Welcome to this week’s edition!
Let’s start things off with some good news for a change. It looks like 2022 we have a 4-day weekend coming thanks to The Queen celebrating her platinum Jubilee and It looks like it’s going to be a whole 4 days of celebration too at the tax payers expense. Did I here correctly on the news that today (Thursday 12th Nov) That the Chancellor Mr. Rishi Sunak was considering raising the taxes to offset the deficit from Coronavirus as well as £14bn could be raised by increasing capital gains, tax rates to bring them in line with income tax. However, he did state that new lockdown rules will expire on 2nd December ‘as a matter of law. I wonder if he will reinstate the eat out to help out scheme again to boost the hospitality industry, or just rely on the December rush to celebrate the festive season. I am not sure the current circuit breaker or lockdown will be able to reduce the R number enough. Fingers crossed the new miracle vaccine is as good as they say it is at striking down the virus.

Out and About in Brislington West with Jos and Andrew
Local Champions Restore Neglected War Memorial The Liberal Democrats are often called the ‘Party of Local Government’. Indeed, across the West of England there are more Liberal Democrat councillors than anyone else. Voters clearly recognise Liberal Democrats as hardworking, community representatives, and appreciate the fact that they aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.
However, the monument had been looking rather forlorn in recent years and was in desperate need of some care and attention. Liberal Democrat local councillor for Brislington West, Jos Clark, said, ‘Lots of weeds were growing through cracks in the pavement, the metal railings surrounding the monument were badly corroded, a large amount of litter had become trapped in the undergrowth behind the railings and there A great example of Liberal Democrats in were several overhanging branches rubbing action is the work by the Brislington Liberal against the top of the cross, which could have Democrats to restore the long-neglected potentially caused damage’. Local resident local war memorial. As people hurtle along and Liberal Democrat candidate for the busy A4 Bath Road in and out of town, Brislington West, Andrew Varney, agreed they would be forgiven for failing to notice the adding, ‘Every year, Jamie Park, the landlord Brislington War Memorial. Situated next to the of the adjacent Lodekka pub, did an annual Lodekka Public House and opposite the tidy-up prior to Remembrance Sunday. Over the course of several Saturdays, the whole site was cleaned from top to bottom, including scrubbing the cross clean of decades of grime from the passing traffic, power-washing the paved area surrounding the cross, picking up the litter, doing some weeding, cutting back the undergrowth and overhanging branches, and rubbing down and repainting the railings. Jamie said, ‘I’m really grateful for Jos and Andrew getting involved and helping to transform our local war memorial. It’s now a fitting tribute to our fallen heroes’. In the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday, Jos and Andrew, together with Liberal Democrat councillor for Brislington East, Tony Carey, decorated the newly-painted railings with hundreds of knitted poppies donated from local residents and churches in the Brislington area. It has really brightened up the area and makes an impressive sight. On Remembrance Sunday itself, Jos, Tony and Andrew were given permission to organise a small, socially-distanced Service of Remembrance. Two ministers from local churches officiated, members of the armed forces attended and there was even a bugler to play the Last Post.
Andrew said, ‘Due to the current situation, the council decided not to hold an event at the Bristol Cenotaph this year, so it was great that we were able to hold our own small gathering here in Brislington so local people could pay their respects’. Leading house builder steps in to help protect Thornbury Town FC A leading house builder has stepped in to help protect and develop Thornbury Town Football Club, which has faced a significant loss of income due to the Covid pandemic and is forced to put training sessions on hold once more. Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, which are delivering hundreds of much-needed new homes at nearby Park Farm in Thornbury, have donated ÂŁ500 to the volunteer-run club's recent crowdfunding campaign to help cover running costs and to set up a new, dedicated programme called Wildcats for girls aged 6 - 11 at the local sports centre once children's outdoor sports activities can resume. Thornbury Town FC runs 18 teams for adults and children in Thornbury and South Gloucestershire, including 4 adult teams and junior teams for girls and boys from 6yrs to under 18s. Since March, the football club has seen its income drop to close to zero due to the loss of all matchday revenue, gate money and bar takings and the cancellation of several major fundraising events.
6
Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes have made the donation as part of their long-standing commitment to supporting local communities where they are building new homes and facilities. Park Farm is a new development in Thornbury made up of a range of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes. Once complete, there will be a primary school, nursery, health centre and local shops as well as 32 acres of open space and sports pitches. With the club's first ÂŁ10,000 target to help cover running costs recently reached, this additional donation from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes will help the club to take forward other ambitious improvement plans including acquiring a new 50 seater stand and extending the clubhouse which is required for Thornbury Town FC to be accepted for promotion to the next level. These renovations will increase capacity for spectators, which will be particularly important to allow social distancing, and improve the matchday experience for all players and spectators now that the club has been able to restart training sessions.
Graham Smith, from Thornbury Town FC said:
Louise Ware, sales director at David Wilson Homes added:
"We are very grateful to Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes for their generous donation to the club. The impact of the pandemic meant we were set to struggle to cover running costs for the club, let alone begin the important renovations we had planned and our new programmes. We are looking forward to welcoming spectators back to Mundy Playing Fields matches after this next lockdown, and with social distancing, so we are keen to get to work on improving out spectator facilities and the clubhouse - which is crucial to meeting the Ground Grading terms for promotion."
"Sports clubs like Thornbury FC are a hugely important part of the fabric of a community, which we are committed to supporting and developing where we are building much-needed new homes. Park Farm offers a broad range of new homes to suit all requirements and we're delighted to be able to support and protect the fantastic football club on its doorstep."
Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at Barratt Homes Bristol commented: "At Barratt we are passionate about supporting our local communities. Having supported Thornbury Town FC before, we know how hard they work to bring football to as many people as possible, and it's exciting to hear about their new programme for girls. When we saw just how much the Covid pandemic had affected the club we were happy to help."
Barratt Bristol and David Wilson Homes' community fund donates ÂŁ1,000 a month to local causes in the communities where it is building homes. Support earlier this summer included donations to local foodbanks which have experienced unprecedented demand due to lockdown and the Covid pandemic. New breath test could detect virus in seconds Early trials of a new test for covid-19 open up the possibility of rapid identificatio for the disease in just seconds rather than hours. Research shows breath analysis developed in Wales may be able to distinguish Covid-19 from other chest infections almost instantly
But as coronavirus became a global pandemic, the firm took the decision to focus its diagnostic efforts on the emerging disease. “We do have experience in that area, and experience in its implementation. When Covid came along, it made us divert in that direction and to contribute to the effort, added the Imspex chief.

Researchers tried to pinpoint whether the "You could see the potential in aviation, you machines could tell the difference between a could see it in transportation in general, you patient with Covid-19 or another type of chest could see it in immigration. infection. "You could take a quick sample, it's non-invasive, you don't need a particularly specialised person to collect those samples - and a few minutes later you get a result." These machines were developed by Imspex at its headquarters in the Cynon Valley in south Wales. Originally, the technology was being used to develop tests to detect illnesses such as lung cancer, and how to distinguish between bacterial and viral respiratory diseases quickly.
8
The equipment is analysing single breath samples, looking for volatile chemicals present in the expelled air that might give scientists a clue to why a patient was sick and had respiratory issues. The tests were able to make out a signature for Covid in the chemicals and then confirmed by more traditional, and invasive, swab tests. In approximately 80% of cases, they were able to accurately predict if the patient had Covid-19 - distinguishing the illness from other breathing problems such as asthma or bacterial pneumonia. In the Edinburgh study, the researchers also identified chemical compounds that had a significant predictive power for the severity of the Covid infection, and whether it may cause a fatality.
Scientists concluded: “If shown to be reliable, it offers the possibility for rapid identification or exclusion of Covid-19 in emergency departments or primary care that will improve management of patients and safety of healthcare staff.”
"We are a small company, if we had to do this ourselves with the current resources we have, we are 12 to 18 months from getting a solution," said Santi Dominguez. "But we could probably get to market in under six months with the right support."
They added: “Development and validation of this approach may allow rapid diagnosis of He said finding that support to take the next Covid-19 in the coming endemic flu seasons.” steps was now the company's priority. A spokesman from Loughborough’s department of chemistry, said he was “hugely encouraged” by the results. However, these remain small scale studies, with about 100 patients involved. The company behind the equipment said it still needed to refine the technology before it was ready to be used in everyday situations, whether in hospitals or other environments such as airports.
"We have already had some support from the Welsh Government in the past. That has been very helpful in getting us to where we are," he said. "But we are at the point now where we really need to change gear, if you like. "It is one thing to get the technology to the point where it is approved and it can be used, but then you have to be able to make it in sufficient numbers - it's no good if you can only make a few."

Silence is golden: But It also has its health benefits While some people dislike a silent environment, equating it with being alone and lonely, others look forward to spending time with just their thoughts, seeking silence with eagerness, as if anticipating a gift. Indeed, silence offers profound benefits, many of which we aren’t even aware of. Silence is good for overall physical health and well-being Besides giving our ears a break, silence has been shown to offer significant health advantages that boost overall well-being.
Silence promotes psychological and emotional benefits Taking a break from difficulties at home, work or school is often best accomplished with a conscious choice to entertain silence. Without the distractions of tech devices, ringing phones, incoming messages, unexpected assignments or chores, or the demands of children, co-workers, family members and friends, it’s easier to calm the mind and restore balance. Silence may help in the following areas:
From a physiological standpoint, silence helps:
Creativity – When allowing thoughts to go where they will, inspiration may bubble up. Solutions to current or long-standing Lower blood pressure, which can help prevent problems may suddenly occur to you, or a heart attack. Boost the body’s immune work-around or innovative approach may system. Benefit brain chemistry by growing seem more feasible. Ideas for going in a new cells. A 2013 study found that two hours different direction could coalesce, helping of silence could create new cells in the build momentum and excitement for spinning hippocampus region, a brain area linked to them off into yet other potential avenues to learning, remembering, and emotions. pursue. Awareness of self and environment – Once you’re comfortable in your silence, you’ll notice a distinct shift in your ability to be more self-aware. In addition, you can better appreciate the world around you, including your immediate environment.
Decrease stress by lowering blood cortisol levels and adrenaline. Furthermore, according to a 2006 study in Heart, two minutes of silence relieves tension in the body and brain and is more relaxing than listening to music. This was attributed to changes in blood pressure and blood circulation in the brain. Promote good hormone regulation and the interaction of bodily hormone-relate systems. Prevent plaque formation in arteries. Lending credence to these observations, science now recognizes the harmful effects of noise pollution on human health and cognition. 10
Reflection – Silence permits the kind of reflection that is beyond mere introspection. It promotes the ability to connect threads in a seemingly disorganized, disconnected world. After meditating in silence, you may be more motivated to mend significant relationships that have become strained, embark upon a self-improvement program, pursue a more challenging career path, vow to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Sensitivity to flow of life force – As a living organism, becoming aware of your essence, your flow of life force is important to maximizing your potential and impact on those closest to you. No one exists in a vacuum. We’re all members of the human species. As such, our life force separates us from all other species. Insomnia – In a 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, older adults experiencing insomnia found relief in the form of improved sleep quality and less daytime impairment after undergoing a 6-week intervention of mindfulness meditation. Suggestions for entertaining silence
Remain in bed an extra 5 minutes before getting up for the day. Use this time to slowly awaken to the world, basking in the silence of the sleeping quarters, letting your thoughts wash over you. Say a silent prayer of gratitude for all that you have and ask for blessings for the day ahead.
At a loss for effortless ways to get in the practice of entertaining silence? It isn’t as difficult Engage in deep breathing exercises. This as you might think, and anyone can begin to helps calm your mind and quiet it at the same cultivate silence to help benefit overall health time. and well-being. Try these suggestions: Meditate. Online players have contributed to Covid-19 research EVE Online's community is vast, globe-spanning, and pretty hardcore about their favorite game. However, in 2020, their passion has been turned toward considerably more productive goals. In partnership with scientists from McGill University, over 171,000 EVE players have contributed to Covid-19 research. If you're wondering how playing a game could possibly have any discernible impact on the fight against Covid-19, let us elaborate. By completing special in-game tasks and mini games, players can categorize cells and help researchers better understand the virus and how it attacks the human immune system. You don't need any specialized knowledge or a scientific background; the in-game tutorial explains everything you need to know. Contributing to the effort does lead to various in-game rewards, as well as a higher "Project Discovery" ranking. So far, the 171,000 gamers mentioned before have completed more than 47 million tasks, equating to about 36 years of categorizing cells. Those are some astounding results, and it goes to show that gamers are willing to band together for the common good when given the opportunity to do so. 12
According to the BBC, which first reported on this news, many players were happy to participate because the minigames gave them a way to better understand scientific research without needing any specialized knowledge.
Furthermore, they were able to help out from the comfort of their own home, so any difficulties that volunteering in-person may have caused did not factor in here. For our part, we're happy to see the gaming community contribute to such an important cause, and we're even more pleased that those contributions have proven useful. For more information on Project Discovery (created by EVE's developers, CCP Games), including participation details, check out the official page here.

COVID marshals began work Thank you for your efforts during the first six days of our second national lockdown. We’ve all got to do our best to follow the guidance in order to get Bristol's COVID-19 figures down. The spread is real and rising - Bristol's rate is 422.3 new cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days (up to the 5 November). This represents 1,957 positive cases reported for Bristol over the past seven days (up until 5 November) from 14,103 community tests. Our figures remain above the England average of 245.1 per 100,000. Our new COVID marshals began work last Friday. They are here to help us safe, keep areas COVID-secure and remind people of the rules. During lockdown we will continue engaging with communities and the public, helping to explain the rules, and taking on local contact tracing.
16
I'm pleased to say that a new drive-through testing unit has opened at Brislington Park and Ride. Testing at the site will run on a strictly appointment-only basis. Current Government guidance is that only those with symptoms should have a test, which you can book at nhs.uk/coronavirus, or by calling 119. Finally, I welcome the Government's U-turn on the campaign for free school meals for those children who receive them to continue this Christmas and over the Easter, summer and Christmas period during 2021. Bristol had already made a commitment that our most vulnerable children would be fed, and I am pleased that we will now have the support committed so we can build on our partnerships to continue to deliver for our children. A big thank you again and please stay safe. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol

GENERATION RENT TO BECOME GENERATION BUY
Most of us at some point had (or have) ambitions of owning are own home. It’s common knowledge that today first time buyers are finding it increasingly difficult to get onto the property ladder. This is arguably caused by several reasons, but most significantly due to the increasing gap between the average salary compared to the average house price. According to ‘ ThisIsMoney.co.uk’ over the space of a decade the average house price went up by £100,000 whereas the average salary only went up by £6,400. Taking into consideration that lenders will calculate your borrowing by around 4.5 x annual salary, this leaves a borrowing short fall of £71,200. With this in mind, Boris Johnson’s announcement last month has caused a combination of excitement and speculation around what help first time buyers are to expect in the future. Boris stated he wants to turn generation rent into generation buy. He has given us little more than this slogan to go on however, what we do know is that the existing ‘Help to Buy’ (HTB) scheme is due to come to an end. 18
There are some significant changes between now and March 2021 to bare in mind if you or someone you know is looking to utilise the scheme before it ends.
From March 2021 the HTB Scheme will only be available to first time buyers, this means those interested in HTB and are not first-time buyers will need to have their ‘Property Information Form’ submitted by the 15th December 2020. A new scheme will be available from April 2021 Those looking to use the new scheme must complete a new HTB application form to be eligible for the new HTB scheme the purchase price must be under £349,000 (for the South West of England). Ultra-processed foods are they good for you?
Some ultra-processed foods that may be beneficial to health:
Wholegrain breakfast cereals with no added Heavily processed convenience foods are sugar “are fortified with vitamins and minerals things we love to hate and hate to love. But such as B vitamins, calcium and iron, helping are some ultra-processed foods actually good you reach your recommended daily intake, and for us? are a source of fibre, which can contribute to More than 50 percent of our energy intake in cardiovascular health, normal bowel function, gut health and regulation of blood glucose the UK comes from ultra-processed foods, levels. according to a study reported in the British Medical Journal. These foods include industrially produced cereals, sauces, baked goods and ready-meals. They can be packed with hidden sugars, salt and fat. Eating them regularly is associated with obesity and even ‘early death’. But are ultra-processed foods ever healthy? What are ultra-processed foods? Most foods are processed in some way, for example to enable preservation”, says Huntriss, “but the term ‘ultra-processed’ refers to foods that often have a long ingredients list, with [some] you wouldn’t be familiar with. Food-based ingredients are often combined with sweeteners, colourings, stabilisers and preservatives and go through multiple processes to formulate the end-products. Examples include ice cream, fizzy drinks, hot dogs and some oven chips.
Foods like these, along with crisps, biscuits and cakes, aren’t what anyone would class as healthy, but other ultra-processed foods can be harder to judge. You might wonder if a jar of pesto, a tin of soup, or a veggie lasagne ready-meal, for instance, are healthy. Let’s take a look. Ultra-processed foods with benefits As with other types of food, everything in moderation is key. Inclusion of some of these foods as part of an otherwise healthy and balanced diet is acceptable. We live in a fast-paced world, and as much as an entirely whole-food, unprocessed diet would be great, it simply is not realistic for the majority of people 20
Tinned baked beans – Made with white beans such as haricot or cannellini beans, these are high in vegetable protein and fibre, and low in fat, and count towards your five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. They also contain minerals such as iron, zinc and B vitamins. They contain some added salt, but versions with no added sugar are available.” Pre-packaged wholegrain sliced bread – “Wholegrains are packed with nutrients, including fibre, protein, B vitamins, antioxidants, calcium and iron. A diet rich in wholegrains has been shown to reduce the risk of many chronic health conditions, and helps us reach our target of 30g of fibre a day. Unsweetened soy or plant-based drinks can be ultra-processed. If choosing versions fortified with vitamins and minerals, these drinks may provide a similar amount of calcium to cow’s milk, promoting bone health. Fortified plant-based drinks can also contain B vitamins, iodine and Vitamin D. What should you look for on the label? Some ultra processed foods are energy-dense, high in added sugar, salt and saturated fats, contain little dietary fibre and have lost nutritional value through the multiple processes they have experienced
A diet high in ultra-processed foods is not recommended, Research has demonstrated a direct association between intake of ultra-processed foods and prevalence of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Is everything else ‘junk’ food? So, apart from those four foods, is everything else off the cards entirely? Not exactly. “Eating ultra-processed foods on occasion is not likely to cause any risk to health”, says Huntriss. “Cakes, biscuits and crisps are foods that many people enjoy as part of their diet. Having a healthy diet is all about balance.” Making ultra-processed foods an occasional stop-gap rather than an everyday part of your diet is an easy rule of thumb. Although high-fat, high-sugar foods should not be consumed frequently, they can still be included, albeit less frequently, as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet.”
That said, Huntriss would like to see “less intensive marketing in supermarkets of ‘unhealthy’ high-fat, high-sugar and high-salt foods”, with more whole foods centre stage. “The marketing, convenience and low cost of these foods allows them to often take the place of more nutritious options and home cooking, leading to detrimental effects on our health.” To keep you healthy, a diet based on: Wholegrains Fruit and vegetables Nuts and seeds Lean protein More unsaturated fats (from plant sources and oily fish) than saturated fats (mainly animal sources) Dairy or a calcium-fortified dairy alternative Limited salt intake Stay hydrated!

Four-day weekend planned to celebrate Queen's Platinum Jubilee It is still a couple of years away but already plans are being made for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
"It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty's reign."
The May Bank Holiday Weekend in 2022 will be moved to Thursday 2 June, with another bank holiday on Friday 3 June to mark Her Majesty's 70th year as monarch.
Organisers say the four-day celebrations will feature events that mix British ceremonial pageantry with cutting edge artistic and technological displays.
It will be the first time ever any British sovereign has reached the historic milestone.
To make sure the whole country and Commonwealth feel involved, it has been promised that "spectacular moments in London and other major cities will be complemented by events in communities across the UK and the Commonwealth, allowing people to join together in celebration and thanks at a national and local level".
Events will be held across the four-day weekend to reflect on the Queen's reign, and her impact on the UK and the world since 1952. The commemorations are being arranged jointly by The Royal Household and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden said online: "Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment - and one that deserves a celebration to remember.
Also a Platinum Jubilee medal will be produced for people who work in public service, including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison service.
The tradition stretches back to the reign of Queen Victoria when an official medal was "We can all look forward to a special, four-day designed to mark her 50th anniversary on the Jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spec- throne. tacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

DEATH CAFÉ RETURNS DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND A workshop designed to support people to open up about issues around death and dying is being held in Bristol on November 28. The virtual Death Café, organised by funeral venue Bristol Memorial Woodlands, has been arranged after a similar event – held as part of Bristol’s Good Grief Festival in October – was a sell-out success. The workshop will be run by health psychologist and bereavement expert Mireille Hayden who says the over-subscribed October event demonstrates the need for people to talk about these issues. “The last Death Café we ran was our most popular yet with 68 people booked on and many more on a waiting list. The interest in the event prompted us to hold another closely after as it is clear that there is a desire to talk,” said Mireille, who has 20 years’ experience in the health service.
“They are for people to get together to discuss the end of life, death and bereavement in a friendly, non-judgemental way in a directed discussion where there is no agenda, objectives or themes.” Mireille, from Gentle Dusk, who has been running death cafés for five years, says many people have lost loved ones in the pandemic and not been able to be present at their end of lives. The event is open to the public and healthcare professionals. Mireille continued: “People are experiencing grief at a time when there is isolation and a lack of social support which has made the experience even more difficult. “We hope people will find this session useful in expressing some of their feelings and we look forward to holding more similar events in the future.”
“We are aware that many people are being faced with difficult situations around end of life care during this Covid-19 pandemic, yet many will not have the opportunity to share their thoughts with others, not only because of confinement, but also because of the lack of openness in our society around these issues.
Bristol Memorial Woodlands, just north of Bristol, is a regional funeral centre where families can mourn their loved ones in a beautiful woodland setting. The venue was running a series of seminars and workshops on death and dying before the pandemic and is now holding events, such as this one, online.
“Death Cafes are informal gatherings that provide time and space to talk about fundamental topics which are often avoided in everyday life yet affect us all.
The Death Café will take place on Saturday 28 November from 10.30am-12noon. Places are free but limited. To book your space visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ bristol-memorial-woodlands-death-cafe-tickets-126047915709

Green Energy Looking to the future Dale Edwards, a Strategic Consultant in Green Energy with national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, shares his thoughts on the importance of the UK Government creating, developing, and implementing a clear green energy strategy for the future. At a recent Conservative Party conference Boris Johnson claimed the UK would become a world leader in green energy by announcing ÂŁ160m of investment in infrastructure to increase electricity generation from offshore wind. The ambition to increase offshore wind capacity significantly by 2030, along with new jobs creation and part of the UK levelling up agenda, is very welcome, but much more detail is needed. This promise, according to the Government, is the first stage of a 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with more information to be communicated later in the year. It will be interesting to see what will be announced in the coming weeks and months to supplement the start of the green industrial revolution ambition and how it will be achieved along with the long-awaited energy white paper. In the days after the conference I asked a range of friends and business connections to describe what green energy means to them and what the other 9-points could include. Their responses were varied but the core of most of the answers focused on generating electricity from renewable sources, with wind and solar power dominating responses. Many who were asked did not automatically include generating power from alternative green sources such as nuclear, bioenergy, hydroelectric and district heating schemes, all established sources of low carbon energy generation. I learnt a valuable lesson; that just because I have been involved in green energy for a number of years, it does not mean that all are aware of what the sector consists of currently and in the future, along with the value in terms of achieving NetZero, jobs and economic output. 30
When talking about the future, there are many innovative ideas and solutions being brought forward including tidal, wave, hydrogen and fusion. Some have received increasing government interest and seed funding along with supply chain enthusiasm. It will be interesting to see if any of these will be part of the 10-point green industrial revolution, as potential solutions for the future could bring long term economic growth for the UK. Recently there has been a lot of talk about hydrogen being introduced to the green energy mix. Whilst significant work lies ahead, hydrogen has the potential of being a game changer in the battle with climate change. Already we have seen trials in the UK of using hydrogen as a form of power for trains and I look forward with interest to see how this will be scaled up to make a solid commercial and environmental case. EDF is exploring small scale production of hydrogen as part of its plans to build a new nuclear plant at Sizewell to kick start the hydrogen economy by powering an electrolyser, which could provide fuel for construction vehicles amongst other applications. Nuclear hydrogen production technologies have significant potential and benefits over other sources that might be considered for growing the hydrogen share as part of the UK green energy strategy, dependent on the type of the individual nuclear power plant.
However, alternative use of hydrogen including busing, road haulage and developing district heating schemes should not be forgotten. Therefore, there are two fundamental questions which need answering by the Government. Firstly, will we go for tried and tested green energy technologies or embrace the potential of the future? Secondly, what practical support including planning, funding, investment in skills and supply chains will the Government provide to enable the new green industrial revolution to take shape for the benefit of the environment and economy? Irrespective, it is great news that green energy is front and centre of the post Covid-19 recovery plans. Clarke Willmott’s nationally rated team of green energy specialist solicitors from a wide cross section of disciplines has extensive experience of delivering seamless, sector-focused advice on all aspects of energy generation and are excited in what the future could be.
We have built longstanding relationships in the low carbon energy sector over the last 20 years working with landowners, developers, contractors and operators and are looking forward to supporting businesses with the green recovery. In the coming months we will be organising a series of insightful and engaging webinars in collaboration with partner businesses and organisations, discussing a range of green energy related topics to help greater understanding and develop new opportunities.

Poppies On The Green Display Defies Covid-19. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain as well as Operation Dynamo (Dunkirk). ‘Poppies On The Green’ had already begun working on ideas for their display intended for The Green in Shirehampton, Bristol with a fundraiser show at the local Public Hall and engaging Arts Enlarged for their assistance. Then the Coronavirus arrived, we ended up in lockdown and all plans were put on hold. In the months following, plans were curtailed for something simpler but equally as stunning. This was goingto be a community project but even that had it’s obstacles. The ‘painting poppies’ sessions were suspende d and changed to ‘painting poppies at home’. The local schools were invited to provide art work that would be showcased in the local High Street shops and business. 34
Just as plans were well underway a second lockdown happened and they lost the volunteerswho were hoping to help put up the displays on The Green. However all was not lost and the ‘Poppies On The Green’ display was put up on Saturday 7th November. Although Shirehampton village was quieter than normal passers by shouted words of encouragement. Covid-19 may have done it’s best at stopping the display going ahead but it didn’t reckon with the people behind this community project. The display will remain on The Green until Monday 16th November. Ash Bearman and Kathryn Courtney-O’Neill head up “Poppies On The Green” and this yearhad additional help from Sally-Ann Knowlson – local artist and crafter – who was responsible for making the silhouette soldiers, and Tracy Zehtabi of Chatty Crafts who arranged the High Street shop displays with the artwork provided by local school children from Shirehampton Primary School, St. Bernards Primary School and Kings Weston School.
Additional painted poppies for the displays were provided by friends and volunteers by painting ‘poppies at home’ and additional materials were donated by D&D Locksmiths, Ocean Estate Agents, Shirehampton Cricket Club, Shire Christmas Illuminations, Colin Godfrey and Daphne Llewellyn. In fact the poppies display on The Green is 90% recycled or upcycled materials, doing their bit for the environment. Feedback for the ‘Poppies On The Green Display’ has been positive and reaction has been amazing. Even our resident silhouette soldiers Reg and Les, have been socially distancing on The Green and are named after Sally’s relatives who lived in the cottages nearby. A fundraising page has since been set up by the organisers for the Royal British Legion.
You can find out more information and photographs for Poppies On The Green here: www.facebook.com/poppiesonthegreen Ash Bearman from Shirehampton Community Action Forum (SCAF) that supports ‘Poppies On The Green’ said “We were determined to get the poppies display on The Green this year. We have overcome so many obstacles and with no church service of Remembrance or commemoration at the local war memorial, we wanted to make sure that those that gave their lives and those that returned had not been forgotten and will always be remembered. With all our events and activities having been cancelled this year we wanted something that people could focus on during this time. It couldn’t have happened without all the people that took part in making ‘Poppies On The Green’ a success this year.”

SUCCESS FOR SLIM2WIN MEMBERS Slim2Win is an innovative health and wellbeing project ran by Bristol City’s official charity – the Robins Foundation – which harnesses the competitive nature of football to help men with unhealthy BMI’s improve their fitness and lose weight. Since the resumption of the project in September, Slim2Win players have shed an incredible 176kg. One ‘Slim2Winner’ who has significantly improved his fitness with the support of the project is lifelong Bristol City fan, Tom Blackburn who has lost an incredible eight percent of his weight since September. Tom told the Foundation: “The main reason I joined Slim2Win was to improve my health so that I’m able to be an active dad to my two toddlers. “The environment at the sessions and the guys I play with have helped me every step of the way and have provided me with great motivation. I would recommend Slim2Win to anyone.” Bristol City Robins Foundation Slim2Win coordinator, Lee Gillett, commented: “The months of lockdown have had a serious impact on the lifestyles of us all with many of us becoming less active and leading less healthy lifestyles. Not only has it had negative physical implications, but it has also had a negative social impact with many people becoming socially isolated. “Slim2Win addresses both of these issues as it provides the encouragement and the motivation needed to help members achieve their weight loss targets, as well as combating isolation by keeping members connected. “It’s been great to see so many of our participants achieve their weight loss targets since the project resumed back in September.”
36
SLIM2WIN PARTICIPANT TOM BLACKBURN HAS LOST MORE THAN EIGHT PERCENT OF HIS STARTING WEIGHT
HOW DOES SLIM2WIN WORK? Slim2Win participants are placed into 7-a-side teams with like-minded individuals who share the same objective of losing weight and improving their general fitness. The teams then compete against one another in a competitive league. However, there is a difference with the Slim2Win league as teams are able to score goals off of the pitch as well as on, by achieving weight loss targets (targets are specifically tailored to each player). These ‘goals’ are then converted into real goals and help determine the outcome of the weekly competitive matches. Qualified Bristol City Robins Foundation coaches provide tailored support and advice to participants to further help achieve their fitness and weigh loss goals.
