LOVE SAVES
TOMORROW Bristol’s biggest music festival Love Saves The Day, today launches its sustainability awareness campaign, ahead of its relocation to the iconic Ashton Court over the Queen’s Jubilee bank holiday weekend 2-3 June 2022.
With a city location, it is easy for attendees to use low-emission transport to get to site. Team Love, the organisers, have arranged a £2 return Love Bus from Bristol’s main train station, Temple Meads, which is carbon- balanced with ecolibrium and even ta kes attendees close to the after parties when This year, the festival will partner with Music the festival gates close. For those wanting a Declares Emergency alongside other leading completely emission-free journey, the festival festivals, using the No Music on a Dead encourages walking or cycling to the site and Planet pledge as a key communication point has a bike lock park located at Ashton Court for artists and attendees. Mansion car park. The week will kick off with a dive into the history and ecosystems which exist at the new location of Ashton Court, a site once popular with free-festivals of old, which has not seen a music festival since 2008. With an aim to raise awareness of the beautiful new location and encourage attendees to respect and protect it. The team will be sharing ways the festival has taken steps to try to ensure that partying and caring for our planet go hand-in-hand, inviting attendees to think about waste, food consumption, water usage and their day-to-day choices.

There are green options for travel for those commuting from outside Bristol, as the festival has partnered with Big Green Coach. Other initiatives include banning single use plastic from the site, as part of Drastic on Plastic campaign, which includes glitter attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles to the festival, and there will be metal ones available to purchase. When it comes to festival fashion choices, Love Saves the Day have recently launched their conscious fashion campaign, encouraging those attending to support local designers and buy sustainable festival outfits. Festival goers are encouraged to make their own, purchase second-hand (from thrift and charity shops) or even repurpose old outfits and clothes-swap with friends.
There are more veggie and vegan food traders this year, and compost toilets accounting for two thirds of toilets on the site. They are also introducing PEEQUAL this year, a safe and sustainable urinal for women. Made from recycled ocean plastic, it is a queue-busting gender equaliser and uses 98% less co2 than portable toilets- and was designed by University of Bristol graduates. Pauline Bourdon, Sustainability Manager at Team Love, (organisers of Love Saves The Day) explains: “The festival is our love letter to music, its communities, and the planet. We believe we have a responsibility to inspire awareness and changes in the local area, emphasising the duty of care towards future generations and communities, to make sure they can also experience the benefits of live music, arts, and culture for years to come.” Organisers have also signed the Vision: 2025 Pledge - an event industry initiative that aims to inspire events to measure their environmental impacts and reduce them by 50% by the year 2025 and are aiming for Net Zero by 2030. 5

THE CINEMA REVIEW MOVIE REVIEW THE QUIET GIRL Ireland 1981. Nine-year-old Cáit counters the adversities of a life in poverty on the countryside with a quiet retreat into her own world: She is a sensitive observer of the beauty of the small things around her. When she is sent from her overwhelmed, often emotionally cold extended family to an older, childless couple during the holidays, she experiences deep affection, perhaps for the first time ever.
BENEDICTION
A complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War, Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden / Peter Capaldi), a soldier decorated for his bravery on the battlefield, became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service. Legendary still today for his poetry inspired by his experiences on the Western Front, he was adored by both members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and theatre scene. He embarked on affairs with several high-profile men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality, whilst at the same time, broken by the horrors of war, his life’s journey became a quest for salvation.

Bristol - Endorse the Plant Based Treaty - Before it's Too Late A petition has been launched in Bristol to urge the Council to endorse the Plant Based Treaty and adopt more plant based options wherever possible, in response to the growing climate crisis. Since the UN climate report in 2006 highlighted animal agriculture as a leading cause of global emissions and environmental destruction, calls have been growing worldwide to adopt a plant based strategy for food systems and production in order to meet net zero targets. ‘Bristol already leads the way in the world when it comes to plant based options’ says Tim Barford of VegfestUK, one of the Bristol based businesses behind the petition. ‘We have 3 vegan MP’s, a vegan deputy mayor and a big Green representation in the area, as well as cross party support, national campaigns groups, a number of vegan friendly businesses, and grassroots organisations all pushing to get plant based options as the default wherever possible. Now we are asking the people of Bristol to sign this petition to ensure a debate takes place within Council to adopt the Plant Based Treaty. We need to act - and this is one way we can really help.’ The petition states
‘3,500 signatures are required to trigger a Council debate and the organisers are confident of achieving that figure and seeing Bristol adopt the Plant Based Treaty. ‘We have to act’’ adds Barford ‘‘ and that time is now, not some time in the future. It’s our combined responsibility to take care of the planet for future generations, and halting the destruction that animal agriculture causes is a massive step towards not only climate justice but also food justice and animal justice. Together we can do this but we don’t have the luxury of leaving it much longer. If Bristol adopts the Plant Based Treaty we become the first city in the UK to do so and that could trigger a whole run. Imagine that. The UK adopting plant based food system enables an incredible transformation on so many levels. It’s within our power still but that window is closing.’ The petition is live, and sees an official launch on Sunday May 22nd between 11am and 1pm at College Green Bristol with a number of speakers and supporters gathering to give the petition its official lift off, including Deputy Lord Mayor Andrew Varney & Green Party councillor Martin Fodor. The petition is available both to sign manually and also online, and is backed by a number of individuals, businesses and local groups including Bristol Animal Save Animal Rebellion and Viva!
‘‘Animal agriculture is a key driver of deforestation, accelerating greenhouse gases, land-use change, ocean dead zones, and water and air pollution. Cuts to methane emissions are our best hope of keeping 1.5 alive over the coming decades, due to a third of methane emissions coming from animal farming. Joining towns and cities across the UK in endorsing the Plant Based Treaty will help pressure national governments to 1. Halt the global expansion of deforestation attributed to animal agriculture. 2. Incentivise a plant-based food system. 3. Encourage public information campaigns about the benefits of plant-based foods. 4. Free up land to rewild and reforest the Earth. 5. Allow a just transition to more sustainable jobs, healthier people and a healthier planet.’’ Bristol residents can sign the petition here https://bit.ly/3Fxktpu To find out more about the Plant Based Treaty, visit the website https://plantbasedtreaty.org 12

Bristol Craft Beer Festival proudly presents Brave Noise Brew at this years festival
A global collaborative effort to provide inclusive and safe environments for women, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ throughout the beer industry A celebration of brewing culture in Bristol and beyond, the Bristol Craft Beer Festival 2022 returns on 10-11 June 2022, and will feature a huge variety of the world’s finest beers. One such beer, Brave Noise, a pale ale, is a global collaborative effort from 262 breweries across the globe to provide inclusive and safe environments for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ throughout the beer industry. Bristol’s Lost and Grounded is one of the 262 breweries involved and will be providing the brew for the festival in June. Lost and Grounded founder Annie Clements has been pivotal in the brewery producing Brave Noise Brew. At the heart of Lost and Grounded’s key values is inclusivity and supporting the development and education of their team. The Brave Noise collaboration was inspired by those who have shared stories about gender discrimination, racism, sexual assault, and sexual harassment within the brewing industry. Over 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced some kind of sexual harassment in public.
14
By joining the Brave Noise initiative, alcohol-related companies must post their code of conduct publicly, commit to the long-term work for safe and discrimination-free workspaces, and donate a majority of proceeds to a non-profit that reflects the Brave Noise mission. Bristol Craft Beer Festival stands firm and supports this important movement for change, diversity, and inclusiveness. Beer has always been a great unifier, and Brave Noise Brew is helping bring the industry together, facilitating conversations about how as a whole the community can do better, and create inclusive and safe environments for staff and consumers. Festival fans and craft beer lovers will have the chance to bask in the Bristol sunshine while enjoying this delicious brew. Greg Wells, Bristol Craft Beer Festival founder says of Brave Noise: “We have been so inspired by the Brave Noise Organisation and their important message advocating for safe spaces and inclusive environments by requesting breweries be transparent with their policies and commit to long-term changes.
“We will be promoting this message of inclusivity to all 30,000+ attendees coming to all our We Are Beer festivals across the UK this summer, with the US Brave Noise team even joining us on site at London Craft Beer Festival's 10-year anniversary. “We are really pleased to welcome the brew to this year’s Bristol Craft Beer Festival and are excited to see Bristol’s Lost and Grounded get involved in this important movement and encourage the industry to commit to change for the better.”
Annie Clements, Lost and Grounded founder says:
Brienne Allan, Co-Founder Brave Noise, Brewer and Co-Founder of Sacred Profane Brewery and Tankpub said:
“The beer industry can be a male-dominated world, with few protections for female brewers and workers. So, it was a no-brainer for us to get involved with Brave Noise Brew.
“Accountability, transparency and action. That’s what we want to see through the Brave Noise collab and initiative. It’s great to see We Are Beer festivals stepping up to create safe
Change can’t happen overnight, but initiatives like this one are monumental for steering the conversation and change in a promising direction, and here at Lost and Grounded, we are truly committed to making this industry inclusive for all.
spaces at their upcoming events. We need to see more folks around the globe taking the “We include a QR code on our beer that links initiative to create safe spaces at fests.” to our statement of values and code of conduct, plus we donate to an organisation that supports the mission of the collaboration.”www.bristolcraftbeerfestival. co.uk/tickets/

MARKETING YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY (PART 1)
Your success or failure as a landlord, starts with your ability to market your property and to attract and to keep tenants. You could have the most wonderful property but, if nobody knows about it, or it doesn’t attract tenants who move in and pay rent – then it’s not going to be a good investment. Here, in the first part of our series on marketing your rental property, we will look at the property and the listing itself, in terms of its design. The property Let’s start with the property, a place where it can all go so wrong, so quickly. A friend of mine, in the industry, once said to a fellow investor, who had massively overspent on a project, on items which would show little “real value” to either the tenants or his bank balance “..what is this HMO for you..?” This summed up the situation for me perfectly and I think back to that comment often. Unlike your own home, your investment property will not be lived in by you. This can be a tough idea to get your head around, especially for new investors because we often want to inject something of ourselves and our personalities into our homes. However, investment properties, which are going to be rented out to tenants, are the opposite – leave the “you” out of them.
20
Design is an important consideration even in a buoyant market (like Bristol) because presenting a property correctly to the market, will ensure that it rents at the correct and desired level. Let’s take a look at some of the things tenants do appreciate and that will differentiate in a positive way: Good design. Well-designed properties, which accentuate the available space have always been well received. As more and more tenants are working from home, or partially from home, the ability to have a desk and a space to work from, is being requested more and more. Design that can be flexible and provide quiet areas or areas conducive to home working and zoom/team meetings etc. are popular, and areas which could be used for exercise or “home gyms” are popular too. Wifi. This was a tricky one during lockdown when there was an increase in people working from home. A good connection is the number one most important thing for some tenants and right at the top of their “want list.”
Safety and security. Never forget that your rental property is your tenants’ home and, like everyone else, your tenants want to feel safe and secure in their home. Sturdy locks on windows and doors and a good inspection routine will go a long way to ensuring this. Point this out to prospective tenants at the viewing and make sure that they know they can always report issues to you and that during inspections you will be completing a full house check. Outdoor space. This became hugely important during lockdown and still is! An “un-fussy” outdoor space is very desirable. For family let’s, it’s often right at the top of the list for tenants. Don’t overlook the outdoor areas, with a little work and planning, they can become lovely spaces, which add so much value. Storage space. Having sufficient storage space is really important in any home, especially for those looking to rent long-term. Ample storage space means tenants don’t need to worry about storing their belongings elsewhere and won’t have to live in a cluttered space. Lighting. The best kind of lighting, is obviously natural lighting and designs which use this to good effect, work really well. Thinking about what different areas will be used for and planning spaces accordingly is always a great idea. Over the past few years, lighting has moved from pure functionality into the design space and there are some superb options available now. The advert In terms of the design of the listing, it is often easier to talk about “what went wrong” because we have all seen so many bad ads! When you boil it down, the design of the ad amounts to three things:
Pictures. These are super important because if these are bad, prospective tenants will move on and may never read the ad at all. They don’t have to be professional photos (although this does help and is always money well spent) but a good, well-lit photo, which is taken to show the best angles and features of a property is a must. Also, a dressed property makes a wealth of difference – just be careful with your design, make it unfussy and stylish, remember that you are selling more than a property, you are selling a lifestyle; a coffee tray on the side of a well-made bed with a coordinated throw, can go a long way! The wording. Remember that you are selling the vacancy. If you don’t sound enthusiastic about it, then how can you expect anyone else to! You would not believe how many dreary ads I have read, and this always makes me roll my eyes. Make the tone upbeat, sound enthusiastic and always remember to point out the best parts of the property – including those mentioned above. Information. Transport links; local amenities; schools; employers; shops; local hospitality; hospitals and landmarks. These are all things that prospective tenants want to know, listing distances to these is really useful and, if a property is in a sought-after location, near a local landmark or known for something in particular, then mention it in the ad. These are all selling points for prospective tenants! We have honed our marketing over many years and with our own properties and those of the Landlords for whom we manage. Next time we will be looking at other aspects of marketing your rental properties, including which portals to use.

Bus lane enforcement begins
Drivers who abuse bus lanes in Weston will soon face a fine. Two sections of road designated as bus lanes at the existing Queensway Bus Terminus at Commercial Way/Queensway Commercial Centre in Worle and the new Bus Interchange at Alexandra Parade/ Regent Street in Weston will be enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems from Monday 23 May. The two sites require the control of unauthorised vehicles in order to operate safely and free from congestion. These areas generally experience high pedestrian movements and unlawful use of the infrastructure has had a detrimental effect on public transport operators journey times and service provisions at key times. Enforcement of bus lane infrastructure is anticipated to have the following additional benefits: •
More free-flowing public transport due to fewer illegally parked or queuing vehicles
•
Reduced journey times for public transport encouraging more people to use services
•
Safer roads with less accidents Improved highway management
Consistency of approach with neighbouring authorities. 22
Cllr Steve Hogg, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for transport and highways said: "Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems offer an unattended and efficient way of monitoring any abuse on our road network. Following initial installation, ANPR systems have low running/maintenance costs with a back-office system that becomes active and generates a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) only when a breach is identified. We would urge drivers to respect our bus lanes and not abuse them. Otherwise you will be facing a fine." A PCN is £60 or £30 if paid within 14 days. From Monday 6 June, the revenue collected from the breaches of the traffic order will cover the costs associated with running the system and any surplus will be made available to road and transport improvements. If the enforcement process works well, the system may be rolled out to other locations. The scheme will operate under a short warning notice period for first time offenders only, whilst the new regulations come into effect. The works will cost around £177,000 and is being carried out by Yunex (Part of Siemens), Centregreat and Milestone Infrastructure Services.

3 Best playgrounds in Bristol Playgrounds are worth their weight in gold when it comes to entertaining children for free in the city. Did you know Bristol has over 400 parks and gardens, including some excellent play areas for kids all over the city. So whether you’re looking for a bit of respite on a jam-packed sightseeing trip, or somewhere new for the kids to burn off some of that energy, here’s a list of the 3 best adventure playgrounds in Bristol. St Andrews Park, Bristol Landscaped Victorian St Andrews Park, fringed by pretty houses, is the place to go on a hot, sunny summer’s day in Bristol, thanks largely to its huge paddling pool. This fenced-in mini-lido heaves with splashing children as soon as school is out if there’s a hot fiery object in the English sky. There’s a lovely play area with a large sand pit (bring a bucket and spade!) and all the usual favourites. Refreshment-wise, a little kiosk sits at the centre of the park selling great coffee and ice creams with a few tables and chairs dotted around, although sadly it’s future is currently in the balance. Address: BS6 5AX Where to park: free on-street parking on roads around the park.
Page Park, Downend, Bristol This large Victorian park, in the Staple Hill area (about 5 miles north east of Bristol city centre), has two kids’ play areas (one natural wood, the other containing your classic kids’ playground equipment), a sensory garden, cricket pitch, tennis courts, bandstand and an aviary. At it’s heart, an impressive clock tower dating back to 1910 – whose beams provide an extra place for hide and seek – chimes every quarter of an hour. It’s a pretty park, with scooter/buggy-friendly pathways, the Bean Tree Cafe for a caffeine and cake fix and just 400 metres from the Bristol to Bath cycle path (which exits onto Signal Road). Address: The park is enclosed by Broad Street, Hill House Road, Park Road and South View. Parking: find free parking on a nearby road Arnos Court Park, Brislington, Bristol This park sits just down the road from Arnos Vale Cemetery and you can either stroll along the pavement between the two, or climb the hill to a gate which connects the park with the the cemetery’s woods (a much nicer route in my opinion with views to boot). At the bottom of the hill, close to Bath Road, is where you’ll find the kids’ playground with its zip line, slide, swings, dish spinner and play sand. Address: Hampstead Rd, BS4 3HJ Parking: If you’re exploring Arnos Vale cemetery as well, there are about 30 car park spaces there, otherwise you should find a space on nearby side streets.

West of England Combined Authority has failed
Our greenbelt at risk: Once again, the West of England Combined Authority has failed to produce a Spatial Development Strategy, a document that is supposed to agree future housing targets in our region. Without such a strategy in place, the presumption is in favour of development, which means developers have even more of an upper hand to force through unsuitable or undesirable developments. Local residents may have seen the proposals by Bellway Homes for up to 555 new housing units on Brislington greenbelt, a development we do not support but which is now more difficult to stop. The land in question was originally earmarked for future development in the previous Spatial Development Strategy, but that was chucked out by central government inspectors as ‘not fit for purpose’. Since then, we have had the declaration of a climate emergency and an ecological emergency, an opposition motion at City Hall has granted additional protection to greenbelt land and the West of England Mayor, Dan Norris, has stated his commitment to protecting our greenbelt. However, without an SDS, this may have little impact on developers.
26
We recognize the need to provide more homes, but there are plenty of brown field sites in the city which should be prioritised. Indeed, in Brislington West we are fully supportive of developments at Flowers Hill, Paintworks, John Peer and City Motors, which will deliver hundreds of new homes in the next few years, all on brownfield sites. Community Infrastructure Levy projects: Residents may be interested in proposals for spending CIL funding in Brislington West. There are several projects this year, including: •
Sandy Park Road. A new sign to promote our local shopping area, replacing the tatty, out-of-date sign on the Tram Depot.
•
West Town Lane. The zebra crossing has a visibility issue and a local resident was recently knocked down. Better lighting and signage should help.
•
Spark Evans Bridge. In January, the Council included this bridge in a list for repair and refurbishment. By April, it had inexplicably been removed from the list! The project aims to restore the bridge to its former glory.
•
Eton Road, a School Street to improve child safety and promote active travel to and from school.
•
Hungerford Road. A new skatepark on Hungerford Open Space.
•
Arnos Court Park. A bog garden in the derelict ornamental pond.
•
Arnos Court Park. An Outdoor gym.
•
Arnos Court Park. Painted children’s games such as hopscotch on the redundant tarmac next to the children’s play area.
•
Arnos Court Park. Further landscape and biodiversity enhancements including the provision of benches to enhance the recreational value of the park.
•
Wick Road/Newbridge Road. A joint bid with Brislington East for safety improvement along this stretch of road.
Greater Brislington Together will be organising a community meeting soon, where the various bids can be discussed in more detail and community priorities selected. Unfortunately, there won’t be funding for everything.
Fallen tree removal: We are pleased that a large tree, which fell during the winter storms and was partially blocking a key active travel corridor from Brislington into the city centre, has finally been cleared away. The council were initially reluctant to do the work on the riverside path near Totterdown Bridge, but after a bit of persistence on our part, we persuaded them to prioritise its removal. If you are in the area, please take care as there is still a remaining stump and mound in the path, which will need to be rectified in due course. In the meantime, the mound has been sprayed with fluorescent paint to ensure its visibility. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. Bristol Art Club project
launches to promote mental wellbeing Bristol’s Art Club invites residents across the city to get creative and submit photographs of their artworks to an online gallery showcasing local talent. The project is inspired by the Grayson’s Art Club exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, which has been visited by over 125,000 people since opening in December. Photographs of selected artworks will also be displayed on screens in the museum and on social media to celebrate the creativity of Bristol’s citizens.
A number of open access creative wellbeing sessions will be delivered in local communities including St Pauls, Barton Hill, Knowle West and Southmead. Further information on these workshops will be released in the coming weeks.
Grayson Perry said: “The pandemic has had a profound impact on our mental health. It doesn’t matter if you are a professional or an amateur, art is good for you, and it can be an amazing tool for supporting mental wellbeing. I want to encourage Bristolians to start sketching, painting, sewing, sculpting, or even just tinkering. The benefits are enormous.”
Councillor Ellie King, Cabinet Lead for Public Health, Communities and Bristol One City, said: “This week is Creativity and Wellbeing Week which gives us the perfect opportunity to start talking about our mental health. We all know that arts and culture have a positive impact on wellbeing which is also evidenced by the World Health Organisation. I am looking forward to seeing people’s submissions in the online gallery, it will be a fantastic showcase of people’s creativity and I’m sure it will highlight some local talent. I’m so pleased that Public Health can fund an initiative like this which will play a part in the city’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Alongside Bristol’s Art Club, a programme of free creative wellbeing activities will be delivered across the city including monthly art workshops at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, a series of family activities and a programme of arts on referral workshops.
Bristol’s Art Club and the city-wide arts and health programme has been funded by Public Health and will be delivered in partnership with arts and health partners across the city including Creative Shift CIC and Southmead Development Trust.
28
Bristol’s Art Club is open for submissions until 4 September. The online gallery and submission form can be found at brism.us/artclub.

HEART HEROES HOSTS
FAMILY FUN DAY Local charity Heart Heroes held a family fun day recently where its ‘Heart Families’ came together to share similar experiences of living with heart conditions. The charity, set up by local woman Kelly Cornish, supports children aged 0-16 with heart disease and helps affected families meet others in similar situations. The event was held at Bristol Memorial Woodlands, near Alveston, where guests enjoyed arts and crafts, refreshments and games all in the grounds of the 100-acre woodlands and reception rooms. Kelly Cornish said: “We were delighted with the outcome of our latest Heart Families fun day which was attended by lots of local children and their families. “The whole aim of our charity is to create links between people going through the same experiences. Dealing with a child with a serious illness can be very lonely, isolating and daunting so sharing thoughts and feelings with others in the same position is incredibly helpful for many. “We provide services and socialising opportunities to facilitate these relationships and it also gives the children some fantastic experiences to enjoy with their peers. 30
“We’d like to extend a big thank you to the team at Bristol Memorial Woodlands for providing the use of their beautiful grounds, it was a very special location to hold this event and our families enjoyed exploring the ancient dew pond, woodlands and vast outdoor space to run around in.” One family said: “Lovely event! It was our first one with Heart Heroes and our little ones loved it. Nice to meet local families that get it.” Heart Heroes was founded by Kelly in 2018 after she lost a family member to congenital heart disease at the age of 10 months. The charity works closely with Bristol Children’s Hospital with the lead ward sister for the cardiac Dolphin ward acting as Patron.
Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre woodland site primarily offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials where trees and wild flowers are planted around plots to create a nature reserve for future generations. Also encompassing a chapel and reception rooms, the site, the land and grounds are all managed by a charitable trust and it provides families with a location for unhurried, bespoke funerals for loved ones.
If you would like to hold a charity event at the venue please get in touch by calling the office on 01454 414999 or emailing admin@memorialwoodlands.com For more information about the charity visit www.heartheroes.co.uk

ST GEORGE NURSERY CELEBRATES GOOD OFSTED RATING A St George nursery is celebrating a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating following its latest inspection by the governing body. Mama Bear’s Day Nursery & Pre-School at Whiteway Road, Speedwell, as well as the dedicated baby unit located two doors down, was rated ‘Good’ in all areas including management, teaching, personal development, behaviour, welfare and outcomes for children. The nursery has been praised for its safe and secure environment, its broad and varied curriculum and the respected team of managers who are good role models. The baby unit was praised for its consistent and well organised daily routines which the children are familiar with, the strong emotional attachments evident between children and staff and the encouragement of children’s curiosity. Mama Bear’s Whiteway Road Nursery Manager, Cherelle Craig, said: “We are thrilled to have received a Good Ofsted rating and very proud to receive such a glowing report for both the nursery and pre-school and the baby unit. “It seems that the inspector and our parents were particularly pleased with how we handled COVID-19 procedures, including our communication with families during that time and the emotional support we have offered to children as they have settled back into nursery life following restrictions. 32
“It was also encouraging to hear positive feedback on our staff development, which is something we are particularly passionate about. “This latest report paired with our DayNurseries.co.uk review score of 9.5, given by parents who have used our setting, is a fantastic testament to the team and how we ensure the best outcomes for each child.” The nursery comprises a pre-school for two, three and four-year-olds plus a dedicated baby unit for under twos, two doors down. Both settings offer a stimulating, safe and welcoming environment with resources dedicated to their age group. The pre-school garden is particularly impressive and a perfect environment for the children to explore the outside environment and develop gross motor skills. Mama Bear’s Day Nurseries provide care for children from three months to five years. There are now 24 settings across Somerset, Bristol and Devon. 24 - 29 May From May 24 to May 30, National Epilepsy Week will be taking place to raise awareness for those affected by epilepsy, what epilepsy is, who’s affected and what can be done to help those who suffer from this condition. What is epilepsy? Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and causes recurring seizures or fits in people. Due to an uncontrolled increase of excess electrical activity in the brain interfering with the normal functions, this causes a short interruption to the relay of messages in the brain. Who’s affected? Approximately 500,000 people in the England are diagnosed with epilepsy, affecting people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. 46
What can be done to help? Learning to recognise the symptoms of a seizure is a great place to start helping those affected, as well as knowing what to do when a seizure occurs to minimise the harm done to both the person and those around them. You can also look into lobbying for more support for those affected by epilepsy, so they can get the treatment and care they deserve. All in all, epilepsy is a condition affecting more people than you might think, and by knowing the early warning signs and what to do when a seizure occurs can make a big difference helping those affected by the chronic condition.

Invatech Health announces the sale of Atlas Health technology pioneer Invatech Health has announced the sale of its care homes electronic medication administration record (eMAR) system, Atlas. The ground-breaking software has been bought for an undisclosed sum by care home management specialists Person Centred Software (PCS). The acquisition marks the end of a 20 year journey for Invatech Health CEO Tariq Muhammad, a pharmacist who started working on care homes back in 2002 and first conceived the concept of electronic medicines system for care homes in 2006. Following the transition of Atlas to new ownership, Bristol-based Invatech Health will concentrate solely on further growth of Titan, its cutting-edge software for pharmacy management. Today Titan is making similar waves in the rapidly developing pharmacy sector to those made by Atlas in the management of care home medication at the start of the century. Mr Muhammad said he was proud to see his purpose-driven business given an opportunity for further progress. “It’s a bit like being at a child’s graduation,” he said. “I set up Atlas to tackle a dire need in the care homes sector for a system which could prevent incorrect dosing, mismanagement of prescriptions and administration errors of important medication. “For me Atlas has always been about the end user – care homes and their residents. It’s taken a long time to perfect it and, as with any business, there have been bumps along the way. Now I’ve taken Atlas as far as I can, so I’m delighted to see it under new ownership, with a company whose values I share and who can allow it to reach greater heights as part of a new ecosystem. “It’s a clean acquisition, with a complete continuation in staffing and functionality, so it couldn’t have happened any better for all involved. “My management team and I will oversee the transition over coming months to ensure Atlas is properly bedded in. We can then focus all our efforts into the exciting development of Titan – a similarly cutting-edge product and the equivalent in the rapidly-growing pharmacy sector. “The potential for Titan is massive. So while I’ve seen one brainchild flying the nest today, there’s another one growing rapidly which needs our full attention.” 48
PCS, which is based in Guildford in Surrey, confirmed that as part of the acquisition it would retain Atlas’s full team of 15 staff, all of whom work remotely. Atlas is currently deployed in 700 care homes across the UK, and serviced by a 165-strong network of independent pharmacies, now has the opportunity to be further implemented across PCS’s client base of 3,000 care homes in total. Jonathan Papworth, co-founder of PCS, said: “I have been impressed with the proven capabilities built into Atlas, alongside the unique level of integration across GPs and pharmacies. “Atlas is joining our family of social care products to provide best-in-class clinical software for our global customers, from digital care records to medication management and beyond. “This will provide our joint customers with the opportunity to have full interoperability across our products, as well as the most comprehensive and capable integration with healthcare systems.” The acquisition has been negotiated and facilitated in-house between at Invatech Health and PCS with support from accountants GS Verde and legal firm GL Law, both based in Bristol. Mr Muhammad said: “This deal has come at the right time for both parties and, as such, the process has been quick, and straightforward. “The relationship between both parties is strong and we’re looking forward bringing the benefits of our joined expertise to PCS’s existing and future customers.”
