National Nurses Day is observed annually on May 6th. On this day, we raise awareness of all nurse contributions and commitments and acknowledge the vital role nurses play in society. This day is also the first day of National Nurses Week and is sometimes known as National RN Recognition Day. National Nurses Week begins May 6th and ends on May 12th, which is the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 – August 13, 1910). Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English, social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She became well-known while taking care of the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale was dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp” because of her habit of making rounds at night.

HOW TO OBSERVE Recognize nurses everywhere. Celebrate their dedication and commitment to their patients and their profession. Tell someone about the excellent care you’ve received from a nurse.

4

NATIONAL NURSES DAY HISTORY The International Council For Nurses (ICN) in America started the event in 1965, though it was not officially recognised by the US Government until 1974. In 1999 nurses and public sector employees union UNISON mounted a campaign to change the date and remove the historical importance of Florence Nightingale from Nurses Week because they felt that she no longer reflected modern day nursing because of her class and social background. They thought that she was not in keeping with the multi-cultural nature of modern nursing. Unison suggested the day be celebrated on 21 May which was the birthday of Elizabeth Fry. She was a 19th century reformer who founded the Institution of Nursing Sisters several years before Florence Nightingale set up her own nursing team. She went on to improve the life of the mentally ill and made many reforms in hospitals. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) disagreed with this campaign and were backed by many more nurses who felt that Florence Nightingale was an important founder of modern nursing and should rightly be remembered and celebrated on International Nurses Day.

Pro Wrestling Chaos Return of the King The last time Pro Wrestling Chaos hosted a show was all the way back in February 2020, with their show “Requiem” and as a Bristolian wrestling fan I can honestly say, I’ve missed the Chaos. In the 2 years since their last show Chaos and their superstars have gone through changes, with the promotion under new management and even some of the wrestlers ditching old names, and forming new teams. All this added up to make Saturday’s show “Return of the King” something of a reboot. I got to the show early, to meet the performers, all of whom seemed genuinely excited to be there. Even the staff on the door and the ladies selling those elusive raffle tickets seemed more hyped than usual, to say there was a buzz in the air would be an understatement. I took my seat and waited for the rest of my party to arrive, whilst waiting I purchased the show’s new t-shirt, and as the crowd were filling in you could feel the anticipation rising. The fan club, Chaos Club, took a group picture and everyone was excited to see each other again and to be supporting their favourite indie company again.

6

Everything went quiet, the voice came over the speaker welcoming us back to the show, and the 250 fans erupted. It was time. The opening match was Harrison Bennett vs Tate Mayfairs (accompanied by Mulligan) which was an outstanding opening match. Bennett (fka Beano) was easily the fan favourite and came out to a hero’s welcome. Mayfairs had been building to this match via hijacking Chaos’ facebook page. They had a really good back and forth match with Mayfairs winning by using the brass knuckles on Bennet while the ref was distracted by Mulligan. The next match a singles match in the women’s division between Laura DiMatteo and Jetta. This was a slower more technical match with Jetta running down the crowd for not showing her the respect she felt she deserved. However, this left herself open to be submitted by DiMatteo, this is a perfect example of the potential the women’s division has to offer. Maiden of Chaos Champion Dani Luna came out to cut a passionate promo on her recent injury, she wanted to do the right thing and forfeit the championship to allow the other women a shot. This did not go down well with the crowd who clearly adore Dani and just want to see her defend her belt.

We move on from that sombre moment to the highlight of the night. For the third match we had a Triple Threat Tag Team Match for the vacant Knights of Chaos Championship (Chaos’ tag team titles). We had the Sunshine Machine vs Smoking Aces vs Dead Sad Boys, in what was the show stealer. These 6 men gave us everything in this match, from technical wrestling, to suplexes, to high spots, to crowd brawling and everything in-between. It all ended with Smoking Aces picking up the win and becoming the NEW Knights of Chaos. Then came the well-deserved intermission, which was needed as my voice was horse from cheering so much, and possibly the most over segment of the night: the raffle. 3 winners won some outstanding prizes, including free wrestling tickets! After the break we jump right back to the action with a singles match for the No.1 Contender spot for the King of Chaos Championship. Wales’s own Brendan White took on “The English Lion” Eddie Ryan who came accompanied by one of my personal favourite personalities, Dr. Pariah Kahn. This match had fans split down the middle, in this clash of the titans. Brendan got the win but was unhappy with the mixed reaction calling it disrespectful from the fans. No longer wanting to represent Chaos, so i

Instead of being the number 1 contender Brendan White Re-crowns himself “The All Wales” WChampion, the belt he won in Dragon Pro Wrestling. Finally, we move to the Main event. King of Chaos: Danny Jones defended his title against Mark Haskins (accompanied by his wife Vicky Haskins) in a great match, with Haskins showing his technical excellence and Danny showing why he’s the crowd favourite. Danny Jones won the match and retained his title, closing off the show by thanking the crowd and hyping up the future of Pro Wrestling Chaos. This show was Outstanding! Great atmosphere & great matches, what more could you ask for. If you’ve never watched pro wrestling chaos and you’re even remotely interested in pro wrestling, you have to give this company shot, they will blow you away. Welcome Back Chaos. What to know about walking for weight loss Regular walking offers many potential health benefits, including weight loss. It is also one of the easiest and most cost effective forms of exercise a person can do. Many people can walk regularly and reap the benefits of being more active.

One study concluded that individuals who walked at 2.5 miles per hour (mph) on a flat surface while wearing a weighted vest that weighed 15% of their weight, burned 12% more calories than a person who did not wear a vest.

Although any increase in activity level will bring benefits, there are some things a person can do to increase the amount of fat they burn while walking. Tips include:

A person wearing a weighted vest that represented 10% of their body weight and who walked at the same pace on a 5-10% gradient burned an average of 13% more calories.

Wearing a weighted vest Adding extra weight to a workout will burn more calories. Heavier people burn more calories because their bodies require more energy to perform the same task than someone who is not as heavy; wearing a weighted vest while walking encourages a person’s body to work harder during a walk.

A person should aim to walk up hills, stairs, or inclines two to three times a week.

Incorporating resistance training intervals Adding resistance training, such as tricep dips, can make walks more beneficial. To help burn more calories and increase the growth of new muscle, a person can try adding in resistance training during their walk.

Doing three shorter walks a day Though long walks are good, shorter, more frequent walks can also provide benefits. Some people may find it easier to maintain their daily exercise by doing shorter walks throughout the day instead of taking a much longer walk once a day. Experts believe that taking a walk after each meal also brings benefits. According to one study on inactive people over 60 years old, walking for 15 minutes three times a day after meals can help control blood sugar levels better than walking once a day for 45 minutes.

You will come out onto a gravel track, so turn left onto Hill Lane, then left onto the B3124, opposite the White Hart pub.The pavement runs out just after the car garage and the speed limit increases to 50mph, so take care walking on the grass verges. You will eventually come to a short row of houses on the right-hand side. The public footpath starts on the left, opposite the lay-by. Go through the wooden kissing gate and up the narrow path.Turn right at the t-junction in the path. This is the start of Old Black Rock Quarry, part of Weston Big Wood nature reserve. Take the right-hand footpath, part of the Gordano Round. The path comes to a junction but continue ahead, on the level, which leads into a field. Continue ahead and veer towards the top far corner, where trees have been cleared and a new metal kissing gate installed. Go through here and continue across the next field, towards another kissing gate. You will come out at a playing field sogo around the equipment, through the gate and left onto Underwood Road. At the end, cross the road into Wetlands Lane, right onto St. Mary’s Road, and up a narrow alley on the left next to a stone house called The Cot Continue to the end, veer right out of The Garstons, and left onto St Peter’s Road. Go past the church and continue a head, going across to Slade Road, over the Cabstand into Battery Road, and then into Rodmoor Road. This leads back to the Lake Ground.

discover Britain's favourite sandwich This year, Britain’s best-loved sandwich is the bacon butty. Other popular fillings include cheese and pickle, chicken and bacon, and even a filling of crisps. We know the sandwich is still a national treasure and the most popular meal in the UK, accounting for 5.9bn meal occasions1. Interestingly, this time last year, cheese topped the chart, closely followed by ham and cheese, which has now slipped to sixth place with the nation favouring sausage and egg mayonnaise a year on. When it comes to preparing the perfect sandwich, the research revealed ‘white medium sliced bread with the crusts left on and cut into squares’, as the top choice. But it’s not just sandwiches being enjoyed more by the nation, a third of adults are eating more toasties now than they did before the lockdown, with cheese the most popular filling. As well as toastie fillings, the research identified the condiments most enjoyed with sandwiches to be pickle (40%), ketchup (37%) and mayonnaise (55%). Others choose to spice up their sarnie with a splash of sriracha (6%), a drop of tabasco (6%) or a spread of English mustard (34%). The research also found that almost half of the nation (43%) are eating more bread and toast (34%) since lockdown.

22

The average person will enjoy four sandwiches and two toasties during a typical week – but a fifth of the nation will eat more than seven sandwiches in a seven-day period whilst social distancing continues. Also, the average household is getting through two loaves of bread a week – with a quarter consuming more than three loaves a week (24%). Nearly a third of Brits said the reason they’ve had more bread is because they aren’t buying as many meals away from home, and 29 per cent put it down to having lots of other food in the house which goes well with it. Lunch is still the most popular time to enjoy a sarnie or toastie with 82 per cent doing so, while a quarter of Brits (23%) frequently indulge by snacking on a sandwich. More than a third actually prefer sandwiches for lunch over a hot meal, and 24% would even struggle to go a day without enjoying a slice of bread. In fact, sandwiches account for 56% of all carried out lunches and 32% of all in home occasions2. However, no longer are people creatures of habit as 73 per cent of the nation try to alternate their sandwich fillings, and one in 10 have been more experimental with fillings during lockdown. The research revealed the weird, whacky and unusual creations put together by the UK where one person admitted to enjoying a chocolate spread and salami sandwich. Another confessed to eating a chocolate biscuit sandwich, with corned beef and peanut butter also among the inventive combinations.

Out and about in Brislington West with Jos and Andrew

Today (Thursday 5 May) you have the chance to give your verdict on ten years of mayoral failure in a referendum on the governance of Bristol. At the recent campaign launch, it was great to hear from every political party in Bristol, including many Labour Party members, on why the current system of local governance is bad for Bristol and bad for democracy. We have been delivering Scrap the Mayor leaflets across Greater Brislington over the last few weeks and the conversations we’ve had with local residents have been overwhelmingly in favour of change. The referendum, which was proposed by the Bristol Lib Dems and supported by Green and Conservative councillors, will give voters a chance to have their say on 5 May. The mayoral system in Bristol has a record of shame with £50m of taxpayers’ money thrown down the drain on Bristol Energy, £12m wasted on two bridges to nowhere at Arena Island, parks’ budgets slashed and playgrounds left with no swings, disabled children’s education neglected with hundreds of special school places not provided, and millions more to be cut from the city’s adult social care budget. 24

Because of the over-centralisation of power in the hands of one person, decisions have been made behind closed doors with overpaid, unaccountable advisers and unelected city elites, while local residents and councillors from every party have been ignored and have been unable to stop the waste. The alternative system of governance, the Modern Committee System, is being adopted by councils all over the country, from Glasgow to Sheffield and from Nottingham to Brighton, and it’s easy to see why. The Committee System is a much fairer, more cooperative way of making decisions, ensuring every voice is heard, not just one! On 5 May you can vote to end the waste and restore local democracy. Please vote for a better Bristol. Vote for change. Vote to scrap the Mayor! You can watch a short, explanatory video here: www.youtu.be/ fjrAIDASFnc Volunteering for the Greenway: This Saturday 7th May at 10am, those interested in volunteering are invited to help with path clearance work on the southern section of our new traffic-free path, the Brislington Greenway, to accelerate its opening date.

The plan is to work on the section from the entry point at Lodekka Pub going south to the Talbot Road bridge. Progress is to be made on creating a 4m wide passage. The route will be marked out and cleared to create a useable path. This will require the removal of the covering of moss, leaf mould, debris, wood, litter & broken glass, which has built up on the tarmac beneath. The work will be coordinated by the Project Manager for Greenways & Cycleroutes, who are the lead contractor on the work. If you are interested in joining and helping, please send an email to info@bristolcycling.org.uk using ‘Tramway Volunteer’ in the email title. You will be sent further information.

No Mow May!

Sparke Evans update:

People who live or work in, or travel to our city centre are being asked for feedback to guide the initial stages of the Plan, which will build on the One City Plan, and the City Centre Framework, adopted in 2020, to set out a vision for our city centre up to 2050.

Following our recent campaign, Bristol City Council announced in January that Sparke Evans footbridge would be included in a £15m, 5-year repair and maintenance programme along with a list of 5 other bridges across the New Cut. However, in a recent update, Sparke Evans bridge has been omitted from the list. We have written to the cabinet member responsible asking for clarification. Sparke Evans is a key traffic-free route from our part of Bristol into the city centre and allows users to avoid the busy Bath Road.

This May there is a very easy thing you can do in your garden to help wild flowers and struggling pollinators – put your lawnmowers away for No Mow May. Whether it’s a small patch or your whole lawn, you can have an impact. Find out more here: City Centre consultation: Plans to revitalise the centre of Bristol to make it a more family-friendly, safer, healthier, and greener place are set to be developed in the City Centre Development and Delivery Plan (Plan).

25

The Plan will cover a large area of central Bristol, extending from Marlborough Street and the St James Barton roundabout in the north, to Castle Park in the south, Bond Street South in the east and St Augustine’s Parade in the west. The Plan will consider key topics including: • Character and use – how our city centre might look, feel and be used in the future • Economy and skills – how to provide a range of opportunities for jobs and business • Housing – how to make our city centre an attractive place to live • Movement – how to make our city safe and accessible for everyone • Streets, parks and open spaces – how to provide the quality public spaces needed to support healthy, active communities • Nature – how to preserve and enhance biodiversity and benefit from nature’s positive impact on our city. • Climate change - how redevelopment in our city centre can support the council’s aim to be carbon neutral and climate resilient. The Plan will set out proposals for enhancements to Castle Park and the St James Barton area (including the Bearpit and St James’ Park).

26

It will also establish a vision and set out principles for the future development of other key sites including The Galleries, Fairfax Street, Callowhill Court, Haymarket, and the former Debenhams store. The City Centre Development and Delivery Plan does not include the harbour area which is being considered through separate projects, nor the area in front of the Hippodrome. This first round of informal engagement will run for four weeks from Monday 25 April to Monday 23 May 2022. To read about the issues the City Centre Development and Delivery Plan will address, add comments to an interactive map and fill in a short survey go to: www.citycentrebristol.co.uk. There will be further opportunity for engagement over the summer and a period of formal consultation later in the year. Multi-million-pound bridge improvement programme A multi-million-pound investment in some of the city’s most iconic and much used bridges has been proposed to deliver necessary repairs and maintenance over a five-year period. The works required to six bridges along the New Cut include joint repairs, resurfacing and masonry strengthening to ensure each remains open and safe for many years to come. The six bridges that make up this proposal are Bath Bridge, Bedminster New Bridge, Bedminster Old Bridge, Gaol Ferry Bridge, Langton Street Footbridge and Vauxhall Footbridge. It’s proposed that the investment begins with works to Gaol Ferry Bridge to replace the structural steel beams, replace the bridge decking, repair some stonework, and repaint the bridge. Should the £1 million funding for the repair and refurbishment works receive Cabinet approval, Gaol Ferry Bridge will completely close in June this year and remain shut for the duration of the works which are expected to last six months. Every effort is being made to complete works and reopen the bridge as soon as possible. The proposed repairs to the six bridges along the New Cut and sections of the river wall will be discussed and decided on at the upcoming meeting of the Cabinet on Tuesday 10 May. 28

Councillor Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Each of these bridges provide important car, walking, cycling and public transport routes which contribute greatly to connecting neighbourhoods along the River Avon. This proposed investment emphasises the critical role of each of these bridges and how vital it is that we invest now to ensure they continue to provide safe and useable routes for many years to come. “I am pleased we are in a position to give a concrete approach to how we’ll tackle this challenge and put Gaol Ferry Bridge forward to be the first for refurbishment. Our highways and structures teams have been working on developing the proposed plan for this bridge with a focus on trying to minimise the impact on people who use the bridge and local businesses. This work has ensured that a range of options have been considered and the best possible solution available is being put forward. Although I recognise this will result in some disruption for people we will stay in touch with local businesses and the community to keep everyone updated on the work. The diversions being put in place will be clearly signposted and communicated across all media.” The diversions planned for the closure will signpost people along routes via Bedminster Bridges and Bathurst Bridge or across Vauxhall Bridge.

These routes have been informed by work carried out earlier this year when officers surveyed people who cross and use the footbridge to find out where they were travelling from and heading to, and the reasons and timings of their journeys. The results are being used to map out the various diversionary routes to minimise disruption while the footbridge is closed. Funding for the proposed repairs and maintenance would come mostly from the recently agreed City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) funding with £500k identified in the existing Highways Capital Budget approved by Full Council in February 2022.

Council to decide future for Castlewood site Castlewood site at Clevedon could soon be available for redevelopment to support the town's emerging placemaking strategy, subject to a decision by councillors. North Somerset councillors will be asked to consider the future of the site at the next Council meeting on Tuesday 10 May. They will be asked to agree to a process which will enable the council to vacate the offices on the site and make it available for redevelopment. The council purchased the site in 2010 as part of an approach to consolidate activities from multiple buildings to two main office locations. The pandemic has rapidly accelerated the council's ambitions to use its office space more efficiently and effectively, reducing costs and carbon footprint. Cllr Steve Bridger, the council's executive member for assets and capital delivery said: "Like employers across the world, we have transformed how we work with many staff working at least part of their time from home. We no longer need two large office buildings and can save significantly on operating costs and reduce our carbon footprint by releasing the Castlewood site for redevelopment. "The building has a very poor energy rating and retaining it would make it difficult to achieve our carbon net zero goal and it could become very expensive with rising energy costs." The Castlewood site accounts for almost 20 per cent of the council’s energy use and approximately 40 per cent of the net annual costs of the building are related to energy usage at the site. These costs are expected to face significant price inflation in coming years.

30

Subject to approval by councillors, council officers will develop options for the future of the site. These could include homes, space for business or a mixed-use development. Before the pandemic, very little of the council's customer contact took place at Castlewood, but the council is keen to make face-to-face services more widely available closer to where people live. Following the approval of a new customer services strategy this week, a pilot scheme will be developed where council officers visit libraries and join the mobile library at locations across North Somerset. Cllr Bridger added: "We want this decision to be the right one for the people of Clevedon, North Somerset, the local economy and the environment. We are committed to retaining jobs in the area and the council jobs currently located at Castlewood will stay within the North Somerset economy. "We'll be looking at the redevelopment of the site to secure investment in North Somerset and Clevedon in particular as part of the placemaking strategy for the town which partners in Clevedon have been working on over the past year." Residents can also have an early say on the future of the site by giving their views as part of the council's current consultation on a development programme for land it owns. Castlewood is one of the sites included for potential development. Find out more and take part in the consultation by 9am on Monday 20 June online at www.n-somerset. gov.uk/nscsites. The meeting to discuss Castlewood takes place at 6pm on Tuesday 10 May at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare. It will be broadcast on YouTube at www.youtu.be/ ep-N_agUVdA. The meeting agenda is available on the council's website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/meetings.

TIME AND MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR LANDLORDS Being a self-managing landlord is really hard work and never more so than right now. There are 178 pieces of legislation, regulations, and compliance in the private rental sector and, as a landlord, you are expected to know all about them and implement them, as applicable. We know lots of self-managing landlords and they take on the management of their properties for a variety of reasons – some manage because they are portfolio builders who haven’t reached the point of taking on an agent just yet; some have had bad experiences with agents and some like to be hands on, at the coal face and manage themselves. Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, they all work extremely hard, know how to juggle and are usually “on call” 24 hours a day – it’s a very hard job, it’s time consuming and you need to have a long list of skill sets!

Whenever you do something, for the first time, document it and create a template. That way, the next time you come to do it, you won’t be wasting valuable time thinking “how did I do that?” Or “what wording did I use for that?” Think and learn the procedure once and then template it, so that you can rinse and repeat for the next occasion, saving yourself valuable time and minimising mistakes. What can be templated?

Templates don’t just have to be documents, they can be letters, emails, procedures and even shortcuts on your phone, replies to texts, WhatsApp messages and for communicating on your favourite platforms like Spare Room etc. You don’t have to waste time thinking “what did I say/do last time?” If it’s templated, then it’s there, whenever you need it and it’s consistent. It also means that So, in honour of all the self-managing landif, for some reason, you are not available, lords out there, this one is for you! Here are some top tips to help make life a little easier then someone else can communicate your and, hopefully, simpler. We have put together procedures, using “your voice” in any communications with your tenants, your team our 5 top tips for you – but remember this is or any other interested parties. not an exhaustive list and there are lots of things that you can do to maximise your Do regular inspections rentals and minimise your voids – also, our door is always open if you decide that you’d Not doing regular inspections, because you’re like an agent who will work alongside you to “too busy” is a false economy of time. protect both you and your asset and, help maximise your portfolio. We hear, time and time again from landlords, that they “just don’t have time…” to do Here are our top 5 tips: inspections or that they” …have a great relationship with their tenants” and a myriad Templates of other justifications. This is very short-sighted because the protection of your Documenting standard procedures saves biggest asset should never ever be left huge amounts of time. to chance or a “gut feeling” and because inspections are your opportunity to catch any issues, and sort them, before they become a 32 bigger problem.

The phrase “a stitch in time saves nine” was made for property inspections – have a checklist, have a procedure and you will be “in and out” in no time and it will save you no end of time and hassle! Pictures and videos of issues Getting tenants to send pictures and videos can save so much time! It’s hard not to have that “sinking feeling” when you get a message from a tenant that something is amiss; especially when you are a self-managing landlord, because this usually means that you will be the one jump ing in the car to go and assess the damage! We find that asking tenants to send a picture or, even better, a video of the problem, helps tremendously. Often it is something that you can talk them through over the phone or via whatever platform you use for communication. If action is required, then you will not be in the dark and can make an informed decision as to whether you need to visit the property or can call your maintenance team direct, thereby dispensing with unnecessary journeys.

This is also especially good for appliance and boiler breakdowns, as tenants can provide details of make, model and serial numbers, so that you have all the information to hand when calling breakdown companies. The bonus, also, here is that it gets tenants into the habit of taking responsibility for their home, which is in the interest of both parties. Qualify applicants Its impossible to overstate the importance of tenant selection. Tenant selection is more important than ever and if you are a self-managing landlord, then you will find that this takes up large chunks of your time. Where do you find your tenants and how do you conduct viewings? Do you have a pre-selection process and, if so, how stringent is it? The answers to these questions will determine just how much time you spend doing viewings and how much of that time could be saved if you had a solid pre-viewings qualification procedure in place. Keep detailed notes The importance of detailed note-keeping, about every property. There is really nothing worse than being in a stressful situation and not having the right information to hand. With a property, this stressful situation could mean fire, flood, gas leak or a whole number of other dramatic and highly charged situations – but you don’t need to turn a drama into a crisis! Keeping detailed notes, about every property in your portfolio is invaluable. Things like the location of the stop cock, gas meter, gas shut off valve and consumer unit and information about broadband passwords, make and model of the boiler, white goods and even things like paint colours (especially of any feature walls). 33

Home Improvement tips

Laminate Flooring In Five Steps! Laminate is attractive for a few reasons. It is just a good tight floor that requires minimal maintenance. Laminate flooring is normally durable and in comparison with other types of flooring not costly. If you're following theses steps carefully, it is possible to setup any flooring straight away on your own. A fairly nice activity job for two individuals to undertake. What do I need? - Laminate - Underfloor + joining tape - Skirtings - Mitre Saw / Jig Saw - Tapeline - Hammer - Spacers - Pencil - Square Step 1 Prepare everything you have obtained for the project to start out. The ground where one must place the laminate ought to be completely flat and free of dirt and dust. Step 2 Then you may start with the actual sub floor. This is basically the sound, humidity and heat insulation. There are numerous types of flooring on the market. Make sure when choosing your sub floor to select the one that fits your floor the best. When rolling out the sub floor. Simply place the underlay along with joining tape together. 38

Step 3 Now you can begin at one corner, between the walls and the laminate place spacers an 8mm apart around the room between the wall and the laminate. This help the laminate to expand against the wall in hot and cold climates. First, place a whole sheet of flooring. After that you can work the room. Hold the plank in a angle of about forty-five degrees and tap the boards together using a rubber hammer and off cut of laminate to ensure you don’t ruin the tung or grove of the next board. I recommend using a dremel tool to cut out spaces under skirting that is surrounding doors to get a seamless finish if your leaving the original skirting in place Step 4 When the laminate is completed , you may start the skirting to hide the 8mm. You can find a variety of skirting for sale at places like B and Q. The simplest to use is the bull nosed variety. This can be a good choice seeing as there are absolutely no fancy edges to cut. Cut the skirting boards inside a corner with a miter saw at forty-five degrees. This way you will get good, tight edges. Step 5 Your floor is ready! Thoroughly clean the surface with a lightweight. Wet cloth. Not too wet, because laminate are not able to endure that. Be careful while positioning the furniture. Putting them on laminate (specially with the cheaper ones) can quickly get them scratched. The best you can do is ensure the bottom part of the legs is properly flat.

50 STATE-OF-THEART CLUB CAR BUGGIES The Manor House Golf Club, Wiltshire, has purchased a fleet of 50 golf buggies from leading manufacturer, Club Car. The lithium battery cars each include full Visage GPS touch screens, designed to further enhance golfers’ experiences on the course. The heightened GPS systems on the new fleet provide golfers with more accurate distance measuring and location services. The state-of-the-art buggies feature additional environmentally friendly benefits, including being lighter in weight than older, lead acid battery buggies. Each charge of the battery lasts approximately 12 hours, enabling golfers to complete 36 holes without a loss of power.

In addition, all buggies have also been kitted out with dual USB charging ports, to keep golfers connected during their round. This is expected to prove popular with corporate members of the club in particular, who benefit from members-only tee times as well as use of the club’s meeting facilities. Future plans for the new buggies include allowing golfers to order food from the clubhouse while out on a round. The Manor House golf team plan to offer a limited choice of menu items that can be ordered using the touch screens when on the 8th hole. Golfers can then collect their order from the club’s Airstream half-way house. Andrew Ryan added: “We are excited to offer golfers more choice when it comes to ‘on course’ refreshments during their round. We are trialling this now and aim to launch the service fully in the early summer months.”

The Manor House is renowned as an exceptional destination for avid golfers with some of the most idyllic scenery which can be seen on an English golf course. Go Nippy! Plumbers on bikes on the streets of Bristol Sam Blakeney, left, with Tom Godsell on the new nippychecks cargo bikes

The fully electric service will see a team of engineers riding to properties in the city to maintain boilers, central heating and electrical systems and appliances.

“We’ve often thought that using a half empty van to splutter its way around the city didn’t really make sense for anyone. In nippychecks, we think we’ve found an answer.”

Called nippychecks, the business will operate out of premises in Easton and will serve domestic homeowners as well as helping maintain the portfolios of city landlords and lettings agents.

The two new vehicles have been brought from Oxfordshire-based EAV Ltd and are made from recyclable and sustainably sourced materials.

The new venture comes after a £24,000 investment in two new cargo bikes by South Gloucestershire business West Country Heating and Plumbing. With a range of 40 miles and a top speed of 15 mph, the bikes are cycle lane permitted and can carry up to 150kg of cargo – easily enough for a toolbox and spare boiler parts. Sam Blakeney, managing director of nippychecks and WCHP, said that the new company was following in the tyre tracks of similar services already offered in the city. “There’s no reason why nippychecks can’t do for plumbing and heating what Deliveroo has done for food,” he said. “Nippychecks solves a number of problems – it does its bit to cut congestion and improve air quality in the city, it provides a service free from the constraints of traffic problems, it’s cost-effective and ethical, too. 46

Leo Bethell, head of partnerships at EAV said: “We’re delighted to be providing two of our lightweight urban vehicles to nippychecks and of course we’re excited to see them making an impact in Bristol. “Cargo bikes help businesses complete more services and deliveries in a shorter amount of time by accessing cycle lanes and pedestrian routes, while actively reducing congestion in urban environments. “They’re safe, practical, zero emissions and eco-friendly, so we believe they’re going to play a big role in improving air quality and saving business – and their customers – time and money as well as making the centre of Bristol a better place to be.” The two nippychecks cargo bikes will be branded in Bristol Blue and bright yellow, to reflect the heritage of the city while adding a modern, innovative look the service.

“We love this city and want to be part of its sustainable and cycling identity,” said Sam. “While we’ve got a challenge establish Nippy as part of the property scene, once we’re really up and running then I’m hoping to add more vehicles to the fleet before too long. “While we’re a fun and innovative company, it’s really important that we’re professional, too. Through West Country we have all the necessary systems and experience in place to ensure our services are provided smoothly and efficiently. “We’ve set up a portal through which landlords and lettings agents can safely store and access all of their certifications. Meanwhile our tracker app will let them, as well as homeowners, check Nippy’s progress and whereabouts. “It’s a modern business for modern times, and we’re looking forward to getting out and about in Bristol. Go Nippy!”

BillyChip Chosen as Charity for New Memory Rose ®

Meg Abernethy-Hope, Co-Founder at BillyChip, with one of the knitted roses created to help fundraise the Jennifer Rose Sell bloom

BillyChip® will be the nominated charity for a new rose being launched at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Jennifer Rose Sell bloom has been created in memory of a young Somerset woman who was an innocent victim of a road traffic incident caused by a drunk driver. The Rose, which has been bred by Philip Harkness of Harkness Roses, will be one of three new plants launched by the world -renowned rose breeder at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. After the launch, the Rose will be available for £22.99 RRP with £2.50 from each sale donated to BillyChip. The funds will be used to provide Starter Boxes for new outlets signing up to the BillyChip scheme. Jon Hope, Co-Founder at BillyChip shared: "Jenny joined us for one of our first events to raise money to start-up BillyChip. In her memory, Jenny's friends and family have been raising money to create the Jennifer Rose Sell bloom and her parents decided that a proportion of the sale of each Rose will be donated to our scheme. 48

This is such a positive collaboration, created out of such tragedy, that will create an everlasting legacy for two incredible young people." The Rose was created following a fundraising effort initiated by the mothers of Jenny's school friends who began knitting and crocheting roses and selling them locally. Huge demand for the handcrafted roses saw knitting groups, crafters, community groups, friends and individuals from across the country stepping in, with some roses arriving from as far as the USA and New Zealand. The 'Jennifer Rose Sell‘ rose is a mid-pink floribunda that creates a beautiful display with up to 30 petals per bloom, and 6-8 flowers per cluster. It offers repeat flowering from early summer through to the first frosts, which is even more rewarding because of its gorgeous fragrance. Perfect for beds, borders, and large patio containers, it grows to approximately 90cm tall.

Charity Walk the Walk makes £100,000 grant to Penny Brohn UK for vital online cancer support More than 6,000 cancer patients across the UK are set to benefit from a £100,000 grant made by health charity Walk the Walk, to cancer support charity Penny Brohn UK.

Walk the Walk’s grant will allow Penny Brohn UK to continue providing nationwide online support services, which run alongside the “in-person” programme at its Bristol headquarters. From wherever they are in the country, cancer patients can access Penny Brohn’s huge variety of online sessions and services, which have been developed during the pandemic. These include:One-to-one online doctor support, counselling and nutritional therapy Phone counselling and consultations Online community group sessions, including: “Resilience Room”, “Relaxation Room”, “Your Self-Care Toolbox”, Nutrition Know How”, physical activity sessions, yoga and more 50 .

Julie Worrall, CEO of Penny Brohn UK, said: “We can’t thank Walk the Walk and those who put in the miles to raise funds for them enough. This grant is vitally needed as we drive through the changes we have introduced as a result of the impact of Covid-19. “Walk the Walk has been Penny Brohn’s most significant and cherished funding partner for the last two decades. We have received a transformational £21 million of funding over the years, which has enabled us to help many tens of thousands of people across the UK live well with cancer. “This latest grant will enable us to drive through plans we made in December last year to support the cancer community, who will be living with the impact of Covid-19 for years to come. We moved support services online and this now gives us the opportunity to provide accessible support for many more people living with cancer

“Everything is now online as well as face to face. The funding will support both one-toone digital support, counselling and therapy and online group sessions for our community. Some 45,000 fewer cancer patients started their treatment last year compared to the same period pre-pandemic. This means that there is going to be continuing demand for support that people can access from their own homes over the internet.” A client of Penny Brohn, who is living with breast cancer, said: “Cancer is so much more than a medical diagnosis. So, I was determined to do everything I could to help myself. When I discovered the Penny Brohn UK website, I felt overwhelmed by what they offer, for free. A wide range of Zoom sessions and courses for cancer patients, every week. Subjects range from nutrition, treatment support and movement classes to relaxation sessions plus individual counselling and emotional support. They’re making my journey so much easier, giving me focus and enabling me to make informed decisions about so many parts of my treatment.” Health charity Walk the Walk is best known for its flagship fundraising event, The MoonWalk London, when thousands of women and men wearing decorated bras walk marathons through the streets of London.

This year’s MoonWalk London is taking place on Saturday 14th May - walkers can sign up for a virtual walking challenge during the day, or for the LIVE MoonWalk event, which takes place overnight. Entries are open at www.walkthewalk.org Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk said: “I’m thrilled that Walk the Walk is able to support Penny Brohn UK with this grant and that so many thousands of cancer patients across the UK will benefit as a result. For people diagnosed with breast cancer during the pandemic – and for those who continue to be diagnosed late as a result of it – services provided by charities like Penny Brohn UK are needed more than ever. The past two years have been extremely tough for everyone, but Walk the Walk’s wonderful supporters have continued raising vital funds during all the lockdowns, for which I really cannot thank them enough. “You still have time to join us at The MoonWalk London 2022 on Saturday 14th May – sign up now, either for the LIVE or virtual challenge and help us continue making a difference, where it’s needed most.”
