From the
Pastor by Rev. Scott K. Hove
“He who was seated on the throne said,
“I am making everything new!” (Revelation 12:5a)
Resolutions. They are our decisions or determinations to do something. They usually are made at the end of one year to be acted upon in the new year. Often, they go something like this:
! I am going to lose weight.
✦
! I am going to manage my money better.
But, if I am not resolved to change what needs changing in my life, how can anything be made new? Jonathan Edwards was one of this country’s greatest preachers, theologians and intellectuals. He lived before we became a nation and died while he was in his mid-50’s. Edwards provides insight as to how to actually keep a resolution when he says: “Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God's help, I do humbly entreat Him, by His grace, to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to His will, for Christ's sake. I will remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.” (Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), from the Works of Jonathan Edwards, Vol. 1)
✦
! I am going to be a better spouse, partner or friend.
✦
! I am going to control my temper better.
✦
Most people I know, including myself, rarely make New Year’s resolutions anymore because they are usually broken just days into January. Having learned over the years that my ability to keep resolutions was limited it just seemed better to not make them at all.
Three things we learn about making New Year’s resolutions, then, from Edwards:
1. God must be at the center of our resolutions because, like Edwards, we are “unable to do anything without God’s help.” But, with God’s help “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13 NRSV)
need should be supported by God’s Word.
3. Resolutions need to be reviewed on a regular basis. Edwards says they should be read weekly. It helps us to be reminded about what we wanted and needed to change at the beginning of the year. We belong to a God who is in the business of making “all things new!” If there are things in your life that need a makeover, this is the year to do it. Team up with God in the new year. Then it is possible to make the coming year a great year because you won’t have to try and do it all on our own! So, go ahead and make some resolutions following some great advice from Jonathan Edwards! That combined with God’s Holy Spirit can enable all of us to make some necessary changes that are possible to attain after all. Happy New Year! Pastor Scott Hove
2. Our resolutions need to be in line with God’s will. They should not bring harm or wrong to anyone else. They

Ministry Spotlight
Thank You to everyone whose generosity, time, and involvement helped 13 families, and over 75 children, including foster children. The response to their need was overwhelming. One family was so impoverished having no phone, and four children all under the age of five. There would have been one more child, but their two-year old died last year. The mother, now pregnant, just sat and cried when the Angel Tree volunteers showed up with gifts. The father works but has been unable to get enough hours, and only at minimum wage. Good Sam member, Kathy Antonino was so struck by this family’s situation, that she went out and bought $100 worth of groceries for them. She said it was a great lesson for her own kids as well. Another recipient family has been struggling to raise and care for 8 children between two sisters. They were
recipients of Angel Tree last year, but they called the church quite late to be included this year. Fortunately, Good Sam’s Angel Tree donations kept coming even after the final deadline of Dec. 22, and the family was able to receive $100 in gift cards. More deliveries went to foster kids, and donations also went to Peggy’s Attic where they give to children in protective services who sometimes are brought in with only the clothes they are wearing. They have seen some very desperate situations. While Good Sam was collecting donations over the past weeks, a stranger showed up at the church with a box of teddy bears. She felt God wanted her to do something with them, but she wasn’t sure what. She had never been to the church before, but as she drove by, she felt moved to bring the teddy bears inside.
The wrapping party on Sunday, Dec. 22 was very successful. Sorting the gifts began the night before, and many of the gifts were being wrapped even before the party officially started. The excitement and willingness of those involved was apparent. Another Good Sam member, Kathy Bronson and her daughter, were ready and helping early that Sunday morning. Thanks to their help, much of the organizing and wrapping was done easily. A very special thank you to Heidi Marley who was the coordinator this year. She put in a lot of her own time and heart to make this happen. Also thank you to PJ Magee who assisted Heidi with this important project giving so much care and attention. You ladies are a blessing! There were many volunteers and donations, and a great eagerness to help with this ministry. It truly blesses families and children in great need, and who are desperate for examples of God’s love at this time of year. Thank you again for reaching out to others by giving, sharing, loving, and caring, and making this ministry a success!

Yes! Good Samaritan now has a brokerage account. This means you can make donations of stock that may give you significant tax advantages over giving monetary donations. For example, in place of giving $1000 in cash to the church you could transfer $1000 worth of stock. If you had purchased the stock at a lower value than it is worth today, you will not have to pay capital gains tax while still obtaining a tax deduction for the present value.

The world has a definition of what makes someone part of the “in crowd”. It is usually based upon your position, possessions, or appearance. However, according to God’s word, there is a different view of what the in crowd is all about. A definition that is more lasting and leads to greater peace and meaning in your life. Join us and bring a friend as we start the new year exploring what it means to be part of the “IN Crowd” that truly matters.
