BRISTOL OPEN DOORS EXPLORER LAUNCHES THIS WEEKEND

Bristol Open Doors is back this weekend, but not as you know it. This year the city-wide festival is offering you the chance to explore the city with your own ‘Explorer wristband’ that allows you to choose from over 60 specially curated experiences. There will be 10,000 ‘adventures’ taking place across the city – so something for every taste! The programme boasts a huge range of experiences to choose from, whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in audio tours, such as the Queer Bristol Tour, take a ride on a boat (the weather is set to be scorching), learn more about the Changing Harbour, Upfest, discover the history of Motion by daylight, tour Circomedia, Puppet Place or take an atmospheric audio tour in the Redcliffe Caves. This year the festival features theatre performances at Ashton Court ‘Show of Strength’ -where audiences can explore a moment at home with the Smyths. From high born to low born, from Civil War to Second, World War and from first resident Hugh Smyth to Esme Smyth. Follow the Smyth’s and their servants through 400 years of Bristolian history. Full of family secrets, buried treasure and impostors, beautiful Ashton Court will never look the same again! The Bristol Open Doors ‘Explorer wristband’ allows you to choose up to 4 of the 67 experiences which will keep you busy all 4weekend.

Anna Rutherford, Director at Bristol Open Doors explains; “It’s been a busy lockdown for us, working with audio designers, artists and historians to create a living history of the city’s spaces, to be explored by socially distanced groups. This year, for the safety of our brilliant audiences, venues and volunteers, all experiences must be pre-booked online which allows us to keep group numbers safe. We're excited that this year's programme gets you behind the scenes of some of Bristol's cultural icons with plenty of surprises!” All of the events from this year's incredible programme have been designed to ensure audiences feel safe and will each have a bookable time slot, with lots of experiences being outdoors, including 5 immersive audio tours, boat tours, and outdoor theatre. It’s never been easier to be a tourist in the city for the weekend, and thanks to First Bus, you can now travel easily between venues as your ‘Explorer wristband’ entitles you to free travel across the city during Bristol Open Doors. Anna continues with: “After an incredibly challenging few years for the heritage and culture sector, we’re supporting venues to re-open this September, and are asking audiences to join us in showing our city some love.

Bristol Open Doors is organised by a charity and runs on a not-for-profit basis. Creativity and culture is at the heart of Bristol. This year we’ve worked with our city’s creatives to bring our Heritage to life.” Included in this year's programme is the chance to tour Temple Church and see at close the specialist conservation that is happening. The leaning tower and walls of this large late medieval church survived bombing during the second world war. Tour the internal space led by historic experts and discover how the work will protect the building’s history and hear about the building’s unique features including the aumbry & rere dos, repairs to stonework and the stone tracery of the windows. Explorer wristbands are on sale for this year’s festival, and once purchased, you will then be able to book up to 4 experiences using your unique code. Head to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to find out more, or visit www.bristolopendoors.org.uk

What does Boris Johnson’s social care plans mean for you

The prime minister has announced controversial reforms to England's social care system which will mean a national insurance rise across the UK. Boris Johnson has announced tax hikes for millions of people to fund social care and the NHS – and the move has not proved popular. The prime minister announced the national insurance rise in parliament on Tuesday, but Labour leader Keir Starmer has ruled out backing the hike, and so too have members of the prime minister’s own party. Here’s everything we know so far. So, what’s happening? Boris Johnson announced an overhaul of the social care system in England to MPs on Tuesday. It follows the £5.4bn cash injection announced on Monday to tackle the NHS backlogs caused by Covid, which will be spread out over the next six months. The PM wants to raise £36bn through increased national insurance contributions, rising by 1.25 percentage points as a health and social care levy. It’s a decision that goes against his manifesto “guarantee” and has angered members of his own party. 6

Meetings to discuss the plans apparently took place between the PM, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid over the weekend, and Downing Street confirmed on Tuesday morning that the Cabinet had approved the proposals. The proposals, to take effect in April 2022, will include a cap of around £86,000 on how much a person will pay, but might not include accommodation costs for those in residential care homes. Johnson also announced that people with assets worth less than £20,000 will not have to pay for their social care, while those with assets worth between £20,000 and £100,000 could qualify for some means-tested financial support. Cash raised will be focused on the NHS, the prime minister said, but highlighted the need to integrate health care and social care. “You can’t fix the Covid backlogs without giving the NHS the money it needs, and you can’t fix the NHS without fixing social care,” he said. “You can’t fix social care without removing the fear of losing everything to pay for social care, and you can’t fix health and social care without long-term reform.”

What’s the problem? Unlike the rate of income tax, which rises once you earn £50,000, national insurance falls at the same point. That means increasing it will have a proportionally smaller impact on the highest earners. It is not currently paid by pensioners, but the plans involve a new system which requires pensioners who are in work to start paying the health and social care levy from April 2023, a year after the tax hike will first be introduced. It is at this point national insurance payments and the levy will start appearing separately on pay slips. Some critics warned the proposals will mean young, low-paid workers paying for the care for wealthy elderly people. But it is important to note an estimated 2.1 million people above state pension age are already living in poverty, and young people with long-term health problems and disabilities are also cared for through the system. The national insurance hike means an extra £100 a year to be paid by aound two million households on low incomes who receive universal credit or working tax credit, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) said. The extra cost “adds insult to injury” for families facing a “historic” reduction in their benefit payments when the government cuts universal credit by £1,040 a year on October 6, said Peter Matejic, deputy director of evidence and impact for JRF. “With inflation rising, the cost of living going up and an energy price rise coming in October, many struggling families are wondering how on earth they will be expected to make ends meet from next month,” he added. The social care reforms will only apply to England, but everyone across the UK will be hit by the national insurance rise. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will get an extra £2.2bn for health and social care, Johnson told MPs. The 2019 Conservative manifesto promised a “long-term solution” to issues in the social care system. But it also said: “We promise not to raise the rates of income tax, national insurance or VAT. “This is a tax guarantee that will protect the incomes of hard-working families across the next parliament.”

How much will it cost me? The 1.25 percentage point increase in national insurance payments will take it from 12 per cent to 13.25 per cent for low to average earners. People on higher incomes pay less national insurance, meaning their payments would rise from 2 per cent to 3.25 per cent. Someone earning £20,000 per year currently pays £1,251 annually in national insurance payments. The proposals would add £130 to their bill each year. This rises to an extra £505 for people on salaries of £50,000, making their annual national insurance payments £5,356. Are there any alternatives? Opposition MPs and trade unions want the government to tax the rich more before asking lower earners to contribute more from their pay packets. The Trades Union Congress called for a rise in capital gains tax – a fee paid on the profit someone makes from selling assets worth £6,000 or more, such as property – which the organisation said could raise £17bn per year for social care and go some way to funding a £10 per hour minimum wage for staff. The prime minister said capital gains tax raises less in total than this new levy will raise, adding that the highest earning 14 per cent of people will pay around half of what is raised through the tax increase. Lisa Nandy, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, told Sky News the party was open to a so-called wealth tax to plug the gap in social care funding. Increasing tax paid by millionaires by one per cent would raise £260bn within five years, according to the London School of Economics. Removing the upper earnings limit on national insurance contributions – meaning the wealthiest 15 per cent of tax payers contribute more – could raise £11.1bn for the NHS, the New Economics Foundation said. But what do you think should happen to reform our social care industry? After all we all pay taxes throughout our working lies, so shouldn’t we all get the benefits. Rather than pointing the finger at the wealthy or the poor. Why can’t the government step up this time? 7

Love saved the day last weekend!

Attendances were approx 10,000 Friday, 21,000 Saturday and 19,000 Sunday

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves at Love Saves the Day Festival on the Downs last weekend. The festival consisted of one main stage that gathered large crowds to listen to the upbeat music on Saturday, we also had the benefits of having another 3 smaller stages, that were equally as good the main stage, with the DJ’s and UK artists performing their music sets to some awesome light shows and flames spewing from the stage. It was a pleasure to see that the festival and team had considered a number of extra facilities that would be needed to cater for the mass gathering of over 50,000 festival-goers over the 3 day weekend, by having additional toilets and bins located on Durham Downs. All the staff were friendly and very helpful throughout the weekend. We were also delighted with the number of local stalls and businesses there was that people were supporting by buying or using their services in the festival. Safety was at the heart of the festival along with lateral flow testing being required 10 twenty-four hours before arriving.

Overall it was a spectacular event for everyone, the sunshine and great music was a joy to attend, when we spoke to some of the people in the festival they said: They came as far away as Leeds to enjoy this amazing concert and did not want to miss out on some of the normality that we are getting back in to this year.

Team Love’s Tom Paine has released the following statement about the weekend: Wow. We've had such an amazing and rejuvenating weekend on the Downs with the IDLES and Love Saves The Day Festival. We had amazing crowds of smiling happy people, beautiful weather and some jaw-dropping performances from musicians and bands, the pictures and videos from the weekend speak for themselves. We've certainly all waited a while to be able to put on our shows again and it's been such a great feeling to do so again for all of us, our staff and crew, freelancers, musicians, DJs, security, bar teams and the 1000s of other people who work on the show. We are already making plans for 2022 which will see us return to the usual date of May/June. We will be looking to relaunch the Downs Concerts for September 2022 whilst Love Saves moves to a new home. More information to follow. 11

Bathscape Walking Festival adds more events

Bathscape Walking Festival has expanded its programme with the addition of several short wellbeing walks and a handful of activity walks aimed at families, including the ever-popular bat walks. Wellbeing walks are an essential part of Bathscape’s work. They offer people the chance to increase their fitness or socialise as part of a small friendly group. The weekly hour-long walks are usually less than a mile and perfect for gentle exercise. Walking is one of the simplest things to do, for pleasure or to commute, that reduces our carbon footprint. The walks in the festival are nearly all accessible by public transport and many of them allow walkers to explore and deepen their understanding of nature. Councillor Sarah Warren, deputy leader and cabinet member for Climate and Sustainable Travel said: “Walking is at the heart of sustainable travel and it is important to make it easier for people to venture out by offering guided walks and waymarked paths. In Bath it is possible to walk from city to countryside in under an hour while marvelling at the surrounding landscape, while North East Somerset boasts several equally impressive but less well-known gems of nature and heritage.” In contrast to the short wellbeing walks, the Circuit of Bath walk, which has been improved and waymarked during the summer by a team of volunteers from Cotswold Voluntary Wardens and the local Ramblers, is a 20-mile route with stunning views. 14

For a real challenge, the Circuit of Bath can be walked in a day. Local charity Julian House, which supports vulnerable and at-risk individuals across South West England, has been encouraging people to do so for the last 20 years. The route, which was previously not waymarked, has been central to the charity’s annual fundraising objectives. This year’s fundraising walk will be the final event of the festival on Sunday, 26 September. Tickets are still available. For more information about the Circuit of Bath sponsored walk to fundraise for Julian House, please visit https://www.circuitofbathwalk. co.uk/ or visit www.julianhouse.org.uk . This year the Bathscape Walking Festival is running alongside Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Climate and Biodiversity Festival and we are delighted to be part of the event. For a full programme of events visit the festival webpage: https://beta.bathnes. gov.uk/climate-and-biodiversity-festival The Bathscape Scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The World Heritage Enhancement Fund, Network Rail, Bath & North East Somerset Council, and partner organisations. It has received funding of £2.2 million to cover its many different activities. You can find the programme of events for the Bathscape Walking Festival here: www.bathscapewalkingfestival.co.uk or email: lucy. bartlett@bathscape.co.uk.

The Choux Box Patisserie to open its first Bristol site next week The Choux Box Patisserie will open its first site in Bristol this month, bringing classic French patisserie with a twist and some sparkle to Wapping Wharf. Opening its doors on Friday 17th September, The Choux Box's new home will be within CARGO 2, Wapping Wharf's popular hub of converted shipping containers, housing an array of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and more. The Choux Box was founded by pastry chef and Somerset born Orlando Partner, and opened its first site in nearby Bath in October last year. Having worked as a pastry chef in Michelin-starred kitchens for over 10 years, Orlando decided to start The Choux Box, using his knowledge and expertise with a goal to make high quality patisserie fun. The Choux Box now plans to bring its "buns with personality" to Bristol, with its original Bath location and production kitchen remaining in place. 18

Visitors can expect to find a patisserie counter full of colourful classic choux buns and macarons, as well as delicious local coffee at The Choux Box's new Wapping Wharf home. A brand-new weekend special will be released each week. Limited edition flavours will include ‘The Chocolate Custard Choux-Nut', ‘Pistachio and Chocolate Mille-Feuille Choux' and ‘The Tirimi-Choux' to name a few Orlando Partner, founder of The Choux Box Patisserie, said: “We’re beyond excited to open up in Wapping Wharf; our very first site in Bristol. We cannot wait to share our delicious patisserie and to try out some incredible new flavours with the people of Bristol and the Wapping Wharf community.”.

The Choux Box works closely with local South-West suppliers, with everything used in the choux buns being sourced from within a 20 mile radius of their production kitchen, located in Bath.

Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle businesses.

Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, said: "A big welcome to The Choux Box Patisserie. It's sure to be a hit with Bristol customers and a great fit with the Wapping Wharf community too. We're very pleased that Orlando and his team have chosen our growing neighbourhood as their first Bristol home and we wish them all the best with their exciting new venture." The Choux Box will be taking one of the units formerly home to Loop Massage, which is relocating from CARGO 2 to a bigger unit on the ground floor of Hope Quay along Rope Walk, also at Wapping Wharf. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre.

Simple ways to stop your pets destroying your home Adopting a new pet is incredibly exciting, however it's important you pet-proof your home to minimise any damage. From hiding away scented candles to trimming your canine's nails, there are plenty of great hacks to help you protect your space.

4. CREATE A COSY SPACE FOR PETS Give your pet a cosy, relaxing spot to unwind at home. Whether it's their own den or a soft bed, this will help them to give them a place to feel settled.

MAKE SURE YOUR PETS ARE WELL EXERCISED Full of energy and life, our pets need regular exercise to keep them stimulated. Just like humans, pets too can get bored at home, which is why it’s vital to ensure they are entertained. “When dogs don’t have an appropriate outlet for this innate desire, it can lead to ‘problem’ behaviours that can cause damage in the home,” Rachel Rodgers, dog owner, says. “For some dogs, this may be digging which can manifest as ripping up soft furnishings like pillows, quilts and mattresses.”

5. REMOVE ANY AT-RISK ITEMS Nail scissors, tweezers, jewellery, medication or fragile vases can be easily discovered by inquisitive pets, especially young puppies. Keep anything like this well out of reach or tucked away in a drawer to prevent it being chewed on. Pets love to explore, so it’s up to you to keep an eye on what they might find. Pay close attention to places such as bedside cabinets, sideboards or small bathroom bins. 6. KEEP YOUR BEDROOM PET-FRIENDLY While a previous study found that sleeping with a dog in your room can improve your health, it’s important you do all you can to keep your bedroom pet-friendly.

To prevent any destructive behaviour, try giving your dog a ‘destruction box’ for them to rip up. Out and about this week in Brislington with Jos and Andrew

Callington Road Nature

.Lane clearance

Reserve Open Day:

We’ve organised with some local residents to tidy up the back alleyway between Bloomfield Road and Savoy Road this Friday 10 September. Unfortunately, an elderly resident recently tripped on some bind weed, fell and hurt her head. Luckily, she has made a full recovery but we’d like to make sure it doesn’t happen again. If you want to join us, we are meeting at 6pm at the entrance to the lane between 61 and 63 Savoy Road. Please bring your own shears or loopers.

Thank you to the organisers and everyone who came along to the Callington Road Nature Reserve Open Day. It was a beautiful day with plenty of activities including bramble bashing, litter picking, oiling the owl, a nature trail and bug identification. We also repainted a couple of the rusty, old signs. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do the pond dipping activity because the wooden platform had been vandalised during the week. However, we didn’t let the actions of a selfish few detract from an otherwise great day in the sunshine. Arnos Court Park community picnic: Another community event is taking place this Saturday, 11 September, when the Friends of Arnos Court Park will be holding an end of summer community picnic, weather permitting, starting at 11am. It’ll be a chance to meet up with other local people and find out more about the plans for our local park. We’ll bring along our litter pickers as well in case anyone fancies a clean-up! Please bring your own food and drink and something to sit on. 24

A4 corridor consultation: If you haven’t already, please consider participating in the consultation on the A4 Corridor Project, which closes this week, 10 September. This is your chance to have your say on an important project that will shape our area for decades to come. The survey includes sections on general travel behaviour, bus use, Park and Ride, cycling and walking and local shopping habits. You can skip questions that are not relevant to you and there is also space to add your own comments. As well as the survey, there is an interactive mapping tool where you make comments relating to specific locations. You can also see what other people have suggested and ‘like’ comments you agree with. The survey can be found on the Travel West website: https:// travelwest.info/projects/improvements-on-a4bristol-to-bath

Brislington Greenway planning application: Time is running out to make comments on the application for the temporary installation of shipping containers along part of the route of the former Brislington Railway Line, to be used as pop-up office spaces and workshops for local artists and craftspeople. This scheme includes paying for a footpath and cycle route from Sainsbury’s to Tesco, the missing link in the Sustran’s National Walking & Cycle Network, Route 3. There are currently 48 public comments on the planning portal, the overwhelming majority of which are fully supportive. We would encourage everyone to read the proposals and make comments: https://pa.bristol.gov.uk/online-applications/ applicationDetails.do?keyVal=QV9J2MDNLYO00&activeTab=summary&fbclid=IwAR0Ldm_KcNrLq8hhI_VFPg0xcJ3h-Ah97_RGFp541HATX4kqyD1mc9nVP9E Full Council: Both of your Brislington West councillors have submitted motions, questions and statements and will be making speeches at this week’s Full Council meeting. We’ll be asking about a new skatepark for Brislington, roll-out of EV charging infrastructure, the Voi scooter hire scheme and a new front garden tree scheme and more. Multimillion-pound contract awarded

North Somerset Council has named Sirona care & health as the winning bidder for its 0-19 Public Health Nursing Services and Healthy Child Programme contract, as the council continues its drive to improve outcomes for children and young people and tackle inequalities. The award of the the contract was approved at a meeting of the council’s Executive last night (Wednesday 8 September) and followed a competitive procurement process. Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council and executive member with responsibility for public health, said: “I’m pleased that following a competitive procurement process, we’re able to award this contract to Sirona care & health. “We’ll be working with Sirona as the current and future provider of the service, to transform the service into a new model which we hope will provide improved outcomes and experiences for families across North Somerset. “The key to Sirona’s proposed new model is the provision of a universal service to all families, with clear access routes to additional help and support when they need it. “We are committed to protecting the most vulnerable people in our communities and this is an example of where we can work with partners and families to support children and young people so they can achieve their full potential. This contract and approach will enable young people across our area to lead independent and fulfilling lives, while also focussing on tackling inequalities.” 30

Janet Rowse, Chief Executive of Sirona care & health, said: “We are delighted the plan to award the contract to Sirona has been approved. We believe this is great news for everyone involved and especially for the children, young people and families in North Somerset. We are looking forward to working with the Council, our staff and the local communities on the next phase of making these services even stronger.” The council currently has a contract with Sirona care & health to provide 0-19 public health nursing services to North Somerset children and their families until the end of March next year. Two organisations submitted initial tenders for the new contract. Sirona care & health were the highest scorer and therefore the winning bidder. There now follows a 10-day standstill period, a normal process following any procurement decision and the contract will be formally awarded after this time. The new contract will start on April 1 2022 and run for five years with an option to extend for a further two years. It covers: Health Visiting Services: delivering the Healthy Child Programme for children aged 0-5 years old) and five universal mandated health visiting reviews. Specialist breastfeeding and parental mental health support are also integrated within the health visiting service. School Nursing Services: delivering the Healthy Child Programme for children aged 5 to 19 years old and the mandated National Child Measurement Programme. Nursing Services for children in care The annual contract value is £3,577,359 with a maximum total value of £25,042,000 over seven years.

FareShare South West is backing the #FoodOnPlates campaign to stop millions of tonnes of fresh, unsold food from being wasted, when it could instead go to charities and community groups feeding families.

‘Lifeline’ UK government funding launched in 2018 that helped farmers cover the costs of getting unsold food to charities has been axed – and calls to renew it have been rejected.

One in 8 people in the UK struggles to afford food - and the pandemic has resulted in many more families facing food insecurity, with 67% of charities providing emergency food aid saying they would have to continue, even as restrictions ease.

The #FoodOnPlates campaign calls for funding of £5m a year to help farmers and food producers cover the costs of safely storing and transporting unsold food so it can be redistributed. This would enable the UK to double the amount of food delivered to those in need. Without it, 53m meals worth of food will be wasted.

Despite this, it is cheaper for farmers to waste good-to-eat food than get it to charities putting meals onto people’s plates. France, which offers business incentives through reduced taxation for food redistribution, gets 6x more unsold food to charities. WRAP estimates there is over 2 million tonnes of edible surplus food in the supply chain, with the majority found on farms. 36

During the pandemic, the FareShare network (of which FareShare South West is a member) distributed 19,000 tonnes worth of emergency food supplies donated by government and businesses – thanks to a campaign with ambassador Marcus Rashford – alongside over 35,000 tonnes of good to eat surplus, unsold food from farms and food producers. However, demand for food remains incredibly high – particularly for charities supporting children and families, and for those providing emergency food aid.

In the South West region, food for over 6 million meals was delivered from March 2020-to March 2021, six times more than in 2019. That meant 416 frontline charities, schools and community groups were supported by food, saving vital frontline charity partners £5million in average retail value. FareShare South West CEO, Julian Mines says: “The need for food support soared in the early days of the pandemic and our frontline partners saw huge demand for their services, and an increased need to support users with food provision. Pre-pandemic levels of food insecurity were already significant and the last year has simply exacerbated and laid bare the issue. With hat in mind, we’re proud to be part of the #FoodOnPlates campaign as we fundamentally believe good food should never go to waste. Instead, we want to see that food reach those who most need it here in the South West and across the country.”

“It’s a scandal that good food is left to rot in our fields or be thrown into biogas digesters or landfill when so many families are still dependent on food aid in the wake of the crisis, with thousands more unable to afford healthy fruit and veg. “One in eight people struggle to afford food – and 64,000 people die from conditions related to poor diet every year. Getting healthy food from farms into our most deprived communities will help tackle the ever-widening ‘nutritional gap’ between the richest and poorest in society. “France rescues six times more unsold food than we do in the UK, in part thanks to tax breaks that cover the additional costs of getting that food to charities. That’s why we’re calling on the government to reinstate lifeline funding to save good food and get it onto people’s plates.”

FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell, said: “Our network of frontline charities have been a lifeline for families during the pandemic, and, sadly, demand now remains at similar levels.

Local air ambulance crews and volunteers teach lifesaving CPR to Bristol Bears players

Director of Rugby at Bristol Bears, Pat Lam, said: “A huge thank you to Great Western Air Ambulance Charity for taking the time to come and teach our staff and players crucial lifesaving skills at the High Performance Centre. We saw during Euro 2020 the importance of knowing how to perform The session, which took place in the Bristol Bears High Performance Centre, saw Critical effective CPR and first aid in the event of a Care Doctors and Specialist Paramedics from cardiac arrest and everyone will have benefitted hugely from today.” the local air ambulance crew, along with a number of volunteers from the charity’s Great Great Western Air Ambulance Charity run Western Heartstarters programme, train the their own training programme, Great Western players in performing effective CPR and first aid in the event of a cardiac arrest. This was Heartstarters, which sees a number of local healthcare professionals volunteer to teach particularly prominent following the incident lifesaving skills to school pupils across Bristol, earlier this year during the European Bath and North East Somerset, North Championships which highlighted the Somerset, Gloucestershire and South importance of having bystanders trained in Gloucestershire. medical first aid. Over 50 Bristol Bears Premiership Rugby players were taught vital lifesaving skills today in a session hosted by local crews and volunteers from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

In the UK, 30,000 people will experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year, in which their heart stops, yet sadly only 1 in 10 will survive. Having effective CPR in the first two minutes can double the person’s chance of survival and is vitally important to have begun before emergency services are on scene, meaning having non-healthcare professionals trained in CPR can mean the difference between life and death. The Bristol Bears players were shown what to do in the event of a medical emergency, and then taught how to perform effective CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest using manikins provided by the local air ambulance charity. 38

Critical Care Doctor Rich Jeavons from the air ambulance charity, said: “It’s been such a great opportunity to come along today and teach the team these skills. We’re honoured to be a part of it and really pleased to see a local high profile sports team train in such important skills – we hope if they’re ever needed, that they can feel confident in providing this crucial first aid.”

The event happened to take place during Air Ambulance Week, which runs from 6 – 12 September this year. The dedicated campaign week highlights how air ambulance charities, such as Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, rapidly deliver advanced lifesaving pre-hospital care to patients suffering a life-threatening medical emergency or injury, essentially bringing the hospital to the patient when every second counts. The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity crew are called out to over five incidents a day on average, with over a third of these often being in the event of someone suffering a cardiac arrest. If you’re interested in finding out more about your local air ambulance charity or the Great Western Heartstarters programme, visit www.gwaac.com or contact info@gwaac. com.

Hoteliers welcome return of face-to-face networking Hoteliers in Bristol have warmly welcomed news of the relaunch of the West of England Branch of the Institute of Hospitality. A networking event is taking place on Thursday 16 September at Best Western Plus Centurion Hotel, Radstock, near Bath, featuring local producers and suppliers. Guest speaker will be Harry Murray MBE, Chairman of Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa, who has 50 years’ experience of managing fivestar international hotels. Neil Porter, Chairman of the IoH West of England branch, said: “After a long period of the region being dormant, a number of us decided we should try to get the branch operating again.

“The key driver for this was to re-engage with members throughout the region and to provide support to each other and the industry following the impact the pandemic has had on our wonderful hospitality industry.” Among those attending will be Raphael Herzog, Chairman of the Bristol Hoteliers Association, who said: “The BHA is delighted that the West of England branch of the Institute of Hospitality is being re-launched. “This is a welcome boost to our sector, which is on the long road to recovery after being one of the hardest-hit industries during the pandemic. “People are very excited about being able to network in person again and to support each other as we look to build for the future.” Further details about the event can be found on the IoH West of England website, at www.instituteofhospitality.org/west-of-england To book a place at the networking event click here. The Institute of Hospitality is the world’s leading body for hospitality professionals. It was established I 1938 and is managed as an educational charity. 43

Charity ‘Jessie May’ Releases Annual Impact Report Documenting Impressive Figures and Future Plans. The Bristol based charity, Jessie May has released their most recent impact report, shining light on the resilient hard work the charity has undertaken throughout the pandemic. From April 2020 to March 2021, Jessie May nurses have spent an incredible 4516 hours supporting terminally ill children and their families, with over 1170 three-hour palliative care specialist nursing visits. To recover from the pandemic, the charity sets out its aims for the next 12-18 months, in getting back on track. This includes refining the menu of care support to con tinue to improve upon the quality of care provided to children and families, maintaining the voice of parents and carers in the charity, and improving fundraising with a new Marketing and Communications Plan. Jessie May was created over 25 years ago when Chris and Phillipa Purrington’s child, Jessica May, died peacefully in her father's arms in September 1994. In discovering that care for a terminally ill child was not received in homes across Bristol, Chris and Phillipa took it upon themselves to make this possible, officially launching the Jessie May Trust in 1996. 46

“We offer end of life care and bereavement support, as well as vital respite sessions and emotional support to those children’s families.” Jessie May reports, “This allows families to make the most of the precious time they have together and to create treasured family memories.” An example of their extraordinary work is young Finley, born with a very severe muscle weakness. With one brother and seven sisters, Finley desperately needed extra care. “It’s 24/7 pressure on the family. He requires suctioning and ventilation, although he is slowly spending more time off the vent,” says Mum, Annaleise. With the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessie May’s support has meant more to her than ever: “They have helped to support emotionally as well as caring for Finley’s medical needs. Charlotte, my daughter, waits at the door for them to arrive. The whole family loves it when they are here.” You can find out more about Jessie May and read their impact report here
