CHAIRMANS REPORT I would like to start this report with a tribute to our President Phil Bradshaw, who passed away after a courageous four-year battle with cancer, on the night of the Club Annual Dinner, May 21 2016. As most members will know, Phil was ever present at the Club since he started playing in 1972, and in a world that probably has more takers than givers, he gave himself to the Club for over 40 years, as Treasurer, Sevens Organizer, Field Steward and President. We are very grateful to Phil and send our love and prayers to Tina, John, Jane and the boys; his passing will leave a great void in many lives. With perfect symmetry, Phil’s last game was the tense Play-Off against London Cornish, which secured promotion in some style for the 1st XV, so he certainly left us with a great big smile! I should like to personally thank the Management Team for their dedication to running the Club creatively, innovatively, yet always prudently and with respect to our members and opponents - they are some team. Members who have volunteered to do a job know that you have no idea how much time people give to the Club until you put your hand up and get involved, so please think about what you could do, rather than what ‘they ought to do’. Financially we continue to be in good shape under John Wilkinson’s watchful eye; we have continued to invest in the Club infrastructure, particularly the surrounds to the 1st XV pitch, generously sponsored and executed by The O’Keefe Group, training equipment, new posts (provided by the Council) and the widening of the cabbage patch (!). The Children’s Workshop, a nursery which has been our tenant for many years, is moving into its new purpose-built home in Lady Boswells school this summer, so we are planning to replace this vital income with a new enterprise run by our Clubhouse Manager, Diane Carey, called The Soft Play Café, launching in the Autumn, of which more detail later.

Nick Wilkinson, our Rugby Development Officer, now has a team of coaches helping him preach the gospel in local primary and secondary schools, and is much in demand, as evidenced by the turnout at both SRFC Primary Schools Tag Festival and the Saracens Summer Camp. We see this as both our duty to help under-resourced local schools and as a natural source of new talent for our juniors. I think it is safe to say that the relocation of the 1st XV pitch next to the new BradshawPearl Balcony (and bar!) has been an unqualified success, the drainage has already improved and the playing surface should be considerably better for next season with additional top dressing and channel remediation. Although a year has passed since my last report, I cannot claim much progress on the 3G pitch project which I am still working on with our landlords Sevenoaks Town Council. The idea is still very much alive. Our main sponsor, Savills, has continued to give us the ability to provide first class equipment and facilities to our players of all ages, and we are very grateful that they will continue for a third year. Please remember that Savills will pay the club ÂŁ500 for every house sales instruction from members and their families, and I am delighted to say that last year four such referrals were completed, resulting in an extra ÂŁ2,000 for the club and an estimated ÂŁ50,000 of fee income generated for our sponsor, a genuinely commercial partnership. Thanks to further grant funding from the Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust, we hope to continue investment in 2016/17 to include relocating the club shop and gents toilets to accommodate an injury rehabilitation suite and small gym. The players will need to be fit in division one. However we will need to continue to concentrate on increasing sponsorship and other sources of income to ensure that all of the planned improvements are affordable (where grant is not available) and can therefore be undertaken.

We continue to welcome new members from overseas, all of whom are qualified coaches, and encourage a valuable Southern hemisphere perspective on all matters rugby, including beer-pong and kiwi DJ-ing. This year’s crop, Kelly Anderson (NZ), Tino Vaihu (NZ), Isaac Winter (NZ) and Dan Power (AUS) have not only been good sporting performers, but also great guys, coaching juniors and seniors at the club, and in their spare time turning our for the 1st XV- thanks guys! On the website there is a comprehensive and very personal journal covering last season’s playing achievements and further reflections from Director of Rugby Roger McKerlie, so I won’t presume to cover playing matters in this report. Suffice to say it has been a fantastic year on the field for our club, culminating in promotion of the 1st XV to London Division 1 South, The Acorns and Tonya’s rugby girls are Kent champions and the juniors have once again swept the board of trophies. It will be challenging to stick to our strictly amateur policy when surrounded by financial incentives of other clubs in the higher division, but we are determined to set out our store as a genuine Community Rugby Club with ambitious playing targets, in which everyone is as important as the 1st XV, in the sincere belief that the world has not gone completely mercenary. We are extremely grateful to outgoing Club Captain Ollie Robinson and Coach Danny Vaughan, who have both called time on illustrious Sevenoaks careers. With confident anticipation we welcome Stuart Coleman, who I know has great pride in following his legendary dad Larry into the role of Club Captain, and Adam Bowman as our inspirational new Head Coach. Let’s briefly glance into this brave new world… Coaching at Sevenoaks – My Vision for the future After a successful eight-year period as Academy Head Coach, I am honoured to have the opportunity to take over as the Senior Head Coach of Sevenoaks Rugby and to build on the strong foundations that are already in place. The role of Senior Head Coach will cover a wider remit than previously before, with responsibility for providing coaching leadership across the Seniors (1’s & 2’s), Academy, and juniors. 6

A big part of my role of course is the Senior Squad, but another very important part of my role is to work with the other club coaches across the Juniors & Academy to ensure we are providing our players with the very best learning environment, as well as driving a consistent playing framework across the whole club. I am thoroughly looking forward to working with all the coaches and players across the club. Work has not stopped during the off season as we continue to improve what we do, and how we do it – from creating and driving the right culture in the squad, to creating a new coaching & management structure that caters for the whole Senior Squad (1’s & 2’s) & Academy Squad, player recruitment, developing our S&C offering, new kit, pre season fixtures, training session plans, to the detailed playing framework we will be adopting. The biggest improvement is the “Senior Squad” (1’s & 2’s), creating a competitive and collaborative environment across the seniors where all players are coached, and all players are battling for a 1st XV shirt. One of the other key areas of development has been the assembly of a new and wider Coaching and management team. I am pleased to be supported in the coaching department by three senior coaches – Matt Bates, Ian Collins and Mark Reay, with Mike Walton becoming Squad Manager and Bill Belither, Team Manager. This team, under my stewardship, will support me in the coaching and management of the Senior Squad. In addition to this, I am delighted to welcome Stuart Coleman as 1st XV Captain. Stuart is a Mighty Oaks man through and through, and has risen through the ranks from the minis, academy and has been an outstanding servant and player for the Senior teams for 10 years. As the Senior squad take on the challenge of London 1 South rugby, it is imperative that we have the support team in place to ensure that when Saturday afternoon arrives, they are in the best shape possible to represent the Club. This has meant that we have widened our network in the medical and strength and conditioning area, with Head Physio Jess Rugg being supported by Harry Holder, and Jonny Short returning to the Club to work alongside Connor Browne.

I am delighted that John Rugg will become Academy Head Coach and Jon Muchmore the new Development Manager. Both have worked tirelessly for this Club for a number of years, Ruggy in the Junior and Academy age group section, while Muchy has overseen the 1st Team for the past five seasons, and has played a crucial role in the development of over 30 players from the junior section to Senior level. We are hoping to ensure that the support foundations within the Club are as solid as they can be. The aim is for this to flow through the age groups and create an environment that ensures the transition from youth to senior squad is one that our juniors and minis are keen to make. Bring it on! Adam Bowman, Head Coach, Sevenoaks Rugby Well said Adam! The Club’s sincere thanks go to every single volunteer who makes it all possible, and as usual all were welcome to the delightfully informal Chairman’s Drinks in early September, when we helped Colin decide which beers to stock for the season! It is always dangerous to pick out names, but some put in so much effort that they just have to be recognised, so thank-you in no particular order to: Derek Arnold, Pip Woolacott, John Henley, Peter and Bob Hunt, Howard and Robert Pearl, Gerry Diebel, Alan Crane, Iain Lindsay, Paul Vizard, Lee and Hils Adamson, The Field Stewards, Pete Wilson, Ian Collins, Mike Walton, Chris Birch, Malcolm McCulloch, Rob Bowyer, Nigel Featherstone, Tonya Williams, Bumble, Willy Pickance, Andy Clarke, Patrick O’Keefe, Bomber Harris, and every single junior coach and parent! There is no point in doing this if it isn’t fun, and for me, it is mostly deeply enjoyable and rewarding. Yours in Rugby Football,
Trevor Nicholson, Chairman Sevenoaks Rugby 10

INTRODUCING OUR NEW PRESIDENT, MIKE WOOLDRIDGE I am hugely honoured to have been elected president of Sevenoaks Rugby Club. My election is not without considerable sadness that I take over following the passing of our wonderful previous president, Phil Bradshaw. When Phil was ill he asked me before Christmas last year whether I would succeed him from this season. Phil and I discussed the role on a number of occasions and I was delighted to have both his and the rest of the management team’s support. Phill will be an extremely hard act to follow and one I can only try to emulate in some small way and in my own way. A little history is that I played for Sevenoaks 1st XV in 1987 when I left Tonbridge School and I have played for and been involved in our great club for every year since – some 30 years. As well as playing for the 1st and 2nd XV and of course the Mighty Acorns, I used to organise the annual dinners. It was at one of these 12 years ago that I was asked to coach the Under 7s when my son started his mini career – I am proud that he has become the third generation of Wooldridge Sevenoaks scrum halves! I coached that team through the years to Under 17s and was proud to be Head of Junior Rugby for the last 3 years. It is a real privilege to be president and I look forward to being involved in all aspects of our ‘one club’ – there is an exciting challenge for the 1st XV having gained promotion and a real enthusiasm and optimism for all the senior teams and of course our ‘so impressive’ junior section including the girls teams. I look forward to welcoming old and new friends from rugby to the Paddock in 2016/2017. Michael Wooldridge, President

2015/16 - A SEASON OF SUCCESS Director of Rugby’s season review It is fair to say that season 15/16 was a very successful one. It is certainly true to say that it was a hugely enjoyable one right across the Club and that is what we all want – fun and enjoyment as a reward for all the hard work from hundreds of dedicated volunteers, players, coaches and parents. As the rugby landscape changes, particularly as the 1st team climb the ladder, we all need to remember that, at Sevenoaks Rugby, we do this for fun and for our leisure! The One Club philosophy is alive and in extremely good health at our club and we will work tirelessly to maintain this. As I have repeatedly said in public, the 1st team captain is no more, or less, important than the little charges in our Under 6s and everyone has a place in our Club. That having been said, it would be too politically correct to leave the plaudits for our wonderful 1st XV ‘til last so let me offer the Club’s huge and collective congratulations to the boys in the 1s who gained promotion back to London & South East Division 1, through a nail biting playoff victory over London Cornish at the Paddock. The win was the culmination of a massive amount of hard work from all concerned and it all began way back in July at Sevenoaks School when pre-season training began. On their journey they overcame some seriously good teams and it is a mark of how far we have come when the crowd at the Paddock were getting restless before the boys nailed the bonus point win against Old Colfeians – it wasn’t that long ago when we would have been smashed by clubs like Colfes and Beckenham but we did the double over both of them. T Wells were the only side who pulled away from us and, despite “running on empty” towards the end of the season, our young side made it over the line and the planning for season 16/17 began, literally, the next day. Winning the Flanders 10s tournament (and the off field shenanigans that went with it) was the icing on the cake for the boys. No season review can be complete, however, without thanking our departing Head Coach Danny Vaughan and wishing him well in his ongoing, stellar, rugby career. Danny took over when the Oaks 1s were struggling and relegation from 2 South East looked a certainty. Over the last 5 years, ably supported by Jon Muchmore as the 1s Manager, he turned the ship around and promotion is his just reward – thanks for everything Danny, you will always be the most welcome man at Sevenoaks Rugby Club. Success in the league ensured we qualified for the Kent Shield final (most cup games were doubled up league games) but as this took place the day after the playoff final we decided to field a young “1st XV” consisting of 3 tough blokes who had played the day before (take a bow messrs Sedgewick, Saunders and Tree), 19
a squadron of uni boys and stalwarts from the 2s, ably led by indomitable skipper John Henley. The boys held Aylesford 1s to 5-7 at their one place until half time but finally ran out of gas and leaked a few tries towards the end. The reason I highlight this performance, which was at times breath taking, is because the people who stood up to be counted were our 2nd XV and uni boys. The 2s have had a difficult season, in that they haven’t fielded the same XV on more than one occasion, and the chopping and changing nature of the squad has made it difficult for them to play at their best all the time. But when they have been at their best they have been superb, playing a brand of rugby that has left other older sides dead in the water. The 2s ended their season in a creditable mid table but what was more important was the platform the team gave for a number of our Academy players to show the coaches and management what they can do. Mike Walton and Ian Collins, the 2s managers, deserve special praise for the way they have managed and motivated this fine (massive) squad. The same is true of Pip Woolacott with the 3s. In my opinion a sound 3rd team is essential to the success of any rugby club and ours have been excellent. With a more regular squad than the 2s the 3rd team have been able to achieve more consistency and their upper order ranking in their league reflected this. Some of the rugby that the boys played this season was of a level way higher than one would expect of a 3rd team but this is what we strive for at our club – excellence and fun! If the 2s were characterised by their young charges then, at times, the 3s were the polar opposite. On many occasions half the side were eligible to play for our wonderful Acorns side and these men doubled up all season, taking younger 3rd team sides to the cleaners whilst storming on, overcoming all comers in their own, Acorns, colours, Anyone who has represented this team knows what a unique and privileged experience it is. Having had the honour of leading them in the past my pride at seeing the Acorns rise again to be dominant, was indescribable. And how dominant were they? Kent Champions and Flanders Finalist dominant is how! The Acorns cup final win over a strong T Wells brigade was immense and the standard, and pace, of the rugby played was amazing. It was also heart-warming to see some of my old compadres (Messrs Mortassagne, Emmins, Shirtcliff P, Thurnell and Kelly) rubbing shoulders with recent 1st team graduates like George Roffey and Mark Reay. T Wells were dispatched in a thrilling game and the party began! I have said previously that the integration of our young players into the seniors is a central part of our rugby strategy and we estimate that we have used 26 Academy players in the 1s in the last 3 seasons, so our future looks rosy. The junior players at Oaks are at a standard which will see most of them capable of playing national league rugby as adults and this has been reflected in the outstanding performances of our 20

Academy sides over the last 5 years. We have the national cup in our DNA and, whilst we haven’t quite managed to win it yet, we use this competition as our benchmark. This season the u17s and u18s fell by the narrowest of margins to the eventual winners Worthing and Brentwood respectively although the 17s made up, in part, for their hurt by lifting the Kent Cup for the 5th season in a row. The Academy is all about improving the playing abilities of our young players and transitioning them to senior rugby and the improvement in the u16s is a fine case in point. A talented side with a big pack, the boys hadn’t quite fulfilled their potential until they came into the Academy, where new voices and processes seemed to energise them so much so that they held their nemesis side, Westcombe Park, to a 3-3 draw in the Kent semi-final before cruelly losing out on the toss of a coin. Nevertheless the massive improvement in this squad bodes well for next season’s national competition tilt where they will be joined by a very useful side in this year’s u15s. As we develop as a club we are rapidly integrating a playing and cultural strategy right across the club and with Adam Bowman as the new coaching supremo this will accelerate even further. The evidence of this can be seen in the way that our core junior sides (u13 to u15) have started to adopt and implement the “pattern” play that enables a side to build on a solid platform before unleashing its natural talents. This was most evident with our u13s, a squad full of promise and ability but lacking that platform to play from. Having started the season with a few defeats the boys were struggling for motivation but a new way of playing and some new voices were introduced and they finished the season losing by 5 points to a strong T Wells team in the Kent final and we have huge expectations for this group going forward. The 14s and 15s both had decent seasons but suffered from a shortage of players at times due to school commitments (we are taking steps through our State Schools programme to remedy this in the future) but nonetheless both reached one of the Kent finals with the 14s winning their Bowl cup comfortably whilst the 15s had a tough day at the office against a very aggressive Bromley side. Both squads will improve significantly next season. Girls’ rugby is only in its second season at the Paddock but the success that has been achieved by Tonya Williams and her coaches is nothing short of incredible. This season we fielded 13s and 15s squads and the younger girls took to rugby like a duck to water being unbeaten all season and lifting the Kent cup at the first time of asking. We are determined to build on the impressive start we have made with girls rugby at Oaks and we will invest more resource into this in the future. Our aim is to have our own women’s team in time but until we arrive at that place (and we will get there) we will continue to admire the flowing, but aggressive, style of rugby that our young charges demonstrate. 21
Godfrey
The mini section of our club is in the rudest of health (even if the huge numbers of players we have tests our coaching and physical structure to the limit) and we can expect to see the trophies keep flowing back to the Paddock through these superb young athletes and their excellent coaches. Whilst we don’t shy away from winning as one of our core beliefs it is important that players (whether they are at the beginning or autumn of their careers) enjoy playing rugby and enjoy life at the Paddock, so it is with pride that I note that all of our head coaches in the minis adopt the system of giving everyone a go. Only a tiny percentage of these children will go on to play at the highest level so for the vast majority what they experience at Oaks is what rugby is about to them and we aim to instil a life-long love of our wonderful game into these people. Nonetheless the players and their coaches are competitive beasts and the results that the minis have returned have been outstanding with dozens of festival trophies coming back to the club. There are too many excellent performances to mention them all but the success of the u11s, under Head Coach Steve Fitzmaurice and his colleagues, is nothing short of outstanding. With a huge number of wins under their squad belt they added the 1st and 3rd places in the Kent Cup finals and 1st in the Kent Development Cup to their roll of honour! So, it has been a wonderful season for all of our teams and we are already looking forward to the next one (although a short holiday can’t come soon enough for me!) but we need to remember that our club is about people and, whilst we celebrate the successes of Ben Earl, Jack Nay and Laurence Thresher, from our u18 squad, as they all experienced the joys of donning and England shirt this season (Ben and Jack have gone on to win professional contracts at Saracens), this review wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t say a few words about Phil Bradshaw. As you know Phil passed way recently after a courageous fight against cancer, and we are still coming to terms with this…in a way I hope we never will. Phil was our President and, quite simply, a top bloke. I got to know him when I joined the management committee and, although I only knew him for a few years, I am proud to say he was my friend. He was a friend and father to the whole club and everyone will miss him like mad but Phil would have [chastised] me for leaving this note on a sad one. I know that Phil was a very happy man on the play off day win and his contented smile, for a job well done, is what we need to take with us. RIP Phil and just watch as your club, our One Club, goes from strength to strength in the future. Roger McKerlie, Director of Rugby

EDUCATION chiefs backing Sevenoaks grammar are launching a major consultation which will help decide whether a new selective school is built in the town. For the first time, individuals, schools, councils and businesses across the district will get the chance to put pen to paper when the process starts on Monday. The eight-week consultation is a legal requirement which the school’s backer – Invicta Grammar in Maidstone – must go through as it draws up proposals to put before the Department for Education.
Scale
School loses top Ofsted rating Page 21
It is a major task; Invicta admits it has consulted before on other issues but never for anything on this scale. Dr Phil Limbert, chief executive of the trust which runs Invicta, said: “When a school wishes to expand it has to consult with the local community – other schools, parents, local government, the education authority. “Usually there is a set audience to target, but this is much wider than that.” Responsibility for organising the consultation falls to Invicta because it would be the ‘parent school’ for

thisiskent.co.uk the new Sevenoaks educational establishment. The law forbids the creation of new grammars but one can be set-up in the town if it is an ‘annexe’ or ‘satellite’ to an existing selective school like Invicta. Although the campaign to plant a grammar in Sevenoaks has been driven by Kent County Council, the authority is not allowed to mastermind the consultation itself, but it can take part in it. Dr Limbert stressed that any public feedback would not change Invicta’s proposals but could sway Government thinking when it considers the application. “It gives people the opportunity to express their opinions so that the Department for Education can take these into account,” he said. The consultation will run until mid-July, with the responses forming an appendix to the raft of papers Invicta will ultimately submit to the Gover nment. The Maidstone-based grammar is currently the highest performing
non super-selective school in Kent. Its annual GCSE and A level results also rank it in the top one per cent of UK schools. Its bosses see the Sevenoaks development as a major boost not only for families in the district but also for its existing pupils. “An organisation has to develop,” said Dr Limbert. “If it stands still, if it doesn’t move on, it will stagnate. “We believe these proposals are a win-win situation for both the hundreds of Sevenoaks parents who support selective education and the young people in Maidstone who are our students.
...or how small
Negative “If we genuinely thought this would have a negative effect on our school, we would have had nothing to do with it.” If given the green light by the Government, the Sevenoaks grammar would be the first selective school to be built in the country for 50 years. ■ Send views by July 20 to: The Clerk to the Trust, Invicta Grammar School, Huntsman Lane, Maidstone, Kent ME14 5DS (marking the envelope ‘Sevenoaks Consultation’) or by e-mail to The Clerk to the Trust at clerktotrust@viat.org.uk (marking the e-mail ‘Sevenoaks Consultation’).

DIANE CAREY Diane has been running her own business ‘A Bit Of A Do’ for many years, providing fabulous food for all occasions in homes, marquees and places of work. She was also one of the nominated caterers at Mountains Country House which is a bespoke wedding venue and frequently provided canapés for events held at Knole House. She has always provided the food for the clubs annual dinners, supporters lunches etc but 5 years ago took on the Sunday morning kitchen challenge in the hope of turning it into viable business for the club. In 2013 continuing with her role as Catering Manager she also took on the challenge of becoming Clubhouse Manager where she also now ‘tackles’ all of the cleaning, kit washing and general day-to-day maintenance of the clubhouse and clubhouse enquiries. She can also be contacted for ‘out of shop hours’ rugby kit sales. Another of her roles is to manage all clubhouse bookings, from seminars to birthday parties, celebration lunches, weddings or even children’s parties. Planning a party? Call Diane on 07988 747049 where she can discuss hire charges and bar and catering options. Charges for hire are: Kids parties £80 Booking with catering and bar £100 Booking with catering or bar £150 Booking without catering or bar £250
