FREE AND CHEAP KIDS' MEALS

‘Kids eat free’ wasn’t invented as a directed response to the current crisis, but some shops have expanded, tweaked or highlighted their children’s meal offers in light of it. Some of these offers have been launched specifically for the school holidays, so they may not be available in a few weeks.

Currently, you can find kids’ meal discounts at the following places: Asda: it’s £1 for any kids’ meal at Asda Cafés and there’s no requirement to buy an adult meal at the same time.

Ikea: kids’ meals are priced between 95p and £1.50 at its restaurants until 3 September.

Morrisons: Morrisons has a permanent 'kids eat free' offer for every adult meal purchased over £4.99.

Sainsbury’s: free kids’ meals are available with any £5.25 adult meal for the summer holidays. Tesco: the supermarket’s in-store cafés are offering free kids’ meals worth up to £3.25 when an adult spends 60p. The promotion runs until 26 August. 34

PRICE LOCKS ON ESSENTIAL ITEMS

With inflation getting out of hand, people will be relieved to hear some retailers are locking down prices on certain products for the foreseeable future.

Boots says it will keep more than 1,500 products ‘affordable’. Currys locked down prices for several electrical items, promising RRPs lower than in 2021.

Iceland has promised to keep more than 60 essential items at £1 until the end of the year. Superdrug has frozen prices on more than 130 own-brand essential items.

Chew Valley Lake - Grebe and Bittern Trails - are hard surfaced, all weather path suitable for pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchairs and covers a circuit 1.2km long, starting and finishing at the wooded Picnic Area.

Chew Valley Lake is a reservoir in the heart of the lush Chew Valley, 12 miles south of Bristol by road, making it a perfect escape from the city for a scenic countryside walk with baby on good paths.Part of Bristol Water, Chew Valley Lake is also an establish wildlife haven and visited by many different species of wildfowl such as the Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck and Canada Geese.

Two short nature walks – the Grebe and Bittern trails, have been created at Chew Valley Lake to allow the visitors to enjoy the scenery and watch for visiting wildfowl. Both trails are well marked and the Grebe trail in particular is well surfaced for walking with pushchairs, offering easy strolling on flat path s for those seeking a breath of fresh air with baby or small children or the disabled.

There are two visitor car parks and picnic areas at Chew Valley Lake, both accessible from Wally Lane between the villages of Chew Stoke and Bishop Sutton. This walk starts from the first car park area closest to Chew Stoke (where the excellent Salt & Malt fish and chips restaurant is located) and covers the lake walk to the second picnic area, the Grebe and the Bittern nature trails but it is possible to start your walk from either car park and cover as much or as little of the trails with baby as you would like. From Car Park 1 take the path near the car park entrance (opposite end to the car park) and follow the well made path along the edge of Chew Valley Lake and reed beds. There are some benches along this part of the walk and plenty of opportunities to take in the views of the lake, Denny Island and beyond to the Mendip Hills.

The path continues into the second car park where there are plenty of picnic benches. Walk through the picnic area and join the Grebe trail at the east end of the parking area. Take the lakeside path and walk along past the reed beds. From here you can clearly see Denny Island – a wildlife reserve and breeding site for wildfowl and there are continued good views of Chew Valley Lake. Walk onwards past the pond on your left to the wooden bridge and start of the woods and the Bittern Trail. If walking with baby in a pushchair or with a dog, continue past the bridge on the Grebe trail. If you have a baby carrier, good shoes or are accompanied by a small wildlife enthusiast (!) and want to continue on the 1.5 km Bittern Trail loop or visit the bird hide, cross over the wooden bridge and turn right taking the footpath along the edge of the woods, keeping an eye out for the Kingfishers that can often be spotted here.

Follow the path to the edge of the woods and through a parking area, before picking up the path on the other side and passing by meadow and through the woodland.

From £895*

for a fully fi tted electric garage door.

WAS £1,354 INCLUDING VAT. On your right hand side you will pass the path to the bird hide where wildlife enthusiasts can go and watch for birds and wildfowl. Continuing past this path you will join a section of board-walk. When you reach the end of the board-walk you should turn left to follow the grassy path back along the edge of the woods, keeping the hedge on your right. This will return you to the start of the Bittern Trail and views out over Chew Valley Lake at the wooden bridge. Cross back over the bridge and turn right.

Follow the trail back along the hedge and through the woods until you return to the second parking area. From here retrace your steps to the first parking area where you can enjoy a picnic or refreshments from Salt & Malt.

COST OF LIVING: DISABLED PEOPLE TO GET £150 PAYMENT NEXT MONTH

Millions of households will receive a £150 cost-of-living payment from the end of next month, the Government has said.

The one-off payment, announced in May, will be paid automatically to people who receive certain disability benefits from September 20, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said. The majority of eligible people will receive their payment within a couple of weeks of this date, it added.

The payment is intended to help disabled people with the rising cost of living and the higher costs they face, such as for care and mobility needs. It comes on top of other cost-of-living payments totalling £650 for disabled people on low incomes.

All households will receive £400 to help towards energy bills and an extra £150 for properties in council tax bands A-D in England. Overall, the Government has announced a £37 billion package of support to help people with rising costs. 38 Minister for disabled people, health and work Chloe Smith said in a statement online: “We know disabled people can face additional costs, which is why we are acting to help reduce the financial pressures on the most vulnerable.

“This £150 disability payment is on top of the £1,200 most low-income benefit claimants will also receive and alongside wider support targeted at disabled people, including help with transport and prescription costs. “We know it’s a worrying time for some people and I’d urge them to check they are getting all the support on offer by searching Help for Households.”

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi said in an online statement: “We know that rising prices faced by many countries around the world are a significant worry for many people here in the UK, especially those most vulnerable to additional costs.

“Today’s announcement that disabled people will begin to receive an additional £150 payment from the end of September reinforces our commitment to help UK households through the challenging times ahead.”
