DOGS TAKE THE LEAD TO RAISE MONEY FOR HOMELESS CHARITY, ST MUNGO’S
Ready, steady, woof! Dogs and their humans are taking the lead once again, to wag, wiggle and ultimately walk a marathon - 26.2 miles, to raise money for St Mungo’s, the leading homeless charity, throughout August. The event which is in its third year, can be done by p’awsome two and four legged fundraisers at their own pace, in their local area and during their own time, in order to complete the distance. Having a furry face taking the lead for fundraising is important for St Mungo’s as one of the only homelessness charities in England with pet friendly hostels, including in the South West in the Bristol and Bath regions. The charity understands that because of the incredibly powerful emotional support they provide; no-one should face giving up their pet in order to gain a home. 6
However, research by the University of Nottingham has revealed that currently, only 7% of private landlords advertise pet-friendly properties and just 36.8% of homelessness organisations provide services for pets, meaning far too many people who are sleeping rough remain on the streets for an increased period of time, due to the lack of suitable accommodation for both themselves and their pet. All money raised will go towards St Mungo’s work supporting people who are experiencing homelessness to begin their journey to recovery and rebuild their lives. Rebecca, a resident of St Mungo’s accommodation in Bath, has a particularly incredible bond with her dog Roo. Roo can predict before Rebecca is going to have a seizure, and therefore keeps her safe, and has given Rebecca has a newfound independence.
They are rarely without one another; “she’s not just my assistance dog, she’s my best friend”, Rebecca says. They both will be taking part in the Take The Lead challenge this August.
Petra Salva, Director of Rough Sleeping, Westminster and Migrant Services at St Mungo’s said: “I am delighted that we are hosting Take the Lead for a third year running. My dog, Nero, and I took part together the last two years and had a brilliant time, so I look forward to taking on the challenge with him again this year, whilst most importantly, raising money to end homelessness. “Our clients’ pets are a huge support and comfort to them, sometimes their only companion, and it is heart breaking that whilst people are already going through such a difficult time, they may also be separated from their pets because they don’t have a solid place to call home. “That is why it is so important that St Mungo’s reduces such barriers for those people in accepting pets into our hostels and helping the person on their journey to recovery.” For more information about Take the Lead, visit https://takethelead.mungos.org/.
Lucy Siegle, TV presenter and dog mum. “I am delighted to be supporting St Mungo’s and their Take the Lead campaign. I have two dogs myself and they mean the world. No one should be rough sleeping in this society, and no one should have to be separated from their dog so it is fantastic that St Mungo's allows dogs in their hostels. I would encourage everyone to team up with their dog and get involved in this campaign. Let's do all we can to help St Mungo's Take the Lead'.
Once registered, fundraisers can expect a Mungo’s t-shirt and dog lead. On raising £50, they will be sent a dog bandana and all those who raise more than £150, will receive a much coveted doggie bag.

NATIONAL GIRLFRIENDS DAY Ladies, it’s time for some real talk. National Girlfriend Day, an annual event that rolls around every August 1st. Unlike National Boyfriend Day, this day isn’t for boyfriends to appreciate their girlfriends (let’s be honest, that should happen every day), it’s about women supporting women! Romantic partners will come and go. Jobs are won and lost. But no matter what happens, your girls will be there in a crunch. It’s a time to honor your “ride or die” crew of homegirls! So, why do we love our girlfriends so much? Because they’re like sisters but without any of the growing-up baggage. Plus, when times are tough, your girls will let you vent and when you’re done; they will offer up the support you need to get through. Spa days, weekend retreats, pajama parties complete with wine and nachos are even better when your girlfriends join in the fun. This year on National Girlfriend Day 2022, spend some delicious time gossiping about lovers past, present and future. Discuss your hopes and dreams in a really safe space, the circle of sisterhood.

Poets Walk
Situated in Clevedon, Somerset, this 9-hectare coastal site includes Church Hill and Wain’s Hill. It comprises limestone grassland, scrub and secondary woodland, supporting a rich diversity of wildlife and offering delightful walks with stunning views over the Bristol Channel. Poets’ Walk was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1993.
The site is managed by North Somerset Council assisted by volunteers from the Friends of Poets’ Walk. The plateau grassland is tractor mown in late summer while the steeper, more wildflower-rich slopes are mechanically trimmed or scythed. The formal paths of Poets’ Walk (celebrating the poets Coleridge and Tennyson among others) were constructed in 1929, and the circular path around Church Hill dates from 1923. Running across the southern face of Church Hill is the original path to St Andrew’s Parish Church. Wain’s Hill is the site of an Iron Age hill fort and is a Scheduled Monument. Park in the Salthouse Fields carpark or by the road at the West End. 22

1 The Lookout (recently rebuilt) – originally built 1835 for the sugar merchant Conrad Finzel and now popularly known as the Sugar Lookout. 2 This iron bollard from the 1930s originally marked the top of the zigzag path (then fenced) and prevented grazing cattle from wandering onto the pathway. 3 The Tennyson posts (‘darkened heart’ sculpture) – erected 1994 with lines from the poem In Memoriam A.H.H. completed 1849 after the death of the poet Tennyson’s friend Hallam. 4 The ramparts of the Iron Age hill fort – scrub has recently been cleared by volunteers who now maintain the grassland by annual scything. 5.World War II shelter – now gated, popularly known as the Pill Box.

WHY WE LIKE TO SAY “YES”
A CASE STUDY FROM ONE OF OUR PORTFOLIO LANDLORDS There are many things that make us different as an Agency – from the way in which we would rather say “yes” than “no” (no benefits no one and adds zero value, so we like to say yes wherever possible, unless its unsafe, impossible or is financially not viable); to the way in which we look a landlord in the eye and tell them that we will look after their property as though it were one of ours – and mean it. Here though, is a case study about something we love – helping portfolio Landlords, with a proper 360 offering, using the experience that we have gained from being property investors ourselves. This Landlord came to speak with us before the purchase of his two current properties, which we discussed at length, and he then, subsequently, went on to make offers on. Both purchases proceeded at the same time and completed within a few days of each other. One property had tenants in situ and our landlord was happy for us to onboard the current tenants, do a compliance audit, make sure that everything was safe and as it should be and proceed to manage. With a few tweaks here and there, this one was ready to go and pretty much “turnkey”.
24
The second property was another matter altogether. The property had tenants, but it was being sold with vacant possession and the tenants were moving out. It was, how can I put it, shabby and underlet in our opinion. The property also needed compliance certs as these were not up to date and we were concerned about what a compliance audit would show up. We worked closely with the Landlord, discussing ways in which we could bring the property up to scratch to attract the right tenants at the right price and we did a careful market analysis which highlighted that the property was indeed underlet. Once completion had taken place, we got trades in to do a light refurb, turning the property from a shabby, uninspiring, let, which attracted the wrong kind of tenants, into a lovely property which stood out in the rental market and attracted lots of interest. We also completed a full compliance audit, rectified several issues that this brought up and booked in new up to date certifications – so that the property was ready for us to organise viewings.
We believe that it should never be a compromise engaging the services of an agent; in fact, quite the opposite, it should give you back your time and provide a truly passive experience! This is the part of the process that we love the most because it’s where we get to add significant value. If we can help in any way at all, then we will, and often do!
Being investors ourselves, we were very aware that it was important that the property started making money as soon as possible – as voids will kill your cash flow and, as such, are completely unacceptable, so appointments for trades were booked in as soon as contracts were exchanged, so that we didn’t lose any time and minimised void periods. Everything was completed, without drama, the house looked lovely and was safe and compliant and we booked in viewing slots. The property was fully let in under 10 days, with a 13% rent increase. The Landlord is happy, the Tenants are happy, and we are very happy that we could say “yes” and do a great job for our landlord. He now has a completely passive solution and is looking for his next purchase! Lettings shouldn’t be a series of tick boxes. Every landlord is different, every tenant is different, every location is different. Being a lettings partner is about taking the time and trouble to understand your landlord’s motivations and working out a way forward, together, to reach the very best outcome. Our job is to keep our landlords and their assets safe and compliant, whilst maximising their rent and looking after their tenants. LETTINGS WITHOUT COMPROMISE

MASSIVE NEW DEVELOPMENT FOR BRISLINGTON WEST
BRISLINGTON GREENWAY IN DANGER
MASSIVE NEW DEVELOPMENT BRISLINGTON WEST
Local residents may remember that the planning applications to construct an active travel corridor along the former Brislington Railway Line, together with pop-up office spaces, passed with unanimous cross-party support at a planning meeting back in the spring. Since then, we have been frustrated by the lack of progress and have been in regular contact with the applicants and the planning department to try and get things moving.
Sovereign Housing has now launched a public consultation on the next big development for Brislington West, Castle Court, opposite Sainsbury’s, which is currently occupied by City Motors. You can find out more about the proposals and have your say using the attached link:
Unfortunately, the applicants have told us they are having to pause the scheme as the Labour-run council now want an additional £10,000 worth of reports before giving the final go-ahead. Meanwhile, construction costs continue to rise, and with only a three-year temporary permission in place, the viability of the scheme is starting to be in doubt. If the active travel scheme fails to materialise, this leaves the way clear for the council to push ahead with their plans to have motorised vehicles on the Greenway instead, something we have been resisting for the last five years. We will keep you updated as soon as we get more information.
NEW EV CHARGING AT TESCO

We are delighted to see that Brislington Tesco has started installing EV charging in its car park, which will provide free electrical charges while you shop. We have been calling for this infrastructure for some time, so we are pleased that it will shortly be in place. We are hopeful other local supermarkets will follow suit and we are also pushing for council-owned car parks to install EV charging as well.
OUR LATEST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER We believe in keeping local residents informed all year round, not just at election time! We are the only team who regularly deliver newsletters throughout the year and our latest one is hitting the doorsteps right now. We want to thank the local residents who volunteer to deliver the newsletter to every household across the ward. If you would like to volunteer for an hour or so every few months to help deliver the local news, please get in touch.
COMMUNITY LITTER PICK A reminder that our next litter pick will be this Saturday, 30 July. We are meeting at the bottom of Sand Hill by the junction of Bloomfield and Whitby Roads at 10am. A NEW EXHIBITION EXPLORING BRISTOL’S ROLE IN THE CLIMATE Think Global: Act Bristol looks at the big environmental questions affecting people in the city and presents perspectives from a wide range of local voices. With the help of historical objects from Bristol’s collection, the exhibition considers how the industry and growth of the city has led to the changes being experienced today while art commissions help visualise invisible effects and collaborative solutions. Through seven themes - power, technology, consumption, nature, health, justice, and future - the exhibition examines how we might harness the power of collective thought and action. A Propagator Space provides an opportunity to meet like-minded people, share tips and hear about the kaleidoscope of great work happening in Bristol to tackle the issues.
Kye Dudd, Cabinet Member for Climate, Ecology, Waste and Energy, said: “The launch of Think Global: Act Bristol this week is coinciding with the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the UK. It has never been more important to talk about the climate and ecological emergencies that we’re facing. Through innovative art installations and fascinating historical objects, Think Global: Act Bristol takes on the big questions - how did we get here? What’s Bristol’s role in it? 28
What does a just, green future look like? The only thing missing is the voices from our wider citizens. Everyone is invited to join the discussion and contribute a vision of a future Bristol so we can fulfil our climate and nature recovery ambitions. Whether you’re an activist, a scientist, or just feeling anxious and overwhelmed by it all, we hope everyone will leave the exhibition feeling more confident in their power to make change.” Objects in the exhibition include an early electric bike, placards collected from recent Black Lives Matter and climate protests, and an interactive digital butterfly visualisation. Perhaps more surprisingly, there is a sedan chair, a model for the Beagle 2 Mars space lander donated by Judith Pillinger, and a deposit-encrusted statue of Thomas Chatterton. A ‘shoal’ of nearly 10,000 fish made by schoolchildren from redundant Bristol Pound notes leads up the stairs to the gallery, a project by artist and activist Mary Collett. Think Global: Act Bristol will be accompanied by a public art project that has created a real prototype of a Martian house. Opening on 17 August on M Shed Square, Building a Martian House has brought together space scientists, architects, engineers, designers, school children and the public to explore how we live today and stimulate visions for new ways of living on Earth and on Mars.
The project is led and conceived by artists Ella Good and Nicki Kent, in collaboration with Hugh Broughton Architects and Pearce+.
Artists Ella Good and Nicki Kent, said: “Mars is a place where you would have to live carefully and resourcefully. By imagining how a small community would live there, it offers a sharp lens on our lives here on Earth and our fraught relationship with consumerism. Our Martian house will start as an empty shell that comes to life with changing interiors as we explore together what a new, sustainable culture might look like. It’s a blank canvas to try things out and imagine new futures in relation to our lives today.”
Think Global: Act Bristol has been made possible thanks to the contribution of expert partners and community members including academics from UWE Bristol and University of Bristol, the Cabot Institute, Business West, Green Tech South West, Black & Green Ambassadors, Bristol City Council’s Sustainable City team, Ambition Lawrence Weston, Sustainable Fashion Week and many more. Think Global: Act Bristol is open now until 30 October 2022. Entry is ‘pay what you can’. Tickets are available from www.bristolmuseums.org.uk and M Shed box office.
Public tours of the interior of the Martian house will begin from 31 August to accompany a programme of workshops and panel discussions.

This additional funding will allow the councils to focus on anti-social behaviour concerns that contribute to the fear of VAWG by targeting resources at four locations – Taunton, Bridgwater, Weston-super-Mare and Yeovil. The areas identified experience VAWG related crime, anti-social behaviour and low feelings of safety for people within those communities.
Successful joint funding bid to tackle violence against women North Somerset Council and Somerset County Council have jointly secured an additional £317,694 from the Home Office Safer Streets Fund to continue to make public spaces and streets safer for women and girls. This follows the success of the neighbouring councils’ 2021 campaign ‘It can stop if we change together’. The campaign raised awareness, tackled sexual harassment and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) to make public places and streets safer. The national Safer Streets campaign is aimed at changing perpetrator behaviour and to have a conversation in society that challenges misogynistic attitudes and discourages inappropriate behaviour towards women and girls. This additional funding will enable the campaign to continue for another year across North Somerset and Somerset. The campaign already provides a program of prevention and response activity to help reduce the impact of VAWG, including delivering education and training programs, public engagement events, women’s outreach services and deployment of 18 additional CCTV cameras across the combined local authority area. 30
It will provide funding for a new Safer Streets van that will be operated by North Somerset Council's Community Safety Team. The Safer Streets van will add to the wellestablished mobile police station model and will be used to run drop-ins, roadshows and awareness raising events. It will also double-up as a mobile office enabling officers to work within hotspot areas for VAWG and anti-social behaviour to maximise visibility. Speaking about the Safer Streets campaign, Somerset County Council’s lead member with responsibility for public health Cllr Adam Dance, said: “This significant extra funding will enable us to continue to tackle sexual harassment and violence against women and girls across our county. The Safer Streets campaign is so important – inappropriate words or actions against women and girls are simply not acceptable. We want perpetrators to think about how their behaviour makes people feel, and we are committed through this campaign to help reduce Violence Against Women and Girls and improve safety for women and girls in public places across Somerset.” Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, said: “The Safer Streets project across North Somerset and Somerset is hugely important. It presents an opportunity to work together and achieve positive outcomes in tackling Violence Against Women and Girls crimes across the area. I’m delighted that additional funding has been secured to enable this invaluable work to continue for another year. With Somerset, we are fully committed to changing behaviour and increasing the feelings of safety for women and girls.” If you want to know more about sexual harassment and violence against women and girls and how to change behaviour, visit www.saferstreetsawareness.co.uk

Excitement builds as new Frenchay Primary School nears completion Even as staff and students look forward to the summer holidays, a group from Frenchay Church of England Primary School have visited the site of their brand new facilities to take a last peek before building work is completed over the break. They will move in at the start of the new school year in September. The school is a new build and enlargement on part of the site of the former Frenchay Hospital. It will have state of the art facilities and, as temperature records have tumbled recently, the visitors were particularly keen to see and learn about the environmental performance of their new building, which are designed to Passivhaus standards of environmental performance, meaning they will have a very low carbon impact on the environment.
Building work began in June 2021 and the construction will deliver new energy efficient, low impact facilities. Key features of the design include high levels of insulation, triple glazing, low energy LED lighting, heating provided by air-source heat pumps and recycling of heat through a Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which also ensures good air quality throughout the school. When complete the school will use electricity only, require no fossil fuel consumption on site and generate its own zero carbon energy through Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, with any surplus energy feeding into the national grid. This brand new facility, will provide accommodation for a larger number of pupils than the current school with capacity for 420 pupils to respond to increased demand in the area. Frenchay CofE Primary School Headteacher, Katherine Marks, said:
“My staff and I are so excited about starting the new school year in this brand new building. The pupils who visited the site were fascinated to see how the school is coming together, layer by layer, as well as to meet some of the builders and hearing from them how they are making our new school.”
Designed and project managed by the council, the new £11million Frenchay CofE Primary School is the first Passivhaus school South Gloucestershire Council Cabinet in South Gloucestershire. Members with responsibility for Schools and for Corporate Resources, Cllrs Erica Williams and Ben Burton, joined Leader, Toby Savage, and the staff and pupils on the recent tour and said:
“This is exciting for us, because we are seeing the benefits of our decision making, to provide the best possible start in life for children in South Gloucestershire, as well as to make a real difference on response to the Climate Emergency, are coming together.
32
“We reassessed the original design for the new school in 2020 after the Council declared a Climate Emergency. We have invested £800,000 from our Climate Emergency Fund into the project and have been able to improve that design and invest in new technologies and building techniques to deliver what promises to be an excellent new school for these pupils, but something that will benefit them and generations to come.” Rob Shipp, Construction Manager at BAM, the developer which is delivering the project, said: “This is a fantastic, local scheme for BAM and one that we are proud to be delivering for South Gloucestershire Council. The new Passivhaus school is extremely efficient and is constructed to high quality standards to meet the rigorous Passivhaus criteria. This building will be a huge asset to the area.”

YOUR GARDEN IN AUGUST After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry too much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.
TAKE HERB CUTTING
August is the ideal month to take cuttings woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.
38
PRUNING AND TIDYING
Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.
Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.
LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH..
MAKE PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR
Why should you plant them?
A nice relaxing job for those hot days! Pull up a chair in a sunny spot and start planning for next year. Make sketches of your flower borders and vegetable plot and list what you want to plant.
Hydrangea Hydrangeas are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. They are easy to care for, fully hardy and have an old fashioned, cottage style charm.
HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Hydrangeas like moist, free draining soil and a partially shaded sheltered spot.
Take photos of your garden now while it is looking its best – if you want to rearrange in the winter its much easier to do if you have a reference point. Also think about what bulbs you want to plant for that early display of spring colour – bulbs are usually available to buy from the end of August ready for autumn planting. 39

POOR VALUATION CAN “BLIGHT” A PROPERTY Homeowners should carefully consider the price they ask for their property when selling to avoid suffering from “valuation blight” that means their move suffers long delays, according to a property specialist in North Somerset.
“It is better to look at who has a good track record and experience in the location; who has the personality and enthusiasm that appeals and which agency will provide quality photography and modern marketing techniques to really sell a property.
Getting the valuation of a property right is vital and nobody wants to feel that they sold their biggest asset too cheaply. But some houses in the region are now blighted by their sales history.
“Once vendors put their house on the market they usually want to move quickly and will often miss out on their own dream move if their sale is delayed. Sadly there are a few properties now suffering from “valuation blight” having been marketed at far too high a level in the last year.”
Andrew Simmonds, director of Parker’s Estate Agents in North Somerset, said: “In a market where prices are rising pretty constantly it can be tempting for homeowners to simply go with the highest valuation and believe they can simply drop during negotiation. “But in reality, houses that are over-valued just do not sell. More often than not the homeowner tends to drop the price or change estate agents and put the property on for a lower price. “But in areas like North Somerset there are a finite number of buyers looking at any particular property type and once they have dismissed a property from their consideration they rarely go back. Properties that have been on the market for a long time are recognised and buyers wonder why it is sticking around.” Mr Simmonds, a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, says getting the valuation right at the beginning is vital for a smooth sale. “Unfortunately, some estate agents will tell homeowners that their property is worth more in order to win the instruction. It is a good idea to ask a few different agents to value the property but the object of that exercise should not be to just pick the one who quoted the highest figure.

SURGE IN UK HOLIDAY BOOKINGS AS TRAVEL CHAOS CONTINUES
A motorhome hire firm has seen a TENFOLD increase in last-minute bookings this summer – as airport and port chaos continues. Matt Sims who runs a Motorhome Holiday Company in Somerset, believes the spike in demand is due to flight and ferry delays. He said: “It’s the first time we’ve seen such an influx in last-minute bookings and many customers say they have been put off by the uncertainty at airports and gridlock at Dover. They want to enjoy a stress-free holiday, with control over how and when they travel, and this is an appealing choice.”
FREEDOM TO TRAVEL – MORE CHEAPLY The Motorhome Holiday Company was fully booked last summer as Brits looked to take a staycation because of Covid-19 restrictions around foreign travel. But while people previously booked at least a month in advance – they are leaving it to just days in advance in some cases. One customer, Sophie Slavin, decided to take a last-minute motorhome holiday with her family and dog because flights during school holidays were expensive and she was worried the trip might not go ahead. Travel with pets Sophie, who heads SAS Creative marketing services in Bristol, said their group of eight and Millie, the Jack Russell, had greater control over their travel and at a fraction of the price. 48
She said: “We planned to go abroad but the flights were extortionate – particularly during the school holidays - and we’d seen flights cancelled or delayed, with people stranded in airports. “It didn’t look like an appealing or affordable option. We wanted to get away as a family and decided to try the motorhome option, which worked out at around a fifth of the cost. “We loved having the freedom to go where we wanted to go. We picked a spot on the UK map at random and off we went to Pembrokeshire for a family adventure.” Sophie, a keen horse rider who has taken her daughter’s pony, Angel, to care homes for several years, said the motorhome experience ensured they spent quality time together and could bring their dog, Millie.
EARLY DEALS But Matt of The Motorhome Holiday Company is urging people to book in advance where possible to guarantee availability for preferred dates. The company is offering free fuel refill for bookings of five days or more made now for July and August. Matt said: “We’ve been able to accommodate the late bookings so far - but early booking ensures you avoid possible disappointment.”

Government must save hospitality businesses from soaring utility bills The stark warning comes from Regency Purchasing Group, one of the UK’s leading procurement businesses, which says the hospitality sector is now in the midst of a ‘perfect storm’. Unless the Government intervenes to help hospitality businesses with soaring utility bills thousands could be forced to close over the next few years.
“Unless the Government intervenes, I expect hundreds of hospitality businesses to close by the end of this year, and it could be thousands within a few years.”
Managing Director Alex Demetriou said: “Until recently, a typical pub was spending around £2,000 per month on utilities, but businesses renewing their contracts are seeing their monthly costs increase to around £7,000.
He said Brexit, which has been somewhat overshadowed by the pandemic, has had a huge impact on the hospitality industry’s ability to recruit the required numbers of staff.
“That is an extra £60,000 a year, on utility bills alone. Many village and community pubs do not make £60,000 profit in a year, so the utility bill crisis alone is the difference between making money and losing it. “In addition, pubs that serve food are seeing further challenges with not being able to recruit the staff they need, forcing them to close their kitchens, either for several days a week or, in some cases, closing them entirely. “A number of our members have told us they are now making plans to close their businesses when their utility contracts are up for renewal later in the year. “It’s a bleak picture today with the number of businesses that have closed or are struggling, but the situation is set to worsen further with hundreds of businesses now forward-planning their closures in line with forthcoming utility renewals. 50
Food and drink costs have increased, there have been supply chain issues and minimum wage has increased, all of which have contributed to the ‘perfect storm’, with many smaller hospitality businesses already operating within very tight margins. Regency Purchasing Group has been supporting its growing customer portfolio by securing the most competitive pricing for food and drink, but in recent months the procurement experts have found themselves spending more time taking a more holistic view of businesses, including utility costs. But Mr Demetriou warned that, ultimately, the Government needs to step in to give hospitality businesses any chance of weathering the storm. He said: “The price cap in the UK is used by OFGEM to protect the consumer, not businesses.
