Iconic Bristol car brand revived for 21st century • •

Manufacturing of Bristol Cars™ will return to city to boost local economy New battery electric vehicle, the Bristol Buccaneer™, to be developed

An iconic British car brand is being revived and remastered for the 21st century, restoring part of Bristol’s heritage and proving a boost for the city’s manufacturing sector. Select models from the classic Bristol Cars™ range will be remastered following the acquisition of intellectual property rights for the historic British car manufacturer by entrepreneur Jason Wharton.

Bristol Cars™ was originally formed in 1945 as the car division of the Bristol Aeroplane Company. The business was renowned for creating a series of premium, elegant two-door, four-seat saloon models from the Bristol 400™ saloon of 1946 to the Bristol Blenheim, before a radical departure with the two-seater Bristol Fighter™ supercar, unveiled in 2004.

Bristol Cars™ owner Wharton aims to re-engineer the distinctive vehicles on a buildto-order basis through his company Bristol Manufacturing Limited – with the creation of a new battery electric vehicle among his plans. The aim is to attract further investment to revive the marque into a leading British Electric Vehicle (EV) company by the time it marks its 80th anniversary in 2026.

In its heyday, Bristol Cars™ had a factory in the Filton area and had an exclusive showroom in Kensington High Street where it showcased its collection of refined grand tourers. However, the original company was placed into administration and wound up in 2011. It’s assets were purchased a month later, but over the last decade has remained largely inactive and when in 2020 it went into liquidation, it appeared a British motoring icon was lost forever.

Externally, the remastered vehicles will benefit from a mild facelift, but under the bonnet they will be re-engineered to 21st homologation standards. Each car will be fitted with a new 6.4 litre naturally aspirated Hemi Chrysler V8 powertrain, eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, while suspension, electrical architecture and interiors will be newly updated. Initially, three limited-edition series of eight remastered cars will be produced – the Bristol 411 Series 8, the Bristol Fighter™ and the Bristol Speedster™ – these are to be the final internal combustion engine Bristol Cars™ ever to be manufactured, as the entirely new Bristol Buccaneer™ will be a battery electric vehicle (BEV), scheduled for a start of production in 2025 in Filton, Bristol.

But Wharton, the owner of a Bristol Fighter™ and a Bristol 411™, both of which will be used to build the remastered prototypes, stepped in, spent an undisclosed sum on acquiring the intellectual property rights to Bristol Cars™, certain chassis jigs, and patterns and a new worldwide domain which will provide a new digital online customer platform. The appointment of a chief executive, head of engineering, and two non-executive directors is also planned for spring 2022, when a significant capital raise will also take place.

Wharton plans to eventually resume manufacturing at Filton, creating an ‘Atelier’ style final assembly and brand centre, close to the original site and to reopen a new Work is due to begin on the first remastered London showroom. He said: “Bristol is a vehicles this year, with road homologated quintessentially British brand that was prototypes likely to be ready towards the end renowned for creating luxurious and of 2021, when an extensive testing regime will distinctive vehicles. We want to revive and be undertaken. Orders are being taken now reinvigorate this iconic marque, preserving its for the remastered series of vehicles which heritage, while fully remastering it for the 21st will be delivered to customers in 2022 and century. 2023. 4

“This country has a remarkable tradition of creating low-volume, hand-manufactured vehicles, and Bristol Cars™ has for far too long been unable to fulfil its potential. We want to change that. “I see myself as a long-term investor in this iconic British brand, so part of my role is to take it forward and develop it so it can finally become sustainable as a premium automotive business, hence our need to move with the times, and introduce a fully battery electric model.” The remastered vehicle series will retail at around £495,000 plus VAT. Everything you want to know about mobile speed cameras There are plenty of things you 'know' about speed cameras and those mobile vans that appear at the side of roads or on overpasses. But how many of them are true? You probably think you can get away with speeding at up to 10 per cent over the limit, or that they'll only catch you on one side of the road. A speed reduction officer for the last seven years that wants to stay anonymous, let’s us inside his van to answer all the key questions and dispel some myths behind the mobile speed cameras. He said: “The aim of cameras is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Can officers only catch motorists travelling in one direction? No. Any car that passes a van is recorded on the officer’s camera. So if you’re exceeding the speed limit whether you’re driving in the same or opposite direction to the van, you can expect a speeding ticket. It is true that the 10% rule exists? Yes. You will not get a ticket provided your speed does not exceed the limit by more than 10%, plus 1 mile per hour (mph) on Bristol reads. So for example, travelling at 35mph or above in a 30mph zone will be recorded as a speeding offence. However, thresholds vary and can change without notice. Officially, any speeding offence occurs at 1mph above the limit, but most forces will allow a variance. Are officers revenue collectors for the Government?

“We prefer to educate drivers rather than punish them with fines and penalty points.”

No. He, explained: “We’re not here to get figures or to make money. We’re just here to catch the people who are speeding.

He also answered some questions about the mobile vans and speeding:

“If I get a day where I don’t get any drivers speeding, then I know I’ve done my job.

Is it true that speed vans have to be visible “If I’ve been working an eight hour shift, I just hope at least one person that day has at all times? escaped injury or a crash has been avoided.” No. There are no laws about visibility, so there is nothing stopping an officer operating in the dark. But they don’t often choose to do this, and maintain that being visible acts as a deterrent in its own right. He said: “Legally, we don’t have to be visible. I could camouflage myself if I wanted to - but it’s all about being fair, education and preventing an accident. “Even if I parked my van and went for a walk somewhere, it would deter people speeding 6

Can I get caught speeding more than once on the same day by the same camera?

Is it illegal to obstruct a vans view of the road?

The current position with us is that if you are caught twice in 20 minutes, it will be treated as one offence.

Yes. Obstructing a van’s field of view during its operational duties is an offence and you can be prosecuted for it.

In theory, a driver with a previously clean licence could be caught several times on the same day - and as a result be at risk of disqualification under the totting-up system.

Do officers enforce anything other than speeding?

If you are caught speeding several times on the same journey and accept a fixed penalty for each, you could be at risk of a penalty points disqualification (totting-up). “It can happen more easily than you might think, for example where several speed cameras are placed on the same road or motorway” However, where offences are deemed to have been committed “on the same occasion”, the court has discretion to impose only the one set of points for two or more offences. Whether or not offences will be treated as committed on the same occasion is a matter for the court to decide. They need not have been committed simultaneously, but they must be linked in some way. So if for example the offences were committed within a few minutes of each other, it may be possible to persuade the court to impose only one set of points. Every case will depend on its facts.

Yes. Officers are there to make sure you are wearing a seatbelt and are not using your mobile phones behind the wheel. Anyone caught breaking these laws will be prosecuted. This is the reason why you sometimes see a speed van in an area where there are already permanent speed cameras. How long do speed vans tend to stay at one particular spot? For technical reasons, a speed van will only remain in a certain spot for 1 hour and 30 minutes. During his average 8 hour shift, he will normally visit 3 different spots across the region where he has been ordered to visit. We hope this useful Intel will help you see the truth behind the ever increasing amout of cameras on the bristol roads.

Wishy - Granting Wishes For Charities Wishy.org.uk allows people to grant wishes for charities. The new not for profit company founded by Bristol based business friendsLiam Summersand Daniel Pidcock was launched successfully this week.

“I discussed with Daniel my idea for granting exact wishes to people who need it, when they need it, and how too often when donating money to charities you wonder how much impact your donation has.”

The idea for Wishy came about when co-founders Liam and Daniel were looking to donate to charity at Christmas. They discussed how they wanted to know how their donation could help someone, it felt impersonal to just donate money and they were interested in making it a gift especially for the time of year. Through these discussions they came up with the idea for Wishy and using their 20 years of web-based skill and experience they made their idea a reality.

“I wanted to create a new way of giving that allowed people to decide how their money was used and see the direct impact of their generosity.”

Charities can list ‘wishes’ for one-off needs or products or services they need regularly. For example, an animal shelter might have a one-off wish for money for a veterinary bill to be paid, or an ongoing wish for pet food. The public can grant these wishes by donating money on Wishy. Wishes are small enough that one donor fulfils the entire wish rather than adding to a larger pot and 100% of the donation goes directly to the charity. Liam has always supported local charities, “Every year my family put together backpacks and food parcels for the homeless and hand deliver them to people on the streets. During lockdown we discussed how we could help during these difficult times and how more than ever people and charities were struggling.”

“Wishy has social values at its core. Both Daniel and I are enormously proud of what we have built and believe it will connect people to the causes they care about. It has been an inspiring time so far and we have only just started. We are committed to helping great causes and reaching more people in a different and more personal way.” Daniel feels that the ability to grant a wish in its entirety is the key, “ Whether that is a couple of quid for an outfit for a baby that has died during birth or covering the cost of a whole day of a Mobile Cancer Care Unit: You know that you have been the person solely responsible for making that happen and the world a brighter place.” “We call these micro-grants: Small wishes that an individual can completely take care of no-matter their budget or personal circumstances. It’s incredibly gratifying to do.” “We’re excited to launch Wishy alongside 15 fantastic local charities and see what the public perception is. We hope to roll it out nationally over the next year.” For more information visit: http://wishy.org.uk/

DAD WHO WROTE FOR HIS DAUGHTER IS OFFERED A BOOK DEAL

An author who started writing a fantasy series to encourage his daughter to read and learn about social injustice has been offered a book deal.

I also created a female lead in the first series, with a disorder, to encourage female empowerment and let my readers know that it’s OK to be different.”

Ben Mears, who runs graphic design firm The Dream Loft in Clevedon, thought up story ideas while stuck in a traffic jam with then 10-year-old Henna.

The dad-of-three daughtersself-published the young adult Tyler May series. A Sock Full of Bones was the first of his novels to be traditionally published.

The Haunting of Tyler May was the first of six instalments based on the adventures of a teenage girl.

Ben, 51, who started writing as a hobby 25 years ago and now plans to write full-time, said: “I’ve been submitting to agents for years and came close before - but it didn’t quite fit. I honed my skills and was thrilled to get a book deal after years of hard work and dedication.”

And now the writer and illustrator’s A Banyard and Mingle Mystery series has been published – to rave reviews. Ben, who runs creative writing workshops at schools, academies and sixth forms, said: “I think it’s so important for young people to read. “Reading not only helps academically, but develops greater empathy, imagination and understanding of the world around us. “I have written books which look at inequality and social injustice in an age-appropriate way. 16

Ben, who is also a published songwriter, had several requests from publishers to see the full manuscript and struck a deal with Instant Apostle – which addresses pressing and sometimes overlooked social issues of our day. A Sock Full of Bones set in a quasi-Victorian future dystopia, with Banyard and Mingle as the detective duo fighting crime in a divided and unjust society.

Ben said: “I write adventures and fantasy, which the reader can escape into. There is also an underlying message of tolerance, self-acceptance and the drive to fight the good fight.” Henna, now 19, who is studying psychology at the University of Reading, added: “These books raise a lot of social issues, such as how people may be treated differently or unjustly because they are not accepted by society.” The follow-up books The Green Ink Ghost and The Shadow of Grayrton Mire are also out now and available online. JOIN THE PROS FOR A STAR-STUDDED EXPERIENCE AT THE MANOR HOUSE

European Tour ace Laurie Canter put on a dazzling display on his way to winning the inaugural Manor House Pro-Am two years ago, and another star-studded line-up is expected when the popular event returns at the prestigious Wiltshire club this summer.

Considered one of the best courses in the south-west of England, The Manor House’s delightful layout is immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the Cotswolds, with 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside as a backdrop.

Amateurs from across the south of England are now being invited to enter this year’s pro-am, which will take place at the Castle Combe venue on Tuesday, August 31, and is being run in association with VPAR – the market-leading technology platform for live scoring.

Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the mature oak and beech trees that line the beautifully manicured fairways, together with the immaculate greens and the River Bybrook meandering through the middle, bring both drama and beauty to the 6,500-yard parkland course.

Canter, who finished 19th in the 2020 Race to Dubai, carded an impressive five birdies and two eagles to take first prize in 2019, and participants at this year’s event can expect another fun-packed day on and off the course.

The golf club is part of a wider estate, which encompasses a 12th-century pub, The Castle Inn, and a luxury country house hotel, The Manor House, a 14th-century stately building with an enviable reputation, owned and managed by the Exclusive Collection.

Featuring a field of 25 teams – with professionals competing for a total prize fund of £5,000 – players will enjoy 18 holes on The Manor House’s acclaimed 18-hole championship course including buggies, as well as breakfast on arrival, a BBQ afterwards and an array of top prizes sponsored by Adidas.

For more information on The Manor House Pro-Am 2021 and to book, please phone 01249 783101 or email proshop@manorhouse.co.uk .

Entry for the team event, which will be played with a Stableford format with the best two scores to count on each hole, costs £450 for a team of three players, with practice rounds and bed-and-breakfast accommodation packages also available for guests looking to extend their stay. 18

Garden landscaping ideas how to plan and create your perfect garden Re-designing your garden is an exciting prospect. Do you wish you had somewhere to sit, relax, entertain or let the children play? Maybe you are just a little bored and want a garden design that is more colourful, varied or maintenance friendly. Garden landscaping is the ideal way to craft an attractive space to grow plants that give you a beautiful environment and design a practical layout that allows you to use your garden how you want. But where do you start? Take a look at our answers to common garden landscaping questions; whether its planning and budgeting, resourcing and building or aesthetic planting, our guide holds the key to the garden landscaping design of your dreams. How do I start my garden design? Landscaping ideas start with good research. Take inspiration by visiting garden centres, public gardens, annual garden shows, even other people’s houses to get a feel of what is to your taste. Take into account your garden size and think about what you need your garden to do for you. Then, take to the drawing board to sketch your ideas and make mood boards from magazines and Pinterest of your dream garden landscape.

Elements to consider when first planning garden landscaping ideas Walls and boundaries Hedges and fences Paths and patios

Next consider your plot. Look at the size and shape and take into consideration the direction if faces, the style of your house it will be framing and the surrounding area. Achieving balance is a strong aspect of good garden design; pay equal attention to all areas and remember that plants and shrubs will change size and shape throughout the seasons. Do you prefer formal or informal gardens? Formal gardens tend to be tidy and geometric with lots of straight lines and clipped hedges, whereas informal gardens are made up of organic curves and planting is much more relaxed. Soften a sloping garden with grass steps If your garden is on different levels but you’re not keen on hard landscaping severely breaking things up take inspiration from this garden we saw in North Bristol. Instead of incorporating stone steps, They used grass treads, integrating them into the existing lawn to connect the lower patio to the small sun terrace above. Creating a softer approach to the flow, seamlessly journeying from one space to the other. Pave the way The trend for creating garden zones is hugely popular, meaning the need for having a garden path is great. A link that unites the different areas is not only highly practical, it can also be visually appealing as this example demonstrates. Without a pathway you’ll soon find that you tread an unsightly channel into the lawn – which will ruin all your hard work with the overall garden aesthetic.

Zoning areas (dining, playing, shading)

While the best time to redesign your space is in winter when plants are dormant, looking at it in summer gives you the chance to really understand how you use the space. Or if you just want to add new surfaces, you can do so now and reap the rewards this summer.

Planting: trees, shrubs, pots

NEW STREET FOR BRISTOL AS CARSONS ROAD TAKES SHAPE IN GREENBANK

A street of new homes within a 15-minute cycle ride of the centre of Bristol have gone on sale at the latest phase of The Chocolate Factory in Greenbank, Bristol, BS5. With just one home remaining in the first row of houses, Generator South West have now released the next phase of 3- and 4-bedroom houses with prices from £435,000. These houses benefit from off street parking with a charging point for an electric vehicle, a rare commodity in the area. They are also the first to be built on what will be a new street for Greenbank. Carsons Road is named after one of the companies which ran the factory during its 100-year history. The larger houses on this next phase have already proved popular with a range of buyers, including people who already live in the neighbourhood. Mya Castillo, sales and marketing consultant to the project, commented: “We are seeing interest from people who already live in BS5 but who need more space and don’t want to leave the neighbourhood as they love living here so much but need more space. “The four-bedroom houses with roof terraces have been particularly popular as it’s unusual to find large houses with off street parking in BS5. 26

We are now taking reservations for these properties off-plan and are helping buyers visualise what these will be like with the new computer-generated image showing the kitchen-diner space and French doors leading out to the garden.” In addition to the electric vehicle charging points the houses also feature bike stores with access from the rear of the property – perfect for easy access to the Bristol & Bath Railway Path and ideal for getting around the neighbourhood or cycling into Temple Meads or the City Centre. Once complete The Chocolate Factory will create a vibrant and popular space for the whole neighbourhood, featuring not just new houses and apartments but also a shop, a café / bar, restaurant and new workspaces for local businesses, as well as the new access to the Path which will benefit both the new residents and people already living in Greenbank. The current release is now selling off-plan with completions due in the summer. To help buyers visualise what their home could be like there is a show home available to view by appointment and a visitor centre where potential buyers can see a model of the whole site and take a virtual street tour around the completed development.

Chris Hill, of joint-selling agents CJ Hole, whose Redfield office is helping buyers sell their properties to move to the development, said: “Greenbank is a fantastic, hugely popular community with the city centre easily accessible using sustainable transport, good schools and a great community spirit. The whole development is being created in the spirit of the surrounding area and providing much-needed housing.” The Visitor Centre and Marketing Suite is open Thursday – Monday with viewings by appointment, which can be made by calling 0117 374 6600 or email enquiries@chocolatefactorybristol.com For more information click the Image on the left

FREE END OF LIFE TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS IN As part of Dying Matters Awareness Week, taking place from 10-16 May, Bristol funeral venue Memorial Woodlands has launched a new programme of free end of life training for professionals in the care sector. In partnership with leading bereavement training provider Mireille Hayden of Gentle Dusk, Memorial Woodlands is offering care home staff and managers, who have been hit by loss during the pandemic, the opportunity to book free half-day training sessions. The supportive programme of training includes information and practical skills around end of life care planning as well as a workshop for staff on bereavement. The sessions will take place virtually over two half-days.

“This training explains the importance of knowing residents’ wishes, sharing those wishes with the right people and ensuring they are carried out with dignity.

Mireille Hayden, Founding Director of Gentle Dusk, said: “The past year has been extremely challenging for the care home sector and its staff and managers have been faced with bereavement on both a personal and professional level.

“Our cares have experienced a lot of bereavement, grief and loss over the last year, some personal too, and having a safe place to express their feelings with people that understand, has helped them identify and deal with their strong emotions.

“I have been working closely with Bristol Memorial Woodlands to deliver these courses following requests from front-line staff and leaders. We have now piloted delivering the sessions in a bespoke whole-systems approach to a major local care home group. We received really positive feedback from everyone who attended so we decided to roll out the programme and offer it to more organisations who would benefit.

“It becomes a healthier conversation when we link our own grief to how we want our final days to be and how our lives will be celebrated. The training draws these discussions out of heavy hearts and makes things seem much more optimistic and gives us an appreciation of how we really make a massive difference by simply talking about death.”

“The programme will be free for the next six months for all care homes in Bristol and surrounding areas. It supports open conversations and provides staff with greater understanding and confidence in addressing the issues around these taboo subjects.” Bristol Care Homes has already provided its staff with the training. Tania Bartholomew, Group Care Quality Manager, said: “Gathering information about our residents’ end of life plan is a really important part of what our care staff do.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre site in Alveston offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials. Trees and wild flowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest and the area is managed by a charitable trust to ensure it will be open forever for future generations to visit. Tips And Tricks For laying laminate flooring

Laminate is attractive for a few reasons. It is just a good tight floor that requires minimal maintenance. Laminate flooring is normally durable and in comparison with other types of flooring not costly. If you're following theses steps carefully, it is possible to setup any flooring straight away on your own. A fairly nice activity job for two individuals to undertake. What do I need? - Laminate - Underfloor + joining tape - Skirtings - Mitre Saw / Jig Saw - Tapeline - Hammer - Spacers - Pencil - Square Step 1 Prepare everything you have obtained for the project to start out. The ground where one must place the laminate ought to be completely flat and free of dirt and dust. Step 2 Then you may start with the actual sub floor. This is basically the sound, humidity and heat insulation. There are numerous types of flooring on the market. Make sure when choosing your sub floor to select the one that fits your floor the best. When rolling out the sub floor. Simply place the underlay along with joining tape together. 32

Step 3 Now you can begin at one corner, between the walls and the laminate place spacers an 8mm apart around the room between the wall and the laminate. This help the laminate to expand against the wall in hot and cold climates. First, place a whole sheet of flooring. After that you can work the room. Hold the plank in a angle of about forty-five degrees and tap the boards together using a rubber hammer and off cut of laminate to ensure you don’t ruin the tung or grove of the next board. I recommend using a dremel tool to cut out spaces under skirting that is surrounding doors to get a seamless finish if your leaving the original skirting in place Step 4 When the laminate is completed , you may start the skirting to hide the 8mm. You can find a variety of skirting for sale at places like B and Q. The simplest to use is the bull nosed variety. This can be a good choice seeing as there are absolutely no fancy edges to cut. Cut the skirting boards inside a corner with a miter saw at forty-five degrees. This way you will get good, tight edges. Step 5 Your floor is ready! Thoroughly clean the surface with a lightweight. Wet cloth. Not too wet, because laminate are not able to endure that. Be careful while positioning the furniture. Putting them on laminate (specially with the cheaper ones) can quickly get them scratched. The best you can do is ensure the bottom part of the legs is properly flat.

Bristol hoteliers call for support from newly-elected mayors Hoteliers in Bristol are urging the two newly-elected mayors to give a firm show of support for the city’s hospitality industry now that they have been sworn in. Marvin Rees (Labour) was re-elected as Mayor of Bristol at the weekend and former Wansdyke MP Dan Norris (Labour) became West of England Mayor, succeeding Conservative Tim Bowles. The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) is calling on both men to speak up for the local hospitality industry, which was one of the hardest-hit sectors during the pandemic. Raphael Herzog, BHA Chair, said: “Local people have given Marvin Rees and Dan Norris a vote of confidence by electing them to their positions, and we would like to congratulate them on their election victories. “Now we’d like to see both men give our businesses a vote of confidence as lockdown restrictions ease and we begin the long road to recovery.” Throughout the pandemic the BHA has lobbied local MPs and civic leaders for support. Mr Herzog said the elections have presented an opportunity to renew those calls and for the elected representatives to show that they are determined to stand up for local businesses. He said: “Even if most, or all, restrictions are lifted on 21 June, it is still going to take time for our businesses to get fully up and running, which is why we need continued support. “We would invite Mr Rees and Mr Norris to support out call for an extended business rates holiday for the hospitality sector. 36

“We would also like to see the reduced rate of VAT be extended, and for the furlough scheme to be extended and also be applicable for new employees, as this may give people increased confidence to choose a career in our sector. “The fact that hospitality businesses were always among the first to close and the last to be able to re-open during the various lockdowns this year had a negative impact on people when it came to job security and stability. “We need help to restore people’s confidence and to raise awareness of the many varied and tremendous career opportunities within our exciting sector. “We are hoping our newly-elected representatives will add their voices to ours, to help us get what we’ve been asking for ever since the first lockdown – to be treated fairly compared to other industries. “We also really need political leaders to help promote our industry in this area. We have many vacancies but not enough people choosing to work in our sector. The Kick-Start scheme has not been successful for us and we need more support. “We also need them to support our lobbying for the Government to review the EU Brexit rules on people working in our industry, so that more EU citizens can be allowed to work in the industry. “Although we can re-open to guests on 17 May, some hotels can only operate at 70% occupancy and restaurants in bars can only safely operate at 40% or 50% of their usual occupancy, so our businesses continue to face many challenges, which is why we still need support.”

Indoor dining, yoga and more to return to Wapping Wharf, Bristol's harbourside community People urged to support the quarter's independent businesses but act responsibly when doing so Indoor dining, yoga and more will return to Wapping Wharf, Bristol’s much-loved harbourside quarter, from next week in line with the Government’s roadmap for lifting lockdown.

LOKI POKÉ is planning on opening the doors to its Wapping Wharf home in early June, launching with a new summer menu and a ‘Build Your Own Bowl’ salad bar.

Elevate Yoga Studio + Creative Space, which has been offering virtual sessions during lockdown, will re-open from May 17th, offering a range of yoga and fitness classes, 7 days a week from its ventilated and air-purified studio. The new schedule can be found here.

Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf, said: “It’s been wonderful welcoming people back to the neighbourhood over the last few weeks and we are very much looking forward to seeing more businesses re-open and indoor dining able to resume from next week. We thank everyone for the incredible support they have shown Wapping Wharf’s independent businesses so far and their collaboration in ensuring that the area is a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.”

Many businesses are continuing with initiaHere is a taste of what’s to come, with people tives set up during lockdown, for example encouraged to keep an eye on businesses’ Meatbox Butchers which will be continuing social media channels for further updates: with its online delivery service.

Bandook Kitchen, which has been welcoming guests to its outside area, will also offer the opportunity to dine inside the restaurant from May 17th. Woky Ko Rooftop, which is already welcoming customers to its rooftop terrace, will open for indoor dining from May 18th. Woky Ko Cargo will focus on its outside area for the time being. BOX-E, which has been welcoming diners to its terrace over the last few weeks, is re-opening its indoor dining from May 19th. Tare is reopening with a new menu and wine list on May 19th Wild Beer at Wapping Wharf will be reopening its indoor space from May 19th, offering a diverse craft beer line-up and a new food menu. Bookings are available for guests eating in and walk-in tables are available for drinks only. Online bookings launching soon. Pizzarova at Wapping Wharf has been working on a new and improved menu, as well as with Fareshare on their Look Feed You, Feed Two campaign launching on Saturday, May 29th. 38

People can continue to dine al fresco thanks to the new stretch tents that were put in place ahead of April 12th on the upper levels of CARGO 1 and 2, Wapping Wharf’s popular retail hub made of converted shipping containers. Additional outdoor seating has also been accommodated at the bottom of Gaol Ferry Steps, between Wild Beer and CARGO 1, with pedestrian and cycle access. The Wapping Wharf team launched the Wapping Wharf Code last month (April) to encourage people to help keep the area a safe and enjoyable place for everyone. The Code built on existing measures in place at Wapping Wharf, which include one-way systems within CARGO 1 and 2 and signage to encourage people to keep their distance from one another and queue appropriately.

A short film was created at the end of 2020 celebrating the independent businesses at Wapping Wharf as they continued to adapt and collaborate through lockdown. Produced by Lorne Kramer, of Under the Wing Productions, the film is a reminder of what makes independent businesses so unique. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol’s historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important c onnection between south Bristol to the city centre. Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO - a popular hub made of converted shipping containers, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city’s best independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle businesses.

APPRENTICES SPEARHEAD THE NEXT GENERATION Two trainee accountants, both of whom decided against the option of university, are leading the next generation of qualified professionals at Bristol firm Haines Watts. Sophia Wallace and Robbie Wallis, aged 22 and 23 respectively, are the latest staff members at Haines Watts Bristol to become qualified accountants at the growing, SME specialist firm. The pair, who opted to avoid the significant student debts incurred by three years at university, are just two of the nine trainees taken on by the firm in the past three years. And whereas many graduates of the same age are struggling to find jobs, hampered by debt, Sophia and Robbie are well on their way to progressing their careers. Sophia, who lives in Totterdown, started at Haines Watts in 2017, straight after leaving St Brendan’s College at the age of 18. She has spent four years achieving her Level 7 apprenticeship in a mixture of college-based and online learning with Kaplan Financial. “I definitely think I’ve made the right decisions,” she said. “I’ve missed some of the social aspect of university but it’s not a massive loss. And I’d advise anyone who’s in the position I was in four years ago to think of the future benefits of whichever option. “In a few years, 10 years out from leaving college, I expect to be in a managerial role, free of debt, looking after clients. That’s going to be a great place to be.” 40

Robbie is 23 and has recently bought a house in Bedminster, shared with a friend. Originally from Somerset, he self-funded a bookkeeping course while working part-time as a lifeguard during studying for A-Levels. His first job was with a small family firm in Bridgwater, during which time he started residential studies at Reed Business School in the Cotswolds. He began working for Haines Watts at the start of 2020 and became fully qualified last December, having passed all exams necessary to become a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He said: “We were all pushed towards the university route at school but I knew for definite that I didn’t want to take that option. I remember my grandparents being stunned when I told them. But it all makes sense to them now. “I’ve always worked, I’ve liked earning my own money and spending my own money. The whole debt thing has always seemed really unattractive to me. “The route I’ve chosen hasn’t been an easy one. It’s been hard graft for five years and the accountancy exams are extremely tough. Having that continuous pressure – rather than a few months at the end of a degree – was pretty intense. “But I think if you’re dedicated and ready to put socialising on the back burner, going straight into work is an option which will pay dividends later.

“I’ve had my setbacks along the way but I had a goal to aim for and the determination and resilience to get me through. I’ve worked so hard to get to this point, that now I’m going to recharge the batteries, enjoy what I’ve achieved and work out what I want to do next.” Matthew Bracher, managing director at Haines Watts Bristol, said there were many benefits to taking on young accountants who have decided to pursue careers rather than going to university. “Firstly, anyone who takes on a career at the age of 18 and recognises the long-term advantages of avoiding significant debt is demonstrating a maturity and shrewdness which reflects well on their personality,” he said. “Those are the type of people we are looking to offer opportunities to, as they see the world in a pragmatic way. “In addition, we are interested in being able to train young talent in the values and practices we expect at Haines Watts – it is rewarding to see them develop into people who can really advise and help other people.

Having a degree doesn’t always give those personal skills that we look for. “We have an established trainee programme here, as well as manager and partner level development programmes, which works well for us as a business and is a key part of facilitating growth in the SME market, as well as supporting our longer term ambitions. “Robbie and Sophia, as well as the other trainees we have taken on during the past year or so, have settled in brilliantly and we look forward to seeing their continued progress.”
