FORWARDS
CHARLI XCX FIRST EVER BRISTOL FESTIVAL
Fresh from last week’s seminal sold-out Alexandra Palace gig, Britain's ‘main pop girl’ Charli XCX is revealed today as the final headline act and latest riotous tour-de-force to hit FORWARDS main music stage in Bristol this September, making her first ever festival appearance in the city.
Putting her own spin on mainstream pop, Charli XCX is behind some of the biggest tracks of the last decade, from hits like Out Out, I Love It and Good Ones, to collaborations with Cardi B, Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea, and David Guetta, right through to her landmark lockdown album ‘how i’m feeling now’.
Following the release of her first UK number one album CRASH, and current UK and North American tour, the avant-pop performer, singer-songwriter-producer, will take the stage by storm on Saturday for an iconic Bristol show, that cannot be missed.
FORWARDS. MORE THAN A MUSIC FESTIVAL:
Known for speaking out, stepping back from social media and focusing on her mental health, Charli XCX, embodies the essence of FORWARDS for urgent conversations side by side with music. After her groundbreaking debut documentary 'Alone Together' tested her creative limits and united a global community of vulnerable LGBTQ+ fans, Charli XCX continues to be a leading voice of a generation. 12
FORWARDS is the biggest new international music festival for Bristol, and the first collaboration for AEG Presents and Team Love. The 2 day festival challenges what metropolitan festivals can be today, kickstarting a new breed of city festivals by committing to positive change through social initiatives and a powerful platform for discussion. As well as the two main music stages, FORWARDS will also platform urgent, forward-thinking conversations.
SA Yvette There will be a discussion on race by former footballer and author of The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism John Barnes MBE in conversation with Bristolian poet and active media spokesperson on the Colston Four trial, Lawrence Hoo, as well as discussions on trans rights and gender fluidity, the cost of living crisis, feminist agendas and the music industry today, plus more. Other speakers include Lemn Sissay, Jack Monroe, Jay Rayner and Shon Faye.
Rosin
FORWARDS has built social initiatives into its infrastructure, so that they are at the core of what the festival is and how it runs. Amongst numerous initiatives, FORWARDS will open doors for young people with Community Interest Company, Big Team, providing paid festival job placements to those who have historically found the events industry difficult to break into, and partnering with community catering company Team Canteen who fight against food vulnerability, and will now provide community-led catering across the festival. TICKETS Day tickets are now available from £56.89, with weekend tickets available from £102.14 Concessions are available for children aged 5-15, local residents and low income individuals. www.forwardsbristol.co.uk Gates open 12:00 with the last entry to the event at 20:00.

June 1 - June 29 An Annual LGBT Pride Celebration
What were the Stonewall Riots?
Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognising the influence LGBT people have had around the world. Why was June chosen? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969.
The riots were prompted by a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. The LGBT community held a series of spontaneous, often violent demonstrations to protest against the raid and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation. In such places there should be no fears of being arrested. The riots served as a catalyst for the rights of LGBT people, and within 6 months, 2 gay activist groups had formed in New York. Over the years since the event, many gay rights organisations have been formed. Not just in the US but around the world.
As well as being a month long celebration, Pride month is also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. Parades are a prominent feature of Pride month, and there are many street parties, community events, poetry readings, public speaking, street festivals and educational sessions all of which are covered What is LGBT or Gay Pride? by mainstream media and attracting millions of participants. It is a movement that celebrates sexual diversity. For lesbian, gay, bisexual and The New York Pride Parade is one of the transgender (LGBT) people it is a way of largest and most well known parades to take protesting about discrimination and violence. place, with an estimated 500,000 people It promotes their dignity, equal rights, participating in it by the time it had reached its self-affirmation and is a way of increasing 25th anniversary. society’s awareness of the issues they face. Pride Month is so important because it marks the start of huge change within the LGBT+ community, as well as the wider societal implications. Although attitudes and injustice still remain, we have come a long way since the riots of 1969 and by continuing in this long standing tradition we continue to raise awareness, improve the attitudes of society and encourage inclusiveness. #Pride2020 14
Who Started the June Celebration? Known as the “Mother of Pride”, it was Brenda Howard who coordinated the first LGBT Pride march. As well as sparking the idea for a week of events around Pride Day. These events then developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.

Bristol charity calls for individuals and businesses to give volunteering a go Bristol charity Milestones Trust is calling for people and organisations to lend their support as volunteers ahead of Volunteers' Week.
Even when we had to do the sessions over Zoom due to the pandemic, people could still interact with the musicians and make requests for their favourite songs.
The social care charity, which supports people with learning disabilities and mental health needs in Bristol, had to put a pause on recruiting volunteers during the pandemic and has gradually started welcoming them back into the Trust with the easing of restrictions.
"I would like to encourage others to look for ways of being a volunteer that fits in with their lifestyle to enrich their lives. Even if you're just sharing a few hours of your week with someone, the impact that has can be huge and you won't regret trying it."
Volunteers' Week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. It runs from June 1-7 each year. Liz Gray, a Milestones Trust volunteer, leads a Bristol-based community initiative called the Music Train, which runs at the Coniston Community Centre Café in Patchway and at Kingsmeadow@MadeForever in Kingswood, whilst it will be returning to the Warmley Waiting Room café in Warmley over the summer. It gives people, including those the Trust supports, access to free live music and the chance to get involved themselves.
With a variety of volunteering roles available, ranging from ‘buddies' to accompany people the Trust supports to attend cultural and social activities, whether a theatre performance or a game of Uno, to gardening volunteers, there's something for everyone. Sara Turrill, volunteer coordinator for Milestones Trust, said:
"Our team of volunteers helps us meet a range of different needs and make a real, positive impact on the people we support, so we are thrilled we can welcome them back once again. We are very lucky to have the support of businesses and organisations too, who help us with much-needed gardenLiz, who lives in Hanham, has facilitated over ing, painting and decorating projects. WHAT ARE HMOS
AND WHY INVEST IN THEM?
We have been investing in HMOs in the wonderful city of Bristol since 2016 and in 2020 we opened an HMO letting agency.
We did this because, we couldn’t find the service that we were looking for, in the current market. Everything was a compromise and, we didn’t believe that we should be paying good money and having to make compromises in the level of service that we received – that just didn’t compute for us. So, this was how our lettings agency, KPA Property Management was born; because we knew that if we felt this way, then there would be lots of landlords and investors who thought that way too and, as they say, the rest is history! There are a few things that we get asked A LOT and, the one that we get asked repeatedly is, “what actually is an HMO?” So, let’s have a look at what they are and, why landlords and investors choose them as a property business model.
20
WHAT is an HMO?
HMO stands for a House in Multiple Occupation. The legal definition of an HMO is a house rented by 3 or more people from 2 or more households (I will overlook houses with lodgers for the moment). A household is determined as a family unit or a couple (married, unmarried, civil partnership) 3 tenants – A couple + 1 friend… HMO 4 tenants – 2 couples… HMO 5 tenants – Friends living together at Uni… HMO
HMOs can be rented in different ways too. Some are rented by the room (on single room contracts) whereas others are rented to an entire group (on a standard house contract with multiple tenants). Different rental methods have different implications for the landlord, for example, if you rent by the room you will need to pay council tax and it is very common that you will offer bills all rolled into the price. WHO would live in an HMO? Anybody! Although who might live in your HMO will depend on the type of property you are creating and the area it is in. Some HMOs are extremely high end (often labelled co-living) and positioned as a lifestyle choice for working professionals; other HMOs are “student digs” and are lived in by university students; others might be aimed at contractors/blue collar workers in the local area and of course, you have social housing properties rented to council tenants or social housing companies. Who would want to live in your HMO is a critical part of analysing a deal, but that is for another blog! WHERE would you have an HMO? Like all property models, there are places where HMOs work best and places where they don’t. It will usually come down to tenant demand, population density and local amenities. If there is sufficient demand and good transport links, an HMO will usually work. Near big employers, city centres and universities are great places for HMOs, as a quick and dirty metric you can look at the number of people who are looking in an area/postcode on Spareroom.co.uk to get a feel for demand, although this is not a perfect science it can be a good start. WHY invest in HMOs? HMOs are one of the higher cash flowing property models, which make them attractive to investors. In fact, one HMO can yield as much as several single or family lets. By taking a 3/4 bed family house, refurbing it and renting it to 5/6 individuals you can create more rental income from a single building. If you get it right, your HMO can return £1000-£2000 net per month and be relatively stress or hassle free.
However, as with all the high cash flow models, they come with increased risk, increased costs and if you manage them yourself, they require more time than a standard family let. When executed correctly, HMOs are a brilliant property model creating great returns and maximising a portfolio. When done badly, they can land you with £10,000s of fines, council investigations, armed police raids, personal threats, and very costly voids/arrears! In summary: Rental yields for HMOs can be impressive and significantly higher than other property models. Demand is high in certain areas, with City rents being beyond the reach of many and tenants new to an area choosing co-living, as a way to make new friends and renting well into their thirties and beyond. With this in mind, it’s easy to see why Property Investors choose HMOs, as there is a plentiful market for them, and they achieve good returns. However, HMOs are stringently regulated and compliance heavy and they are certainly not easy money. Many Landlords find it hard to keep up to date with ever changing compliance and are constantly concerned about falling foul of regulations and getting into hot water with their local authority. If you are going to invest in them, then do your homework, have robust systems, choose your tenants carefully, fully reference them and manage the property diligently, from the outset and throughout. We are extremely familiar with all aspects of HMOs, they are our bread and butter and if we can help in any way, then just give us a shout! 21
You can now apply for free £6,000 towards home upgrades
Millions of people in the UK can now apply to get a free £6,000 payment from the government towards home upgrades. To get the cash, you'll need to own your own home and live in England or Wales.
But houses that need heat pumps where heat is sourced from the ground will receive £6,000. To apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you must live in England or Wales and own your property.
It comes as the Government plans to ban gas boilers in all new build properties from 2025. The scheme opened yesterday, and aims to encourage more Brits to switch to heat pumps.
You home will need to have an installation capacity up to 45kWth, and a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. If you have an insulation exemption, you may be able to apply too.
Under current plans, the Government wants to ban gas boilers in all new build properties from 2025. The installation of gas boilers could then be phased out entirely from 2035, as part of its plans to reach net zero by 2050. The plans to ban gas boilers are still proposals at this stage. It is thought households would only have to switch to another energy source once their existing gas boiler has stopped working. Heat pumps are seen as the most favourable option to replace gas boilers. They work essentially like a fridge in reverse, with these devices extracting warmth from the air or the ground, or from water. But of course, one of the main stumbling blocks for many homeowners is that heat pumps aren’t cheap to install. This is where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme comes in, as it could help you cover some of the costs. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a heat pump can cost £6,000 to £8,000, while MoneySavingExpert puts the figure at £10,000 to £12,000. This means you’d need to stump up potentially another £1,000 to £7,000 on top of the grant for the installation. How to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is part of a £450million fund being provided by the Government. Through the initiative, most households who are eligible will be able to apply for £5,000 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump or biomass boiler.
22
You don't apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant yourself - instead, you need to find an MSC-certified installer to claim the grant on your behalf. Homeowners can find the cheapest and nearest tradesman on the MSC website - make sure you compare prices to get the best quote. Once you agree a price, the installer will then apply for the grant. You'll then be contacted by Ofgem to confirm that the work is being done on your behalf. The scheme is available from now until 2025. Will a heat pump save you money on energy bills? It depends on what type of boiler you are replacing, and how old it is - but on the whole, the answer is yes if you’ve got a really old heating system. According to consumer champion Which?, you could save up to £1,410 a year if you’re replacing an old inefficient (G-rated) LPG boiler with a heat pump. This is based on figures from the Energy Saving Trust. It also suggests the savings you’d get from replacing an old storage heater would be £1,330, or £435 for an old (G-rated) oil boiler.

Eco-boost for Southmead
Southmead community comes together to celebrate a greener and more sustainable future for the local high street. Local people helped to design a range of improvements to make Arnside Road a more attractive, safer and eco-friendly place to visit. The shopping area has been substantially updated, including new pavements, kerbs and walkways, new cycle stands and bollards, street planting beds to help natural drainage and increase biodiversity, and new car parking areas on Greystoke Avenue. Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: “We have declared a climate and ecological emergency and it is fantastic to see areas within the city taking big leaps to make their high streets more sustainable and climate friendly. “We’ve carried out a range of improvements to the streets and facilities around Arnside Road and are committed to an ambitious regeneration and housing delivery programme in Southmead. We’re looking forward to working with Southmead Development Trust and other partners to deliver the next important phases of improvement. “I would like to thank the people of Southmead, and the various local community groups, who have engaged with us so enthusiastically on this project.” Large Sustainable Urban Drainage trenches have been dug on both sides of Arnside Road. 24
This is the first time ‘Stockholm’ tree pits have been built in Bristol and means Arnside now has an avenue of trees as well as a system to help reduce flood risks for homes in the area. There is also ‘raingarden’ planting along each side of the road. Alongside these improvements, eight sustainable drainage pods have been constructed and planted in the roads to the north of Arnside Road. These will help to hold back rainwater and reduce flooding downstream as well as bringing colour and nature into the local streets. The work on Arnside is the first step in delivering the Southmead Masterplan, the community-led vision that was adopted in 2018 with wide input from many of the residents and stakeholders. This includes current proposals to sell council land to Aldi to enable them to deliver a larger, improved store, subject to planning approval. The expansion will secure the long-term future of this anchor store and in turn the future of the Arnside Road shopping area. This will mean relocating services that currently take place in the youth centre to newly refurbished space at the Ranch – Southmead Adventure Playground. Southmead Library will also be moved – firstly taking up a temporary space at Southmead House before a new purpose built home is created for it as part of future development in the area.
The new look Arnside was officially opened by Lord Mayor of Bristol Councillor Steve Smith. He said: “It was an honour to officially open the new look Arnside and reveal the extensive public realm works that have been undertaken over the last year. “The new granite benches feature artwork by Nick Hands and Simon Tozer. They were developed with local people and celebrate everything about the local area, including famous son of Southmead David Prowse who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy.” The public realm improvements were made with support from a £3.6 million Housing Infrastructure Fund grant from Homes England, and work to install the drainage system was supported by funding from Wessex Water. Wessex Water’s Director of Assets and Compliance Matt Wheeldon said: “Working with partners to develop the infrastructure to help protect communities is a key element of our continued wider commitment towards finding sustainable solutions towards reducing surface water flooding and the amount of groundwater entering public and private sewers and drains.
“In Southmead, we are contributing £55,000 towards the work of Bristol City Council and Homes England to install Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in the regenerated Arnside area to help mitigate against the issues caused when very heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems.” Amy Kinnear, CEO of Southmead Development Trust, said: “We’re delighted to see the works complete and the boost this will give to the much loved Arnside shopping area. Bristol City Council has involved our residents at every step of the way, including designing the artwork for the new granite benches”. The council is also working with the local representatives to support community-led plans for a vibrant new development of homes and community facilities on Glencoyne Square. The current development proposals include over 170 new homes to meet local need, community and enterprise space, and a new Southmead Library, together with an improved open space.

New booking system for recycling centres
Brislington Green Trail: We were delighted to join local residents at Arnos Court Park this week, to make a short video with Bristol City Council about the origins of the Brislington Green Trail and how the scheme benefitted from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding. This year, we have several applications for CIL funding and Greater Brislington Together will hopefully be organising a public meeting in the next few weeks, when we can find out more about the bids and select our community priorities. You can find out more about the Brislington Green Trail here: https://greaterbrislington.org/greentrail/ New café concession at Arnos Court Park: We are delighted to see the new café concession up and running at Arnos Court Park. The current operators have a contract to trade until 31 October. This is a trial pitch and there will be a consultation in about a month’s time. All being well, the council will offer an extension through the winter with a view to advertising the pitch for a three year contract from April 2023. 26
New booking system for recycling centres: From 6 June, you’ll need to make a reservation to visit the city’s recycling centres and the booking system is now open. You can book up to two weeks in advance, or one hour before you visit if slots are available. People without access to the internet can call 0117 922 2100 Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 6pm (closed 12 1.30pm on Wednesday). We are concerned that the new system may discourage people from recycling, so please let us know if you have any issues with it. More details HERE New housing development: You may be aware that Sovereign Housing Association recently acquired a large area of riverside land in Brislington West; it’s the site currently occupied by City Motors on St Phillip’s Causeway. We will be meeting with them shortly to find out more about their plans for the site and they will be commencing consultations with local residents, community groups and businesses very soon. We will keep you posted as their plans develop.

New street lighting: Across the city, council teams have been installing new LED lanterns. However, in some roads the lanterns don’t quite illuminate the surrounding area as well as the previous lights did. We have received a small number of complaints, including one elderly resident who felt less safe in the evening due to the lower level of lighting. We are pleased to say the council has installed more powerful LED varieties in response, which should hopefully lead to the road being at a higher light level. If you notice a problem on your road, get in touch and we will let the council know. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. Visitors to Kingswood’s Kings Chase Shopping Centre can now park for free
Shoppers and visitors to Kings Chase Shopping Centre in Kingswood can now park for up to four hours for free thanks to South Gloucestershire Council. The free car parking is part of the council’s regeneration plans for the town and follows their purchase of the shopping centre in May 2021. Offering four-hour free parking will benefit shoppers, visitors and retailers in Kings Chase and provide a boost for the town centre as a whole. The removal of the parking charges, which was considered following a campaign led by the local MP, brings the car park in line with the longstanding policy of providing free parking in all council owned car parks across South Gloucestershire, helping to support local communities by removing an important barrier to visiting. South Gloucestershire Council Leader, Councillor Toby Savage, said: “We have exciting and ambitious plans for the future of Kingswood and are investing £25 million into the area to improve the town centre and surrounding areas. “Providing four hours free parking at Kings Chase Shopping Centre means that people can come to shop and stay a little longer to explore all that Kingswood has on offer such as the wonderful parks and open spaces. This is just one element of our work supporting Kingswood’s success as a vibrant and sustainable community, where people want to live and young families to put down roots. 28
Other work includes the partial pedestrianisation of Regent Street, which will enhance the shopping experience and improve air quality, the complete renovation of the Whitfield Tabernacle to supplement the arts and cultural heart of Kingswood, and supporting the relocation of the Kingswood Leisure Centre to the town centre.” Kings Chase Shopping Centre Manager, Kadir Mustafa, said: “We are delighted to launch our new free parking initiative at Kings Chase. With the unprecedented cost of living crisis biting hard we are committed to relieving the pressure on our customers wherever we can. We hope that this removal of parking fees combined with our strong line up of value led retailers will make life a little easier for the Kingswood community during these difficult times.” South Gloucestershire Council has recently approved a masterplan for Kingswood which aims to unlock a shared future vision that will bring improved experiences for shopping, culture, heritage and green spaces to the area. The Kings Chase Shopping Centre is an important element of the plan and will provide an improved commercial and leisure offer within the community. The centre will accommodate the new leisure centre and the wider building will also potentially include new residential uses.

Thousands of pounds raised for local community causes More than £14,500 has been raised by coMore than £5,800 was raised at 13 stores for operative colleagues and customers in Bristol Julian Trust - a Night Shelter for homeless and Somerset. people and rough sleepers in Bristol. Thousands of pounds will be shared between 10 separate charities and good causes which were the 2021 local partners of The Cooperative Food stores in Bristol and Somerset. The money was raised through collection pots and fundraising activities at the Southern Co-op stores and will be rounded up to make sure each charity receives at least £1,000. Holly Bramble, Community Lead at the regional, independent co-operative, said: "Each of these local causes makes a difference in their local community. It is incredibly important to us, our colleagues and our members to make sure we support them in their efforts - whether that is a local school working to be more sustainable, or a charity which cares for people in need. "So we'd like to thank every shopper who put their pennies in the collection pots and every colleague who organised a fundraising activity. It's been a tough few years but it is wonderful to see people continuing to support each other where they can." 30
Joanne Brown, Trustee at Julian Trust, said: "We are absolutely thrilled and humbled to be chosen by Southern Co-op for your fundraising. The Julian Trust is wholly staffed and managed by volunteers and relies entirely on voluntary donations of food and money in order to feed and accommodate homeless people and rough sleepers in Bristol so this money will go directly towards our mission - to offer 'a hot meal, a bed for the night and a warm welcome' to those in need. "We are planning to carry out a well-overdue replacement of our floor in the night shelter this summer so your fantastic fundraising will be utilised towards that. This will ensure that the work of the volunteers can continue and the maintenance of the building will be safe for the future. We couldn't do any of this without your valuable support." A further £600 was raised in May this year for the Ukraine DEC Appeal as a number of store colleagues took part in a hike up Pen Y Fan.
The other local causes benefitting from the funding are 34th Weston-Super-Mere Scouts, BARB Search and Rescue, Conquest Centre, Dorothy House Hospice Care, Kingshill Friends Association, Marie Curie Bridgwater Fundraising Group, The Hub - Yeovil Community Support Charity, The Royal Marines Charity, and Vallis First School. Stores that took part in the fundraising in Bristol and Somerset were The Co-operative Food in Banwell's Knightcott Road; Bath's Widcombe Hill; Bedminster's North Street; Bridgwater's Stockmoor Park; Bristol's Ashley Down Road, Church Road, Longdown Avenue, Redcliffe Street, School Road, Two Mile Hill Road, Wells Road, and Whiteladies Road; Burnham on Sea's Berrow Road; Cotford St.Luke's Graham Way; Frome's Nunney Road; Hanham's Memorial Road; Keynsham's Queens Road; Nailsea's Hannah More Road; Norton Fitzwarren's Morse Road; Pill's Baltic Place; Portishead's Port Marine; Taunton's Wellington New Road; and Yeovil's Mudford Road.
Every year, each of Southern Co-op's local food stores choose a local partner which aims to create greener, safer, healthier or more inclusive neighbourhoods. Southern Co-op's Love Your Neighbourhood programme also enables charities and local causes to apply for grants of up to £500 to help sow the seeds to a secure, stronger future for everyone. Your Garden In June Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.
The essential gardening jobs for June Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive.
Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.
44
A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mower blades if we have a drought.
Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sap-sucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.
Plant of the month: Rose Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.
How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser. Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

CASTLE SCHOOL HOSTS CROSS COUNTRY EVENT FOR LOCAL PRIMARIES A recent cross-country racing event for five local primary schools organised by The Castle School in Thornbury and run on their playing field, was greeted with huge enthusiasm by pupils taking part despite getting off to a damp start. St Mary's Primary, Oldbury-on-Severn Primary, Christ the King Primary, Manorbrook Primary, and Crossways Junior School all entered pupils from Years 5 and 6. The young runners were divided into groups and guided through a series of well received warm-up exercises by a team of Year 10 students who had recently been supported by The Castle School to take part in a sports leaders training course at UWE. Two races took place - one for each of the Year 5 and Year 6 entrants - attracting some tremendous team efforts and impressive achievements from individual runners. Medals were awarded to the top three runners in each event with Crossways, the school which scored most highly overall, earning the highly-coveted Castle School Events Cup. This was the first sporting event held by The Castle School since before Covid, and was organised to strengthen sporting links between local schools and The Castle School which will be where many pupils will transfer at age 11. 46
Joe Docherty, head teacher at The Castle School, said: “Huge thanks are due to our sports leaders - Beth Elderton, Joe Edwards, Louis Bloodworth, Adam Jackson, Mitch Sewell, and Catalin Adronik – and to the many others from across the year groups who helped with preparations for and running of the event, including race marshals, those who provided support to runners at the finish line and our house captains for helping with results. “I’d also like to thank Year 10 students Yareni Jacobs and Amy Hewitt who photographed the event, Alice Goodman – also Year 10 - who created certificates for the winners and Ruby Erylis-Fellows in Year 7 who was responsible for making signs for the day. “I think we can safely say the event was a great success. It was lovely to welcome the runners from Years 5 and 6 to our school and we look forward to the next such occasion.” The Castle School is part of the Castle School Education Trust (CSET), which also includes Marlwood School, Mangotsfield School, Downend School, Charfield Primary School, Lyde Green Primary School and Severn Beach Primary School. HISTORIC FINISH FOR SOMERSET RACER AFTER FIRST DEAD HEAT IN 27 YEARS
A junior motorcycle rider from Bridgwater in Somerset was involved in the first dead heat in a British Championship race since 1995. Competing in the 2022 Honda Talent Cup at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire, 15-year-old Carter Brown crossed the line at the exact same time as MLav VisionTrack Academy teammate Johnny Garness, with a photo finish unable to separate the two riders.
Having claimed victory in the first race of the race weekend on Saturday, Carter Brown had to battle his way from 9th position on the grid to jointly win the race. After 22 laps of action-packed racing, the timing monitors confirmed there was 0.000 seconds difference between the riders on the line, confirming the closest finish in the British Superbike paddock in twenty-seven years of racing.

Speaking after the race, Carter Brown said: "I don't know what to say, I'm blown away! It has been a crazy weekend. I was so happy to win on Saturday, so to back that up with another win on Sunday is amazing. I still can't believe it was a dead heat, I'm so happy for me and the MLav VisionTrack Academy team." The British Talent Cup is a 20-race championship that is designed to identify the next generation of talent from the British & Irish Isles, with 13- to 16-year-old racers competing on Honda NSF 250 R motorcycles. The 10-round competition features at British Superbike Championship (BSB) events, with the highlight of the season being a support race at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
