Hello everyone I hope all of you have had a great week so far.

I have had lots of time to do jobs around the house recently at the weekend which in unusual for me as I am not a fan of house work and DIY. I did notice on Facebook a friend put a post up showing B and Q with horrendous queues as people line up for DIY products. If only they knew this is making the problem worst and may prolong the lockdown in to June. Most things can be bought online and delivered theses days so why do it.

Congratulations to Captain Tom Moore for reaching his 100th Birthday and raising over 29 million pounds for the NHS. I think he thoroughly deserves his honorary rank of Colonel for all his hard work. Goes to show if we put our minds to it we can accomplish anything.

As a massive Star Wars fan May has one of my favorite days “ May the 4th “ So get your geek on for this special day folks.

Finally to end on a sad note my heart felt condolences go out to all the families that have lost lives to this virus doing their very best to protect us.

Jewelled Moroccan cous cous

Ingredients​

100g Couscous made up with 120ml boiling vegetable stock 2 tbsp olive oil 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp cumin 1 tbsp. honey 1/8 red onion, finely diced ½ tbsp fresh chopped coriander (stalks and leaves) 1/4 pomegranate seeds 1/2 tbsp flaked almonds 1/8 courgette, core removed and finely chopped 2 dried apricots, rehydrated in water for several hours, diced into small chunks Salt and pepper to taste ½ tbsp. chopped mint leaves and parsley 6(optional)

Method 1. Fry off the spices with the oil in a hot frying pan for 30 seconds.

2. Take off the heat and remove from the pan, placing into a bowl.

3. Stir in 1 tbsp. honey then allow to cool.

4. Prepare the ingredients as above.

5. Stir the cooled oil and honey into the cous cous.

6. Add the prepared ingredients and half of the almonds and half the coriander (and other herbs if using), stir to combine.

7. Garnish with the remaining coriander and almonds.

8. Season to taste.

9. Serves 2.

“A Community Coming Together” Both Jos and Andrew have been really impressed with the way the Brislington community has come together to support one another during the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic, especially all the new street-by-street WhatsApp and Facebook groups that have sprung up, with neighbours offering each other help and support.

Back in early March Jos and Andrew set up an online application process for people needing help, and also for those volunteering to help, for the whole of Greater Brislington. The number of people who registered as volunteers greatly outnumbered those who required help, which meant the matching process was relatively quick and easy. Andrew said, ‘It has been such a pleasure coordinating all the volunteers, who have always been so willing to help.’ Jos added, ‘So far we’ve organised support with shopping and prescriptions, dog walking, telephone ‘buddies’ and even laundry help.’

In addition to this, Jos and Andrew have been telephoning elderly and vulnerable residents right across Brislington West. Jos said, ‘We were worried some of the most vulnerable people in our ward might not have internet access or might be reticent about completing an online form.’

(Brislington West) So far Jos and Andrew have made around 2,000 phone calls and are now starting to make follow-up calls to check in on people and make sure their circumstances haven’t changed.

In the vast majority of cases vulnerable residents are getting the support they need from family, friends and helpful neighbours.

Bristol City Council have now launched their own city-wide helpline, We Are Bristol, and have a volunteer network, Can Do Bristol. Jos and Andrew wanted to publicise this as widely as possible but once again were worried that the most vulnerable residents might not have access to the internet.

So they got together with all the councillors in Brislington West and East, along with community campaigners and local groups and together came up with the idea of a leaflet which could be delivered to every address in Brislington. Andrew said, ‘The whole process was incredibly speedy and once again our volunteers were amazing. We managed to print, distribute and deliver the leaflet in a matter of days.’

The Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic has been overwhelmingly negative, impacting upon people’s lives and livelihoods in a terrible way, but there have been some positives, including the renewed sense of community spirit. Jos said, ‘When all this is over, I am really hopeful the strong community spirit will remain and we will continue to look out for one another.’

Two-year extension for storage of frozen eggs, sperm and embryos There has been a warm reception for Monday’s announcement from the Government granting a two-year extension to the period legally permitted for fertility clinics to store frozen eggs, sperm and embryos for use in assisted fertility procedures.

The extension increases the routine storage period from 10 to 12 years, in order to allow additional time for the resumption of fertility services which are currently on hold because of coronavirus.

Health minister, Lord Bethell, explained that the move is to ensure “…those that have embryos, sperm or eggs stored as part of their treatment are not unfairly caught out by the existing storage limits and have the best possible opportunity to start their family in the future.”

Sally Cheshire, chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), has welcomed the government announcement and stated that the HFEA will be issuing guidance to individual clinics on implementing the new extension.

Family law expert Sarah Wood-Heath, a partner with Clarke Willmott LLP, said: “This is such an important and reassuring step being taken by the Government.

“Undergoing fertility treatment is a difficult and emotional process anyway, and with the difficulties presented by Covid 19 it has been a concern that if patients are unable to proceed with treatment their frozen embryos or gametes may have been destroyed once the 10 year time limit was met.

“Patients can now feel reassured that although fertility treatment is currently suspended, once clinical procedures resume they should be able to continue with treatment as previously planned and use the embryos and gametes they already have in storage.”

Eight changes we may see in phase two of lockdown The UK is entering week six of lockdown people have been given a ¬snippet of hope over a return to something resembling normal life. On his first day back after battling Covid- 19, Boris Johnson announced this week his plans to unveil the first steps to easing lockdown restrictions.

But he warned us we are still at "maximum risk" from the virus and now was not the time to lift the lockdown completely.

Here is a list of the some of the smaller changes which could put in place.

1. Expanding social bubbles One of the options could be to allow people to expand their 'social bubbles' in order to see more of their friends and family. Another possibility could see people from two separate households, or couples who don't live together to be able to spend time together. But grandparents who live in a different areas from their grandchildren would still need to wait until restrictions were eased further.

Boris promised to give more details on this and other ways to ease the restrictions "in the coming days".

2. Tougher restrictions in some areas Warnings also suggested that some areas could in fact see tougher restrictions be put in place, seeing a 14-day quarantine for new arrivals at British ports and airports.

Boris acknowledged there were signs we are "passing through the peak" of the outbreak and coming to the end of the first phase.

The daily hospital death toll on Monday fell below 400 this is the least amount of deaths the country has seen since last month. But Boris suggested that : “Difficult ¬judgments will be made and we cannot spell out now how fast or slow or even when those changes will be made.”

3. Non-essential businesses may re-open MPs are expected to discuss plans to keep businesses that are non-essential coronavirus-free, in order for them to reopen in the coming weeks.

They are currently looking into just how non-essential businesses, like garden centres, could resume trading.

4. Refining rather than lifting The Chief Medical Officer Mr Whitty said that the government faced "some very difficult choices" to keep the virus transmission as low as possible and Boris said that any changes to the current lockdown would not involve lifting it, but rather "refining" it.

A MP suggested: "There may be easing in some areas. There may even be toughening in other areas around the UK." 5. New guidelines on face masks expected MPs may recommend people wear face masks when using public transport, visiting the supermarkets or shops and in some workplaces.

A decision to resume sports matches behind closed doors will also be made soon.

6. Reviews of school re-opening Schools are not expected to be opened just yet, but may be addressed publicly after the next review on May 7. But some officials are optimistic students will be back at school in June.

7. New business loans The Chancellor also revealed that the current lockdown is having drastic consequences for businesses, with thousands of firms having stopped trading. He also announced a brand new "micro loans scheme" to help small companies in trouble.

It will range from a minimum of £2,000 to a maximum of £50,000 and firms must have been up and running before the start of March in order to be eligible.

The Chancellor spoke at a media briefing this week in Downing Street on Coronavirus. Former minister Theresa Villiers urged him “to publish a map of how to release from the lockdown so that businesses can start to prepare for a restart and a safe exit from the lockdown”. The global stock markets staged a £400billion rally this week as other countries began to ease restrictions. But the FTSE 100 index showed a £550billion rise, even though our own ¬lockdown is not yet being lifted.

8. More tests to come The government is also pushing up its "test and trace" strategy, Matt Hancock is claiming the UK is "on track" to reach his promise of 100,000 a day by the end of the week

Debt recovery: how should businesses tailor strategies during coronavirus

“Creditors need to look to alternative arrangements that they may not have previously considered such as temporary payment breaks, payment plans, the freezing of interest or negotiating reduced balance full and final settlements.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has recently announced the introduction of temporary measures, to directly support consumers facing payment difficulties due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

“Recourse to the courts should always be the last resort, and now more than ever creditors should be mindful of the additional costs of court action and whether these will ultimately be recoverable. Where achievable, customer engagement and amicable settlement agreements are clearly preferable.”

However, many creditors are themselves being hit by the challenges created by the current pandemic.

This means that the support they can offer their customers before they hit financial problems is likely to be limited. Creditors must consider how to maintain their income at a time when many of their customers are struggling.

However, where does this leave creditors whose customers are not willing to engage?

With current circumstances being far from usual, creditors may be reluctant to ask their customers for payment of monies owed. In turn, this may put their own businesses at risk.

Phil continued: “It’s important that creditors do not delay in asking for payment, especially as it can mean crucial conversations can begin sooner rather than later. More than ever, there should be a real focus on making prompt customer contact and engagement.

Specialist debt recovery lawyers at national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP say prompt and straightforward communication is key and that some thinking outside the box as well as professional advice may be needed to stay afloat during these unprecedented times.

Phil Roberts, head of Clarke Willmott’s debt recovery team, said: “Creditors are facing many challenges during the coronavirus pandemic. Some businesses have furloughed staff and do not have the capacity to contact debtors. Others have found that alternative working practices means they are so busy there is no time to consider outstanding debts.

“The intention behind the FCA’s announcement reflects the general approach of the credit industry and the willingness to help and support customers with debt where possible.

“Whilst many creditors are not bound specifically by the FCA’s direction, which in any case does not apply to business customers, the general ethos remains correct. Where possible, creditors should engage with customers to try to find solutions for the repayment of debt. Honest, sensitive and straightforward communication is likely to help both parties find a way forward.

“There are some simple and obvious steps which can be taken. If you have email addresses and telephone numbers, then use these to contact customers in addition to standard lettering processes.

If your customer is a business, a simple internet search could reveal whether they are trading or provide alternative contact details if the business is closed.

“Many businesses will already have procedures in place and the additional steps that can be taken to prompt customer engagement will vary. However, taking a pro-active approach will prompt a better outcome in terms of keeping cash flowing. If court proceedings become necessary, it will also provide evidence that the creditor has done all that could reasonably have been expected to obtain payment.”

COVID-19 transitional skills programme receives overwhelming response from hospitality and tourism workers keen to redeploy into care sector An innovative skills transition programme was launched at the beginning of April 2020, offering hospitality and tourism workers, displaced as a result of Covid-19, the opportunity to gain the critical skills needed to secure employment within the care sector, helping to meet the increased staffing demand and support our society’s most vulnerable.

“The Care Certificate offers individuals an in-depth introduction to the role, helping to upskill them and support their transition into the sector” added John Rogers. To promote these opportunities to hospitality workers, with the transferable skills that Caretech are looking for, the partnership has teamed up with Total Jobs Group to profile the 500 roles through the hospitality jobs site Caterer.com.

Developed as part of a collaboration between Skills for Health, People 1st International and CareTech, the programme pilot for 500 staff has received an overwhelming response from more than 11,000 willing hospitality workers, with sought after transferable skills, to retrain, preparing them to work safely in a new role and a new sector.

Neil Pattison, Director, Caterer.com says: “ Caterer.com partnered with TotalJobs to create the Hospitality Redeployment Hub - a free to use service to help the estimated 500,000 hospitality workers displaced by the Covid-19 crisis to find work in other sectors at this critical time.

“Hospitality workers have a huge range of skills that are highly transferable to other sectors such as care and we’re pleased to be collaborating with Skills for Health, CareTech and People 1st International on their excellent initiative to help smooth the way for candidates to enter the care sector as swiftly as possible.” Shortlisted applicants will undertake the online learning during the 14-day self-isolation period recommended before entering a care home, after which they will be invited to a final interview before commencing employment.

Your Garden In May Spring is well under way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Geranium Why should you plant them?

Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy.

Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

If you have already grown tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them.

If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant.

They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season.

How should you plant them?

Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost.

They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine.

Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

GRAND PIER SHINES A LIGHT FOR ESSENTIAL WORKERS

The night sky above Weston-super-Mare’s seafront now has a distinctive blue tint to it as the Grand Pier pays its own tribute to the NHS and other essential workers during the current pandemic.

“But also, we didn’t just want to make this gesture on a Thursday night, when so many people are taking to their doorsteps, gardens and balconies to clap in appreciation.

The resort’s top tourist attraction has been transformed into a blue beacon every night as a show of recognition and appreciation to those front-line workers who are spearheading the fight against the Covid-19 virus.

“We have been lighting the Pier up every night, so that those essential front-line workers - many of whom are potentially putting themselves at greater risk - know that we appreciate what they are doing for us all every single day.

The Pier - like many businesses in the hospitality and leisure sector - reluctantly took the decision to close on March 20 in response to Government guidelines in order to help stop the spread of the disease and support social distancing.

“It was with great sadness that we had to close the Pier until further notice, but as the Prime Minister said this week, while the lockdown and social distancing measures are extremely difficult for many people, they are making a difference.

Over the past few weeks, grateful people across the nation have been showing their appreciation for NHS workers and others by taking part in a round of applause every Thursday night.

“We can’t wait to re-open our gates and welcome people back to the Grand Pier but the most important thing of all right now is that everyone plays their part in beating this virus, so we would urge people to listen to, and heed, the Government’s advice.

This has also seen key landmarks - like the London Eye - be bathed in blue light as a show of appreciation.

Michelle Michael, Director of the Grand Pier, said: “We wanted to let all the key workers in our area know that we are very aware that they are sacrificing so much in order to keep the rest of us safe, and we can’t express just how grateful we are.

“The least we can do is to bathe our pavilion in blue light, so that any of those people carrying out essential roles can see it on their way to and from their work, and will know that their efforts are so appreciated.

“We would like to thank everyone who has sent us messages of support over the past few weeks.

“We have the most amazing, loyal customers. We also need to thank our staff for being so supportive over this time of uncertainty.

Bristol death café takes talk online People in the Bristol area have the chance to go online and discuss everything to do with death and dying in the area’s first-ever Virtual Death Café next month.

The event has been organised

by Bristol Memorial Woodlands as a way to support conversations about grief, dying and end of life at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has brought mortality to the forefront of everyone’s mind.

Death Cafés, where people, often strangers, meet in cafés to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death, have taken place worldwide but the online event on Saturday May 16 from 10.45 am for 90 minutes is open exclusively to people in the Bristol area.

The Virtual Death Café , on May 16, will see a group directed discussion about death with no agenda led by Mireille Hayden of Gentle Dusk, with the aim of increasing awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.

Mireille said: “Death Cafes were first held in the UK in 2011 by my colleasgue Jon Underwood and have since spread all over the world with over 10,000 now having been held in 63 different countries.

Jon died in 2017 but his family have continued its development.

“At this time when people are faced with deaths every day because of Covid-19 it is more important than ever that we have proper discussions about all the issues that we have about death and dying.

Even though people are in their own homes it is important to reach out and have these discussions and talk about our concerns.

“We have limited numbers that can join in the event so people need to pre-book, but we intend to have discussions as we do in any other Death Café.”

People who work in end of life care or jobs associated with death and dying are also welcome.

The Virtual Death Café is being held to coincide with Good Grief, Bristol, a festival of events throughout the city on loss and Dying Matters week led by Hospice UK. Bristol Memorial Woodlands, just north of Bristol is a regional funeral centre where funerals are held followed by burials and tree planting to create a natural woodland held in trust for future generations. Families can mourn their loved ones in a woodland setting and how people grieve and remember their loved ones will form part of the discussion.

Christopher Baker, who created Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “Death is inevitable for all of us and yet there is still a taboo around talking about it. We should all be discussing what we want to happen to our bodies after we die; what sort of funeral we would like to have and our hopes and fears around death.

“We are pleased in these turbulent times to be hosting this event where people can discuss aspects of dying.”

For those who exercise regularly, the benefits of a daily workout are well known. But what about those people that struggle to find time in their working week to exercise, why should they start now?

The benefits of exercise are many and experts believe that the fitter and healthier a person is, the better chance they have of fighting of viruses and diseases.

But there’s more. Maintaining physical activity can prevent muscle loss, keep your heart and lungs healthy and improve your mental wellbeing.

Lots of time has been spent and are still researching the benefits of exercise (in particular running) with those suffering from depression with great results.

Such as Yoga, weights, toning, stretching or even dancing.

Studies suggest that aerobic fitness can be as effective as anti-depressants, why? A lot of it, of course, has to do with the endorphins that our bodies release, but there’s further evidence to suggest that running causes long-term structural changes in our brain.

· Map your fitness schedule and keep it visible

Not everyone is able physically to run, but there are still plenty of ways you can improve your overall physical activity, either during your one hour outside or within your home. Remember fitness needs to be become a lifestyle, and not a chore.

· Avoid giving yourself a postexercise treat.

It may be difficult to start if you haven’t been active in a long time but starting some good habits now will make it much easier to find time in your schedule when life starts getting back to normal. How wonderful would it be if we were all healthier and fitter after Spring 2020? Now that would be something positive to hold on to.

Did you know mowing the lawn counts?

You could print out your own exercise plan and tick them each time you complete a day. Or map your distance on your walks and see how far you can travel in one hour.

You may feel you’ve earned that extra treat, but the reward is in getting fitter and healthier, don’t fall back into bad habits. · Keep realistic goals.

You can’t go from couch to 5k in a day unless you build up your fitness slowly. Find a realistic plan that you can achieve and stick to it. · Finally, don’t quit.

Some days are definitely harder than others, but you will feel 100% better after a workout, even if it’s just spending five minutes walking briskly around your garden.

10-DAY EXERCISE PLAN

There’s no pressure to do these exercises every day, you can mix it up with running, walking and cycling or challenge yourself everyday by increasing the exercise you see fit.

Day 1 Stand behind a steady, solid chair (not one with wheels), and hold on to the back of it. Lift up your right foot and balance on your left foot. Hold that position for as long as you can, then switch feet.

The goal should be to stand on one foot without the help of the chair and try to achieve standing on each foot for a minute with no assistance.

Day 2 This is strength training exercise for everyone can make your bottom and lower back stronger.

Stand behind a chair, slowly lift your right leg straight back and try not bend your knees or point your toes. Hold that position for one second, then gradually bring your leg back down. Repeat this on both legs 10 to 15 times.

Day 3 You might read this and wonder, “how is walking an exercise to improve balance? This exercise makes your legs stronger, which enables you to walk without falling. Put your right foot in front of your left foot so that the heel of your right foot touches the top of your toes of your left foot. Move your left foot in front of the right, putting your weight on your heel. Then, shift your weight to your toes. Repeat the step with your left foot. Walk this way for 20 steps.

Day 4 Stand with your feet apart, so that the space between them is the same width as your hips.

Make sure both feet are pressed into the ground firmly. Stand straight, with your head level. Then, transfer, your weight to your right foot and slowly lift your left leg off the ground. Hold that position for as long as possible (but no more than 30 seconds).

Slowly put your foot back onto the ground, transfer your weight to that foot. Slowly lift your opposite leg. Start doing this exercise for balance five times per side, then work your way up to more repetitions.

Day 5 Stand an arm’s length in front of a wall that doesn’t have any paintings, decorations, windows or doors. Lean forward slightly and put your palms flat on the wall at the height and width of your shoulders. Keep your feet planted as you slowly bring your body towards the wall. Gently push yourself back so that your arms are straight. Do twenty of these.

Day 6 Marching is a great balance exercise for everyone. If you need to hold onto something, do this exercise in front of a counter.

Standing straight, lift your right knee as high as you can. Lower it, then lift the left leg. Lift and lower your leg 20 times.

Day 7 You’ll need a chair for this exercise. Imagine that you are standing in the centre of a clock. The number 12 is directly in front of you and the number 6 is behind you. Hold the chair with your left hand. Lift your right leg and extend your right arm so it’s pointing to the number 12. Next, point your arm towards the number three, and finally point it behind you at the number 6. Bring your arm back to the number three, and then to the number 12. Look straight ahead the whole time. Repeat this exercise twice per side.

Day 8 You’ll need a chair for this exercise to improve balance.

Stand behind the chair with your feet slightly apart Slowly lift your right leg to the side. Keep your back straight, your toe facing forward, and stare straight ahead. Lower your right leg slowly. Repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times per leg.

Day 9 This improves balance exercise for everyone and improves your physical coordination. Stand with your feet together and arms at your side next to a chair. Lift your left hand over your head. Then, slowly raise your left foot off the floor. Hold that position for ten seconds.

Repeat the same action on the right side.

Day 10 This strength training exercise also helps balance. You’ll need a chair or counter. Stand straight and put your arms in front of you. Raise yourself up on your toes as high as you can go, then gently lower yourself. Don’t lean too far forward. Lift and lower yourself 20 times.

Helpful business advice from Tony at TSA Another day another little trickle of information from the government but little on the financial front. We have had some practical help from other organisations though. Here's a link to the FSB https://www.fsb.org.uk/campaign/covid19.html and also ACAS, which should help you manage employee issues with the Corona Virus. We are processing payroll as I type this, but it's also a concern of many clients as to what they should say and do with their employees, who also want and need information.

So for employers I'd offer the following advice caveated by the fact that I'm not HR expert and if you are unsure on anything in relation to staffing issues you should contact an HR expert right away: 1) This is a stressful time, so keep employees up to date. Ensure you have an up to date mobile number and e-mail address. Tell them when they can next expect to hear from you, even if you don't have much to say to them.

2) This next point is tough as we don't yet have the detail, but let them know what you are planning to do with their wages going forward. i.e. pay their march salaries, Furlough them (check your employment contracts) and make use of the government job retention scheme when it's up and running. So for example, some employers have guaranteed full pay for 8 weeks in the hope that the job retention scheme will be up and running by then. Others have advised there are no guarantees and if need be work for someone else in the interim.

Self-employed - I know many of you are concerned about the absence of any meaningful help on the self-employed community. All I can say is that the government have acknowledged that this needs to be addressed and are under massive pressure to do so.

Loans and Grants - There is help and details on this that I've already shared. Again, we've had a lot of requests on this and we can help. However we do have to charge for our time on this and we a good few days away from starting the first application.
