Soaring to new heights: Community launches are back at this year’s Bristol International Balloon Fiesta
After the huge success of last year’s Fiesta community launches with Costa Coffee, which saw hundreds of hot air balloons take off from secret locations across Bristol, the much-loved launches will once again be returning to this year's Balloon Fiesta to officially kick off 2022’s festivities.
The landmark partnership between the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and the Nation’s Favourite Coffee Shop*, Costa Coffee, will once more bring this special ballooning event back to the city ahead of the Fiesta, which will return to its original home at Ashton Court Estate for the first time since before the pandemic.
For the second year running, Costa Coffee will be fuelling pilots for the early morning ascents by providing coffee. They will also be bringing their Costa Experience Pods back to the city this summer where Fiesta fans will be able to try from its biggest and chilliest new summer drinks menu. Attendees will be able to try the new Frappé, Iced Velvet Latte and FuzeTea Iced Tea ranges. Last year, over 700 nominations were submitted by locals to help choose the balloon launch locations, which included a mass ascent from Elm Park in Filton, Canford Park and Merchants’ Academy in Withywood.
Christoph Allcock, Chair of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta said: “After seeing how much-loved the special edition of the Fiesta was last year, we are really looking forward to bringing the community launches back for 2022. We are so thankful to Costa Coffee for partnering with us to help this happen and we can’t wait to see where Fiesta fans want to see the balloons fly from next. It’s important to us that everyone gets to experience the Balloon Fiesta, especially To find out the final list of locations, residents communities that rarely get balloons should stay tuned in to the Fiesta Fortnight’s overhead.” social media channels, which will include regular updates on all locations and timings to help plan when to head outside to view the balloons flying over the city. 4 Following the hugely popular Fiesta Fortnight in 2021, Bristol locals will once again be able to nominate the locations where they would like to see balloons lift off, which could be anywhere from local parks to public spaces, car parks or streets. Nominations are now live on the Fiesta website and locations will be revealed closer to the morning of the ascents.
Rebecca Brock, Commercial and Customer Director at Costa Coffee UK & Ireland said: “We are proud to continue our partnership with Bristol International Balloon Fiesta on such a fantastic event and offer attendees and coffee lovers the chance to enjoy some amazing drinks from our new summer menu. Whether your go to is trying our new Frappé and FuzeTea Iced Tea ranges or a fruiter option with our Fruit Coolers, or just a classic Latte or Flat White, we have something for all the family to enjoy while taking in the spectacular views of this event.” For more information on the Fiesta Fortnight head to www.bristolballoonfiesta.co.uk/

SEE MONSTER is coming to Weston-sper-Mare’s iconic seafront.
Voyaging from the far reaches of the North Sea, SEE MONSTER will endure blustery winds and roaring waves as it encircles the UK coast in search of a new home. Audiences from far and wide will flock to the beach to welcome SEE MONSTER, the wild beast that has never been seen before…
With the opportunity to travel up and inside, guests will pass behind the thrashing cascade of a 12-metre waterfall, and under the shimmering scales into the cavernous underbelly of the beast… Within the wild garden you will find hidden routes to explore the rehabilitated Monster, where embedded throughout will be new approaches to a more sustainable and greener future. The Weston Air Festival returns this weekend, after being cancelled for the last two years because of the pandemic. One of the show's highlights is the Gloucestershire based Wing walkers, theys perform acrobatic moves, high in the sky over the sea front to the crowd of thousands below. Kirsten Pobjoy, who is 24 and from Stroud has been lead Wing walker for 5 years. The former circus performer does the breath taking acrobatics and handstands hundreds of feet in the air, travelling at 165 miles an hour. Kirsten said: "The best bit about doing the show for me is that it is actually really close to home. So all my friends and family can come and see me. "And it's really amazing to get a different perspective of a place where I've grown up, I used to go there as a kid and now I see it from the air." Kirsten is part of the only professional women’s formation team in the world based at Rendcomb Airfield near Cirencester.
10
Her performing partner is Emma Broadbent, who is 24 and also from Stroud. The pair go back years, meeting at school at the age of 11. Emma said: “Flying is the best. You get the most amazing views, the best part is being able to do it with your best friend next to you, in the sky - that’s pretty cool.” This weekend the wing walkers are coming the Weston-super-Mare for Weston Air Festival. Thousands of people will be turning their eyes to the skies with 200,000 visitors expected to flock to the seaside town to watch some of the world’s most iconic aircraft fly over Weston -Super-Mare On Saturday and Sunday they will depart near Cirencester, then take a 30 minute flight towards Weston before going into a holding pattern above Clevedon and Portishead.
The Wing walker then climbs out from her seat, onto the top of the plane and begins her performance before heading back to Cirencester after the show is done. Kirsten added: "We fly all over the piers and the sea at Weston, it's a really interesting perspective flying over water - it's great seeing all the crowd fill up the beach. "If you are coming this weekend you can expect lots of flying fun - hopefully we are going to get good weather, and remember to give us a wave."

THE CINEMA REVIEW MOVIE REVIEW ELVIS
A thoroughly cinematic drama, Elvis’s (Butler) story is seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). As told by Parker, the film delves into the complex dynamic between the two spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).
THE BAD GUYS (SATURDAY) Nobody has ever failed so hard at trying to be good as The Bad Guys. In the new action comedy from DreamWorks Animation, based on the New York Times best-selling book series, a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws are about to attempt their most challenging con yet—becoming model citizens.

Celebrating Jessie May Nurses This Children’s Hospice Week Jessie May are a charity based in Bristol who offer in-home palliative care for children with life shortening conditions. Between Monday 20th June and Sunday 26th June, they are celebrating all things children’s palliative care as part of Children’s Hospice Week. This year they are celebrating the care and support they provide #ForTheChildren by highlighting two beautiful stories from two of their specialist Jessie May nurses. Jessie May nurses help to provide essential support for families from the point of their child’s diagnosis, for respite, for end-of-life care for their child, through to bereavement. Jessie May nurse Gemma Warren, recently supported a family whose child was at the end of their life.
The child had a big family, and if they were in hospital, they would not all have been able to visit. By being at home the child was able to see all their family and feel the love that they had for him. If my role means that the child can die in the most comfortable way possible, in surroundings that they’re familiar with and people who they know and trust and love – then that’s why I do it. For the children.” When Arthur was in intensive care he was stressed and unhappy. He had lost all trust in the doctors and nurses because of all the procedures he’d had to have. Arthur's mum Melanie is full of praise for their Jessie May nurse Andy Sweetnam.
“Arthur gets so excited when Andy visits, his face lights up! He beams a huge cheesy grin and starts to do a little “wiggle-dance” - doesn’t every child deserve to have the quality of life where they wiggle–dance? Andy came and he lit up. The relationship that they They could take their child into the garden to have means that he trusts Andy – and Andy feel the sun on their face and hear the birds brings the fun! Having a Jessie May nurse singing, or they could have a cuddle in bed, in makes such a huge difference for Arthur their own pyjamas reading stories (in hospital when he must have hospital stays.” the beds aren’t big enough for a parent to cuddle their child in bed). To find out more about why Jessie May nurses do what they do #ForTheChildren or to make a donation to support this vital work, you can visit https://jessiemay.org.uk/for-thechildren/ 14 “ I knew the family so well; I was able to advocate for their wishes for their child which essentially was to be at home as a family spending as much time together as possible.

Upfest calls out for locals to collaborate with brand new community mural
Upfest, Europe’s largest street art festival and Brighter Places, the largest housing association based in Bristol with 3,300 homes, have teamed up. Together, they are looking to bring a new and unique mural to St. Pauls and St. Agnes for Brighter Places’ new development of 31 affordable apartments on Lower Ashley Road later this year - and are asking locals in the area to collaborate on the piece. The artwork, commissioned by Brighter Places and construction partner, Prelon Housing, will be painted on the side of the newly built housing development and will be visible to anyone entering St Pauls and St Agnes from Baptist Mills and the M32 interchange. The new mural will create a vibrant welcome to the area and integrate the new homes into an already lively community. Upfest and Brighter Places are asking for anyone local to the neighbourhood with ideas, thoughts and stories around St Pauls and St Agnes to fill out a questionnaire which will help inspire the artwork. Any stand out submissions could be invited to attend a design workshop to further develop the design. A Bristol artist will be selected to bring the concept to life and work with the local community to gain inspiration and lead the creation of the mural. 16
If you live in the area and want to put your stamp on this unique piece of artwork, you can fill out the questionnaire here to share your creative ideas. The consultation is open until Sunday 26th June 2022. Steve Hayles, co-founder of Upfest said: “Being able to give local people and residents the opportunity to put their own ideas and creativity into this brand new piece of street art is something that we’re really looking forward to. Engaging with communities and collaborating with them on this mural is what’s really going to make this a stand out piece of art for the entire neighbourhood to enjoy.” Anna Klimczak, CEO of Brighter Places said: “We are excited to be working with Upfest on this project. Our new affordable homes are being built on the site of a former petrol station that has been vacant for some years. The addition of a mural is a fantastic opportunity to make the homes feel like part of their surroundings. Engaging with the local community is a key element to the design process as it’s important to us that a piece of artwork is created by the neighbourhood and for the neighbourhood.” This large scale mural will be a chance for the St Pauls and St Agnes locals to co-create a piece of street art that the entire community will love and demonstrate what makes their neighbourhood unique.

Covid hit events firm set to bounce back with bumper year An events company is looking forward to a bumper year after suffering heavy financial losses during the pandemic. ACF Teambuilding and Events was on track for a record million-pound turnover in 2019 before the outbreak of Covid. But the firm lost hundreds of thousands of pounds due to lockdown and cancelled events. Mark Fanning, who has headed the business for 10 years, said: “It’s been a tough couple of years. I’ve seen competitors go under and had to continually adapt to survive.
The company also took the decision to pivot during the pandemic – holding up to 30 professionally-run virtual events each week during the lockdown periods – from game shows to live music quizzes. Wellbeing focus. Now the team is focusing on wellbeing in nature and team engagement - with activities ranging from axe throwing to ‘forest bathing,’ an immersive therapy developed in Japan. Sort It centre slip road gets green light South Gloucestershire Council has secured planning permission to drive forward with its plans to build a dedicated slip road to the Sort It recycling centre at Carsons Road, Mangotsfield. The slip road is designed to prevent queuing during busy periods, minimising the impact on the local highway network and making access to the site easier and safer for residents. Funding for the construction of the slip road comes via the council’s 2022/23 budget, with work due to start this autumn. Public access to the recycling centre will be maintained wherever possible to minimise disruption. The plans for the site include measures for supporting and protecting wildlife, including the installation of bird boxes, insect hotels, reptile and amphibian shelters and the planting of a new hedgerow. Improvements to drainage on Carsons Road will also be delivered, with further details about the construction and a timeline of work set to be published later this summer. Proposals for the slip road are included in the council’s ‘Resource and Waste Strategy: 2020 and Beyond’, which sets out its environmental aspirations for a sustainable future by valuing all resource and preventing waste whenever possible 20
Cabinet Member for communities, Councillor Rachael Hunt said: “I am delighted that our plans to improve access and reduce queuing times for residents using Mangotsfield Sort It centre have been approved. This means we can now progress with the construction phase to deliver this much-needed slip road as soon as possible. Enhancing the site for nature is an important part of our plans to help residents recycle more and dispose of waste responsibly, as well as ensuring homes for wildlife and maintaining connectivity to surrounding green spaces. “The Sort It recycling centre on Carsons Road is our busiest site and this has sometimes resulted in queuing traffic, particularly on bank holiday weekends. These plans will improve safety and access to the recycling centre and will save time for our residents. “We have the fifth highest recycling rate out of all unitary councils in England which is well in excess of the national average. However, our aims are to encourage more people to do the right thing for the environment by reducing, reusing, and recycling their waste even further.”

THE HUMBLE CHECK-IN
We’ve looked at lots of different aspects of the tenancy cycle, over the last few weeks and, today, it’s the turn of the “humble check in.”
I call it the “humble check in” because a lot of landlords and agents disregard this stage of the process and don’t treat it with as much importance and care as other steps, which come before and after it. This could be because they feel that it’s “job done” by this stage, or because most of the documents etc. have been signed or that there isn’t much for them to do. Whatever the reason, it often gets forgotten, but, as you’ve probably gathered, we’re a little bit different here at KPA. For a tenant, check in day is super important. It’s moving day, the day when they will receive the keys to their new home. It’ll likely be the first time that they will get the opportunity to show it to their friends and family and to put all their most treasured possessions in their places and even perhap s their furniture. So, check in day, is a very exciting time for tenants.
22
So, moving in day for tenants – check in day for you, it’s a bit of a balancing act. There are things you need to do and procedures you need to follow, you want to show your tenants that you appreciate the fact that it’s special for them, you want to “set out your stool” of how things will work between you and, you then want to “get out of their hair” and not over-stay your welcome, so that they can move into their new home in peace! Here’s how we deal with the check in: We would already have done all the precheck in work like the inventory (important document, your inventory is your authority with the DPS and MyDeposits – if in doubt see our website at www.kpa.co.uk for a previous blog on this topic) and had all the requisite tenancy documentation signed and the full referencing procedure carried out.
On the check in day, a member of our team will meet the tenant at the property to cover all of the following: •
Do the right to rent face to face checks. Even though your digital checks may already have been done and your tenant has passed referencing, you will need to ensure that they are who they say they are before you give them their keys.
•
Carry out the Fire alarm tests and furniture audit, in their presence, and record this fact
•
Put a fresh clean mattress protector on the bed and, again, record this fact
•
Discuss important facts about the property like where the fuse board is, the stopcock etc.
•
Take meter reads
•
If it’s an HMO then show them the HMO board and discuss its contents and be ready to answer any questions relating thereto
•
Show them where the house booklet is (with all the important information, some of which you may have just told them, but you know they’ll be too excited to remember).
•
If it’s an HMO be ready to answer any of their questions about their housemates
•
Make sure that they know how to get hold of you if they need to, under normal circumstances and in the case of an emergency
•
If you have any insurance policies that necessitate them dealing with a third party (with a boiler for example) then make sure that they know about this and pop all details into the house booklet
•
If the property comes with the benefit of a cleaner or a gardener or both, then make sure that they know who this is and when they will come and what they will do – again, another item for the house booklet
Moving in day is a big deal for your tenant(s), show them that you understand and appreciate this and use it as another opportunity to set out your stool as to how the landlord and tenant relationship will proceed moving forwards – professional, fair, one of equal value where both parties can expect to be treated with respect, “friendly but not your friend.” You’ll be pleased, in the long run, that you took the time and trouble with this often overlooked part of the process – and so will your tenant! 23

Jos and Andrew report on: Callington Nature Reserve CIL funding update: Thank you to Penny at Greater Brislington Together for organising this year’s public meetings, one online and one in person, to discuss the bids for Community Infrastructure Levy funding, the money developers pay to the council to offset the environmental impact of their developments. Thank you also to members of the public, who attended the meetings, asked questions and voted on the different proposals. By far and away the most popular bid was for road safety improvements along Wick Road and Newbridge Road. According to data collected by the local community speedwatch team, this is the worst road in Bristol for speeding. Last year, we joined the speedwatch team on one of their regular sessions and we saw first hand the regularity of speeding in this location. We have also had meetings with local residents and the police about this issue so we are happy to support this bid’s progress to the next stage of the CIL process. Other popular bids included a school street for Eton Road to encourage safe, active travel journeys for children at Holymead School on Wick Road, ecological and recreational enhancements at Arnos Court Park, a new multipurpose games area for Eastwood Park and new changing facilities at Brislington Cricket Club. Unfortunately, funding is limited and it is unlikely all these projects will get the go ahead. However, there are alternative potential sources of funding, which we shall be pursuing. 26
City Motors redevelopment: Local residents will be aware that Sovereign Housing Association recently acquired a large site in Brislington West, currently occupied by City Motors. We have had a me eting with Sovereign about their proposals for the site and will hopefully be in a position to share more information as soon as possible. You can read more about the deal here: https://www.bristolworld.com/.../ housing-association... John Peer latest: We have received an update on the continuing saga of the long-derelict John Peer site on the A4 opposite Arnos Court Park. Residents may remember the plans were rejected by Bristol city councillors at a planning committee meeting two years ago. The developers submitted an appeal and a date has finally been set. The appeal hearing is to be heard on 31 August with a decision expected by the end of September. Callington Nature Reserve update: We have reported the damaged railing around the pond at Callington Road nature reserve to the council. It was damaged by vandals chucking the owl sculpture into the pond last year! The owl was safely returned to it’s perch but the railings were never repaired.
The council have promised to get it done shortly. Also, a reminder to dog walkers to keep your dogs on a lead in the upper section of the reserve to protect the abundance of wildlife in that area. Dogs are permitted off the lead in the lower section. Hartcliffe Way recycling centre opens: The Hartcliffe Way Reuse and Recycling Centre opens at 9am on Tuesday 21 June. You will need to book to use the new facility! www.bristol.gov.uk/bookrecycling or call 0117 922 2100 As well as recycling bays, the centre has a new Reuse Shop that’s already filling up with furniture and electricals. There’s also a pedestrian route and cycle path around the site so you can visit by car, by bike or on foot. Holiday Hub: Families can now find free and paid for school holiday activities via https://www. yourholidayhubbristol.co.uk The popular YHH programme is returning this summer offering children and young people hundreds of free, fun activities across Bristol over the six-week summer holiday. A new website now makes it easier for families to search for school holiday activities including free YHH places for children on free school meals (FSM) as well as paid for activities and clubs. All of the holiday activities available across Bristol can be found on the website and conveniently searched by location, age or activity. Funded by the UK Government Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme, thousands of Bristol children and young people have already accessed the programme over the Easter holiday. We aim to reach many more children and young people over the summer with thousands of YHH places available. YHH activities include cookery classes, sports, drama and learning about wildlife and the environment, and each four-hour holiday activity also includes a nutritious meal and food education. Eligible children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or an education, health and care plan are welcome at YHH. Families can contact the organisation or session they would like to attend to discuss their child’s individual needs.
Trees for Streets: Bristol City Council has partnered with Trees for Streets to make it easier for residents, organisations and businesses to fund tree planting in streets and parks across the city. Both the Bristol Street Tree Sponsorship Scheme and Celebration Tree Scheme offer you an opportunity to make your city a greener environment. You can choose to sponsor a Street Tree in a pre-selected location, suggest a location outside your house, or sponsor a Celebration Tree in one of Bristol’s beautiful parks or green spaces. This is just one of a number of strategies the council is using to plant more trees in local streets, parks and green spaces, to help reduce air pollution, provide cooling benefits, absorb carbon, bring us closer to nature, improve our mental and physical wellbeing, and generally make Bristol an even better place to live. That’s why mums go to Iceland The supermarket chain has announced that customers aged over 60 will receive a 10% discount on their groceries every Tuesday with no minimum spend. In order to redeem the discount, senior shoppers will need to show proof of age, such as a driving licence or senior bus or rail card. The discount will be available in-store at Iceland and The Food Warehouse branches. Iceland said it was the first UK supermarket to introduce such a discount after being motivated by research from Age UK, which found that three-quarters of older people were worried about the rising cost of living. The company said it is also exploring a national rollout of £30 vouchers to those receiving state pension, following a regional 30
Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said: in a online statement “We have a long history of supporting our over 60s customers, such as when we launched ‘Elderly Hour’ at the height of the pandemic. “The cost of living crisis has made support for these customers even more important, which is why I’m proud that we’re finding new ways to support them, including the launch of this discount. “We hope it will help all those in this age category to cut costs where they can.” The move comes after data from Kantar showed that grocery price inflation hit 5.9% back in April – an 11-year high.

MOSQUITOES WILL LOVE YOU IF YOU DRINK BEER
Beer is an alcoholic beverage that is popular all over the world. You can get beer everywhere from Japan to Africa, Italy, and Mexico. But, even if you love beer, you might want to rethink this habit. In this article, we’ll discuss why mosquitoes love people who drink beer.
The main way that these particular mosquitoes find their targets is through scent. Since the aroma coming from beer drinkers is often particularly strong, these mosquitoes will prefer those who have consumed or are consuming beer over those who are drinking water, tea, juice, or another beverage.
Yes, you read that right. Your delicious beer might be the reason why you suffer from more mosquito bites than non-beer drinkers. But why is that? Why do mosquitoes love beer so much? Does this mean that you should stop drinking beer? Or should you just stop drinking it when you’re outdoors?
Additional Mosquito Attractants On top of that, your genetics, blood type, build, and sweat rate will also contribute to how much you attract mosquitoes. For example, people with Type O blood are more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes. The reason for this is simple. Mosquitoes like the chemical content in Type O blood more than other blood types. Mosquitoes also bite people with higher body masses more because they emit more heat, making them easier for the mosquitoes to find.
Beer Drinkers Attract Mosquitoes In June 2002, a study was published in the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association. In this study, researchers found that by drinking just 12 ounces (355 ml) of beer, you’ll be more attractive to mosquitoes. That’s most likely because drinking beer increases the ethanol content in your sweat. Since ethanol is a pretty big mosquito lure, this means that mosquitoes will flock your way. Another reason why beer increases mosquito activity is because drinking alcohol increases your body temperature. One of the many ways a mosquito finds its target is by sensing heat. So, the higher your body temperature is, the more likely it is that the mosquitoes will find you. Beer drinkers are especially attractive to several species of mosquito. These include the main malaria- and dengue-carrying mosquitoes like Anopheles gambiae and Aedes genus. 32
So, if you’re already more prone to mosquito bites and like to drink beer, you have the winning combination! You’ll be the one who attracts all the mosquitoes, leaving the other people around you happily free from mosquito bites. Even though it sounds like fun and games, the dark truth is, since mosquitoes often carry different diseases, by being more attra zctive to mosquitoes, you’ll also be more likely to get one of these diseases. So, the next time you’re drinking beer somewhere with a lot of mosquitoes, you might want to either change your beverage of choice or put on some mosquito repellent. This will help you limit the number of mosquito bites you get and the chances of you contracting any mosquito-borne diseases.

Energy rebate payments for non-direct debit council tax payers Bath and North East Somerset residents who do not pay their council tax by direct debit are being encouraged to apply for the Government’s £150 energy rebate payment. People who are eligible for the payment, can fill in a form on the council’s website https:// beta.bathnes.gov.uk/council-tax-energy-rebate which is under the ‘other methods of payment’ heading. To prevent fraud people who pay by non-direct debit methods will get a letter from the council containing personal access code and council tax account number. Both of these need to be included on a webform along with bank details so the council can verify their details. Anyone who is not on the internet can visit Bath Welfare, Housing and Advice Service in Manvers Street or Keynsham & Midsomer Norton Library and Information Services. Providing they have their letter and bank details with them, a Customer Services officer will help them to fill in the webform. People can also contact Council Connect for guidance on 01225 39 40 41 Bank details must match the council-tax payer otherwise they will be rejected pending further checks, the council is advising these will take additional time to process.
34
Once the council has the bank details, under Cabinet Office protocol, it needs to verify them through a government system to prevent fraud and ensure the £150 gets to the right people. A reminder letter will go out in July and for those who don’t claim or get in touch by 31 July 2022, the council will credit the £150 to their Council Tax account so no one loses out. Already 43,000 eligible residents in Bath and North East Somerset who pay their council tax by direct debit have now received the payment. There have been a number of cases where it has not been possible to make payments to existing direct debit payers, for example when bill and bank account names do not match or the bank has rejected the payment. The council has been working to resolve this and expect to make payment in the coming days. The government announced earlier this year that residents living in properties in Council Tax bands A to D will receive a £150 energy rebate as a one-off payment to help with rises in fuel bills. The money does not have to be repaid.
Councillor Kevin Guy, council leader, said: “We have been working hard since the government announced this payment to set systems up to makes sure all eligible residents get their £150 towards fuel bills. It has been a huge undertaking distributing almost £9.6million. We have made payments to 43,000 people, who pay by direct debit and I am very pleased to see that for those residents who do not pay by direct debit they too will get their £150 in the coming weeks, provided their bank details are verified.” Families who do not qualify for the £150 energy rebate, for example those living in bands E and above, may qualify for a discretionary payment if they are on a low income or receive certain benefits. All awards will be for £150. Residents will be eligible for the discretionary fund if they meet the following criteria: They are not entitled to the main energy rebate scheme as they are not liable for council tax or their home is in council tax band E or above
They are directly liable for energy costs i.e. their name is on the electricity or gas bill They receive an income-based benefit including Universal Credit or Working Tax Credit OR have combined household earnings and pensions below £500 per week. The website includes a link to check households' Council Tax bands for anyone unsure which band their property is in. The council is also highlighting support that some families might not be aware of and is encouraging people who are struggling to pay their bills to seek help and advice before financial problems become a real crisis. More information is available online about free school meals vouchers, the Welfare Support Scheme , Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support , Discretionary Housing Payment, Welcome Cafes and Food Clubs, the BANES Food Finder, the Community Wellbeing Hub, Citizens Advice Bath and North East Somerset. Bought a hot tub? How to stop it costing you a fortune
2. Use the lid when not in use
Sales of hot tubs spiked during lockdown, but users may be in for a shock when they get their next energy bill. The way you use your hot tub can make a huge difference to the cost with some people seeing their bills soar by £100 a month, according to energy-switching site Flipper, which monitors the market for best prices for its members. Lay-Z-Spa, suppliers of the UK’s bestselling inflatable hot tub, estimate the average cost of running a hot tub is £40 a month based on customer feedback. But that assumes it is used for just 25 minutes, three times a week. Someone who has been jumping in every day during the hot weather could now be facing an energy bill which is a £100 a month higher than usual. So, to make sure you continue to enjoy your spa, without worrying about your bills, here are Flipper’s top six tips: 1.Keep the heater on between uses Most of the power consumed by a hot tub is used by the heater. Keeping it switched on maintains the temperature at a toasty 36-38˚C, which actually takes much less energy than having to reheat the water from a lower temperature every time you want to get in.
36
The lid isn’t there just to stop stuff falling in. If you don’t put the lid on when you aren’t using the hot tub the water will rapidly cool down – especially if the British weather is being its usual unpredictable self! And reheating the water uses lots of energy (see above). So, use the cover, clip it on properly and make sure there are not gaps, every time you get out. 3.Use a protector / underlay As well as losing heat from the top surface, your hot tub can also suffer if it is placed on a cold surface. To insulate the base (and protect from damage) you could get a special hot tub base protector, or some foam tiling from a DIY store. 4. Don’t (re)fill with cold water The water in your hot tub needs to be changed regularly. But rather than refilling only using the cold tap, when it gets to 4/5th (80%) full connect your hose to the hot water tap. This will reduce how much heating is required to get you tub back up to temperature (and how long you’ll have to wait before you can get back in). 5.Gimme Shelter’ One final thing that can cause the water to cool is placing your hot tub in an exposed place, where the ambient temperature or wind will rapidly chill the water. Putting it in a sheltered position, in a corner or near a fence will help. But avoid locating it under a tree so you don’t end up with leaves in the water come autumn.

FIRST BRISTOL BUSINESSES GET ON BOARD WITH NEW ECO PLUMBING SERVICE Eco-minded businesses across Bristol are signing up for the city’s new carbon-friendly gas and heating maintenance service, with plumbers on electric bikes.
“Cargo bikes are the perfect method of transport for small in-and-out jobs, so nippychecks will certainly be first plumbing service we call on in future.”
Last month saw the launch of nippychecks – a fully electric service which will see a team of engineers riding to properties and businesses to maintain boilers, central heating and electrical systems and appliances.
The new venture comes after a £24,000 investment in two new cargo bikes by South Gloucestershire business West Country Heating and Plumbing (WCHP).
The innovative service is already making waves in Bristol, with like-minded businesses jumping on board to adopt the service. Among them are lifestyle brand Spoke & Stringer, which operates out of three sites in Whiteladies Road, the Harbourside off Anchor Road and on Temple Quay, selling food, coffee, surf kit and clothing. The company’s founder Kristian Crews said: “Sustainably sourcing our food, coffee and products is a major part of what we do. So when we saw nippychecks launching we thought how well it reflected our values. “Hopefully many more service providers are going to follow suit in terms of creating eco-friendly ways of managing and maintaining Bristol’s property and facilities. What businesses need from the service industry is affordability and reliability, and nippychecks ticks both of those boxes.
42
With a range of 40 miles and a top speed of 15 mph, the bikes are cycle lane permitted and can carry up to 150kg of cargo – easily enough for a toolbox and spare boiler parts. Sam Blakeney, managing director of nippychecks and WCHP, said he was delighted with the initial attention that nippychecks was already receiving. “We went big and bold on the branding and wanted to make an impact in the city, but I’m still surprised about how much of an influence we’re having,” he said. “We’re happy to support Kristian and Spoke & Stringer, and we’ve had many other businesses – from lettings agents to plumbing parts wholesalers – commenting on the service and how innovative they think it is. “It’s a great start and we’re going to carry on our emissions mission, to cut congestion and improve air quality in Bristol by providing a service free from the constraints of traffic problems. “Of course our service is cost-effective and ethical, too, so we’re expecting many more businesses to come on board over the coming weeks and months. Go Nippy!”

“We are pleased to see that occupancy levels are now starting to return to their 2019 pre-pandemic levels, which is very good news, and projections suggest we are set for a strong 2022 and 2023.
Raphael Herzog, Chair of the BHA, said: “People have waited a long time to take some much-needed holidays after all the frustration and disruption of the lockdown restrictions.
“But we can always accommodate more guests and would urge people to think about their travel plans and avoid the risk of delays, disruption and disappointment by booking a staycation.”

New Bottle Yard film studios to be plastered with community-owned solar panels Bristol film treats like The Outlaws and Chloe will soon be created using oodles of community-owned green energy. The Bottle Yard Studios in Whitchurch has become so popular with film-makers that it will shortly open a second state-of-the-art facility - named TBY2 - half a mile from the main site. Its facilities will be powered by a massive 1MWp solar array made up of over 2000 solar panels. The original plan was to install a 283kWp solar array on the building, which is council-owned, but thanks to funding from Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC) the final scheme is over 3 times larger than the original. The new solar array is being funded from the Co-op’s latest share offer, which has already attracted over £1million from 366 investors. BEC’s community ownership model provides a return to their investor members whilst surplus revenues go back to the community through grants and investment into more local energy projects. Local contractor Solar South West is installing the array. BEC’s involvement at TBY2 has reduced project costs for Bristol City Council whilst also helping the city deliver on its climate targets. Will Houghton from BEC has been involved in the project development at Bottle Yard. He said: “Solar arrays are often designed to cover just a small part of a roof, to reduce costs. 46
But we’re in a climate crisis, and in order to meet Bristol’s climate goals we‘re aiming much higher than that. The Bottle Yard Studios is a massive site, with loads of opportunity for energy generation and CO2 reduction. So for this project we were determined to make full use of the available roof space”. The Bottle Yard Studios rooftop will become BEC’s 18th renewable energy project in the region. BEC’s solar energy generation is equivalent to 33% of solar electricity generation in Bristol, making it a significant player in the region. With the city’s commitments to net zero, Houghton believes that large rooftops should be seen as a major asset. A 2019 report from the Centre for Sustainable Energy showed that Bristol rooftops have the potential for 500 MW of financially viable solar PV, but only 6% had been installed so far. Bristol Energy Cooperative’s current share offer closes at the end of June. Find out more here: https://bristolenergy.coop/ share-offer-2022/
