The 5 Most Traditional British Cakes

Over centuries, Brits have developed – and eaten – a cake for every occasion. Culture Trip takes a look at 5 of the classic cakes most adored across the United Kingdom.

Carrot cake

The first use of carrots as a sweetener for puddings is said to have come about in the 10th century, when resourceful Arabian chefs – short on expensive honey – would turn to the humble root vegetable to bring their desserts to life. Carrot cakes have persisted through the ages across the world, but came into prominence in the UK during World War II, where the necessity of rationing forced cake-hungry Brits to get creative with what they could grow. In the spirit of post-war abundance and abandon, the carrot cake was lifted from its gloomy appearance in the 1960s with the popularisation of cream cheese frosting – a decidedly American twist that took the classic carrot cake from earthy to decadent, and to the phenomenon we know today. 4

Victoria sponge Sometimes also referred to as a victoria sandwich, this legendary sponge cake ranks high on the list of every self-respecting cake lover in Britain. Named after Queen Victoria, the sponge came to prominence with the rise of afternoon tea in the 19th century, as bourgeois and aristocratic lunchers turned to delicate sandwiches and thick wedges of cake as something to chat over with one another. The victoria sponge is perhaps the most British of cakes – a timeless classic and a crowd-pleaser that never fails to delight.

Madeira cake

Named after the Portuguese island of Madeira and the cloyingly sweet dessert wine it produces, madeira cake was designed to be the perfect accompaniment for a tipple, but Britons – perhaps not wanting to drink dessert wine all the time – found a way to bring it into their everyday diet.

Recipes for madeira cake have been passed around since the 18th century, but its true popularity came with Eliza Acton – the godmother of English cookery – publishing her version in her legendary cookbook, Modern Cookery for Private Families (1845).

Sticky toffee pudding

Surprisingly, the sticky toffee pudding is not some overhang from Elizabethan Britain, but was instead invented by a Mr Francis Coulson of Sharrow Bay, a hotel in the Lake District, in the 1970s. This saccharine sponge, often strewn with sweet chopped dates and baked in golden syrup, is said to The oldest printed recipe of this have been inspired by a recipe for an quintessentially Scottish biscuit came in 1736 american muffin, and has become over a from Mrs McLintock’s Recipes for Cookery very short space of time one of Britain’s and Pastry-Work – one of Britain’s earliest most beloved desserts. Bristol Beacon presents Ukraine Benefit Event Bristol Beacon presents a one-off Benefit Event on Saturday 14 May, created by Bozarts Band, in support of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The event starts at 5pm and is free to attend but donations are encouraged. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Bozarts Band is a collective of Bristol’s leading musicians and instrumentalists, who will be joined for a uniquely immersive, three-part performance by actress Patrycja Kujawska (Kneehigh Theatre), soprano Katy Garden and special guest, pianist with Ukrainian roots, Veronika Shoot. Their programme will allow attendees to go on a journey around Bristol Beacon’s Foyer space, experiencing the happiness, sadness and hope that music evokes.

The programme will conclude with the audience joining the musicians to sing anthems of hope – Va, pensiero (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Verdi’s Nabucco and the Ukrainian national anthem.

The event will be totally immersive, and attendees will be able to roam the different spaces and levels of Bristol Beacon’s Foyer and be able to get close to those perfoming. The event will be a guided exploration through music and verse, inviting the audience to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and to form their own emotional response to conflict and the displacement of people around the world.

TWELVE HOURS OF MUSIC AT SODBURY FESTIVAL 2022 A 12-hour extravaganza featuring local musicians, bands and performers is promised at the Sodbury Fest taking place on Saturday July 2. The festival also promises beer, cider, gin and food to make the music go with a swing. The music starts at 11 am at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club in The Ridings, Chipping Sodbury and goes right through to 11 pm with original music and cover versions for all to enjoy. It is a one-day revival of the successful Chipping Sodbury Beer & Music Festival run for many years by the Rotary Club of Yate, who have now handed it over to the Rugby Club. Events could not be held in recent years due to Covid-19. Nick Cragg, of Country Property, who is the festival music co-ordinator and will be MC on the day, said: “From a local singer-songwriter performing her debut album through a steel band providing Caribbean influences to an evening of rock anthems it is promising to be a brilliant day with something for everyone. “It will be great to get everyone back together again at this local event after a few years when music events had to be cancelled. We are welcoming local food and drink producers and there will be a souvenir brochure of the event for people to buy.” 12

First on at 11 am will be 16-year-old Yasmine K-D and her musicians. Her brand of alternative pop indie and electronic music features on her debut album The Thread, which is scheduled for release in August. Her self-penned songs about life as a teenager in today’s world is a chance to catch a future star. At Noon local four-piece band Decanter, led by Alex Tyler will take to the stage followed at 1pm by Room 6, a female-fronted band entertaining with pop covers that you might find on your Spotify playlist. Covers band, The Peppercorns take to the stage at 2pm with their stripped-down acoustic versions of crowd pleasers from Rod Stewart, Oasis, The Killers, Oasis, Bon Jovi and many more. Guitarist Simon J Lucas and vocalist Paul Verstraeten are regular performers around Bristol and released their covers album “Under The Covers” in 2007. From 3pm there will be a carnival atmosphere with the 15-piece Bristol-based Community Steel Band and they make way at 4pm for the first set from Jazz Funk band Freeze. At 5pm the festival switches to dance with Street Cred, a local troupe that recently moved their rehearsals to Chipping Sodbury, before Freeze return to the stage for their second set.

From 7pm the FooPhonics bring the music of the Foo Fighters and Stereophonics to the festival. The band, who have 10 years of gigging under their belt, were previously known as Dockside. From 8pm For The Record, regular performers who know how to get a party started will perform covers from the 1970s to the present day and at 9.30pm Liquor & Poker will be rocking out with everyone’s favourites to complete the evening+. Tickets have gone on sale at www.ticketsource.co.uk/sodfest2022.

I’m a bit of a cafe aficionado, so after living here all my life years here, it’s about time I wrote a guide to the best cafes in Bristol.

5

So here’s my guide to the best independent Bristol coffee shops and cafes. Now there are so many great ones to choose from in Bristol, so even this top 5 doesn’t do the sheer amount of great indepedant coffee shops that is in this great city we live in.

Boston Tea Party

Boston Tea Party is a Bristol born and bred institution that now has cafes all across the city and west country. It has a big focus on sustainability and was one of the first UK cafes to stop using single use cups. It also has a great family-friendly menu with big breakfasts, burgers and cakes. The halloumi and sweetcorn fritters are a particular favourite. And they also have a great pick-and-mix kid’s breakfast menu.

Tin Can

Tin Can Coffee started as a festival truck and now has two shops in Bristol – one in Southville and the other on Gloucester Road. They have a cool aesthetic with nods to their trucking past. And they take their coffee seriously, serving their own house blend as well as single origin specials. The cakes and brunch are good too. 14

Best Cafes in Bristol

Small Street Espresso Small Street Espresso rightfully has a reputation for serving some of Bristol’s best coffee. They do local coffee as well as specialist varieties from across the world. And the cakes are also top notch. It’s the sister venue of Little Victories above.

Playground Cafe Playground Cafe is instantly memorable for its swing seats you can see from the window. As the name would suggest, it has a playful vibe throughout and there are over 150 boardgames to get involved with. They serve craft beer and cocktails as well as coffee. Chance and Counters is another good Bristol play café in the centre of town.

Mrs Potts Chocolate Shop There is no better place for a chocolate treat in the centre of Bristol than Mrs Potts Chocolate Shop. They serve the most amazing cookie sandwiches, brownies, cookies and cakes. And the hot chocolate is amazing. In the summer, the ice cream sandwiches are a must. It’s definitely one of the cutest cafes in Bristol.

In 2022, May is the only month with a Friday the 13th. There won’t be another Friday the 13th until January 2023. Many people consider Friday the 13th a harbinger of bad luck. Few unlucky superstitions are as well-known throughout Western culture as Friday the 13th. In fact, in addition to triskaidekaphobia, which is the fear of the number 13, Friday the 13th has its own phobia terms: paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia. But as with other phobias, it’s challenging to figure out exactly what sparked a fear of Friday the 13th. It’s likely a combination of factors. The fear may stem from the fact that both Friday and the number 13 have been considered unlucky in certain cultures throughout history. Put them both together and it’s the perfect storm. One theory involves Norse mythology’s favorite mischief-maker. Loki reportedly crashed a banquet in Valhalla, bringing the number of gods in attendance to 13. According to author Charles Panati, who wrote “Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things,” after being deceived by Loki, the blind god Hodr mistakenly shot his brother Balder, the god of light, goodness, and joy. This contributed to number 13 having negative connotations in Scandinavia. Strong numeric symbols centered around 13 are cemented in religious history as well. The Last Supper was attended by Jesus in addition to his 12 disciples. The thirteenth to arrive, Judas Iscariot, would go on to betray Christ. 16

Accordingly, History.com reports that the seating arrangement at the Last Supper is believed to have created the Christian superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen, specifically related to courting death. Friday also is said to be the day Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, the day Cain murdered Abel, and the day that Jesus was crucified. The stories around Friday the 13th have evolved through the years. On October 13, 1307, hundreds of Knights Templar, a powerful religious military order, were arrested by the King of France. Many of those arrested were later executed. In 1907, Thomas William Lawson published the novel “Friday, the Thirteenth” that told the story of a New York City stockbroker who plays on superstitions of the date to create Wall Street chaos, helping to solidify opinions about Friday the 13th. Other troubling events that have occurred on Friday the 13th include the German bombing of Buckingham Palace and the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The number 13 was not considered unlucky by everyone. In fact, in various Pagan cultures, 13 was associated with fertility and fortune. Individuals can make their own assumptions about Friday the 13th and enjoy it this May, which happens to be the only month this year the superstitious will have to contend with this spooky date on the calendar.

A South Gloucestershire estate agency is sponsoring an ABBA tribute night as part of its support for the local community. Country Property estate agency is backing the event which includes faithful choreography, spectacular and authentic costumes, stunning production and, most importantly, excellent musicianship. Andrew Simmonds of Country Property said: “We are very excited about supporting the ’ABBA Revival’, it is truly unlike any other Abba Tribute act out there and we can’t wait to see many local faces in attendance. 18

“The collective years of experience in all walks of the entertainment and music industries have enabled the band to create and finely tune quite simply the slickest concert stage show around.” This event will take place on the festival stage on the Pitch at Yate Town Football Club; on Friday the 27th of May, the gates open at 6 pm.

Foster Care Fortnight

At least 30 children are in need of foster carers in Bristol, and this is set to increase as more unaccompanied children flee war torn countries. As part of Foster Care Fortnight now to the 22nd May, Bristol City Council has renewed its appeal for people to consider joining the Fostering Community and finding out more about all the different types of foster caring. A child fostered through the council will prevent them from being placed outside of Bristol, away from everything that is familiar to them. At present, only half of the city’s children in care are living with Bristol City Council foster carers. The remainder are with carers from private providers, which often involves having to move the children out of Bristol away from their families, friends, school, and activities. This can be very traumatic and isolating for them. Mark Pennington-Field, foster carer for the council said: “We’ve been fostering for eight years, and our only regret is that we should have done it earlier instead of worrying we couldn’t do it because of work commitments. It’s such a rewarding role, and we would advise anyone considering fostering to contact Bristol City Council Fostering Team and have that initial discussion.” The theme for this year’s Foster Care Fortnight, Fostering Network’s annual campaign, is #FosteringCommunities, celebrating and shining a light on fostering communities and everything they do for children and young people in need. There is no typical type of foster carer – the Fostering Team is inclusive and welcomes everyone to find out more. There are also many different types of foster caring, including full time, part time and emergency. 22

Alex Taylor, who offers emergency and alternative foster care for the council, said: “If you are LGBTQ+ and thinking of fostering and are wondering if it might work for you, I would say from first-hand experience that the children I look after do not care about my identity - they're much more interested in how long they can game or what's for tea. I get some interesting questions though I must admit but having broad, open discussions with the children I look after about LGBTQ+ identities has helped create an environment where differences aren't just accepted but embraced and where the children feel safe to be themselves too.” Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Children's Services, Education and Equalities, said: “Bristol’s Fostering Community is special. To us, fostering a child isn’t just about placing them in your home and leaving you to it. It’s about supporting you and making sure that your commitment doesn’t get overlooked. “When you foster with Bristol City Council, you’ll not only receive dedicated support from an experienced team and regular contact with other foster carers, but also increased payments for each child you care for to thank you for your time and care.” The council has recently increased fees so all current and new foster carers will now receive payments of up to £458 per week for each child they care for.

Out and about in Brislington West with Jos and Andrew

Scrapped the Mayor!

Building on the green belt:

Thank you to everyone who voted in the Bristol Governance Referendum last Thursday. This referendum was made possible by a Bristol Liberal Democrat motion last year, which was supported by the other opposition parties. Bristol will now adopt a committee system of governance in May 2024 following the declaration of results in the referendum on how the city is run. There were 56,113 votes for a committee system and 38,439 votes to continue with an elected Mayor. The total turnout was 28.6%, around 5% more than the turnout that introduced the mayoral system ten years ago. Work will be carried out over the next two years to develop plans for the new arrangements. In fact, party group leaders are holding their first meeting today! We hope the discussions will be as transparent as possible and we want maximum public involvement in the process.

We were concerned to see the proposals from the developers, Bellway, to build up to 555 new housing units on green belt land in Brislington West. We will be hoping to set up a meeting with the developers as soon as possible to get more information about their plans. Since the land was acquired for development, the West of England Joint Spatial Plan, which originally earmarked this land as a site of possible future development, has been thrown out by central government as being ‘not fit for purpose’. We’ve also had the declaration of both a climate emergency and an ecological emergency, and an opposition motion at City Hall granting addi tional protection to green belt land.

Greenway work starts: It’s finally happening! After a long campaign, we were delighted to join volunteers working on the Brislington Greenway, a new active travel corridor for walkers, cyclists and local people to enjoy through the heart of Brislington West. Thank you very much to all the volunteers who gave up a sunny Saturday to help clear mountains of litter and debris from the route. We can’t wait to use it! 24

Furthermore, as we reported recently, the West of England Mayor, Dan Norris, has stated his commitment to protecting our green belt. We recognize the need to provide more homes but there are plenty of brown field sites in the city which should be prioritized. Council tax rebate: You will be aware that earlier this year the Chancellor announced the Council Tax Rebate Scheme in an attempt to help with the rising cost of energy bills. Eligible Bristol residents will begin receiving the £150 council tax rebate in the coming weeks.

The scheme provides a one-off payment of £150 to most households living in homes in council tax bands A to D. Since the announcement, Bristol City Council has worked to create a new system to ensure everyone eligible in the city receives their payment. Residents have also been warned about not falling foul to tax rebate telephone scams seen in other parts of the country. The council has confirmed it will not be telephoning people to ask for their bank details in relation to the rebate. Most residents who pay their council tax by direct debit will receive the money directly into their bank account by Monday 16 May and will receive a letter confirming details of this payment. An online form will be made available from Monday 23 May on the Bristol City Council website for non-direct debit payers to submit their bank details: https://news.bristol.gov.uk/ council-tax/council-tax-rebate There will be an option on the form for households to choose to have the £150 credited to their council tax account if they prefer. A service will also be made available to help those who are not able to access the online form. If anyone who pays by direct debit has not received their payment by Monday 16 May, they should also complete this online form. Bank details submitted on the form will only be used for the rebate and not future payments of council tax, unless the household requests this. Bristol has also been allocated a discretionary fund as part of the scheme to help residents considered to be most in need of support. This will support households living in Bristol in bands E to H who are in need or as well as those in bands A to D who are not eligible for the council tax rebate. Only one application can be made per household. Residents will need to apply using an online application form and will be asked to provide evidence, including council tax account number, photo ID and proof of address, to support the information provided in the application. Eligibility criteria will include that the person must be living within the Bristol City Council area as their main residence from Friday 1 April 2022 and they pay their energy costs directly to the energy supplier by bill or pre-payment meter, not as part of their rent. The process for the discretionary fund is being finalised and further information, including the full eligibility criteria and exclusions, will be provided on the Council website as soon as possible.

The council is conscious that some households may not feel they need the council tax rebate and will be offering a scheme that enables people to donate all or part of it to help support those who are most in need in the city. Some residents have already shown an interest in a scheme like this and if others would like to find out more, email: counciltaxforms@bristol.gov.uk. It will not affect the provision of the rebate but will enable them to make a direct donation to local crisis funding Summer Nature Day: On Sunday 12 June from 12 till 4pm, Callington Road Nature Reserve will be celebrating its 20th anniversary since the campaign to save the land that is now the reserve was started with the annual Summer Nature Day, where you can join in with fun, nature-inspired activities. There will be insect identification, pond dipping, nature trail and more. There will also be a working group doing some tidying up and litter picking. Come and meet some of those who led the campaign and hear about how they saved the land and wildlife that live there. All are welcome - especially children! Lift someone out of loneliness

Mental Health Awareness Week, run by the Mental Health Foundation, focuses on improving good mental health throughout the country. This year’s theme is exploring the impact of loneliness and how we can tackle it. The theme was picked following research by the Mental Health Foundation that found there has been an increase in people having feelings of loneliness. They want it to be addressed as a serious topic, requiring urgent action. The council are encouraging all in Somerset to ‘lift someone out of loneliness’ by reaching out to help someone who may be feeling lonely, which might in turn help them feel less lonely themselves. Feeling lonely is something that anyone can experience at any time and it can have a huge impact on a person’s wellbeing. Long-term loneliness is closely linked to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety Sometimes admitting to feeling lonely can be hard, but it is important to remember that many people experience feelings of loneliness too, and the feeling can pass. Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: We hope this year’s theme of loneliness will strike a chord with many of us who felt lonely and struggled throughout the Covid pandemic. Millions of us experience loneliness from time to time. We know that some people are at higher risk of experiencing loneliness and the evidence shows the longer we feel lonely, the more we are at risk of mental health problems. 26

Loneliness deserves more attention and we’re calling on everyone who has struggled as a result of being lonely to share their experiences. Some of the ways people can participate in Mental Health Awareness Week: Reach out to someone in your community who may be lonely and let them know they are not on their own. During Mental Health Awareness Week use the hashtag #IveBeenThere to share experiences of loneliness to support others and give the campaign momentum. Sign up to walk, run or jog as part of our 80 Miles in May challenge and share your photos using #80MilesinMay and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek. SIGN UP FOR BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT AT BRISTOL MEMORIAL WOODLANDS Anyone needing help in dealing with the death of a loved one is being encouraged to come forward and access support available at Bristol Memorial Woodlands.

“We are putting the finishing touches to planning now and are welcoming interested attendees to sign up to be the first to hear about the upcoming free activities.”

The latest programme of bereavement support at the woodlands is now being finalised and grieving loved ones can take up free informal or more formal support at the venue in Alveston, near Thornbury.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre cemetery offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials where trees and wild flowers are planted around plots to create a nature reserve for future generations. Also encompassing a chapel and reception rooms, the site, the land and grounds are all managed by a charitable trust and it provides families with a location for unhurried, bespoke funerals for loved ones.

Launching soon, the provision will include a regular bereavement group meeting weekly for around seven sessions and run by experienced professional counsellors, who are coming together as a team now. There will also be a new bereavement walking route at the picturesque site, aimed at providing a scenic and peaceful route around the meadows and glades and allowing time for reflection. Memorial walks will be organised monthly and supported by trained bereavement professionals and volunteers. The bereavement support will be run in partnership with Mireille Hayden of Gentle Dusk who is currently recruiting counsellors and developing the offering. Mireille said: “We are so excited to be launching more support services at Bristol Memorial Woodlands. “The provision, which will be open to anyone trying to adapt to loss and grief in the greater Bristol area, comes after reports of an increase in demand for services. “We really wanted to find a way to bring people together and provide much needed support for anyone going through a hard time. 30

Mireille continued: “We are hearing from professionals and charitable groups that demand for bereavement support is increasing but that there is not enough provision and often people aren’t reaching out for help. “We wanted to make our offering as accessible as possible so we’re planning some support sessions, which will be more structured and focussed as well as some informal walks which will be more of an opportunity for peer support. “Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a stunning venue and even just being out in nature, among people who know what you are going through, can be a welcome source of comfort.” For more information about the bereavement support services at Bristol Memorial Woodlands contact Sophie@gentledusk.org. uk For more information about the site visit www.memorialwoodlands.com

BUSINESS GROWTH Managing growth – multiplication does not have to mean dilution!

Mission Statement – pick one that you believe in, one that really resonates with you and plaster it everywhere, so that on the good days, the bad days and all the days in between, you will always remember why you began your journey. A good example of this is our Lettings Agency – KPA Property Management. We started this business because we could not find an Agency that did all the things that we wanted for our portfolio, which sweated the small stuff in the way in which we did – so our Mission Statement is “Lettings without Compromise!” This is not just descriptive for us but also a very bold statement to make, because it is hard to offer this kind of service at scale. However, it is important, as it not only stands as a daily reminder for us and a promise to our clients but, in standing by this avowal, throughout our business expansions, we are protecting our brand and ensuring that our service offering is still aligned with our core values – which is especially important to us!

Do not be afraid to say “NO.” There is no rule about how fast your progress must be, remember it is business by your design, not by anyone else’s. If something does not chime with your mission, even if this seems counter-intuitive to your short-term expansion, then just say “no” – follow both your gut and your eyes on this one.

Growth management in business is a huge topic and, some might say, a “business science” all of its own! In the years that I have been in business, I have driven and experienced both expansion and profitable consolidation and witnessed these two scenarios play out in other people’s businesses too. One such example which springs to mind, is of a business competitor, outside of the property sector. This competitor had a fabulous product, and some great ideas and energy, yet could not break their glass revenue ceiling, because they lacked the ability to manage the growth needed to drive their business forward. For this company, multiplication always equalled dilution of quality of service, and they found themselves in a loop of constant new business acquisition – because they had a huge hole in their client bucket! Take your eye off the ball and this can all too easily happen; here are six things that I have learned over the years, often the hard way!

32

Technology is amazing – embrace it! Collaborative tech tools will help you stay connected with your growing business and ensure that the reigns remain safely and firmly in your hands.

Learn to delegate – this was a very tough one for me personally! If you don’t, then there are only 24 hours in a day (fact) and you will be limiting your business growth (and your sanity). Have faith in your team and “get over yourself” – other people might actually be able to do some things better than you – no successful businessperson (not one) got where they are today by not learning how to delegate. Use technology to set goals and KPIs for your team and monitor, adjust and communicate them constantly – working “on the business” and not “in the business” frees you up to drive the business forward and moves you out of the role of employee, there will be little growth until this sea change happens.

Hire well. Take the time to find talented people who share your vision, are working in their excellence and capable of addressing your business’s needs. Then train them well, treat them well, communicate with them well and incentivise them. They are your greatest asset.

Build a balanced team. Don’t just hire on the basis of CV – look at the person behind the position and profile them well; if you do, they will be happy, they will bring something special to the team and they will stay; if you don’t, you run the risk of having an unhappy team and of getting stuck in a constant cycle of recruitment and training.

Striving for growth, without making concessions on your vision and your core values is hard – but it is not impossible to grow, at the same time as maintaining that all important customer care, that you hold dear, it just takes time, effort, belief and a willingness to learn! I can categorically state that twenty-five years on and I am still learning – and yes, often still the hard way; every day is a school day!

Together, we can share joy and love to the older people in our communities Confidence has become a problem as the impact of the pandemic continues. The fear of going out and connecting with their communities again is, affecting older people a great deal. This in turn, is affecting mobility and mental health issues caused by isolation and loneliness.

We, along with the rest of the country are having problems with recruiting which sadly, means we have a waiting list of clients waiting for our support. This in turn, exasperates the problem with engaging with the outside world as we regularly encourage outings and activities.

Organisations are struggling to recruit volunteers or encourage existing volunteers to return. This means that groups and activities that were tailored for older people are unable to run. It’s a vicious circle.

If you have a big smile that will make each clients face light up when they welcome you at the door, a good pair of ears and eyes to a lifetime’s worth of stories and help them find things if they’ve been replaced, we need you.

We were delighted when we were able to restart our Senior film club in Henleaze and Downend and we were encouraged by people attending. Although they were dubious, and we needed to reassure people that we were doing everything in our power to keep them safe from Covid. Our Monthly coffee afternoon has started to see more people attending and having the opportunity to meet new people.

We are a social group who love getting together and we are always there to support you, no matter what. Give us a call for a casual chat on: 0117 435 0063

Sadly, the pandemic and lockdown saw people living with Dementia and their loved ones, feeling abandoned. The importance of engagement in activities for people living with Dementia is crucial. We offer a free Dementia Information workshop to groups and organisations with the aim of making Bristol a Dementia friendly city. 38

If you would like to find out more about our film club, coffee afternoon or Dementia workshops, contact: lisa.dicker@homeinstead.co.uk Please share any events or groups with us that would be of interest to older people. We can add them to our Community Newsletter. Together, we can share joy and love to the older people in our communities.

BMX Olympian to Open New Cycling Facility in Stockwood, Bristol Olympic Freestyle BMX bronze medallist and Access Sport ambassador, Declan Brooks, will join Access Sport to open an exciting new cycling facility in Stockwood, Bristol on Thursday 12th May.

Stockwood Bike Track will become a thriving resource for the local community, creating a safe and exciting place for people to learn to ride, increase cycling confidence and enhance bike handling skills.

The new facility has been delivered as part of the UK charity Access Sport’s Making Trax Cycling Inclusion Programme, which aims to give every young person access to a bike, the skills and confidence to use it, and somewhere local, safe and exciting to enjoy riding. The work was carried out by specialist track builders Architrail Velosolutions, with capital funding from The London Marathon Charitable Trust, Enovert Community Trust, Bristol City Council, Churngold and the John James Bristol Foundation.

Declan Brooks, Access Sport ambassador and Olympic Freestyle BMX bronze medallist says: “The Stockwood Bike Track is an amazing facility for the local community. It’s great to see a track designed for all ages and abilities and I hope it will encourage more people to get on their bikes and give it a go! Every community needs a fun and safe space like this!”

The new facility will offer a range of riding options for all ages and abilities, as well as being accessible for bikes, scooters and skateboards. The open access facility is also accompanied by a new footpath connecting the track to nearby Whittock Road, a storage unit to provide a safe place to store community bikes and helmets, and a social space to watch the action on the track. 44

Joe McTague, Delivery Director at Access Sport said “We are delighted that Stockwood Bike Track is now complete and we look forward to the official opening in May. It is brilliant to see people already out enjoying the new track and we know it will be a great asset for the local community! We would like to thank our partners The London Marathon Charitable Trust, Enovert Community Trust, Bristol City Council, Churngold, the John James Bristol Foundation and Architrail Velosolutions, for helping create this fantastic facility for the community of Stockwood.”

Access Sport will now support the local community to set up a cycling group to provide a wide range of opportunities for local people to get involved, whether through riding, coaching or volunteering. There will also be recreational and structured cycling sessions offered at the track, which will include coached sessions, rock up and ride sessions, after school sessions, Wingz cycling (inclusive cycling for anyone with an impairment and/or additional need), BMXercise (BMX specifically for women and girls) and Access Sport’s unique school and community outreach programme.

We have worked hard to secure this facility and, as one of only four in the city, it will benefit children, young people and families in all parts of the Ward. To see such a large investment in our community is wonderful news and we hope many young people and families will get as much pleasure from using this facility as we have from delivering it. We must express our gratitude to Access Sport – without their involvement we would not be here today.”

Significant funding from local philanthropy organisations the Hargreaves Foundation, Foundation for Children and The Yogscast Jingle Jam will enable the activation of the facility and support ongoing delivery costs. Councillor Graham Morris, Stockwood Ward said “Councillors Jonathan Hucker and Graham Morris are delighted to see the new bike track in Stockwood.

British Curry Day raises £2,500 for local good causes Curry houses in Bristol have raised £2,500 for good causes – thanks to a national event celebrating the forefathers who introduced millions of Britons to a taste of the subcontinent.

The hub works across the communities of Lawrence Weston, Shirehampton and Avonmouth in North West Bristol to reconnect people to each other and to the services they need.

British Curry Day was launched to mark those who came to Britain from the 1960s opening restaurants and takeaways – and to show support for the industry today.

Amy Boucher from ConfiDANCE said: “The dancers are very excited to buy some new costumes and props to help enhance their dance shows.

Businesses taking part donated £1 to good causes for every Tikka Masala sold on the day.

“A huge thank you to Naseem and all involved through the British Curry Club in their fundraising efforts.”

Community champion Naseem Talukdar, from Fishponds, whose own parents ran a restaurant, said: “It’s great so many people were keen to get involved.

Dr John Manley of AskingBristol added: “Working with AskingBristol’s ambition to democratise asking and giving across Greater Bristol, the funds raised were divided among five brilliant community groups providing physical activities for young people.”

“It was an opportunity to both commemorate past generations and support our community.” Charities and community contributions The money was given to AskingBristol, which connects charities with individuals, organisations and businesses that can support them. It then gave £500 each to the five following organisations: Barton Hill Amateur Boxing Club; ConfiDANCE, which provides free dance sessions to children and young people in Shirehampton and Avonmouth; Street Space, a youth and community work organisation is based in Knowle; St Aldhelm’s Juniors Youth U12 Girls football team and Oasis Community Hub North Bristol. 46

Challenges Curry houses continue to face challenges following the outbreak of Covid-19. Enam Ali, publisher of Spice Business magazine and event founder, has spoken of ‘losing many of the country’s first curry restaurateurs’ to the pandemic. UK Curry Connect (UKCC) is a campaign group which has been set up to raise awareness of skills shortages in the Asian catering industry.

Naseem is UKCC director for social responsibility and sustainability, as well as founder of Projects Against Plastic (PAP) charity - looking at ways to reduce single-plastic use in the catering industry. He added: “British curry has been a key culinary and cultural contribution made by migrants from the Indian subcontinent. “The industry continues to change and adapt, including finding ways to support its community and be more environmentally friendly.” British Curry Day coincided with 50 years of independence for Bangladesh, which was a national holiday in the country on December 16. Local business coach searching for charity partner With an estimated 90% of UK charities facing a negative impact due to the pandemic1, a local business coaching firm is offering its support. Geraint Thomas, from the award-winning ActionCOACH Bristol, is looking for a local charitable organisation for their gifted coaching programme. “It has been a tough period with many charities having really struggled to survive as typical fundraising activities were impacted by the pandemic. There are 1,409 registered charities in Bristol2 alone, and we want to support the amazing work they do by gifting our expertise. This is why I’m calling for local charities to get in touch. Our coaching will help you to become more effective in operating your charity as a business. From financial management, marketing, operational processes and bringing the people in your teams together, we can support you in your development,” said Geraint. ActionCOACH Bristol was launched in 2015 with a mission to ensure that every business owner in Bristol leads a happy and successful life through their business. During the pandemic the award-winning coaching firm gifted over 150 hours of coaching sessions to support businesses in the area. Throughout that time, they also gifted their support to the award-winning social enterprise Community of Purpose.

48

With ActionCOACH Bristol’s support they are on track to supply 1,000 school meals to school children, collaborate with over 40 local schools on an inclusive sporting initiative and reach even more young Bristolians at their annual awards in 2022. “We’re looking for someone who wants to take their charity to the next level. We don’t only want to support someone in making back what they have lost, we want to help them exceed their previous fundraising efforts. If you’re willing to implement the lessons from our coaching, we know it will make a huge difference to you, your team and your charity. Get in touch if you’d like to be considered as part of our gifted coaching programme. We can make it a partnership to remember - for all the right reasons!” If you run a charity based in Bristol or the surrounding area and wish to find out more, please contact Geraint before 30th June on 07962 237744 or email: geraintthomas@ actioncoach.com 1.
