Ha r ve s ting t he Fr uits o f D is ciple s hip This year’s DAEC theme, “Harvesting the Fruits of Discipleship” brings to mind two important elements of the work of evangelization: First, that as communities of missionary disciples, we are called to grow in our faith in Jesus Christ and conform our lives to his example and teachings. Second, we recognize the call to “make disciples of all nations” and add to the Body of Christ by reaching out to others.

WELCOME
“Promoting Discipleship as a Way of Life” “Put Your Gifts at the Service of One Another.”
Diocese of Springfield in Illinois c/o Catholic Pastoral Center 1615 West Washington Street Springfield, Illinois 62702-4757
November 3, 2016 Dear DAEC Participants, Gathering in the Midwest during the fall season we are surrounded by the harvesting of the crops our farmers planted, which bring great blessing to us all. I hope as you traveled here to Decatur you were blessed by the beauty of this great season and the splendor of the fall array of colors and creative scenes.
Our Chairperson, Christine Malmevik and her core committee have brought together a great team of presenters who no doubt will be led by the Holy Spirit to enlighten us with knowledge, wisdom, and new seeds to strengthen and empower us to go forth and “Harvest the Fruits of Discipleship” in our lives and those we serve. Welcome to our 2016 Conference. May the Lord’s grace and peace fill us all with an eagerness and openness to embrace the rich blessing He has in store for us. May we accept the rich blessings of the Conference that we may go forth and “drop our nets” as we tell the great story of Jesus. We are His hands and His feet. Let us “Go Make a Difference”.
WELCOME
Welcome to the 2016 DAEC with its theme: “Harvesting the Fruits of Discipleship”. Each of us has been called to be a part of the Lord’s harvesting of the seeds we help plant in the lives we are called to minister to and with. These seeds of faith help us to grow in our walk with the Lord who calls us to a personal relationship of love, service, and evangelization. Our daily call is to become “intentional disciples”, as Sherry Weddell reminded us at the 2014 Conference.
“Glory Be To Him, whose power deep within us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or dream.”
Peace in Christ,

Faith is Personal, Not Private: Getting Comfortable as a Witness It’s almost funny to say that Catholics are not comfortable sharing their faith when this is exactly what Jesus tells us to do at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. When we do share, sometimes it comes off as preachy and sometimes we think witnessing is touchy, feely kind of stuff. It’s not.Witnesses not teachers transform lives according to Church teaching. Come see how simple and natural it actually is to be a witness of the faith.

FRIDAY, SESSION 1 - 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM Heal, Proclaim and Teach: The Three Keys to Evangelization in the Catholic Church Today “Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness.” (Mt. 9:35). Inspired by the threefold ministry of Jesus Christ, participants will uncover a practical approach to evangelization: heal the wounded, proclaim the Gospel, and teach the faith. Using highly practical tools with stories of successful saints and ministries today, Jared Dees will help participants uncover ways in which they can live out the New Evangelization through the imitation of Jesus by healing, proclaiming, and teaching the communities in which they serve.

Director of School Climate Archdiocese of St. Louis St. Louis. Missouri Sponsored by Our Sunday Visitor Speaking to Teens about Chastity – What Works & What Doesn’t Cardinal Burke once said, “Every generation has its issue…and chastity is the issue of this generation.” It is no secret that the virtue of chastity is countercultural in a world where cohabitation, promiscuity, pornography (and so many other behaviors contrary to the Gospel) are considered “normal” by so many. The good news is that many teens are embracing the virtue of chastity; our challenge is to proclaim the beauty and relevance of this virtue in a way that inspires the hearts and minds of God’s kids. Based upon years of experiences – both positive and negative - Paul Masek will share some tips as to what works…and what doesn’t. There will be time in this workshop for your input and any questions you might have.

Assistant Principal Magdalen Catholic School PSR Catechist Wichita, Kansas The Six Tasks of Catechesis in Forming Disciples The tasks of catechesis are clearly outlined in the General Directory for Catechesis and reiterated in the National Directory for Catechesis. They are components of the role that every catechist must engage. Sometimes we struggle with balancing these tasks with the material we need to cover and our desire to see children grow spiritually into living disciples. But the tasks of catechesis and the outcomes of discipleship should not be at odds with each other. Cathy will unpack the tasks and give you practical suggestions to incorporate them in your catechetical work. We will also look at how these tasks can be used to gauge the growth of discipleship in children so you know that your job is making a difference.

How can we stay committed to our ministry when people no longer seem enthused or engaged? There simply are going to be days or even seasons when frustration and discouragement are the predominant feelings and leaving the vineyard seems the only option. During this workshop we will consider the cultural climate we exist in and examine some of the factors affecting our ability to bring about a harvest in the vineyard of the Lord. Rather than getting handed another 5 or 10 point “to-do” list of supposed ways to “fix” things, how would you like to spend some time with peers who want to revive their vocational flame, sharpen their tools and regain some hope? Understanding Youth Culture (a little bit better) In his famous prayer, St. Francis asked God to help him to understand – even more than to be understood! And yet, it is easier for those of us in ministry to do the exact opposite – we want to be understood, right? The Teacher/Catechist/Catechetical Leader in the New Evangelization Teachers/Catechists and Catechetical leaders herald “Good News” every day in their ministry. While you might not consider yourself to be an evangelizer — you are! The word “evangelism” comes from the Greek word “euangelizomai,” which literally means “to bring Good News.” The Good News that we bring is not only the message of Jesus Christ but the very person of Jesus Christ who desires a personal relationship with each one of us. It is this personal relationship that is at the heart of evangelization where all are called to an encounter with Christ, to deepen that encounter with Christ over a lifetime and to introduce others to Christ. In this workshop be inspired in your faith and renewed in your understanding of what Christ is asking of you as a minister. Combining humor with practical insight coupled with her experience as a teacher in Ireland and insight from Pope Francis, this workshop will inspire and uplift you as a bringer of the Good News.

Christ the Master-Teacher: 12 Ways to Become a Better Religious Educator “You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master’ and rightly so, for indeed I am” (Jn 13:13). Christ is the model for all religion teachers and catechists. He was called both master (leader) and teacher by his disciples and showed them the way to follow in his footsteps. To become better leaders, we have to become better servants. To become better teachers, we have to become better disciples. With twelve exercises and meditations from the book, 31 Days to Becoming a Better Religious Educator, participants will take steps to becoming better disciples, servants, leaders, and teachers. This workshop is more than a professional development opportunity, it is an invitation to enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, our master-teacher, in order to become better witnesses of his life and teachings.

Redeeming Administration: Harvesting the Fruits of Our Daily Work Administration is often critiqued both by those within the profession and without as work that takes fun-loving people and turns them into anxious curmudgeons, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Speaking out of her own experience as an educational administrator, Ann Garrido will look at practices of administration that can be potentially transformative, making us not only effective administrators but holier, healthier Christians.

Maybe we need a new approach to timeless truths. What could a new method look like? How would we know if it works? How can some parishes seemingly be so successful? Come discover new possibilities for your parish.
