What refund rights are in place for holidays abroad?

The UK Government has added some more countries to its travel red list and took Portugal off its green status. With Covid still widespread in many countries, tourists will have to think carefully about their spending on holidays. Where will I be able to go on holiday? England has a limited number of green list destinations, where people can travel without having to quarantine on their return. However, you will have to take a Covid test before and after the trip. All other countries are rated amber or red, and travellers must quarantine after visiting them. Portugal has now moved to the amber list, and seven other countries - including Sri Lanka and Egypt - have been added to the red list too. Scotland,Northern Ireland and Wales are following England’s red, amber and green traffic light system - although Wales’ First Minister Mark Drakeford states traveling abroad is “best avoided”. Can I cancel my holiday if it turns out I have to self-isolate on my return? There is always a risk that a green-list country may move to the amber or red list. If this happens you will need to quarantine after your holiday - something that could be difficult for many people. 4

It is best to study their policies before booking a flight, or see whether they can offer If the Foreign Office advises against travel to some support if you have already booked and a country, then all but a few of travel want to cancel. insurance policies would be invalid. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said in am online statement that government advice is not to book any holiday which does not include a refund, in the event that the Covid-related situation changes. Will I be refunded if my holiday is cancelled? If the UK Government announces that travel to a specific country is not advised, then airlines and travel companies are likely to cancel any pre-booked flights or holidays there. If this happens, you are entitled to a full refund, and you can choose to receive that refund in cash.

Does my insurance cover me if I travel to a amber-list country? Anyone planning to travel to an amber-list country should look up their proposed destination on the Foreign Office (FCO)’s country-by-country list. If the Foreign Office advises against travel to a certain country, then travel insurance maybe invalid. If not, then the cost of medical treatment abroad would be covered. In most cases that would include treatment if you contracted Covid.

Chief Inspector awarded for outstanding contributions to domestic abuse at Police Federation of England and Wales Annual Conference Avon and Somerset Police’s Chief Inspector Sharon Baker has been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award 2021 at the Police Federation of England and Wales’ (PFEW) annual conference. C/Inspector Baker was awarded for her outstanding work around domestic violence including a powerful video she made sharing her own experience of living in a controlling and abusive relationship. The video, which was shared via Avon and Somerset Police’s social media platforms and has subsequently been viewed by thousands of people, urged other victims to break the silence about their abuse and to find help and support as soon as possible. The video caused a ripple effect through the community with many people sharing their support towards C/Inspector Baker, and others commenting that she had inspired them to talk about, and report, their own experiences of abuse.

6

C/Inspector Baker, who is also the strategic lead for domestic abuse at Avon and Somerset Police, has continued her work by working together with partner organisations to improve services delivered to victims and has spearheaded a new framework to address how disclosures of domestic abuse are managed within Avon and Somerset Police. Her video is also being used by other police forces as part of domestic abuse training for frontline officers. This year marks the seventh annual Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award – recognising the dedication to duty by female officers and celebrating those who have gone above and beyond to make a difference, resulting in a positive impact on others. C/Inspector Baker’s work was singled out amongst a record number of nominations to the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award. Zoe Wakefield, Chair of PFEW’s National Women’s Group, said: “By bravely sharing her own experiences of domestic abuse, Chief Inspector Baker has given a voice to those who have felt unable to speak out.

Her dedication to using her own personal experiences to help others is incredible and as the national lead of the Women’s Group for PFEW, I am very proud of what she has achieved; she is a truly worthy winner of this award.” C/Inspector Sharon Baker commented: “When I recorded my video back in December, I could never have imagined the impact sharing my story could have. I have been blown away by the amount of emails, phone calls and messages I have received from people not just from within the force but also other police forces, members of the public and partner organisations. I created the video in the hope that my story would resonate with someone, somewhere and would have the power to make them stop and think about their situation and, hopefully, push them to find help as soon as possible. “I’m honoured to have been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award and I’m delighted the work we are doing to tackle these hideous crimes is being recognised on a national platform. I am committed to tackling domestic abuse in all its shapes and forms and hope I have, in some small way, given a voice to those who have felt unable to speak out”. The Police Federation of England and Wale’s Annual Conference is a flagship event in the policing calendar, attracting speakers and delegates from the UK and overseas, bringing together practitioners, policy decision-makers and key policing stakeholders. Guests in attendance included the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC), College of Policing (CoP), Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service (HMICFRS). Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “I can not think of a more deserving recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award than Sharon. “I can’t begin to imagine how challenging it must have been for Sharon to sit in front of the camera and talk about such a life-changing and traumatic experience. And she did this out of the completely selfless hope that she could empower someone else to talk out and break the cycle of abuse.

“When concern for victims of domestic abuse was at its peak due to lockdown restrictions, I can only hope that Sharon’s message was able to find those most in need and helped them to find their voice. “Sharon is humble, modest and relatable and she has used her position to empower many people within and outside the organisation to start a conversation around domestic abuse and the awful consequences it can have on someone’s life. Sharon is a survivor and thanks to her bravery and courage she will remind other survivors of domestic abuse that they are not alone. Congratulations on behalf of everyone at Avon and Somerset Police”. Sharon’s video can be viewed HERE. For more information on domestic abuse and local support services click the image on the left.

Halogen light bulb sales will be banned in the United Kingdom under new climate change plans The sale of halogen light bulbs are going to banned in the UK from September 2021, with fluorescent lights following, under the government climate change plans.

LED bulbs could be incorporated into the fluorescent light fittings as a more energyefficient alternative, officials in an online statement said.

This bright move will cut 1.26 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year and deliver consumers savings, officials say.

Legislation will also include moves to phase out high-energy fluorescent light bulbs - such as strip lights commonly found in offices with a view to bringing the end to their sale from September 2023.

The UK began phasing out the sale of higher-energy halogen light bulbs back in 2018 under EU-wide rules. Now retailers will no longer be able to sell most remaining halogen bulbs, this includes kitchen spotlights that are of the halogen type. The legislation for the plans will be brought forward this month by the government to reduce our carbon emissions. The plan will help continue the shift to low-energy LED light bulbs, which account for about two-thirds of lights now sold by British retailers. It is expected to mean LEDs will account for 85% of all bulbs sold by 2030, officials said. Didi you know LED lights last five times longer than traditional halogen bulbs and produce the same amount of light, but use up to 80% less power. •

LED lights making dent in UK energy demand

Government to speed up UK climate change target

To help us choose the most efficient light bulbs, changes to the energy labels that consumers see on bulb packaging are being brought in, with the A+, A++ and A+++ ratings abandoned and efficiency graded between A-G, with only the most efficient bulbs given an A rating.

Cutting carbon emissions as a result of the new rules is the equivalent of removing approximately half a million cars from the UK's roads, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial strategy said in an online statement. It is part of a string of measures which it says will save consumers money and includes the right to get goods repaired, new energy labels and higher efficiency standards for white goods, TVs and other appliances. The Energy minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said online: "We're phasing out old inefficient halogen bulbs for good, so we can move more quickly to longer-lasting LED bulbs, meaning less waste and a brighter and cleaner future for the UK. "By helping ensure electrical appliances use less energy but perform just as well, we're saving households money on their bills and helping tackle climate change." The chief executive of Signify UK, which owns Philips lighting, said online: "Using energy-efficient LED equivalents for halogen and fluorescent lighting on an even broader scale will significantly help the UK on its journey to decarbonisation, as well as lowering the annual electricity bills for consumers." For higher wattage bulbs, consumers should be able to perform a straight switch to LEDs. But for lower wattage fittings, which use transformers, LED bulbs may not work and might require a new transformer to be fitted. 11

Food charity scaled operations by six times in 2020-2021 The publication of FareShare South West’s annual impact report revealed that they redistributed enough food for a staggering 6.1 million meals in just a 12 month period. Much of the uplift in operations was as a result of the charity’s emergency food provision at key crisis points in the pandemic year, including their FoodStock 2020 campaign which ran from November 2020 to March 2021 providing food at scale to frontline organisations, as well as ready-packed food parcels for smaller projects and initiatives.

Stepping up to deliver at this scale across the past year has not been without its challenges and has taken sleepless nights, hundreds of committed volunteers, a supportive community and staff team I am so proud of. From launching emergency warehouses in Ashton Gate football stadium and bed depots to overhauling entire processes and establishing new partnerships with frontline charities in need of our food, the effort has been monumental. More importantly, the impact has been monumental. We’ve worked with 416 frontline charities, schools and CEO of FareShare South West, Julian Mines, community groups and we estimate that our says: “The pandemic laid bare and exacerbat- redistribution has saved our partners ed the issue of food poverty that we face here £5million in average retail value, with over in the UK. This will rely on securing more partnerships with local food businesses who are looking for ways to deal with their surplus that are good for both people and planet. It will also mean further investment into our infrastructure, including new chiller vans, covering increased fuel costs and most exciting of all a new warehouse location in South Bristol.

Bristol Beacon premieres last ‘A New Song For Bristol’ track – Lloyd Coleman’s ‘When Music Says A Thousand Words’ Bristol Beacon has today (9 June) released a new track as part of its ‘A New Song For Bristol’ project – a new track by musician, composer Lloyd Coleman entitled ‘When Music Says A Thousand Words’. In Nov 2020 Bristol Beacon launched ‘A New Song For Bristol’, a city-wide project calling out to the Bristol public to submit their experiences of life in Bristol over the course of the last year, through words and music. As part of the project Bristol Beacon commissioned six Bristol-based artists to write original tracks, directly inspired or co-created with groups of Bristolians of all ages, developed through a number of special online workshops. ‘When Music Says A Thousand Words’ was written by Lloyd during the last lockdown and was created in collaboration with members of Bristol Youth Choir, and features the voices of young people talking about their experiences during the pandemic, following a Zoom workshop as part of A New Song For Bristol. Listen to the new track via Bristol Beacon’s YouTube channel. Just click the image above. 16

On making the track, Lloyd commented, “When I was asked to create something for A New Song for Bristol, I knew immediately I wanted to hear from young people and children living in Bristol. The pandemic has been challenging and continues to challenge so many of us – but in the heat of public debate I feel the voices of young people are often drowned out. To redress this, When Music Says a Thousand Words is a tiny snapshot into the brilliant minds of members of Bristol Youth Choir. I hope listeners are as inspired by the young people’s intelligence, wit and charm as I am. I only wish I had time to include more – there were so many brilliant contributions! Thinking back to February – our city and the UK as a whole was in the grips of one of the darkest months of the pandemic but listening to these young singers talk to me and each other gave me a real sense of hope when it was easy to feel despair.” 'When Music Says A Thousand Words’ is the fifth ‘A New Song For Bristol’ track out of seven to be released, sharing the work of the New Song For Bristol collective of artists and the groups they have been working with.

The tracks already released include ‘Trousers Optional’ by This Is The Kit, inspired by the creative submissions from members of the Bristol public received by Bristol Beacon in response to its call out; ‘Revolution’ by Kwazi, X4 and CVNCH created with songwriter and vocalist Javeon, followed by ‘Only For Now’ written by electronic artist and producer Kayla Painter in collaboration with FLOW Creative, Bristol Beacon’s accessible music-making club for young musicians, and last week ‘Boombox’ by KALA CHNG, inspired by members of the Filwood Community.

All submissions for ‘A New Song For Bristol’ are being collated into a living archive, which will be included in the heritage displays at the re-opened Bristol Beacon. To listen to all of the ‘A New Song For Bristol’ tracks, the public can visit the Bristol Beacon website by clicking the image above.

The remaining tracks are by Saffron Records artist Grove, who ran workshops with Bristol Beacon’s programme for children in care, Hope Creative; and songwriter Lady Nade has created music inspired by Bristol Beacon’s choir for Key Stage 1 children, Mini Singers. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Help Musicians, PRS Foundation Talent Development Partnership and Paul Hamlyn Foundation, ‘A New Song for Bristol’ is part of Bristol Beacon’s ongoing work to uncover and share the historic venue’s heritage and role within the city alongside its multi-millionpound transformation.

First terrace sold at the chocolate factory The first terrace of new homes built at The Chocolate Factory in Greenbank, Bristol has been sold with reservations now being taken on a second terrace that is due to be completed later this year. The seven new homes are the first of 140 being created at the former Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory, which lay derelict for 16 years before the regeneration to provide homes and workplaces for the local community. The sold-out terrace forms a new section of Co-Operation Road replacing a tall blank brick wall providing new homes for the vibrant, diverse and friendly community of Greenbank within BS5. Reservations are now being taken for Carsons Road, which is a mix of 3 and 4-bedroom houses with prices from £435,000. These houses benefit from off street parking with a charging point for an electric vehicle, a rare commodity in the area. Generator South West are behind the redevelopment, which provides shared ownership homes through Abri. It will create offices and shops around a central public square and new access to the Bristol & Bath Railway Path, which provides a 15-minute easy cycling commute into central Bristol. Mya Castillo, sales and marketing consultant to the project, commented: “The first phase has sold to timetable, despite issues thrown up by the pandemic, which has made it difficult for people to come to see the development. “We now have a show apartment and a show home for people to visit and an information centre that explains how the factory, which was once the very heart of the community, will once again be a vibrant and exciting part of the local scene after years of dereliction. “The homes we are offering at the moment are all new build but apartments will go on sale in the summer and three bedroom townhouses created from the original factory building will follow later in the year. We are keen for local independent businesses to take the commercial space and have a number of people that we are discussing the space with.” The Visitor Centre and Marketing Suite, created in the old management offices of the chocolate firm, is open Thursday – Monday.

New bistro, bakery and farm shop, The Bridge, opens at Charfield Gardens The Bridge, a new bistro, bakery and farm shop, has opened at Charfield Gardens, a new neighbourhood being created in Charfield near Wotton-under-Edge. Set up by local residents and husband and wife duo, Paul and Katie Nicholls, who have a strong background in hospitality and catering, The Bridge serves fresh bread, cakes and croissants daily, as well as offering a wide array of mostly organic groceries and other essentials from its farm shop. The bistro area offers breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8am to 8pm daily, with Sunday roast specials and afternoon tea also on the menu. Whether you're after a full English breakfast or an eggs benedict, fish and chips, a filet steak or a toasted sandwich, The Bridge will provide something for everyone. There will also be gluten-free and vegan options available. All the meat served in the bistro is organic and locally sourced. Barratt Homes' Charfield Gardens in South Gloucestershire will be made up of 115 two, three and four-bedroom homes, including 42 affordable homes, with substantial public open space and its own allotments and orchard. 26

Paul Nicholls, who owns The Bridge alongside his wife Katie Nicholls, said: "We are thrilled to be launching The Bridge at an exciting time for Charfield's growing community. We can't wait to welcome people to our friendly, welcoming bistro, bakery and farm shop, which offers something for all tastes. We have a brilliant team of chefs who will be cooking up a storm for the local community, as well as an excellent range of local suppliers who we'll be sourcing our produce from as much as possible." Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at Barratt Homes' Bristol division which covers the wider South West area, added: "A huge welcome to Paul, Katie and the team at The Bridge. We are delighted that this wonderful bistro, bakery and farm shop has opened at Charfield Gardens, bringing something special and unique to this new development and paving the way for the creation of a real sense of community. New residents of Charfield Gardens will be able to benefit from all the amazing local produce and culinary delights offered by The Bridge, on top of being surrounded by seven acres of open space and located just 3 miles from the charming market town of Wotton-under-Edge too."

Barratt Homes has donated £1,000 to the Wotton, Charfield and Kingswood Greenway Group which is working to create a new walking and cycling path connecting these local communities. A range of special ecological measures to support local wildlife are also being implemented at Charfield Gardens including a newt pond, bat boxes and bat tubes, swift and house sparrow boxes. Some of these wildlife homes are being attached to trees around the new community and others are integrated into the bricks of the new homes. As well as the new allotment and orchard, other shared outdoor facilities include a new play area and a trim trail connecting to local countryside walks. Barratt Homes is contributing over £885,000 in community benefits through section 106 contributions, as well as additional support for local organisations over and above the planning requirements, including £6,000 towards Charfield Village Hall.

£2k pick me up for Mini-Ambassadors community action programme A group of 13 young people from Bristol aged 5-10 years old are coming out of lockdown raring to go on community projects, thanks to funding of £2,000 from Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group, and support from Sovereign Housing Association. Despite the restrictions of COVID-19, the group of Mini-Ambassadors have kickstarted a number of social action projects, with ideas developed and delivered by the children and young people attending the group sessions.

The Clarion-designed ‘Mini Community Ambassador Programme’ - run by youth charity Young Bristol and delivered from a mobile youth club - was funded £5,000 by Sovereign Housing Association back in August 2020 and has recently been boosted by a further £2,000 by Clarion Futures to keep the project running until the end of July 2021.

Young Bristol also received £5,000 from Clarion Futures and the #iwill Fund (a joint investment between The National Lottery Community Fund and Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) back in September 2020 to The young people got out despite the rain last run a Community Ambassadors Programme week, to carry out litter picking in their local that supports young people aged 11-25. community in Whitchurch, picking up plenty of discarded facemasks along with other Matt Parsonage, Head of Communities at rubbish. Like Sovereign, we’re strongly committed to embedding youth social action in our communities and continuing to give young people a voice on issues affecting them. 28

“Our Mini-Ambassadors model shows that you are never too young to start your social action journey, with children as young as five making a difference in their community. We are excited to see the impact that the young people on Young Bristol’s Mini Community Ambassador programme make in their neighbourhood and beyond.” The #iwill Fund is a £50 million joint investment from The National Lottery Community Fund and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to support young people to access high quality social action opportunities. Clarion Futures is acting as a match funder and awarding grants on behalf of the #iwill Fund. National Lottery players raise £30 million a week for good causes. During 2020, The National Lottery Community Fund distributed over £650 million to community projects across the UK.

Daisy Mummery, Community Development Officer for Sovereign, said: “Seeing Young Bristol able to deliver another 10 sessions for young people, creating activities that bring them together from across the city really fits with our aims of building strong communities. The funding will also support day trips to local community spaces like the Nightingale Reserve in Brislington, providing the opportunity for young people to socialise, share their experiences of COVID-19, and explore nature learning how they as a group they can work to make a difference in the world.” Lucy Saunders, Development and Fundraising Manager at Young Bristol said: “The original funding from Sovereign Housing and now new additional funding from Clarion Futures towards the Mini Community Ambassadors Programme, will provide much needed face-to-face opportunities for young people following periods of national lockdown; allowing young people to once again take part in positive opportunities, which will not only support their development, but also make a difference in their local community.”

Specialist stroke unit could save 15 lives a year Southmead hospital is set become a centre of excellence for stroke patients which could save up to 15 lives a year, health chiefs have said. The plans for the Hospital were approved at a meeting on Tuesday and will go out to a 13-week public consultation.

“We estimate that in comparison with our current services the changes should save 15 lives a year, allow 60 to 70 people to live fully independently at home after their stroke and 60 to 70 people to avoid needing a new, permanent care-home placement.”

It is hoped the centre will prevent stroke victims being left disabled.

He added there was evidence that emergency care by specialists at a centralised stroke unit substantially reduced the risk of dying or being left disabled, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group heard patients would be rushed to the north Bristol site instead of their nearest hospital.

Kevin Haggerty, CCG North Somerset representative for Weston-super-Mare and Worle, said he would like to see “levelling-up” of services.

Phil Clatworthy, consultant stroke neurologist at North Bristol NHS Trust, said at present, the standard of care and treatment varied.

“Your audit showed that our outcomes are not as good as everyone else’s so we have the most to gain,” he added.

It would become a hyper-acute stroke unit with the region's stroke experts under one roof if given the go-ahead.

He said: “Unfortunately we know the care and treatment you receive after a stroke depends very much on where you live and what time of day it is, so the chances of surviving and maintaining your independence after a stroke will vary across the region. 30

Quay Street Diner Bristol

It’s not very often I have an entire weekend to myself. But last weekend I found myself in that very position. With nothing planned I decided to take a drive into Bristol to meet my sister for a catch up over a spot of lunch. After putting the world to rights over a coffee and spending a ridiculous amount of time people watching by the docks it was time to eat.

What also added to the atmosphere, and not in a good way, was the gaggle of drunken women who clearly had had way too much and were screeching mostly obscenities into the street! How their mothers must be proud? Anyway, we ordered our food.

This week’s movies previews In THE FATHER, Hopkins plays the eponymous role of a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). Yet, such help has become essential following Anne's decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne's father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

In Cruella academy award winner Emma Stone stars in Disney’s Cruella, an all-new live-actionfeature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness Von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

Hot Tubs Sales Soar fas Doubt is Cast Over Holidays Abroad

Hot Tubs Sales Soar for Leading Hot Tub Site as Doubt is Cast Over Holidays Abroad for Brits A trusted online used hot tub store is seeing sales steadily rise as summer approaches and holidays abroad seem increasingly unlikely. Popular site HotTubsForSale.co.uk is a trusted online store, offering customers the choice between both brand new and used hot tubs at competitive prices. With some of the most popular brands on the market available on the site including Arctic Spas, Lay-Z Spa and Calspas, it’s easy to see why those keen to invest in their outside space have been flocking to the site – with traffic up by an impressive 55% during this most recent lockdown. Though lockdown is set to ease across the UK, the likelihood of jetsetters making it abroad this year is still uncertain – perhaps the reason why many people are now choosing to invest in a hot tub for their garden. HotTubsForSale.co.uk offers a comprehensive range of tubs, and whether people are looking for an intimate two-seater perfect for romantic evenings in, or larger hot tubs to accommodate family and friends, ideal for when restrictions begin to lift, there is something on the site to suit every space and need.

Website Manager Andy Russell said: “We have been blown away by the recent interest in hot tubs on our site, but the uncertainty surrounding holidays again this year means that people are keen to create a holiday-style haven in their own gardens. “We source the very best hot tubs on the market, and our second-hand options offer up staggering cost-savings of up to 70% for our customers. Our second-hand tubs have seen the biggest increase in sales, perhaps because people are keen to go for the most cost-effective option, but that’s not to say that our brand-new hot tubs haven’t seen an increase in sales as well. In fact, sales are up 35% from this time last year, and we’re expecting that figure to rise even more as the weather continues to warm up. “Our team are all highly knowledgeable of the hot tub market and are on-hand for our customers who are perhaps buying a hot tub for the first time. We offer unparalleled advice and a thorough service, enabling those with no knowledge of hot tubs to feel secure in their decision to purchase one.” The team at HotTubsForSale.co.uk are also able to advise customers on all of the relevant safety standards and procedures that they will need to consider when purchasing a hot tub. Out and about in Brislington West with Jos and Andrew Brislington Greenway:

Totterdown Bridge Closure:

Since the local elections over a month ago, Jos and I have been trying to get an update on the Brislington Greenway. Despite repeated requests for a meeting with council officers, we have been unable to secure one. This is surprising as we have had no difficulty in securing meetings about other issues. We will continue to persist as we know this is a very important issue for Brislington West residents and we all have a right to know what is going on.

A reminder that Totterdown Bridge from the A4 Bath Road to Albert Road will be temporarily closed to all vehicles and pedestrians between 14 and 25 June. This is because of gas works in the area. Recommended alternative routes are as follows: Vehicles - north eastbound: A4 Bath Road, St. Philips Causeway, Albert Road south westbound: Albert Road, St. Philips Causeway, A4 Bath Road, Bath Bridge Roundabout, A4 Bath Road. Pedestrians - A4 Bath Road, Edward Road, Public Right of Way 409, Albert Road and vice versa.

Meeting our Beat Officers: We met with two of our local beat officers last week to discuss some issues residents have raised with us recently around speeding on Wick Road and Talbot Road. PCs Jonathan Gould and Graham Sharman reiterated the need for local residents to log any incidents with the police on 101 so they can build up a picture of problem areas and target their limited resources appropriately. We also spoke about the need for greater visibility and are hopeful that we can get a local police surgery once a month in the ward. We’ll keep you posted. 42

Ash Dieback: Council tree officers have informed us that an ash tree in St. Mary Redcliffe Cemetery opposite Arnos Vale Cemetery has succumbed to ash dieback and will need to be removed as it poses a risk to visitors. As this disease continues to take hold, we are likely to see further losses in the coming years. Tree officers have placed the location on the tree sponsorship page of the Bristol City Council website in case anyone would like to sponsor a replacement tree:

https://www.bristol.gov.uk/museums-parks-sports-culture/treebristol-planting-trees-in-bristol Reporting motorbike use in parks and green spaces: Over the last year, we have been working with other local councillors, police and council officers on the problem of motorbike scrambling in our parks and green spaces. This is against Bristol City Council’s bylaws as it can greatly endanger the public and damage the natural environment. If you spot motorcycles being ridden in parks and green spaces, you can report them to the police online: https://bit.ly/3wwJFGD. It is important to include any details like registration numbers if you have them. You should only take photos if it is safe to do so.

Evening chorus at Arnos Court Park: Thank you to Caroline and the Friends of Arnos Court Park for organising this lovely well-attended event last week. Our expert guide took us into the wooded area at the top of the park where we were able to identify the songs of 10 different songbirds. The Friends hope to organise more events like this in the future so check out the Facebook page for details in the tab below.

SUPPLY CHAIN CRISIS The ‘perfect storm’ of Brexit, Covid and the Suez blockage has left the British building industry in the midst of a supply chain crisis, but it could bring about long-overdue change, says industry specialist Dan Grimshaw.

“From being dependent on next-day-delivery options and doing things in bits and bobs, adapting to the new changes will ultimately make the sector more productive.

HOPE FOR RESTRICTIONS LIFTING A Bristol funeral directors has issued a plea to the Government to lift social distancing measures for funerals as of 21 June so that grieving families don’t have to choose between loved ones to invite. As things stand there are no limitations on the number of guests allowed at a funeral service in the UK. However, as social distancing rules are still in place, numbers are limited by the amount of people venues can hold while adhering to social distancing guidelines. According to the Government roadmap in June some social distancing measures may still be in place, meaning families will still be restricted on who is allowed to come and pay their respects.

MW Funeral Directors provide funeral directing services to families in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and further afield. As signatories of the ‘Fair Funerals Pledge’ the business is committed to providing outstanding funeral care that is accessible to all.

MW Funeral Directors in Westbury-on-Trym say that planning a funeral is already a highly emotional experience and the rules make the process even harder for grieving families.

With over 25 years in the funeral industry, the independent business has become renowned for its personal, bespoke and client-centred approach.

Funeral Director Ella Abbott, said: “The past 14 months have been really tough for the funeral industry and for the families we have helped during that time.

Ella continued: “It’s been extremely difficult for families during the pandemic and we are so looking forward to returning to business as usual. We have tried our best to make things as pleasant for our clients as possible by offering flexible virtual planning, live streaming services, and taking longer routes with the hearse so that people can stand on their doorsteps and see their loved one pass.

“We understand that social distancing measures should remain in place in some situations but we believe funerals to be a safe enough environment to be able to relax the rules and allow more people to mourn and celebrate the loss of a loved one. “Of course wearing masks would still be applicable but we would like to see venues able to safely hold more guests – especially when there will be a far higher volume of people allowed to attend bars, clubs and football stadiums when the rules change.” 46

“Attending a funeral and paying respects is a vital part of the grieving process for many so we hope that the Government will take this into account.” MW Funeral Director’s competitive prices start from £1,995 for a complete service including cremation costs.
