The Project Geo-Environmental was appointed by Marshall Surfacing in order to assess the suitability, and install new bored soakaways for highways in Surrey. The project involved drilling cable percussion boreholes to the required depth and undertaking a falling head soakage test. If the infiltration rate was sufficient, the installation of the necessary pipe-work and siphon head was completed and a post installation soakage test undertaken to confirm the performance of the soakaway.

Aerial of Site Location, Caterham, Surrey

Expertise Geo-Environmental provided the required large diameter drilling equipment required, assess the results of the initial falling head test and install the pipe-work all in one operation.

Benefits It is often the case that a 150mm diameter cable percussion borehole is drilled to assess the potential for a soakaway and the soakaway is then installed as a separate exercise necessitating the drilling of a further large diameter borehole. GeoEnvironmental’s detailed project management allows the careful sequencing of the works so that only one borehole is required. This provides a real benefit to the client in terms of both time saved and reduced costs. 28 Crescent Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 3RP Tel: +44 1273 699399 www.gesl.net

Geo-Environmental undertook an investigation for the proposed development of a site in Totton, from fallow farmland to sports pitches, stands, a clubhouse complex and car parking areas. The site itself was situated on a gentle slope and therefore required re-profiling in order to form the level sports pitches specified in the development. Taking this into account and in consultation with Linden Homes, the investigation therefore included an assessment for earthworks fill suitability and earthworks specification. Following the first phase of the ground investigation, the clubhouse complex was found to overlie soft compressible soils, which could have required a change in Linden Homes development strategy. Geo-Environmental investigated options for the Client and initial consideration was given to changing the development layout. After due consideration this was found not to be a feasible option and thus a supplementary investigation was undertaken to support the design of piled foundations.

Expertise Whilst the form of this development was a departure from that typically undertaken by Linden Homes, GeoEnvironmental was able to provide relevant professional and technical support to understand and overcome the challenges with this site and achieve the required goals to support its development. Geo-Environmental undertook an investigation on behalf of Brighton & Hove City Council for a proposed redevelopment in Brighton. The proposed small scale development comprised the demolition of an existing structure and replacement with a new building on a similar footprint. The project initially comprised a limited ground investigation to assess the geotechnical parameters of the soils for foundation design and soakage potential. Based on the sites historical usage, there was no reason to suspect any significant contamination, and therefore only limited chemical testing was undertaken. The findings of the investigation revealed a localised area of Benzo(a) pyrene contamination and potentially more widespread Lead contamination with respect to the sites proposed end-use. Geo-Environmental recommended field analysis using portable X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) equipment and UV Fluorescence equipment to delineate the Lead and Benzo(a)pyrene in-situ.

Expertise Geo-Environmental’s experienced team with its broad knowledge of investigation techniques was able to advise the client and provide an innovative solution to the problem of delineating contamination.

Benefits With conventional methods a fixed sampling pattern would have been used and unless the client was prepared to pay a premium for a fast turnaround at the laboratory the results would not have been available for two weeks. The main benefit of using field analysis was that the sampling strategy could be altered and amended as works progressed to aid the delineation of “hot-spots”. This was possible as the results were available to the engineer within 60 seconds. Therefore, the client was provided with significantly better delineation than would have been possible with conventional sampling and laboratory analysis. Furthermore, the rapid technique also has cost benefits as it allowed far more samples to be tested compared to the comparable cost of laboratory analysis on a similar number of samples.

Geo-Environmental undertook ground investigations for eight schools in Harrow in July 2009, for additional temporary and permanent classrooms in preparation for September 2009 year 7 intake. Due to time restraints all investigations were required to be undertaken within one week during school time in June 2009. The works were required to assess potential environmental issues and to support the design of foundations for two storey temporary and permanent classrooms, including additions to existing school buildings. Particular emphasis was given to the potential design of “screw piles” as the most environmentally sustainable form of foundation construction.
