Support for people with hidden disabilities
Living with a hidden disability presents additional challenges for many people living in North Somerset. A non-visible disability, by its very nature, won't always be obvious to others and this can often mean people aren't treated with compassion and understanding. North Somerset Council is working alongside the four local town councils to change things and raise awareness of the issues using the Sunflower scheme.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower can be worn by anyone with a hidden disability as a discreet way to indicate to others that they may need additional support, help or a little more time. Since its launch in 2016, it has now been adopted by many supermarkets, railway and coach stations, leisure facilities, the NHS, a number of police, fire and ambulance services, and an increasing number of small and large businesses and organisations. North Somerset Council is launching the scheme this week across all its public facing sites including libraries, children’s centres, the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset Hall in Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea. The council staff working in those venues have received training in hidden disabilities and the types of support people wearing the Sunflower might need. People can also pick up a Sunflower lanyard free of charge at these venues if they need one. Cllr Mike Bell, the council's deputy leader and champion for disabled people said: "An estimated 1 in 5 people in the UK have a disability, 80% of them having a hidden disability. We're keen to make sure that they can feel welcome and confident using any of our buildings, knowing that they'll be treated with the care and compassion they might need.
"Our staff will wear the Sunflower support pin badges to show customers that they've been trained on hidden disabilities and we'll have other materials in our buildings to show customers that we're supporting the hidden disabilities scheme. We're committed to making sure that people are treated fairly in North Somerset and this is just one of the steps we're taking to deliver on our promises." 36 Disability can make daily life more demanding and people are affected in different ways. It can be painful, exhausting, and isolating. Without visible evidence of the disability, it is frequently difficult for others to acknowledge the challenges faced and as a consequence, sympathy and understanding can often be in short supply. Alongside North Somerset Council, Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead and Weston-super-Mare town councils are all also championing the sunflower lanyard scheme.

Joining the Sunflower Scheme will further support our ambitions for the town” said Councillor Mike Bird, Chair or Nailsea Town Council.
Mike Bell added: "While it's great that us and the town councils are behind this scheme, I'd like to see more local businesses supporting it too. Having focussed on launching in Birmingham since the 26th of July of this year, award-winning baby and toddler class booking system, Happity, are now bringing their focus to Bristol. They have been pushing to get as many classes listed on their site for free and, as a part of this launch, Happity will be providing Bristol with limited time offers.
Prior to Covid-19, it was estimated that 1 in 5 women suffer with mental health issues during pregnancy or in the first year after birth (Royal College of Psychiatrists) and that up to 50% of mothers with mental health issues are undiagnosed and struggle alone without support (NCT Research). Post Covid-19, the NHS have stated this figure has increased to 1 in 10. These figures are one of the many motivators that drive Happity to be the company it is today.
Happity’s co-founder, Emily Tredget, has struggled with Postnatal Depression in the past. With feelings of loneliness being one of the main symptoms of PND, she has been driven to help parents build a community around them for support and friendship, saying that Happity’s main goal is to “end loneliness for new parents”. She has experienced the benefits of attending baby and toddler classes herself and is passionate about connecting parents and class providers together. “Being at home with a new baby is lonely,” says Emily. “Paradoxically you’re never alone but you sometimes have never felt so lonely. Baby classes are a vital way of combating this. They give new mums a place to meet other parents, to feel like part of a group.” Since their launch starting with 4 public beta postcodes in April of 2017, Happity are now listing over 8,000 sessions per month. Mostly being London-based in the past
however, they have started to expand across the rest of the UK. They have created a location-based launch campaign, starting in Birmingham and now moving into Bristol. For a limited time, they will be offering baby and toddler class providers located here a free virtual admin service when they sign up to list on the site. This service includes setting up the class providers account and adding timetables. Following this, they also provide a help-desk with articles to help providers learn their “user friendly” systems. “They get it,” says Happity member Rosie from Foxtrots. “The system they have in place is seamless. And the site (once you're in your stride) is incredibly user friendly... For a nominal subscription fee, you get a wider reach, you meet new people, you benefit from some great marketing/promotional perks, you receive fantastic support and your workload is reduced. What's not to love?”
"Classes are so important for a baby's development," Sara Tateno, Co-founder of Happity says. “The repetition helps them learn, and being around other babies is so important for socialisation. They are also really key for a parents’ mental health as they provide structure and community."
This is something that has been lacking during Covid, although Happity was instrumental in getting legislation communicated to ensure classes could return as soon as they were safe too after parents reported development delays and mental health struggles as a result of isolation. In fact they were nominated for a Parliamentary Award for their support to new parents during Covid. The offer for the free virtual admin service is available to any class providers in Bristol (regardless of how old or how new the class is) until the 31st of October 2021.
