Well here we go again folks!!

Lockdown 2.0 as its been dubbed is officially underway. And what a shamble it has been leading up to this moment in time. We should have gone into lockdown back in October when the kids broke up from school to reduce the spread of the virus, instead Boris and his wrecking crew decided against the whole idea with stating he does not want to go into another lockdown. Well that changed didn’t it quite quickly after leaked documents got out in the early hours of last Saturday. However, I was glad to see on the 5th November that the furlough scheme has been extended to March 31st, 2021 which Is a small blessing for the hospitality sector which has been hit the hardest during this whole pandemic we have had this year. Still one thing to look forward to this year is Black Friday which needless to say will be an online affair on the 27th November and I expect a lot of sites to crash during the mad dash to the check-out online for those amazing deals...NOT. Till next week stay safe and well Bristol.

Out and About in Brislington West with Jos and Andrew Covid-19 Update Unfortunately, with the number of cases increasing dramatically, the government has announced new lockdown measures starting on Thursday 5 November. We want local people to know that we are here to help in any way we can. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need support. At the start of the last lockdown in March, we set up an online application form for people needing help, and also for those volunteering to help, for the whole of Greater Brislington. We were able to arrange support for several dozen local residents such as getting shopping and prescriptions, arranging dog walking, organising telephone ‘buddies’ and even setting up a laundry service! This scheme is still in place and can be accessed here: https://forms.gle/ JXiaQeEowNU8p7kf7. Alternatively, you can use the city-wide scheme, We are Bristol, by calling 0800 694 0184. In addition to setting up this online scheme, during March and April we made over two thousand telephone calls to older and more vulnerable residents right across Brislington West. Jos said, ‘We were worried some of the most vulnerable people in our ward might not have internet access or might be reticent about completing an online form’. We have now decided to start making follow-up calls commencing this week to check in on people and make sure their circumstances haven’t changed. Together we can get through this.

The good news is, we now have new signage on the main routes through the space so that riders are fully aware that it is against Bristol City Council bylaws. However, with issues like this there has to be a multi-faceted approach and we want to see more police bikes for South Bristol and better enforcement of existing rules, education about the dangers of riding in the open space and of course the danger it is causing to pedestrians, families and their dogs, and the provision of alternative locations for riders. We will keep you updated on our progress.

Poppy Appeal & Brislington War Memorial Service We were delighted to spend Saturday afternoon in Tesco Extra on Callington Road, helping the Royal British Legion with this year’s Poppy Appeal. We were both amazed by people’s incredible generosity with several making huge donations. Steven, one of the poppy sellers, told us that this year they are on target to break all previous records in terms of the volume of donations. In just one week, the Brislington Tesco team have raised around £9,000! As you may know, we’ve spent the last few weekends cleaning up and restoring our Brislington War Memorial.

This week we will be decorating it with hundreds of knitted poppies donated by our local churches and local residents. Together with our Brislington East colleague, Cllr. Tony Carey, we had also organised a Stockwood Open Space Success Remembrance Service for Sunday 8 Back in the summer, we wrote about the inNovember with local preachers and a bugler crease in the number of motorbikes using the to play the Last Post. Obviously, this now area, which was posing a risk for other users, cannot go ahead, but if you are passing by, not to mention the continuous droning, which please feel free to remember The Fallen by was having a significant, detrimental effect on yourself. We will leave the poppy decorations local residents. We arranged a meeting with in place during lockdown. Stockwood councillor, Graham Morris, the local police and the Council’s parks team to discuss the issue and try to find a resolution. 4

eScooters: A Missed Opportunity Last week saw the launch of the eScooter trial for Bristol. It’s being billed as a low-carbon alternative form of transport to get around Bristol. Unfortunately, you can only use them in the central area so they are unlikely to encourage the vast majority of Bristolians to change their travelling habits. To really make a difference, they need to be available at our park and ride sites and other key suburban locations so that people have a real choice in how they travel. We’ll be asking the Mayor about the possibility of extending the coverage of the scheme at the next Full Council meeting because as it stands, it’s a missed opportunity and the eScooters are likely to end up as nothing more than a novelty for tourists.

Lockdown will mean many of our local shops having to close their doors for a month. Please continue to support the local shops that can stay open as much as possible. #SupportLocal William Hill have been having difficulty with their waste contractors leading to unsightly, overflowing commercial bins on the corner of Repton and Sandy Park. We’ve asked them to sort out this problem as soon as possible as it’s quite an eyesore and unfair on local residents living opposite. SPLAT (Sandy Park Locals and Traders) is a new local group working hard to raise funds to light up Sandy Park this Christmas. Andrew said, ‘The Mayor refused to help when I asked him to fund lights a couple of years ago so I’m really pleased local traders and residents have got together to sort it themselves’. They are still a little short of their target so please give generously if you can. There are collection tins in many of the shops and also a Gofundme page if you wish to donate online. https://www.gofundme.com/f/sandy-parkchristmas-lights

Sand Hill Community Garden is a new project we’ve been working on with Bristol City Council, Bristol Tree Forum and local residents over the last month or so. We believe the long neglected and litter-strewn grassy verge between Sand Hill and Sandy Park Bridge could become an attractive space full of flowers and shrubs in a part of Brislington with little greenery. Unfortunately, our Sandy Park Round-up application for trees has been turned down Lloyd’s Pharmacy have unfortunately now due to concerns over the bridge foundations closed down, which is sad news for our but we have got permission for shrubs and premier shopping street and for local residents who depended on the services they flowers. Of course, Lockdown means we are unable to organise a community planting provided. The nearest Lloyd’s is now event this year but we are hopeful that we can Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle. Sad do so next year. In the meantime, we plan to ly, as we pointed out in an article in plant some daffodils over the few days to give September, this is unlikely to be an us all some much-needed colour in the spring. isolated case due to cuts in funding from If anyone has any bulbs going spare, we’d central government. love to take them off your hands.

Which are the best at limiting the spread of Covid? There are some fabric face coverings on sale in supermarkets and high-street pharmacies could be giving people a false sense of security by letting the vast majority of large particles pass through them, an investigation by the consumer magazine Which? has revealed. Researchers tested three masks that failed to capture 93% of bacterial particles, meaning that these particles could be inhaled or exhaled by the mask wearer. However, it was found that the bestperforming face coverings were as good as surgical masks at blocking bacterial particles, preventing more than 99% of them from penetrating the fabric.

6

Although reusable fabric masks are not intended to block ultra-fine particles such as viruses, they are designed to trap larger respiratory droplets and aerosols which the wearer breathes, coughs or spits out, so can minimise the transmission of any virus particles that they contain. With face coverings now such an important part of daily life they not only need to be durable and comfortable, but also provide effective filtration from harmful particles in order to keep us and others safe The researchers looked at a range of popular brands and styles of face coverings on sale in the UK, testing them for breathability, durability and comfort as well as the ability to filter bacteria.

STALKING VICTIMS FACE NEW DIGITAL THREAT The recent case of a stalking victim whose harasser took control of her online life has sparked expert lawyers to warn of new dangers and call for more robust legislation. Cody Russell, from Torquay, was jailed for three years and four months after taking control of his ex-partner’s digital existence and sending explicit clips of her to her boss and family members. The 22-year-old’s actions caused his victim to lose two jobs and led to so much suffering she had to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act after he gained control of her bank account, mobile and social media accounts. Family lawyers along with expert IT lawyers have come together to warn that the damage caused by this new digital threat to stalking and domestic abuse victims is evolving and say the law should reflect the seriousness of the offence.

Susan points out that although this particular offender was arrested for several offences, before 2015 there would have been no sanction for sending explicit photos and before before 2012 there was no offence of stalking.” In this case Russell was warned by the police and arrested but repeatedly continued to stalk his victim as soon as he was released. Chris Longbottom, a partner and head of the family law team also at Clarke Willmott LLP, says there are ways people can protect themselves using the law. “When it comes to injunctions, there are two orders the Court can grant,” said Chris. “The first is a non-molestation order which aims to protect individuals from injury, intimidation and pestering and can also be extended to cover social media and digital harassment. It also prevents abusers from using a third party to act on behalf of the abuser.

“The second is an occupation order which means the abuser cannot come within a set Susan Hall, a partner and IT law specialist at distance of the accuser. Developers becomes first major national housebuilder to have its science- based carbon reduction targets approved Barratt Developments, which is currently building more than 8,000 much needed new homes across the South West, has become the first major national housebuilder to have its science-based carbon emissions targets officially approved. The company, which owns Barratt and David Wilson Homes, took the lead for the housebuilding industry back in February, announcing its commitment to reduce direct carbon emissions by 29% by 2025 and to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its own operations by 2040. These targets have now been approved by the steering committee of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The SBTi commended Barratt on its ambitious 1.5°C-aligned target, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. The housebuilder will reduce its direct carbon emissions from its business operations (its offices and building sites) by 29% by 2025. To achieve these ambitious targets on site, Barratt will cut its direct emissions by first focusing on reducing diesel use in generators, vehicles and plant machinery.

16

Barratt will also cut its indirect carbon emissions (those coming from its homes and from its supply chain) by 24% per square metre by 2030. Building lower carbon homes and using more sustainable materials will be a key part of achieving this target.

In June, Barratt announced that it will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its own operations by 2040 - becoming the first major housebuilder to make this commitment. It will also deliver new zero carbon standard house types from 2030 and ensure that 100% of the electricity that it purchases will be renewable by 2025. Ian Menham, West regional director for Barratt Developments, which is currently building 36 new communities across the South West said: "We are proud to be building 8,000 new homes across the South West and are committed to playing our part in the UK's green recovery, so we're delighted that our science-based targets have been approved. We believe every business needs to take responsibility to tackle climate change and we will continue to work with all our stakeholders to safeguard the environment."

Bristol hoteliers say furlough isn’t enough for second lockdown Hoteliers in Bristol say the Government should do more to support them during the forthcoming second lockdown to help cover their essential running costs. The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) says the extension of the furlough scheme – and the return to the Government paying 80 percent of wages – is very welcome. But many businesses will still find the new lockdown – due to last until December 4 at least – very challenging because of ongoing costs that they have. BHA Chair Raphael Herzog said: “Bristol hotels ran at around 50 percent occupancy in October, which was encouraging. “But now we are being forced to close our hotels again and were comforted a little by the news about the furlough scheme, but this is the very least that the Government can do.

“This uncertainty and lack of clarity makes it very difficult for us to plan ahead, so any further support that we can get from the Government will be a huge help towards giving our businesses a better chance of surviving.” He added that the hospitality sector’s case for further support is strengthened even further because the industry is being targeted despite evidence suggesting that it is responsible for only a small percentage of traceable infections outside the home. He said: “Public Health England statistics for week 44 showed that food outlets and restaurants accounted for just two percent of traceable infections. “Schools and universities account for 22 percent – nearly a quarter – of traceable infections, yet we are being instructed to close and they are allowed to remain open.”

He added: “I expect around a dozen hotels will “We still have to retain staff to keep our try to stay open to support people who need to buildings secure, to answer the phones and travel for work.” deal with enquiries, maintain the grounds and ensure that the hotels are regularly cleaned. He urged people to follow the Government guidelines, no matter how inconvenient or “We will have no revenue coming in, yet we difficult it might be, so that the lockdown have to pay for the staff and that’s not even restrictions can be eased as soon as possible. thinking about all the other regular outgoings, like maintenance and building contracts, He also referred to reports of around 700 electricity, pumps for the pool and so on. Looking after your car in winter

Taking extra care during the winter months to make sure that your car is running on top form can prevent any unnecessary damage. It’s important to make regular health checks to not only ensure the safety of your vehicle but also to save you money too. Here at Direct Local we’ve put together some practical tips for looking after your car during the winter months.

Get a service

If your car is due a service, then it’s worth getting it booked in now before the cold weather hits. Many vehicle-related problems that motorists experience during winter can easily be prevented by undertaking regular servicing and maintenance checks.

Engine

Anyone who drives a car will know how important it is to make sure that your oil is always topped up. If your car hasn’t been driven in a while, there’s a chance that oil will have dripped down to the bottom of the drain pan, leaving your cylinders dry. There is an easy way to resolve this problem and that is to ‘fog the engine’. This basically means using a specially formulated spray containing petroleum that will keep your engine lubricated and prevent corrosion. The best way to do this is to start the engine, remove the air filter and spray into the air intake of each cylinder. Once you have done this, leave the engine on for a further 10 seconds and turn it off. Finally, remove the spark plugs and spray your fog oil into each cylinder before replacing them.

Also, it might be worth checking out your local garages to see if they offer discounted or free winter car checks for extra peace of mind if you’re on a budget.

Tyres

Battery

Your battery will be used a lot more during winter with the increased use of lights, demister and heater so ensuring that it’s working correctly should be your number one priority. Most car batteries have a life span of five years so it’s important to get it checked out straight away if you notice any issues. The last thing you want is to be caught out during a long journey and end up having your car recovered. 20

Keep an eye on your tyres to make sure that there are no signs of wear and tear as well as any damage caused by potholes or debris from the road. Don’t forget to test your tyre pressure either. Low pressure will not only shorten the life of the tyre but can decrease your fuel efficiently meaning you will be spending more cash at the garage. It’s also extremely important to ensure your tread depth is at least 1.6mm, which is the legal requirement on UK roads. A simple way of checking is by doing the 20p test. Insert a 20 pence piece into your tread and if your tyre comes above the outer band of the coin, then it’s above the legal limit.

Antifreeze

A common mistake most people make is to top their coolant with water during winter rather than anti-freeze. Engine coolant should always be a 50/50 mix to ensure that it doesn’t freeze in the cold weather. If this happens, then there is a chance that the engine can overheat leaving you with a big repair bill.

Bodywork

Salt corrosion can be one of the more expensive issues to get fixed at a garage if you don’t take preventative measures. When dealing with minor corrosion, give the area a good clean with warm soapy water or try using a bit of white vinegar on an old tea towel to give it a good wipe down. Either one of these two ways will work and help stop the damage spreading. If the corrosion is more severe then you may have to take a trip to your local hardware shop to buy some rust and corrosion remover. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the product, and this may save you a costly trip to the mechanic.

Be prepared Visibility

With daylight hours being considerably reduced, the car’s lights will be used more frequently. Making sure that all the bulbs are working and replacing any that aren’t will help keep yourself and other road users safe. Also, giving them a bit of a clean as well will increase visibility and can be done relatively easily. If you have any chips in your windscreen, have these looked at now, as the cold weather can cause them to spread and crack further. Check that all windscreens are clean inside and out with the screen wash fully topped up.

Having an emergency breakdown kit in your car can be a real-life saver if the weather ever turns suddenly leaving you stranded or unable to get home. We recommend including a shovel, torch with spare batteries, blanket, hi-visibility vest, screen wash, scraper, de-icer, snow grips for your footwear, food and water. It’s always better to prepared just in case!

Help save hedgehogs this winter

Everyone loves helping hedgehogs to prepare for their winter hibernation by putting food out in their garden. Cat food and water are ideal to help fatten hedgehogs up to the minimum 450g they need to be to have the best chance of surviving hibernation. However, this doesn’t guarantee their survival. If you spot a hedgehog out in very cold weather that you think might be underweight or have health problems, you can contact a local hedgehog rescue centre such as Wild Hogs for advice. However, please be aware that hedgehogs don’t always hibernate for the whole of winter, they can go in and out of hibernation depending on the weather. One of the most important factors that is currently limiting hedgehog numbers is suitable hibernation habitat. Hedgehogs need different types of nests and locations for nesting throughout the year, they have different nesting needs for daytime, breeding and hibernation. An absence of the right kind of leaves and an appropriate supporting structure is probably why hedgehogs are absent from large coniferous forests, bogs, heaths and moors. Leaf size is an important factor for hedgehogs making hibernation nests, with leaves like oak, beech, hornbeam and lime being ideal. As well as suitable leaf sizes, hedgehogs need a supporting structure for the nest. This is often under thorny or stinging undergrowth, especially brambles, where hedgehogs will be better protected against predators. 26

As gardens and parks become ‘tidier’ with fallen leaves and brambles being cleared away; suitable nesting habitat for hedgehogs is becoming rarer. The provision of hedgehog boxes by kind residents can help increase suitable nesting spaces, although natural is always best. If you do have a hedgehog box in your garden ensure you are providing suitable bedding, ideally the right size fallen leaves, and research has shown that homemade boxes are preferred by hedgehogs than shop bought ones. More natural nesting habitat for hedgehogs would be the best gift you could give to them. When you’re next in your garden, take a look around and see if you’re able to leave a ‘messy’ corner for hedgehogs and other wildlife. Perhaps a pile of fallen leaves, and some bramble or other bushes. Many gardens don’t have the types of trees hedgehogs prefer, so why not link your garden up to other spaces that might be more suitable? This might be other gardens, or a local park. If hedgehogs can move between gardens to find food and suitable nesting sites then they have the best chance of surviving and thriving in urban areas. Do you have any suitable access holes for hedgehogs? If not could you make some? They should be at least 13cm square or the size of a CD case. Please record any existing or new hedgehog holes here so we can create a picture of hedgehog highways across the county. This will help us better protect hedgehogs and their habitats.

With its huge plate glass window, neon sign and colourful display Casa Brazil is an inviting and exciting place. You have to book! You may get lucky by getting a table off the street but I’d highly recommend you book. As the name suggests this is a Brazilian restaurant with all the trimmings. There’s lively music, elaborate decoration, food everywhere and fantastic cocktails flying round the place.

There’s two ways you can enjoy dinner at Casa Brazil. You can have the buffet and the buffet only. Which don’t get me wrong is delicious but you are limiting your options. Or you can be a meat loving, quantity consuming, pig and have their BBQ, buffet and dessert option. Which do you think I went for? That’s right I was the fat knacker in the corner shovelling rare beef and caramelised leg of lamb down my neck and stockpiling on the buffet bar! Plates are provided at the buffet station. 30

You help yourself up as much of the fresh salad, rice, fried fish and cheesy potatoes as you want. You’re given a little card. One side is green the other is red. Turn it to green and the waiter will bring round the best BBQ you will ever taste in your life. If you turn the card to red then the waiters bypass your table as this signals that you need a breather! All the meats are delicious. The cheesy belly pork is something else. It might not sound that great but trust me it works. The leg of lamb, succulent and juicy. After we had had our fill it was time to move onto dessert. The pudding trolley is not overloaded but after gorging on all of that rich BBQ then you don’t need a great deal after.

This place is a hidden gem in Bristol’s crown. It’s well worth coming into the city just for this. I’d recommend this place to anyone that wants really really good food, who likes the buffet experience and wants to try something completely different. I’ll definitely be going back I suggest you do also.

What you can and can't do duing lockdown 2 England is to be placed under stricter nationwide restrictions from today in an attempt to slow down the spread of coronavirus. The new restrictions will initially be imposed from 12.01am on 5 November until 2 December across the whole of England, with the plan to then ease them on a local and regional basis. These are the new restrictions for England: •

Visits to waste disposal or recycling centres are also allowed.

No mixing of different households inside homes, except for childcare and other support

International travel out of the UK banned, except for work

Avoid all non-essential travel by private or public transport

Hotels and hostels to remain open for people travelling for work and limited other reasons

What is the guidance for care home visits during the second lockdown? •

All care home residents can receive visits from friends and family. However, measures must be in place to ensure safety - such as floor to ceiling screens, visiting pods, and window visits

Outdoor visits with one other person are permitted, provided it can be accessed by the loved-one without going into the main building

The guidance allows care home providers, families and local professionals to work together to find the right balance between the benefits of visiting on wellbeing and quality of life, and the risk of transmission of COVID-19 to social care staff and vulnerable residents

Care homes are encouraged to arrange "virtual visits" using video calls

Hope this helps to clear things up a bit Bristol as to what we can and can not do during the second lockdown 35

BRISTOL MAN SHARES PERSONAL STORY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR MALE CANCER DURING MOVEMBER A CHAMPION JOCKEY and a budding entrepreneur from Bristol have formed an unlikely alliance to raise funds for prostate and testicular cancer during Movember. In the midst of lockdown earlier this year when COVID-19 was at its worst, 18 year old Mitchell Toulson from Bristol had a testicular scare that changed his life. In mid-May, Mitchell woke up one morning to find one of his testicles had swollen. He assumed he had slept awkwardly, but within hours his left testicle had grown to the size of an orange and he wasn’t able to walk. He panicked. His first thought was that he had testicular cancer. Fortunately, his mum took him straight to A&E and from there he was rushed into the operating theatre. The tubes to his left testicle had twisted, cutting off the blood supply. The doctors decided that they had no choice but to remove the offending testicle or he ran the risk of losing the other one. The missing testicle was replaced with a prosthetic. Although Mitchell initially suffered a loss of body confidence he was relieved that he hadn’t contracted the dreaded cancer, and is determined to pay his good fortune forward.

“They will remind men to be diligent,” he adds. More men are now dying from prostate cancer each year than women are from breast cancer, making the male disease the third biggest cancer killer in the UK.

Mitchell continues: “I never knew that these are conversations we should be having, like Mitchell has teamed up with former top jockey knowing what your testicles should feel like.” Bob Champion to raise awareness and funds for male cancer during the week of Movember Bob Champion MBE says: “I am delighted to be involved with any initiative that encourages and he’s doing it in a most original way. awareness of male cancers, particularly tesHe explains: “Movember reminds men of the ticular, as let’s face it we men aren’t so good importance of checking their parts. Men never about going to the doctors if we find a lump or something is worrying us. check, but they absolutely should. “I came across these edible accessories for the testicles and thought that they could act as a fun reminder to men to check out their tackle. “The edible ball bands taste fruity and are designed to improve and exaggerate your manhood while also raising funds for research into male cancer undertaken by the Bob Champion Cancer Trust - https://www. bobchampion.org.uk/ 38

“Early diagnosis is so important and we have to keep the awareness conversation going.” Mitchell says he had no experience of being in a hospital and was completely caught off guard by the testicular complications he suffered. “More than three out of four suicides are committed by men, too, so Movember is a great reminder to stay in touch with your mates and to be open to talking,” he says.

It is estimated that 8,000 to 10,000 men will develop testis cancer each year, so the chance of developing testis cancer is about one in 270.

“The message to men is: You need to check your balls! The Ball Bands only cost £3.99 and can be purchased through www.mrspalmer. co.uk,” adds Mitchell.

Fortunately, the cure rate is excellent - greater than 95 percent for all men with testis cancer.

20/20 Challenge As a Bristol business you will know how important it is to be involved in the community. By answering our 20/20 Challenge your business will help drive our projects this year and beyond. Community of Purpose is seeking 20 local businesses to donate ÂŁ1,000 each towards the cost of a new vehicle which would be used for our Break Free school holidays scheme and Bristol Together Championships. Break Free

Bristol Together Championships

In partnership with Youth Moves, based in one of the most deprived areas in Bristol, we run a programme that delivers a range of accessible activities at the same time as alleviating holiday hunger.

Bristol Together Championships is about crossing boundaries. Using the universal language of football to help community cohesion by getting boys and girls crossing the race, class, geographical and faith boundaries that characterise life in the city.

Our team take a mobile sports village into the poorest neighbourhoods of South Bristol to deliver free activities during school holiday periods.

Primary schools are twinned with other schools from totally different communities to their own. Together they form a joint team and compete at an annual tournament.

Our trained staff will also provide the young people with breakfast & lunch so that they get at least two meals throughout the day.
