her eyes the teacher reached out and hugged Jimmy for his simple reminder of the meaning of Easter.

As the teacher gathered her class together on Easter morning the kids came in excited and ready to share what was inside their eggs. Then the teacher saw Jimmy and she remembered not telling his parents of the assignment. With some unease she began to have the kids share their insights. Susan had brought in a paper butterfly symbolizing the new life of the resurrection. Rick brought in a rock symbolizing the stone rolled over the tomb. Ricardo had put a small nail in the egg to symbolize the nails that had kept Jesus on the cross. Rachel a small white cloth representing the linens Jesus had been wrapped in.

My friends, Easter is an amazing and busy time in the church. Special events and services are all there to remind us of the story and provide extra opportunity for us grow spiritually. But in the midst of all the special activities, at its core is the very simple message that the tomb was empty because Jesus rose from the grave.

After all the children had shared what was in their eggs, the teacher was ready to move on to the next part of her lesson when she heard Jimmy speak up. “Teacher you haven’t asked me to share what I brought.” Swallowing a lump she asked Jimmy to share, but when he opened up his egg their was nothing in it as the teacher had feared. As the children began to titter and whisper, Jimmy spoke up. “My egg is empty just like the tomb was on Easter morning. And because Jesus didn’t stay dead neither will I and because he had a new life so can I when I

Because of His new life we to are filled with new life by our faith in Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. I hope your Easter season is filled with fun activities and joy. But I also pray you will take some quiet time either during worship or on your own to ponder the wonderful simplicity of the good news of Easter. Your Fellow Servant in Christ, Pastor Don Lorfing!

3 Square Food Bank

Over 400 boxes were packed full of much needed food items for those in need. Hungry does not mean homeless. It may surprise you to learn that, every day, working parents in Southern Nevada face an unthinkable choice between feeding their families and paying the bills. Three Square was founded to help people like this get the food their families need to survive so that they can focus on other things - like getting back on their feet. Stewardship Moment LIFE IS FOR GIVING

Many Americans live with two opposite feelings. On one hand, they want to experience meaning and purpose in their lives. On the other hand, they often feel that they are running on empty. In his classic novel, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo tells us how to eliminate that second feeling. The bishop befriends Jean Valjean and gives him lodging. Valjean repays that kindness by stealing the bishop’s valuable candlesticks. After the bishop reports the theft, the police magistrate questions Valjean in the bishop’s presence. As the interrogation progresses, Valjean seems headed for jail. At that point, the bishop unexpectedly retracts his charges and offers a plausible reason for why the candlesticks are missing. Jean Valjean is amazed. When he and

the bishop are alone, he says, “Why did you do that? You know I am guilty.” The bishop replies, “Life is for giving.” Why do churches receive an offering in their worship services? Some people say, “Because the church needs the money.” That is only part of the answer. Even if a wealthy benefactor fully underwrote our congregation’s expenses, we would still need to provide people with the opportunity to give an offering in our worship services. Weekly giving teaches us—and reminds us because we keep forgetting—that life without unselfish giving is life without meaning and purpose. Victor Hugo is right. Life is for giving.

Easter Offerings During the Easter season, it is encouraging to see both new and familiar faces at our worship services. Throughout the year, many of you already support the congregation with your time, talent and finical contributions but greater participation is always welcome. We encourage you to look into our electronic giving program. It takes just a few minutes to setup a recurring giving plan.

Visit the church website: www.goodsamlv.com and click “give”.

God is truly good as we quickly approach the finish line on our school expansion. The building exterior is mostly complete with the painting starting any day. The interior is rapidly moving into the finishing work stage and projected completion is on schedule for early May. That will give us plenty of time to secure our certificate of occupancy, and get all classrooms furnished and ready to go for the start of our school year the end of August.!
