Secrets of a long life: 12 simple and surprising tips to help you live to 100 Here are some simple and often surprising tricks that research shows can extend your life..
4 Eat three walnuts a day Walnuts are the healthiest nut of all because they contain the most disease-fighting and anti-ageing antioxidants, according to recent search from the U niversity of London

One Israeli study found that moderate tea drinkers lived substantially longer than those who don’t have a regular cuppa. But r emember to give it a good stir before removing the tea bag, as research shows this releases 15% more of the age-resisting ingredients. 2 Balance on one leg every morning It may sound strange, but standing on alternative legs while you dress in the morning forces your body to balance, strengthening your ‘core’ (back, pelvic and stomach) muscles which support your spine.
5 Use less sunscreen but don’t burn Figures show that 50% of people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D, the nutrient made by the action of sunlight on our skin, increasing our risk of a host of potentially fatal conditions including heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer. To boost your v itamin D levels without raising your risk of skin cancer, Cancer Research UK now recommends getting a few minutes (in practice around 15 to 20) of sun around the middle of the day without sunscreen. But make sure you don’t burn, or you’ll wipe out any health benefits.

9 Be a details person Research by Uk psychologist Dr Friedman has found that the best predictor of longevity is how conscientious a person is. That’s right – people who are careful with money, thoughtful, detail-focused and like to put everything back in its rightful place tend to live longer! It’s thought that conscientious people may produce more of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin, which stops them comfort-eating and improves their sleep. They also appear to be drawn towards healthier choices and can live less risky lifestyles. 10 Buy yourself a pet, and preferably a dog People who own a pet are less stressed, less depressed and can live longer than those who don’t, according to research.
7 Stop eating when you’re 80% full The Okinawans, who inhabit remote Japanese islands, have one of the world’s lowest rates of obesity, as well as the highest percentage of people living beyond 100. The calming effect of owning an animal can even drop blood pressure and reduce your risk of a heart attack, according to University of The West Of England. Another study found owners who walk their dogs daily lived an average of seven years longer than otherwise similar non-dog owners. 11 Don’t put fruit in the fridge You might think you’re making it last longer, but studies show that chilled fruit contains fewer health-boosting nutrients than fruit, which has been kept at room temperature.
Researchers have also found animals can live up to twice as long when their food intake is reduced by up to a third. This year’s Bristol Young Heroes have had their bravery and hard work recognised and celebrated at a star-studded awards ceremony. On Friday 1st October over 300 guests gathered at We The Curious for a glitzy gala awards evening to celebrate the 2021 Bristol Young Heroes Awards and see the winners announced. Hosted by former BBC Bristol presenter Emma Britton, the event saw 12 awards given out for astonishing acts of compassion, good deeds and courage. The night was truly spectacular, and fitting with the carnival theme. We saw a wonderful performance from one of our finalists; Razzamataz and an engaging display of Samba drummers and dancers from our friends at Bristol Samba. And the Winner is... Among the award winners on the night were Megan and Grace who were walking home from school when they witnessed an awful road traffic accident. Despite the terrible scene in front of them, both girls stayed and were able to support those injured whilst also calling for help. The girls saved the lives of multiple people that day. CJ Fitton won the overall Young Hero 2021 Award for her ability to overcome a series of extremely challenging personal circumstances and issues, and to come out the other side. Nominated by Youth Moves, she has been working and campaigning to improve the situation for other young people in a similar position, improving the accessibility of mental health support. Another winner, Gabe Rusenieks is a passionate member of Young Bristol’s Kayak club. Since joining in 2020 Gabe has made tremendous progress on the water despite being partially sighted. Gabe has overcome this barrier to continue to develop and grow in an activity that he loves, and is now a key member of the group who also supports others to feel more confident on the water.

Increase in NI and dividend tax – what does this mean for me? The Prime Minister has announced that for the 22/23 tax year, national insurance rates, and dividend rates will increase by 1.25%. Grammatically this is correct but is mathematically misleading. For a basic rate taxpayer, the tax rate on dividends is 7.5%. This will rise to 8.75%, which is an increase of 16.7%. The employed rate of NI is 12% and will rise to 13.25% this represents a 10.4% increase. These are very significant increases, in real terms far above the 1.25% as reported.
So, what can we do to mitigate these increases? On the face of it not a lot. However, there are a few measures we can take:
So, what does this mean for the director on a tax efficient 50k remuneration?
1. Don’t take more dividends than you need to. This needs to be weighed against the risk of keeping additional funds in the company. 2. When recruiting, two part time positions rather than one full time position may help to reduce or eliminate any additional employers national insurance. The above figures are for individuals. It shouldn’t be forgotten that employees NI is also increasing from 13.8% to 15.05%. For small employers who claim the employment allowance of £4000 and where the £4000 continues to cover all of the employers NI there will be no noticeable difference, however, for those paying employers NI, they will see a significant increase in the NI costs of their workforce. 12
3. Ensure you are using alphabetical shares appropriately (i.e. use wife and husbands allowances). 4. Ensure all expenses are claimed as this may reduce the amounts of dividends taken. If you are looking for advice on Ni and dividend tax give us a call on: 0117 923 5394 or email us at enquiries@ tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk or you can visit www.tsabuisnessadvisors.co.uk

BRISTOL MEMORIAL WOODLANDS SPONSORS GOOD GRIEF BRISTOL FESTIVAL Local funeral venue, Bristol Memorial Woodlands, has sponsored this year’s Good Grief Bristol Festival, which is taking place on 30 and 31 October. As well as being a sponsor of the event, they have teamed up with training provider Gentle Dusk to run four virtual Death Café’s over the course of the weekend.
Although people might imagine that attending a Death Café will be a morbid or depressing experience, most find it enlivening and comforting to connect with people on this very important aspect of existence. Conversations are decided on the day by people who attend. People often feel a sense of relief and community, sharing their ideas and being listened to without judgement.”
Gentle Dusk founder Mireille Hayden and her team of experienced facilitators will provide the sessions where people can talk, listen and ask questions around the topic of death – a subject many people find difficult.
Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “We are delighted to be a sponsor of this year’s Good Grief Bristol Festival and to be running these important sessions.
The festival features 50+ virtual events including talks and interviews, grief school, mindfulness sessions and grief chats. A headline event at this year’s festival is Ruby Wax in conversation with leading psychotherapist Julia Samuel.
“Death is inevitable for all of us and yet there is still a taboo around talking about it. We should all be discussing what we want to happen to our bodies after we die; what sort of funeral we would like to have and our hopes and fears around death.”
Mireille Hayden, who is a health psychologist and leading bereavement expert, said: “The Good Grief Festival is a fantastic annual event which provides a much-needed space for people to dispel the taboo of talking about death and dying.
Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre site in Alveston offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials. Trees and wild flowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest and the area is managed by a charitable trust to ensure it will be open forever for future generations to visit.
“I am pleased to be running four Death Café events at this year’s festival, following the success of last year’s sessions. 14

Jack o’ lantern empanadas
Method
Ingredients 375g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1/4 tsp each turmeric, paprika and salt 150g cold unsalted butter, cubed 2 British egg yolks 200g sweet potato, diced into 1.5cm cubes 1 red pepper, cut into 1.5cm chunks 2 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tsp dried oregano|Pinch of chilli flakes 125g bag baby spinach
16
Preheat the oven to 200ºC/fan 180ºC/Gas 6. To make the pastry, whizz the flour, turmeric, paprika, salt and butter into a crumb texture. Mix 1 egg yolk with 75ml water, add to the blender and pulse until the mixture comes together. Tip the dough onto a clean work surface and bring together with your hands. Knead briefly into a smooth ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 mins. While it’s chilling, toss the sweet potato and pepper in 1 tbsp of the oil in a roasting tin, and season. Roast for 15 mins or until just tender. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and cook the onion and garlic gently for 10 mins, until soft. Stir in the oregano and chilli, then the sweet potato, pepper and spinach. Cook for 1-2 mins until the spinach has wilted, season and leave to cool before adding the Feta. Halve the pastry and roll out on a floured surface to a thickness of 3-5mm. With a pumpkin template (see tip), cut out 10 shapes from each half. Transfer to a lined baking tray and chill in the fridge. Put a heaped tablespoon of filling in the centre of 10 pumpkins. Brush some of the remaining egg yolk on the edge of each, then place the other pumpkins on top. Press the edges to seal, and crimp with a fork. Chill for 10-15 mins until firm. Cut out faces using a small, sharp knife, then brush all over with more egg yolk. Bake for 25-30 mins, until the pastry is crisp and golden. Leave to cool a few minutes before serving.

5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know Were From Bristol
The North American Accent
Blankets
Chocolate
Methodism
There is suggestion that Bristol’s accent directly influenced that of North America. We’re not saying that they’re the same but put them side by side and you can certainly hear a link. This is likely to be because (many, many years ago) the very first Pilgrims set off for America from Bristol’s port and after that trade was strong between the two places for a long, long time. It’s no surprise that the two accents are linked.
It’s true, a native Bristolian called Joseph Fry was the very first person to create the chocolate bar as we know it. Chocolate had been around for a while before hand but it was in the guise of a drink. It was Fry that turned this idea into an actual bar and so the world can thank Bristol (especially Mr Fry!) for the gift of chocolate.
Ribena 20
Now we admit that we can’t be 100% certain on this one but legend does have it that it was a wool merchant from Bristol that actually invented the blanket. His name, Edward Blanket, gives us a clue that he may have been the inventor and we’re pretty sure that he’d be super proud today knowing that the humble blanket is used on every corner of the earth.
The first Methodist preacher was a Bristolian. In 1739 John Wesley took the first steps to a new strain of religion called Methodism. He preached a sermon from Hanham Mount to local miners and similar style sermons were soon incredibly popular. In the same year the very first Methodist chapel was built, also in Bristol.
This popular drink is also from Bristol. It was originally invented at the National Fruit and Cider Institute and is now sold globally. Bristol

Improving Temple Street in Keynsham
Residents in Keynsham are being asked how they would like Temple Street to look in the future. Concept design proposals to make the area more attractive, engaging and vibrant while enhancing its historic identity have just been released as part of the Keynsham Heritage Action Zone (HS HAZ) Programme. The £1.1m four-year project to improve the town’s Conservation Area is a partnership between Bath & North East Somerset Council, Historic England and Keynsham Town Council. Landscape Architects Macgregor Smith have worked with the project partners and members of the local community to create the proposals for Temple Street which will now go out to public consultation. Councillor Richard Samuel, Deputy Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council and cabinet member for Resources and Economic Development said: “The concept designs have been inspired by Keynsham’s past and aim to strengthen Temple Street’s identity as an independent part of Keynsham’s High Street while promoting sustainable economic and cultural growth and improving quality of life in the town centre. 22
“We want to celebrate Temple Street’s historic character while making it a more appealing and vibrant place to visit by improving the streetscape, particularly around the historic terrace of shops and the Grade II listed Trout Tavern. We also want to reduce the dominance of Riverside, revitalise underused spaces, green the street with planting and trees, improve accessibility and the street’s connection to key areas in the town such as Memorial Park. “We think these initial concept proposals address these issues, but it’s important local people shape their own community which is why I’m urging people to get involved in the consultation and help inform the detailed design proposals.” During the six-week consultation, which runs from Tuesday October 12 – Monday 22 November, a series of drop-in sessions and physical and virtual meetings will be held for residents, businesses and community groups to provide feedback and have their voices heard. This includes in person sessions drop-in sessions anytime between 13.00 – 16.00 on the following Thursdays; 14 and 21 October and 4, 11 and 18 November 2021. Further details about these sessions and can be found on HiKeynsham.co.uk under the ‘What’s On’ section, more digital and in person sessions will also be added here soon.
Councillor Andy Wait, Chair of Keynsham Town Council shared: "Temple Street has a huge potential to become something very special in Keynsham. The first step in this renaissance is the upgrading of the public spaces on the street. Please take the time to look at the proposed upgrade and comment. This is your chance to give an opinion on the changes suggested. Your views count. It isn't too late for these ideas to change". A digital version of the proposed concept designs and online feedback form can be found on our webpage. Hardcopy versions can be viewed at Keynsham Town Council, Temple Street Canteen and Keynsham Library. Paper copies of the feedback form can also be collected from these locations.
The improvements to Temple Street are part of Bath & North East Somerset Council's wider High Streets Renewal Programme which will see £3.6m invested into the rejuvenation of Keynsham's High Street. This includes the separate project 'Keynsham High Street Public Realm Improvements Phase 1', which is already underway. It focuses on the Core High Street, including footpath decluttering, widening and resurfacing, better signage, cycling and bus stop facilities and new seating, streetlights, landscaping and trees. WHATS GOING ON IN BRISLINGTON
Brislington War Memorial clean-up: Once again we want to tidy up our War Memorial prior to Remembrance Sunday next month. We plan to meet at 10am on Saturday, 23 October to cut back some of the undergrowth, sweep the site and do a litter pick. We’ll also be decorating the memorial with hundreds of knitted poppies and we would also like to encourage as many of you as possible to buy a poppy to support the important work of the British Legion. If you would like to help us with the tidy up, do feel free to join us. Unfortunately, there will be no official Remembrance Service at the Memorial this year as all our local churches are open and will be holding their own services. However, let’s make sure the Brislington War Memorial looks its best to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Jubilee Pool update: Jos was able to attend last week’s Friends of Jubilee Pool meeting at Redcatch Road Community Centre. 24
The Friends have now submitted an expression of interest for a Community Asset Transfer but this is likely to take some time. Bristol City Council will not subsidise the pool after March, 2022. However, the operators, Parkwood, will continue to keep the pool open without the subsidy as long as it is profitable, which it currently is. Unfortunately, if it starts to run at a loss, they will have no option but to close the pool. A big pressure is going to be the rise in gas prices! Litter-pick success: Thank you to everyone who attended our community litter pick on Saturday. We managed to amass quite a haul down by Bloomfield and Whitby Road near Sainsbury’s. We also did the little lane that runs up to Sandhill. During the litter pick, we noticed dozens and dozens of blue plastic gloves stuck in the bushes that had blown over from Sainsbury’s petrol station so we popped in and spoke to the duty manager about the issue. He promised to look into the dispensing mechanism to ensure all this plastic doesn’t end up trapped in neighbouring bushes.
City centre and high streets recovery consultation: COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on our high street businesses. To help the Council develop action plans and better understand where funding will be put to best use to aid their recovery, they are looking for information and ideas from businesses, residents and visitors on improvements to be made. The areas of focus include: • City centre • Brislington (Brislington Hill / Bristol Hill) • Church Road, St George • East Street, Bedminster • Filton Avenue • Filwood Broadway • Shirehampton High Street • Stapleton Road
Parking on yellow zig-zags outside school: It has come to our attention that a number of parents are parking on the yellow zig-zag lines outside school entrances in order to drop off and pick up their children. Please avoid doing this as the lines are in place for the safety of everyone’s children. Please consider parking a little further away and walking to the school, or preferably don’t drive at all if you can possibly avoid it. Can we also request that idling engines should be avoided in the vicinity of school buildings. Turn it off, save fuel and clean up the air. Overgrowing undergrowth: In a number of locations around the ward, overgrowing vegetation makes walking on our pavements quite tricky. Now is a great time of year to tidy up your gardens and make sure overhanging vegetation is cut back. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. You can register using this link: http:// www.bristollibdems.org/efocus.

Plans to preserve hillfort to go ahead despite lottery disappointment Plans to protect Worlebury Camp hillfort in Weston-super-Mare will continue despite North Somerset Council’s bid for lottery funding being turned down.
We therefore need to address this problem by removing the diseased trees and we are currently preparing a works programme to do this.
The council applied to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in August for a £250,000 grant to help preserve the nationally significant Iron Age hillfort.
"We will also be revising our lottery application to have a second attempt next year."
The lottery fund have turned down the bid saying they were oversubscribed with applications and that other projects fitted their objectives more closely. "Not getting the lottery money is a huge disappointment to all those involved in the hillfort project, especially the volunteers of the Worlebury Hillfort Group and other local community groups, because it makes it harder for us to protect and preserve this scheduled monument," said Cllr Mike Solomon, the council's executive member for neighbourhoods and community services. "The hillfort still remains at risk so our plans have not changed, but this does mean that we must review our timetable and activities associated with the project. "Since we started looking at this project ash dieback disease has spread across the country, including the whole of North Somerset, and is affecting many trees on the hillfort.
26
Cllr John Crockford-Hawley, the council's heritage and regeneration champion, said: “Preserving archaeological sites such as Worlebury Camp hillfort is a really difficult activity. We have been helped by the efforts of our determined volunteers, but we need additional funds to put measures in place to protect the archaeology, as well as making the site more accessible for visitors and linking it closer to the town. "We are therefore determined to make another application to the lottery so we can ensure this valuable piece of our collective history can be preserved for future generations to explore and enjoy.” More information about the Worlebury Camp hillfort project can be found at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/hillfort and about ash dieback at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/ashdieback.

Quick Halloween Decorating Guide for the Entire House If you’re planning hard for a Halloween party at home, chances are you are searching for spooktacular ways to decorate your abode. Here is of fun and spooky decoration ideas to spruce up the front yard, porch, living room, kitchen or other sections of your home. Take on the front door and porch first Your front door and porch set up the first impression on guests, so adding some Halloween vibe to these areas is absolutely vital. One of the simplest ways is pasting some scary Halloween decals to the front door. Setting up a pumpkin patch alongside dried corn stalks at your grand entrance will also do miracles. You can paint pumpkins or make jack-o’-lanterns and place them on the front porch. You can use Halloween wreaths for decoration. Consider a DIY Halloween wreath to save time and money. We suggest making a creepy doll or twig wreath if you have less time. You can find some really exciting DIY Halloween wreaths here for inspiration. You can have creepy cobwebs, spiders, ravens, bats, witch-themed decorations etc., to haunt your porch.
Spook up your living room Living room is the main space where guests will be spending most of the time. You can quickly spook up the living room with Halloween-themed cushion covers, rugs or by draping the furniture in white bedsheets to make the room look abandoned and haunted.
Pumpkins relate to Halloween, decorating with them adds a seasonal flavour to your living room. You can choose to carve the pumpkins or use jack-o’-lanterns to your liking and theme. Another trick that’s catching up is the use of empty wine bottles. A bottle can be turned into a mummy or a monster for decoration.
Halloween wreaths, some nifty props from the pound store, spooky photo frames and scary-bleeding candles can add to the eerie. Don’t forget to add a ‘Happy Halloween’ garland for a complete look. 36
Invite bad spirits into your bedroom It is pretty exciting to decorate the bedroom for a horrifying experience. You can start by decorating with Halloween-themed bed sheets, cushions, pillows, and pumpkins of course. Wall decals and photo frames in line with the theme of the dead will spook up the bedroom for the All Hallows Eve. Put some cute or scary Halloween props on shelves – these could be spiders, webs, ravens etc Do not forget the lights. The spookiness can be easily intensified with the use of decorative lighting.
Add ghastly feel to the bathroom When decorating your home for Halloween, you can’t afford to miss out on your bathroom. It is the area where you can experiment and bring out your creativity. You can work on a witch-themed bathroom or set up a murder scene easily. Those with less time to spare can use Halloween-themed curtains, towels and floor mats to achieve the spookiness. A bubbly bathtub with colored water can be made possible. There are endless possibilities to use spiders, bugs, bats, and other Halloween props in the bathroom.
Get your kitchen ready for Halloween It’s time to bring out that collection of spooky cookware and display it creatively on the shelves and nooks of your kitchen. A dining table decked with themed tableware, candles, flowers, and spooky dishes will be an inviting centerpiece for guests. Halloween-themed dish towel to wipe plates and gut-wrenching food to send shivers down your guests’ spine will add grim to the ghastly presentation.
Don’t hesitate to display your creativity outdoors Turning plain white sheets into hanging ghosts is also a quick and inexpensive way to set up a hostel of ghosts in the backyard. A witch-themed scene or some crafty take with pallet wood can make an attractive addition too. The trees and plants in the garden are readymade props you can use in Halloween decorations. Simply putting large eyes to a tree or a shrub can do a fancy trick to scare the kids. A signboard reading danger and fright at the front gate or on the fence is a done deal. Have a ghoulish Halloween folks.... 37

Bristol production studio sells hit comedy animation to leading USA networks Bristol independent production company Wildseed Studios has agreed a deal that will see its hit comedy animation about the trials and tribulations of UK secondary school life air on two of the USA's biggest networks. Narrated by Kaiser Chiefs frontman and The Voice UK judge Ricky Wilson and starring Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls), Dodo will be available to view on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2022. The 20-episode series, originally commissioned by Sky Kids and produced by BAFTA-winning, Bristol-based Wildseed Studios, is a funny, relatable and heart-warming portrayal of everyday school life in the UK as experienced by 11 year-old Joe Connolly, voiced by Dylan Llewellyn. The series is based on multi-award-winning film and YouTube hit Not The End of the World, by British creator and series director Jack Bennett, which he made while in his final year at the University of the West of England, where he was discovered by Wildseed. Much of the inspiration for the series comes from Jack's own time at Gordano School, Portishead, with one of the characters even named after one of his favourite teachers. The licensing deal with WarnerMedia Kids & Family, brokered by kids' and family entertainment distributor CAKE, will see Dodo hero Joe's very British adventures reach new audiences in the U.S. as he navigates the dramas and pitfalls of his first year at secondary school. With new situations and embarrassments around every corner, small events mean big drama for Joe, as he tries to fit in, make new friends, girlfriends and even loses his school trousers. But Joe has best friends Frisbo,
Pete and Lily at his side, helping him realise that each challenge is really not the end of the world as he triumphs over adversity and survives another school day. Wildseed Managing Director Miles Bullough said: "We are thrilled to be able to share our much-loved new comedy animation series Dodo with new audiences in the U.S. Very British in both its humour and its hero, we are confident Jack's characters and stories will resonate and amuse viewers in the US as it has done here in the UK." Dodo is produced by Helen Stern (Gumball) with the support of Ben Ward (Horrible Histories) on scripting and with executive guidance provided by Wildseed's Head of Kids and Animation Sarah Mattingley. The series was commissioned by Lucy Murphy, Director of Kids Content at Sky UK & Ireland, and Exec Produced for Sky by Estelle Hughes, Commissioning Editor, Sky Kids. Multi award-winning Wildseed Studios specialises in ideas that will appeal to audiences below 30 and in finding and nurturing new talent. Its Submissions Portal, inviting creators to submit a project in live action or animation, is open to receive submissions throughout October. The team will review all ideas and successful will receive up to £10K each to develop their idea with the support of the team at Wildseed Studios. Local Hospice Lottery Provides Crucial Funding For Specialist Nursing Care Charity Jessie May
As a safe and simple way to support charities, Local Hospice Lottery was founded to provide a ‘regular and reliable income’ to those dealing with life limiting illnesses across Essex. Eleven years later, the organisation expanded this to further to support hospice care areas across Great Britain. The Bristol based specialist palliative nursing care charity Jessie May is delighted to partner with local hospice lottery and deeply encourages the public to get involved. Jessie May provides specialist palliative and end of life care, supporting terminally ill children and their families across the South West, and heavily relies on donations to be able to do this. This is made possible with the support of players of the Local Hospice Lottery, in place to provide a valuable income stream for the charity. In 2020, for each £1 entry in the weekly draw, Local Hospice Lottery gave an average of 68p to hospice care. With the pandemic limiting income, it can be especially challenging to donate. With a minimum £1 entry fee and a chance to win prizes, the Local Hospice Lottery draw is a practical and considerate way to give back to those who need it most. 40
With the lottery’s rollover, Jessie May supporters are among those to win up to £25,000. “The Local Hospice Lottery has seen 31 players win 33 prizes since 2019, receiving £345 between them. A total of £2,361 has been raised for Jessie May so far. These vital donations have made sure Jessie May nurses can continue providing care for children and families in need of crucial support.” - Clare Pearce, Director of Funding explained. As of 7th October 2021, there are 406 active players, with 581 game numbers between them. With 200 cash prizes up for grabs every week, it is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to give to a charity who needs your support. You can find how to enter the lottery via the Local Hospice Lottery here https://www. localhospicelottery.org/how-to-play/, and for more information on Jessie May and the life changing work they do, head to their website at https://jessiemay.org.uk/

NEW SHOW HOME AVAILABLE TO VIEW AT THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
A brand new show home has been launched at The Chocolate Factory development in Greenbank where the next phase of 3- and 4bedroom homes are available to reserve. The three-bedroom show home, located on the newly created Carsons Road, will show house-hunters what they can expect from the forthcoming homes at the development. Fifty percent of the houses along Carsons Road are now under offer and there are only four houses left along this terrace available for occupation now. Mya Castillo, sales and marketing consultant for Generator South West, the developers behind The Chocolate Factory, said the new show home is an important milestone for the project. “This launch represents the third show home we have opened and demonstrates how far the project is moving month-by-month,” said Mya. “All the houses along Co-Operation Road are now occupied and we recently handed over the shared ownership apartments to Abri so the development is really starting to come alive. It was great to see all the new residents welcomed into the friendly community of Greenbank at one of the recent street parties. 42
“The new show home is the first house we have dressed that has a separate living area and kitchen diner with patio doors onto the garden. Purchasers so far have commented on the generous stairs and hallways, abundance of light throughout the property and good-sized bedrooms as well as the carports with electric charging points. Once again, we have worked with Main Interiors to bring this home to life. “It’s sometimes hard for buyers to envision what a new build development will be like so a show home, alongside our model and virtual reality model in the Visitor Centre are great tools to give buyers the confidence to buy off plan. Now that the new show home is ready we expect the remaining homes in this phase to sell quickly.” Having laid derelict for years, developers Generator South West are breathing new life into Greenbank and once complete The Chocolate Factory will boast apartments, family houses, a public landscaped square, café/bar, community hub, retail units, workspace and direct access to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path. Prices for the latest 3- and 4-bedroom homes on Carsons Road start at £435,000.

Bristol hoteliers reveal budget 2021 wish-list Extending the reduced VAT period and doing more to overcome a shortage of skilled workers top the wish-list of Bristol hoteliers ahead of this month’s budget. As the UK continues to face the financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, Chancellor Rishi Sunak will deliver his third budget on 27 October. In July 2020 the government announced a temporary 5% reduced rate of VAT for certain supplies relating to hospitality, hotel and holiday accommodation.
Mr Herzog said: “We hear every day that, all around the UK, some hotels, restaurants and bars are not opening fully because they simply don’t have the staff they need. Some are operating at only 75% capacity, or even less, so more needs to be done to support our industry. “A combination of the pandemic, which prompted many of our European workers to go back home, coupled with Brexit, which restricts their ability to return, has had a huge impact on staffing levels.
That rate was increased to 12.5% at the start of this month and will remain until 31 March 2022, but the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) want the VAT reduction to continue beyond that date.
“The Government has introduced temporary visas to help with the shortage of lorry drivers. We would really like to see the Chancellor announce something similar for the skilled workers we are now struggling to find, including chefs.
BHA Chairman Raphael Herzog said: “We really need this to be extended to help our businesses recover from the effects of all the lockdowns.
“Hotels are also struggling to find the waiters and housekeeping staff that they need in order to provide the standards of service that our customers expect.
“We fully support the new #VATsEnough campaign which is calling for the 12.5% VAT rate to be made permanent for the hospitality sector.
“Even where wages have increased by 20 percent or more, hotels are just not getting the applications they need for these roles.
“Although we had an exceptionally good summer, with all the uncertainty over foreign travel prompting a surge in staycations, we are still finding that companies are reluctant to organise large events and conferences at the moment, which is a significant source of income for us.” Many hotels are also continuing to suffer from a shortage of skilled workers. 44
“In addition, we’re still unsure about who is fighting our sector’s cause, as there is still no one as a Minister looking after the fourth largest income provider for the government, and one of the largest employers in the UK. “We would really like to see the Chancellor acknowledge just how hard the hospitality sector has been hit by the pandemic, and, given the significant contribution our businesses make to the national economy, we hope he will continue to provide us with the support we need to recover.”
