Garden landscaping ideas how to plan and create your perfect garden Re-designing your garden is an exciting prospect. Do you wish you had somewhere to sit, relax, entertain or let the children play? Maybe you are just a little bored and want a garden design that is more colourful, varied or maintenance friendly. Garden landscaping is the ideal way to craft an attractive space to grow plants that give you a beautiful environment and design a practical layout that allows you to use your garden how you want. But where do you start? Take a look at our answers to common garden landscaping questions; whether its planning and budgeting, resourcing and building or aesthetic planting, our guide holds the key to the garden landscaping design of your dreams. How do I start my garden design? Landscaping ideas start with good research. Take inspiration by visiting garden centres, public gardens, annual garden shows, even other people’s houses to get a feel of what is to your taste. Take into account your garden size and think about what you need your garden to do for you. Then, take to the drawing board to sketch your ideas and make mood boards from magazines and Pinterest of your dream garden landscape.
Elements to consider when first planning garden landscaping ideas Walls and boundaries Hedges and fences Paths and patios
Next consider your plot. Look at the size and shape and take into consideration the direction if faces, the style of your house it will be framing and the surrounding area. Achieving balance is a strong aspect of good garden design; pay equal attention to all areas and remember that plants and shrubs will change size and shape throughout the seasons. Do you prefer formal or informal gardens? Formal gardens tend to be tidy and geometric with lots of straight lines and clipped hedges, whereas informal gardens are made up of organic curves and planting is much more relaxed. Soften a sloping garden with grass steps If your garden is on different levels but you’re not keen on hard landscaping severely breaking things up take inspiration from this garden we saw in North Bristol. Instead of incorporating stone steps, They used grass treads, integrating them into the existing lawn to connect the lower patio to the small sun terrace above. Creating a softer approach to the flow, seamlessly journeying from one space to the other. Pave the way The trend for creating garden zones is hugely popular, meaning the need for having a garden path is great. A link that unites the different areas is not only highly practical, it can also be visually appealing as this example demonstrates. Without a pathway you’ll soon find that you tread an unsightly channel into the lawn – which will ruin all your hard work with the overall garden aesthetic.
Zoning areas (dining, playing, shading)
While the best time to redesign your space is in winter when plants are dormant, looking at it in summer gives you the chance to really understand how you use the space. Or if you just want to add new surfaces, you can do so now and reap the rewards this summer.
Planting: trees, shrubs, pots
Either way enjoys your garden

Kate Rusby, Jon Boden & Kitty Macfarlane headline a stellar line-up for Bristol Folk Festival Bristol Folk Festival returns with a stellar line-up of British and international artists across the city for three days over May Day weekend (Fri 29 April – Sun 1 May).
Dr Anna Rutherford Creative Director of Bristol Folk Festival said:
‘First lady of Folk’ Kate Rusby headlines the opening night with a special opening concert at Clifton Cathedral, featuring O’Hooley & Tidow on Friday 29 April. Kate Rusby is celebrating 30 years as a professional musician, and will appear with her virtuoso band, hand-picked from the UK’s finest musicians.
“Folk music connects, tells our stories and binds us. After two tough years, we’re honoured to bring Kate Rusby and Jon Boden, the queen and king of UK folk, and a whole host of artists to a resurgent festival city and to be part of the recovery of live music. The calibre of artists programmed across Mayday weekend is astonishing – book for an old favourite, or better still, take a chance on something new!”
“Everybody loves and respects Kate Rusby, not just for her lovely voice, but for the way that she has moved folk forward while remaining true to tradition…” The Sunday Times
Day and Night passes are available for each day of the festival. Weekend Passes allow audiences full access to three days of music a nd are now the only tickets left for the opening night concert. Original tickets stand.
Joining Kate Rusby on the opening night are O’Hooley & Tidow. Characterised by strong harmonies and humorous, heart-touching tales of the exceptional and everyday, the duo are often cited as ‘England’s answer to the McGarrigles’ (Guardian) and are widely recognised as ‘one of British folk music’s mightiest combinations’ (Mojo).
News of a late-night hub, special interviews, sessions and dance across the city will be released shortly.
The duo gained widespread recognition for their song ‘Gentleman Jack’, the closing theme to Sally Wainwright’s BBC/HBO drama series of the same name. Jon Boden, the first knight to Rusby’s first lady, headlines the festival on Saturday 30 April at St George’s Bristol. More widely recognised as the frontman of Bellowhead, a game-changing eleven-piece, and winners of eight BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Jon Boden performs with his new group The Remnant Strings, with support from Senegalese artist Amadou Diagne. Medicine Creek featuring Nuala Honan, and Granny’s Attic also join the Saturday line-up. Kitty Macfarlane closes the festival on Sunday 1 May with an eye to the future. Recognised as a tonic for the times we’re in, and fast building a cross-generational fanbase, Kitty has been described as ‘remarkably accomplished’ by the Guardian, ‘ startlingly poetic’ by the Observer 6and counts Iggy Pop among her fans. Not bad for a lass from Somerset.

WALK
THIS MAY
It’s time to get walkin for National Walking Month! 18
MAY IN NATIONAL WALKING MONTH You may not realise it, but May is National Walking Month and now the evenings are lighter for longer, this makes it the perfect time to get outside, and get walking. Walking has a whole host of different health benefits that you can use to motivate you to introduce walking into your daily lives.
WALKING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART Your heart is responsible for pumping the oxygen and blood around your body and keeping all the other organs working. So we think you’ll agree that it’s important to keep it in tip top condition! Walking not only strengthens your heart but reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes. In fact a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day is said to reduce your risk of a stroke by 27%. If this wasn’t enough, it also reduces bad levels of cholesterol and increases the levels of good cholesterol too!
YOU CAN LOWER YOUR RISK OF DEMENTIA An older person who walks six or more miles a week is less likely to have problems such as dementia. This is because walking has been proven to prevent your brain from shrinking.
WALKING GIVES YOU ENERGY There are times when you feel more lethargic than others, and if you find yourself in this zone then a walk could do you good. It boosts your circulation and increases the oxygen supply is around your body, which in turn will keep you feeling alert and awake.
IT’S A FULL BODY WORKOUT Many muscles in your body are activated during walking including; calves, glutes, hamstrings, quads and abdominals, so give it a try and give your legs, bums and tum a workout.
WALKING HELPS YOU TO LOSE WEIGHT
INCREASE YOUR VITAMIN D INTAKE
If you are new to exercise, or maybe trying to lose weight gradually in order to keep it off, then walking is a great form of exercise for you. If you walk at around 2mph for 30 minutes then you will burn around 75 calories, and if you increase this to 4mph this will rise to around 150 calories. 20 minutes of walking a day will burn an incredible 7lbs of body fat a year.
Here in the UK there are lots of people who are deficient in Vitamin D, the best way to increase your levels of Vitamin D is to get outside in the sunshine. Vitamin D is good for your bone health, as well as your immune system, which is why it is important to try and increase the levels in your body.
ng
WALKING MAKES YOU HAPPY In the same way walking can help you feel energised, it is also great for making you feel happy. A brisk walk can be just as beneficial as taking an antidepressant, and can be a great helping hand if you are suffering from depression, anxiety or feeling stressed. These are just some of the reasons why you should try to work in more walking to your daily routine. Whether you walk at lunchtime, or start your day with a walk, why not try it and feel the benefits for yourself.

NURSERY CHILDREN EGG-STATIC WITH VISIT FROM THE EASTER BUNNY
Nursery children at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery & Pre-School were delighted with a surprise visit from a very special guest recently. The Easter Bunny made an appearance at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery & Pre-School's across Bristol to surprise the children and staff. All children received a chocolate egg to take home and the staff also received a chocolate treat. Mama Bear’s owner Tony Driffield said: “It was wonderful to surprise the children with a visit from the Easter Bunny, they absolutely loved seeing this larger-than-life character in their nursery environment and it really helped to bring to life all the Easter activities we have been doing with the children lately, from the painting and colouring to the pretend egg hunts and Easter messy play. “We also felt it was important to treat our lovely staff too as a thank you for all their hard work this term and beyond. It’s more important than ever to celebrate these happy occasions together and create memories for the children before they go off to school.” 22
The family-run Mama Bear’s Day Nurseries are aimed at providing children with their first vital level of education to give them a head-start when they start at primary school. If you would like to find out more about Mama Bear’s or are interested in joining the team visit www.mamabear.co.uk

Another round-up of local news from your hardworking Lib Dem team. It’s Our City: It’s Our City is the cross-party group leading the campaign to scrap the mayoral system on 5 May. You can find out more about the problems with the current system and the advantages of the committee system in the short video below. If you received a postal vote last week, be sure to return it as soon as possible: https://youtu.be/fjrAIDASFnc Scrap the Mayor debate: Bristol will go to the polls on Thursday 5 May to decide whether to keep our city mayoral system, or move to a committee-based system, where key decisions are made by multiple groups of councillors, rather than a single person. Eastside Community Trust, the Bristol Cable and Bristol Ideas are creating a space for people to come together, ask questions about how the referendum result will impact our lives in the city, and debate the wider issues at stake. 24
Join the panel to debate the issues. Thu, 28 Apr 2022, 17:30 at City Academy Bristol, Russell Town Avenue, Redfield. BS5 9JH Book your tickets here: New booking system for tips: From May you will need to book to visit the Bristol City Council recycling centres. The booking system is designed to create a better experience for residents by eliminating queuing time, easing congestion on roads around the recycling centres, and ensuring a smoother on-site experience. The booking system will replace the odd and even number plate system It will apply to all of the recycling centres There will be a way to book offline You will not need to book to visit the Avonmouth Reuse Shop You can book with as little as an hour’s notice
We are concerned this new system will create Star Bereavement Training: extra bureaucracy, which may discourage some people from recycling. Click on the Brislington Meadows: following link for more information and to sign up to the training: It is now pretty clear that the Mayor was dishonest with the Brislington electorate prior to the local elections last year when he said no homes would be built on the Meadows. He knew full well it was a promise he wouldn’t be able to keep, but it persuaded many people to vote for him, which of course was the intention. It’s now time to show the Mayor the door. On 5 May vote to end the broken promises and restore local democracy. Vote to scrap the Mayor! Consultation on Western Harbour: Bristol City Council is asking for your views on the draft vision for the Western Harbour, which includes the Cumberland Basin. The draft vision sets out a number of commitments that reflect the hopes of local people that were shared during public engagement in 2021. The council would like to hear your views on these commitments by completing a survey. You can take part at https://bristol.citizenspace.com/growth-regeneration/harbour-hopes/ This survey will close on 22 April 2022

5th May Bristolians will be given the choice on how we want our city to be governed On 5th May Bristolians will be given the choice on how we want our city to be governed. The choice is between having a mayor, directly elected by you, or governance by committees of cross-party councillors – giving up your right to elect our city’s leader. With a mayor, your vote decides the city’s political direction. Mayors are accountable to you, the public, and can only be hired or fired by you. They are a visible, well-known, accountable leader tasked with responsibility for the whole city and promoting Bristol at home and abroad. They give the city a clear focal point for interactions with the government, businesses, unions, charities, and so on. The question being asked in this referendum is essentially: do you want to elect your city’s leader, or do you want councillors to appoint one of themselves to run the council on a day-to-day basis? You may not have voted for either of Bristol’s mayors, but the key point is that you have the opportunity to vote them out. You have direct control over the city’s future. This is in stark contrast to the proposed committee system, where councillors would govern the council in cross-party committees. This was the system used in the UK until the late 1990s, when it was abolished for being slow, inaccessible, and unaccountable. If we go back to it, you can expect a deadlocked council with squabbling councillors unable to agree on anything.
26
The 2020s are such an important decade for Bristol. We are faced with housing and climate crises, the highest inflation in thirty years, and a skyrocketing cost-of-living. We, as a city, won’t be able to properly address these issues if even the most minor policy decisions have to be accepted by all five of the council’s political parties. Such weak governance arrangements would lead to councillors shirking responsibility for tough decisions, blaming everyone but themselves for bad ones, and ambitious policies being watered down until they’re acceptable to everyone. A mayor is elected on clear pledges, has the ability to deliver them, and is held to account on those pledges by the public. The Government has already said that it prefers dealing with elected mayors. In a time when the government is still giving precious little funding to councils, this means Bristol will likely get more grants and investment to spend on our city if we keep the mayor and reject the committee system. The mayoral system isn’t perfect, but it is the only system that gives you a direct say in your city’s leadership. Don’t give up your vote. Vote for a mayoral system on 5th May. Southern Co-op awarded Queen's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development An independent co-operative, which operates retail, funeral and coffee services across the south of England, has been recognised with one of the most prestigious awards for UK businesses - the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.
The awards celebrate the success of exciting and innovative businesses which are leading the way with pioneering products or services, delivering impressive social mobility programmes or showing their commitment to excellent sustainable development practices.
Southern Co-op is one of only 31 organisations nationally to be recognised with the award under the category Sustainable Development. Her Majesty The Queen personally approves the winners for the award.
Mark Smith, Southern Co-op's Chief Executive, said: "We are honoured to have been awarded this significant and well-respected title. We are committed to being a responsible and sustainable business, playing our part in creating a fairer society and sustainable world. Our colleagues work hard to realise this goal across every aspect of our business and this award recognises not only the progress we've made but the high standards to which they work.
Organisers of the award stated: "It has been an exceptionally hard few years for businesses and this achievement is testament to the resilience you and your staff have shown through these unprecedented times. "Southern Co-op is awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because it can clearly demonstrate that is delivering on its original purpose to put purpose before profit."
28
"In our entry, we explained that Southern Co-op was originally set up nearly 150 years ago in response to the societal challenges of that time - exploitation, inequality and poverty.
"Many of these challenges sadly still exist today, alongside environmental challenges like climate change, declining natural resources and threatened wildlife/ habitats. We all need to continue working together to tackle these issues and truly make a difference to our futures." Southern Co-op operates convenience food stores, coffee shops, funeral services, and crematoria/natural burial grounds in more than 300 locations across the south of England*. It is currently working towards ambitious science based targets to cut direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the business by 2030, supported by a climate action pathway of planned activity and an initial investment of £5.8m. Gemma Lacey, Southern Co-op's Director for Sustainability and Communications, said: "The information and evidence needed for this award was extensive but it also made us reflect on just how far we have come and the progress we've made in making our business sustainable.
"From reducing energy usage and supporting renewables to the transition to electric vehicles and tackling food waste, there is a whole range of projects underway which will contribute towards delivering our climate targets and ambitions. But there is always more to do and we hope to continue inspiring others to take action and join us on this journey to a sustainable future." The Queen's Awards for Enterprise is now in its 56th year with winning businesses able to use the esteemed Queen's Awards Emblem for the next five years. Families who applied for a reception school places in Bristol have been allocated one for September 2022. With 99% being offered one of their top three choices
This week families across Bristol are receiving offers of primary school places for September 2022. Out of the 4,844 families applying for a primary school place in Bristol:
“We always look to place children in their local schools, in a setting where they want to be, and we hope all children going to their new schools in September enjoy their first steps into education.
•
92 per cent (4,458) have been offered their first preference school, up from 89 per cent in 2021 (4,544).
“If any parents have concerns about the offer they have received, I would ask them to get in touch with our school admissions team, who will be able to help them with their options.”
•
Only 51 (one per cent) didn’t get an offer from their top three schools, a decrease again this year compared to 86 in 2021 and 129 in 2010.
Families who applied online will receive an email today (Tuesday 19 April) with their offer and are advised to check their spam folders for this email.
There were 277 fewer applications this year, with 4,844 compared to 5,121 in 2021.
Those who applied by post will be sent a letter today (Tuesday 19 April).
Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Children's Services, Education and Equalities, welcomed the news that even more parents would see their children go to their top choice schools this year, “For this year’s intake we have been able to offer over 90 per cent of parents their first preference for a primary school reception place in Bristol, and 99 per cent their top three.
Waiting lists become available from Friday 13 May and a second-round allocation, where any places that may become available will be reallocated, will take place in early June.

PROPERTY INSPECTIONS
This is a subject which often divides Property Investors… Some of the comments we hear around inspections and the “reasons” for not doing them, which come from self-managing Landlords range from: “I just don’t find the time to do them” to “It’s a bit of a waste of everyone’s time really” and, my personal favourite: “I have a good relationship with my tenants and trust that they will let me know if something is wrong.” In our experience property inspections are a must – not carrying them out is a false economy and, worse, storing up potential, expensive problems for the future.
32
Here’s the thing about inspections – if done correctly and carried out regularly, not only do they allow you to ensure that any issues with your property (and there will be issues from time to time, this is part and parcel of property management) are found in a timely manner and can be sorted before they escalate, but in addition, in doing so, it helps to maintain good relations with your tenants and fosters an environment where issues do not get ignored when they arise or swept under the carpet – but dealt with, quickly and timely, as and when they are spotted and before they grow into big and expensive problems! The protection of your biggest asset shouldn’t be left to chance, abandoned because you “simply don’t have the time” or hinge on a relationship that you believe you have with your tenants. Inspections allow you the opportunity to catch issues before they become big problems and to get a feel for what is happening inside your property and how it is being looked after.
We often notice things before tenants do and we always encourage them to be present at inspections – they live in the property, so they will know if something is wrong and working together with them to put it right, is the cornerstone of good property and tenant management. During inspections, some of the things we look for are: •
Safety and compliance (for example – alarms, sockets, fire safety and any obvious HHSRS issues);
•
Fabric of the building (boiler, radiators &trvs, guttering, fences etc);
•
A stitch in time issues (silicone, mould, drains etc);
•
Are tenants looking after the property; Is the garden (if applicable) in a good condition and being looked after;
•
Who and how many are living there (different sized shoes, additional toothbrushes, too many beds etc);
•
Whether there are any illegal substances visible (remember sight and smell here);
•
Whether there are any candles being used or other infringements to the contract;
•
Whether there is evidence of any pest infestations;
•
An opportunity to take meter reads and to talk with your tenants.
And, last but not least, my top tip – always have a look in the loft and any garage – this can be a wealth of information and a real eye opener

A Wodland Wander Walk information Distance: about 5.2 miles Difficulty: medium to hard: narrow, rugged paths, a couple of wooden stiles. Wearsuitable footwear. Ticks are present in this woodland so wear long sleeves, trousers and boots. Duration: allow 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace.
After about ¾ mile you will go through a gap in a wall. If you’re feeling energetic you could take the steep steps up on your left-hand side, to follow the orange route and do a detour up to the cliff edge (take extra care and don’t go too close to cliff edges). However, this walk continues straight on, following the blue footpath. Keep going until you see another map sign at a junction in the path.
Take the right-hand route here, then a quick left, onto the smaller footpath. Continue on, Take a wander around thetranquil woodland with the regular sound of aero planes of Goblin Combe and spot rare ferns and beautiful butterflies in the shady undergrowth. overhead. You will eventually come to a t-junction in the path so turn right here. This From the parking area, turn right into Plunder path runs alongside the copse, with fields on Street and go past the old school building. the left-hand side. At the end of the track turn Follow the footpath sign down the driveway right and follow it round to the left. Just a little towards Walnut Tree Farm. further on is a kissing gate on the right-hand side. Go through here then head straight Go through the gate marked The Congresacross the field towards the lane (Wrington bury Estate and ‘Footpath to Wrington only’. Hill). Keep on this stone track, into Cleeve Wood. Goblin Combe is a limestone gorge. About 200 million years ago it was dry desert but torrential rainstorms and flash floods created waterfalls which wore away the rock. Millions of years later, this process was repeated when snow melted following the Ice Age. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a local nature reserve. An ancient Iron Age settlement was based here too. You will spot the rare moonwort fern, which alchemists claimed had magical powers, and there are more than 30 species of butterflies. 42
Exit right and continue up the lane past the pretty cottages, all the way to the next woodland (Corporation Woods). Keep on the lane through the woods until you get to a junction next to Woodside Cottage. Take a sharp left here, up the driveway, signposted ‘Congresbury Woodlands.
Follow the woodland path over a little footbridge. Continue on the waymarked path on the left. The path runs downhill to a stile, which opens out onto a field filled with wild flowers. Cross the field, towards a gap in the trees. Head towards the gate at the bottom.
Go up the track and follow it round to the right. There is a map here and you will be following the green route towards Woolmers House.
Exit here onto the track and go immediately right, through another gate and along the path which runs between the hedges and trees.
Keep onwards on the main gravel track, continuing past Kennel House (Woolmers). Turn right after the house, the path between the gardens. This leads to a gate and into King’s Wood.
This leads to Chapel Lane,which then leads back to Cleeve Hill Road and the parking area.

Baggy trousers and slouchy jeans are back! Ten years ago, if you had asked anyone to put on a pair of jeans or trousers that weren't skin-tight, we'd have rolled our eyes in disgust. For what seemed like forever, we gave skinny jeans and leggings our undivided attention. That is, until one day when a light appeared at the end of the tunnel and saved us from another year of wearing pants that were uncomfortably tight. A decade and a handful of half-hearted trouser trends later, we've finally found a silhouette with the potential to rival the skinny jean era in a real way. Baggy pants, or as some people like to call them, puddle pants, have been on the rise for quite some time now, but it wasn't until they started popping up on every street style photograph. It was last year that the trend became crystal clear. A year later, they're back — and the options are better than ever. From slouchy, distressed denim to loose, extra-long trousers — check out offerings for the latest trends this year in baggy, slouchy and cool comfy jeans.

North Somerset is open and ready to do business
North Somerset Council has launched two new brochures aimed at businesses to boost the area’s economy and support its ambitions to develop trade and industry. The North Somerset Growth and Investment Prospectus sets out a roadmap to support economic renewal, with plans to create greater prosperity and quality of life in the area. The Weston-super-Mare Enterprise Area Prospectus outlines opportunities for investment and employment growth in this location. Councillor Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy at North Somerset Council, said: “North Somerset is proud to be home to a diverse range of businesses which are leaders in their field, but we’re committed to develop an even stronger local economy. “We want to support businesses to create more jobs in the area and these prospectuses set out our vision: encouraging inward and local investment to deliver economic growth that is green, digital and people-centred.
48
“Like any investment prospectus, they showcase development and infrastructure opportunities but they also paint the whole picture of North Somerset and all we have to offer. I really believe that we provide a major opportunity for businesses.” The two prospectuses can be found on the council’s business-facing website, In North Somerset (https://innorthsomerset.co.uk): North Somerset Growth and Investment Prospectus (https://innorthsomerset.co.uk/ NSGrowthandInwardInvestment) Weston-super-Mare Enterprise Area Prospectus (https://innorthsomerset.co.uk/WsMEnterpriseArea).
