A CORONATION CELEBRATION ON BRUNEL’S SS GREAT BRITAIN

Toast His Majesty with a royal afternoon tea experience on board the ship

Enjoy high tea like a royal, with a delicious selection of savouries and desserts served on the world’s first great ocean liner.

Step back in time and experience the glamour of the SS Great Britain’s stunning First Class Dining Saloon.

Mark a historic weekend by enjoying afternoon tea on board a Great British institution.

On Sunday 7 May, Brunel’s SS Great Britain will celebrate the coronation of King Charles III with a right-royal afternoon tea experience.

Visitors can step on board the ship and tuck into a delicious selection of treats in the ship’s luxurious First Class Dining Saloon. Guests can choose either a 1pm or a 3pm sitting, and will be able to indulge in finger sandwiches, mini savouries, scrumptious scones, and elegant macaroons.

The ship’s First Class Dining Saloon would have hosted first-class passengers during voyages, and has been lovingly restored by the SS Great Britain Trust’s Interpretation team.

Known as the world’s first great ocean liner, SS Great Britain now rests in the very dock where Brunel built her – the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol’s Floating Harbour.

The SS Great Britain’s afternoon tea experience will run on selected Sundays across the summer. In addition to the Coronation weekend, guests can experience tea in the most opulent of settings on the following dates:

June 25th

July 23rd

August 20th

September 24th

The Coronation afternoon tea experience costs £39.95 per adult (£25 per child) and includes full access to the ship, the historic dockyard, dry dock and museums – from midday until close.

The ship’s royal connections

Over the years, the ship has played host to a series of royal visitors, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who stepped aboard on 26 July 1985 to explore the ship and open the museum’s maritime heritage centre.

Her consort, HRH Prince Philip also had a special connection with the SS Great Britain, having been on deck as Brunel’s great ship returned to Bristol in 1970. HRH Prince Philip became the SS Great Britain Trust’s first patron, a position now taken on by HRH The Princess Royal.

The SS Great Britain’s links with royalty began in 1843 when Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, was invited to attend its launch in Bristol. Queen Victoria also visited the ship on 22 April 1845, during the SS Great Britain’s five-month stay on the Thames for her final fitting out. Brunel himself showed the Queen and Prince Albert a model of the engines and screw propeller.

The visit definitely left an impression on Queen Victoria, who wrote in her journal later that day; ‘All the fittings & decorations are very fine, & everything made as comfortable as possible, but I should not much care to go to sea, with such a quantity of passengers, or in such a long, narrow ship.’

Key facts about Brunel’s SS Great Britain

Brunel’s SS Great Britain is the top-rated visitor attraction in Bristol and top 10 museum in the UK (TripAdvisor 2022). The museum was awarded ‘Europe’s most welcoming museum’ in the European Museum of the Year Awards (2019).

The SS Great Britain now rests in the very dock where Brunel built her – the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol’s Floating Harbour.

Known as ‘the world’s first great ocean liner’, the ship sailed around the world 32 times, travelling more than 1,000,000 miles at sea.

Voted the second Greatest Briton of all time, (after Winston Churchill), Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the 19th century engineering heroes.

At the SS Great Britain’s launch in 1843 she was by far the largest ship in the world; and the first ever to combine a metal hull and screw propulsion.

eat:BEDMINSTER RETURNS TO EAST STREET THIS APRIL

Over 60 food and drink stalls will take over East Street for eat:Bedminster on the Saturday 15th April showcasing the very best of local food & drink alongside Bedminster’s great hospitality offer.

Created to celebrate local street food and producers, eat:Bedminster will see East Street transformed between 10am and 4pm, spotlighting amazing food and drink. This will be one of the first of the busy summer season for eat:Festivals, with over 30 festivals taking place all year throughout Westcountry towns including Clevedon, Taunton and Burnham-on-Sea.

A not-for-profit social enterprise, eat:Festivals hosts one-day, award-winning food & drink festivals across the Westcountry, to help connect communities with the local producers and showcase the great local food and drink surrounding them. The festivals are low-cost for traders to attend and for visitors to attend with no entry fees or tickets required.

eat:Bedminster festival is backed by Bedminster Business Improvement District (BID) to connect the Bristol community together in a celebration of local businesses.

Shining a light on treats in the area, eat:Bedminster will have everything from street food vendors, handmade preserves and award-winning patisseries, to farmer’s market favourites and plant based artisan dishes. Visitors can expect to meet local makers, sample and purchase the best food and drink on offer, as well as the businesses on their doorstep.

Due to its popularity, this year the festival will expand into Dean Street to make way for more producers and street entertainment, including family friendly shows, art workshops, strolling entertainers and a folk filled family show The Oak, The Ash and The Standing Stones performed by Tidal Tales Collective CIC. This will provide a cheery backdrop to browsing the stalls on offer, as pockets of entertainment will be dotted throughout the market.

The two art workshops – See Bedminster in a Different Light and Postcard Pit-Stop are both free to take part in. See Bedminster in a Different Light is a chance to sketch, draw or paint alongside artist Jack Hicks as he captures Bedminster sketching in the open air. Postcard Pit-Stop will be near the East St Emporium.

16

Here visitors can take part in a location-specific, fun, free printmaking. Visitors will make lino-printed postcards inspired by the event.

While recognising that fresh, local produce is integral to the strength and health of our communities, eat:Festivals also celebrate inclusivity within food and drink. eat:Bedminster will cater for all dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Low and no-alcohol options will also be available on the day.

eat:Bedminster will also be fully accessible for all to attend. The East Street market layout will ensure that buggies, pushchairs and wheelchair users can easily move through the outdoor space. The festival is free to attend and dog friendly so the whole family is welcome to come along.

Bev Milner Simonds, Director and Founder of eat:Festivals said: "This is the second edition of eat:Bedminster and our partnership with Bedminster BID has given us the opportunity to grow the festival and keep shining a spotlight on the local businesses that are here all year round with food, drink and entertainment. We’re looking forward to helping the community discover producers and make connections – and hopefully turn them into new regular visitors.”

Simon Dicken, Chair of Bedminster BID said: “It is great to be able to give Bedminster a second edition of eat:Bedminster. Not only does it give support to local traders but we can shine a light on new businesses in the area. East Street will be buzzing with music, good food and independent traders on every corner.”

APERTURE – A FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Aperture is the first concept of the photography exposure basics.

In brief, the aperture works like our pupils; it’s the opening of the camera lens, which controls the amount of light that goes through the lens to the camera sensor.

This basic photography concept has a direct effect on the exposure; the wider the aperture the brighter the image will be, and the narrower the aperture the darker it will be. It also plays a significant role in the depth of field and sharpness of the image.

The max. and min. aperture of the lens is defined by a value known as “F-stop”. The larger the F-stop number is, the smaller/narrower the aperture and vice versa. This number follows a sequence like this:

The best aperture camera settings will depend on the light, the subject that you’re shooting, and the final look that you want in your image.

You can see all the main effects of this exposure setting in the photography basics cheat sheet for aperture.

18

So if you’re trying to understand aperture better, these tips ought to help. If you want more info next week we’ll hit up talking about shutter speed and what it does to your images.

HAY FEVER? TRY THESE SIMPLE EIGHT THINGS WHEN SYMPTOMS APPEAR

Holy hay fever season, Batman! With the sun finally out it’s tempting to wanna blast off and take advantage but so many of us in the South West know that comes with a price.

Hay fever can make spending time outside downright miserable, no matter how sunny it is. But hey, just stuff some tissues in your pockets and hope for the best - because nobody should miss out on summer fun because of a runny nose.

So, with wedding season in our midst - as well as the King’s Coronation just weeks away (at time of writing) - the summer sunshine over the horizon and a whole heap of Bank Holidays we need to fill with activities, the last thing we all need is to be struck down by hay fever.

Fortunately, while there’s no definitive cure for hay fever, there are a few things you can do at home to ease your symptoms...

What you can do to ease your symptoms when pollen counts are high.

These eight simple tips could help ease your hay fever symptoms during high pollen seasons:

• Putting Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen

• Wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting into your eyes

• Showering and changing your clothes after you have been outside, in order to wash the pollen away

• Staying indoors whenever possible

BRISTOL CITY LEAP

In January, the Mayor signed a worldfirst partnership that will secure over £1 billion of investment to help make Bristol carbon neutral and climate resilient by 2030.

The joint venture with Ameresco Limited, and Vattenfall Heat UK as an essential subcontractor, will transform the way the city generates, distributes, stores and uses energy.

The ground-breaking venture, known as Bristol City Leap, will rapidly increase the scale and pace of investment in low carbon energy infrastructure such as wind energy, solar energy, low carbon heat networks as well as other energy efficiency measures and smart energy systems.

EXPANDING BRISTOL’S LOW CARBON HEAT NETWORK

During the first five years of the twenty-year partnership, the private sector will invest at least £424 million in a range of large infrastructure projects to create 1,000 new jobs and reduce Bristol’s carbon footprint by 140,000 tonnes. Projects will include a major expansion of Bristol’s award-winning Heat Network, providing local businesses and residents with access to reliable, affordable low carbon heat from sustainable sources.

Analysis has shown that a low carbon heat network is one of the most cost-effective ways to help Bristol achieve its One City Climate Strategy aims by 2030. The council has adopted a Local Development Order (LDO) to give the city’s Heat Network advance permission to be more easily expanded in the years ahead.

The LDO will provide heat networks with similar permissions as other core infrastructure like water, telecoms and electricity. The LDO simplifies and speeds up the planning process of this essential infrastructure for developers, granting permission for the installation of the heat network including pipes, cable, wires and signs. Bristol City Leap has committed to no new fossil fuelled heat sources being attached to this key infrastructure, with existing gas assets phased out by 2030.

The LDO will be subject to appropriate restrictions, conditions, prohibitions, and additional planning permission where necessary to ensure the installations do not have a significant or detrimental impact on its surrounding environment.

The first phase of the Keynsham Recycling Hub has been completed and the new Reuse and Recycling Centre will open on Monday 17 April.

Public access to the new Reuse and Recycling Centre will be via World’s End Lane, which has been widened to a two-way road with a dedicated cycle path and footpath.

Visitors to the new centre will be advised to use the signposted route via Broadmead Lane roundabout and Ashmead Road.

All council operational vehicles will use a separate site entrance in Pixash Lane.

The current Keynsham Recycling Centre in Pixash Lane will close and be incorporated into the construction.

Mandy Bishop, chief operating officer of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “This new purpose-built public household waste and recycling centre will be quicker and easier for residents to use, with expanded recycling provision to make it possible for people to recycle even more.”

Construction on Phase 2 of the Keynsham Recycling Hub will continue, but site traffic will use the main entrance on Pixash Lane. It is anticipated that Phase 2 will be completed over the winter.

Landscaping and tree and hedgerow planting around the new recycling centre will be ongoing as the correct size and species of trees become available.

Information on the new Reuse and Recycling Centre can be found on the council website including directions and a layout of the new site.

The opening times will remain the same:

Monday to Friday 8am to 4.15pm

Saturday: 9am to 3.45pm

Sunday 9am to 1pm

Bank Holidays 8am to 3.45pm

More information about the Keynsham Recycling Hub project is available on the council website: www.bathnes.gov.uk/ keynshamrecyclinghub

OUT AND ABOUT IN BRISLINGTON WEST WITH JOS AND ANDREW

THE BOATYARD UPDATE:

We recently attended a meeting with Clarion, the owners of the Boatyard, to get an update on their unfinished development near the Totterdown Bridge. As residents may know, not much has been happening on the site since the previous construction company, Mid Group, entered into administration last year. Clarion has been dealing with legal issues since then but now has a new construction partner to finish the development. The good news is, while new designs for the interior of the building are being worked out, Clarion are offering to temporarily pull back the hoardings so that we can reopen the footpath, cycle path and bus lane, something we have been calling for for several months. The recent removal of one of the cranes will also help facilitate this. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the building will be occupied anytime soon and the latest forecast is a completion date of early 2025!

Local people were also concerned about the recent collapse in the riverbank by the new development. We have been assured that the building is resting on dozens of piles and is sitting on a concrete ‘raft’ and is completely unaffected by the changing riverbank profile. However, Clarion will be reprofiling the riverbank to improve its appearance, perhaps with rock matting that will also allow for reed beds to grow. We also asked about litter on the riverbank and the developers have promised to make sure everything is kept clean and tidy.

ANOTHER TREE FOR WEST TOWN LANE:

While we were helping to plant three new trees on West Town Lane recently, a local resident told us about an empty tree pit near the junction with Hungerford Road, which had become a bit of a trip hazard. We reported it and have just heard that a new tree will hopefully be planted there this season.

NEXT STEPS TAKEN TOWARDS DELIVERING MORE COUNCIL HOUSING IN LOCKLEAZE

A development of much needed new council homes in Lockleaze has taken another step closer as the council look to secure ownership of a former pub that needs to be demolished to allow work to begin.

In 2021/22, Bristol built 2,563 new homes – exceeding the Mayor’s ambitious mani festo target. As the city continues tackling the housing crisis, the council is looking to build 47 homes on disused land at Branwhite Close in Lockleaze.

In order to get the development site ready, the council has been working hard to acquire two buildings: the former pub on Gains borough Square and a privately owned home on Branwhite Close. The site previously had council homes on the land which were demolished some years ago as part of a redevelopment project.

Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) have been secured for both sites, and barring any further legal challenges, it is hoped work can start onsite later this year.

Councillor Tom Renhard, Cabinet Member for Housing Delivery and Homes, said: “We are committed to doing everything we can to tackle the housing shortage in the city, and making sure that this affordable council-owned housing scheme, which will provide homes to 47 families, can be delivered. These will add to the 474 affordable homes built in Bristol in 2021/22.

“It is not just about the number of new homes we build; we are committed to developing mixed and balanced communities, working hard to make sure any new homes are suitable for the surrounding local area. Lockleaze is going through a big transformation at the moment, and we are working hard to make sure all the developments complement each other, as well as bringing forward additional amenities for community members to use.

“As well as enabling the housing development, the demolition of the pub will come as a relief to local people, as it has become an eye sore, and a target for fly tipping and graffiti in recent years.

“I look forward to finally being able to break ground on this site, hopefully later this year.”

The pub on Gainsborough Square has been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair for many years. The owner of the property was recently fined after failing to take care of the site, along with two other buildings in the city that they also own or manage.

Several approaches were made to buy the property at full market value. However, the owners were unwilling to sell, so in order to progress, the council made a CPO to acquire the property.

The owner objected to the CPO and an inspector appointed by the Secretary of State was asked to consider the objection and decided that the CPO should go ahead.

If there are no further legal challenges, the council will be the legal owners of the pub in late August.

BRISTOL’S BUOYANT ECONOMY

One of the questions that we get asked a lot, is why Bristol is such a buoyant market, rarely affected by events (political or otherwise) going on in the rest of the country. One of the many reasons (and a short trip to the city will highlight lots of the others), is Bristol’s thriving economy and the many employers who choose to base themselves here. Let’s take a brief look at a handful of them.

Bristol is home to a diverse range of industries and businesses. From cutting-edge technology firms to traditional manufacturing companies, the city has a lot to offer those looking for employment opportunities. One of the biggest employers in Bristol is Airbus. This international aerospace company has a major presence in the city, with over 4,000 employees working at its Filton site. Airbus designs, manufactures, and supplies aircraft, and is one of the world’s leading aerospace companies. With a reputation for innovation and quality, Airbus is a great place to work for those with an interest in aviation and engineering.

Another major employer is the University of Bristol itself. This prestigious institution is one of the top universities in the UK, with students coming from across the world to study here and it’s also home to around 6,000 staff members. With a range of faculties and departments, the University of Bristol offers a diverse range of employment opportunities. Whether you’re an academic, researcher, or support staff member, there’s sure to be a role for you at this world-class institution.

If you’re looking for a career in healthcare, then the NHS is a major employer in Bristol. With several hospitals and healthcare centres, many with acclaimed specialisms, the NHS provides a wide range of healthcare services. From doctors and nurses to administrative staff and support workers, there are a variety of roles and opportunities available within the NHS in Bristol.

The financial services sector is also well-represented in Bristol, with several major employers in the city. One of the largest is Hargreaves Lansdown, a financial services company that provides investment management and advice to clients across the UK. With over 1,500 employees in Bristol, Hargreaves Lansdown is a great place to work for those interested in finance and investment.

In addition to these big employers, Bristol is also home to a thriving creative and digital sector. Companies such as Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace and Gromit, and the BBC’s Natural History Unit have offices in the city, along with a range of digital and tech startups. With a vibrant arts and culture scene, Bristol is a great place to work for those with a creative flair and an interest in this sector.

Another major employer in Bristol is the Ministry of Defence. The MOD employs over 5,000 people in Bristol. From engineers and scientists to administrative staff and support workers, the MOD offers a range of career opportunities for those interested in defence and security.

For those seeking a career in retail, there are some pretty major household names, some very well-known brands and lots of wonderful independent retail outlets all across the city.

Last but definitely not least, Bristol’s food game is very strong, and the food and drink sector is well-represented. Companies such as Thatchers Cider, Pieminister, and The Bristol Beer Factory all have a presence in the city, along with a range of restaurants and cafes, with an eclectic mix of cuisine from every inch of the globe. With a growing food and drink scene, Bristol is a great place to work for those interested in the hospitality industry.

FOUR CLOSED PUBS IN BEDMINSTER IS SET TO REOPEN

Good news for Bedminster residents! After a few weeks of closure, London Inn pub is gonna be back in business on April 14th. Just last weekend, one of the Bedminster’s four pubs reopened after suddenly closing last month...and now it’s time for London Inn to fire up the grill! We can’t wait for Friday - come get your grub and drinks on at this local joint!

On March 29, the London Inn, Albert Lounge, Black Cat and Tap & Barrel – all pubs within 200 meters of the heart of Bedminster – suddenly closed when the licensee for all four pubs said she could come along getting stuck prices and bills and the cost of living crisis.

All four bars are owned by the same person who rented all four to the same businesswoman. Now it is hoped that each lease will be taken over individually – and that seems to be happening gradually.

Last week, Darren and Caroline Godfrey announced they had taken over the lease on West Street’s Black Cat, with local couple Mark and Katie Whiteman taking over management of the pub. The pub officially reopened on Good Friday 7th April and enjoyed a busy Easter weekend.

Now the London Inn has announced that it will open this Friday. A statement on the pub’s social media read:

“Great news – we will be reopening on Friday 14 April. We will have live singers on Fridays, karaoke on Saturdays and Sundays and bingo on Tuesdays. We will also be hosting quiz nights and BBQs. I hope you all stand behind us and support us in this new venture. We hope to see many locals and also new faces.”

HOME IMPROVEMENT TIPS

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR SUCCESSFUL WALL PAPER HANGING

There are some tasks that you may need to do before hanging your wallpaper. Check our list to ensure your walls are fully ready for wallpaper. With this guide you will get the best finish possible and avoid any nasty surprises further into the project.

HAVE YOU REMOVED ANY EXISTING WALLPAPER?

Doing this will give you a smooth finish and avoid air bubbles and creases appearing when you hang the new wallpaper

ARE YOUR WALLS FRESHLY PLASTERED?

If so, have you sealed them with wall sealer? Applying wall sealer, also known as wall size, seals the porous surface of the wall and improves the adhesion of the wallpaper paste. It also aids the slide of the wallpaper, useful when you’re matching patterns or hanging it in awkward areas like window recesses.

HAVE YOU LINED THE WALLS WITH LINING PAPER?

Hanging lining paper prevents the new wallpaper from shrinking when it’s hung, which leads to gaps between the lengths of paper. You may also want to hang lining paper if your walls have any stains or small imperfections in the surface, as it will help to disguise this.

HAVE YOU BOUGHT ENOUGH WALLPAPER?

It helps to estimate the amount of wallpaper you’ll need for your project. When you measure the height and length of the walls you want to wallpaper, also measure the windows and doors.

Allow extra for wastage. We recommend 10% extra, and any unopened rolls can be returned to the store you bought them from. Also, allow for extra when using paper with a large repeat pattern – the pattern repeat is usually stated on the roll label or product information.

ARE ALL THE ROLLS OF WALLPAPER THE SAME BATCH NUMBER?

Make sure all the rolls have the same batch number printed on the label, as the colours and in some instances, the finish, can vary between batches.

HAVE YOU PLANNED HOW YOU’RE GOING TO HANG THE WALLPAPER?

We recommend hanging wallpaper vertically unless the pattern requires it to be hung horizontally. If hanging over lining paper, hanging it in the opposite direction to the lining paper means that the seams won’t fall in the same place and create ridges.

DOES THE WALLS HAVE ANY FIXING ON THEM?

If so, unscrew the fixings before papering, leaving the wall plugs in place. Mark the position of each one by pushing a matchstick (with the head broken off) into the plug. Leave it slightly proud so you can find the hole and reuse it later. Also its recommended that the first piece of paper you hang starts from the corner that the window or door is in so any joins are hidden from view.

Happy hanging folks!

BRISTOL ROVERS COULD BE MOVING

Bristol Rovers could be on the move! They’re checking out a spot in St Philip’s Marsh, which is practically right next door. All the paperwork has been signed by Conygar Bristol Ltd. and the people who own Bristol Fruit Market -- they must really love football.

A new stadium for Rovers could be built as part of the regeneration of the site, which a club statement says “represents a great opportunity for the region and the football club”.

“The club shares the aspirations set out in the Bristol Temple Quarter Development Framework and looks forward to working with the Council and its partners to make these a reality.

“Over the next few months, we will work with Conygar to play our part in creating a vision for the site that supports the needs of the city as well as ensuring that we protect the long-term interests of the football club.

“Bristol Rovers Football Club has been a part of these discussions for the past two-and-a-half years and we will now work with Conygar to finalise the plans unlocking the potential of the site for the city and the football club.”

Rovers president Wael Al Qadi said: “This announcement marks a big milestone in our journey for a new stadium.

“We have been in positive discussions with the team at Conygar for two-and-ahalf years and we are delighted that they have now formally secured a deal for the site.

“We look forward to working with them to finalise our agreement, whilst maintaining the long-term future of Bristol Rovers Football Club.”

Greg Miller Cheevers CEO of Conygar added: “St Philip’s Marsh and the Fruit Market site hold exciting possibilities that could help to transform this area into something positive for the city.

“We have been in discussion with Bristol Rovers for a significant time. These discussions between Conygar and the club are meaningful and ongoing and I look forward to continuing to work with Wael and the club to finalise a solution that works for all parties.”

GRANDPARENTS COULD BOOST STATE PENSION BY £1,514 A YEAR

Family members who look after children under the age of 12 can add £1,514 to their state pension by applying for specified adult childcare credits.

Grandparents who look after their grandchildren for just one hour a week could be left thousands of pounds worse off in retirement after failing to claim a lesser known state pension boo Grandparents could boost state pension by £1,514 a yea st.

Just a small number of people are claiming specified adult childcare credits (SACC) which gives family members, often grandparents, who have looked after children under the age of 12 national insurance (NI) credits that can be used to increase or even enable entitlement to the state pension.

HMRC received more than 21,000 applications last year, according to data obtained by wealth manager St James Place (SJP) following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, but SJP estimates the number of applications received is less than a ninth of the number of grandparents who could be eligible.

In fact, it said more than 150,000 grandparents could be missing out.

The revelation comes after the state pension saw its biggest ever rise this week, increasing from 10.1 per cent, from £185.15 to £203.85 per week. Despite the hike, it is still not enough to beat inflation which currently sits at 10.4 per cent.

To bump their pension up, grandparents are encouraged to see if they can apply for SACC.

These credits were introduced from April 2011 and you may be entitled to receive them if you are a grandparent, or other family member, who cares for a child under 12.

There’s no minimum number of hours they need to be looking after the child, however, the parent must be registered for child benefit, even if they aren’t actually receiving it.

This is because the child benefit is what entitles the parent to NI credits if they either aren’t working, or are working but earning less than £190 a week.

If the parent starts to earn enough through employment to get a NI credit, the credit they received from their child benefit is available and can be transferred to a family member who’s helping to look after the child.

Previous research by Age UK indicates that 40 per cent of the nation’s grandparents over the age of 50 have provided regular childcare for their grandchildren.

Under new state pension rules, you need at least 10 qualifying years on your NI record to get any state pension. You need 35 qualifying years to get the full new state pension, or a proportion between 10 and 35 qualifying years.

For someone who can boost their credits from 30 to 35 years that could be equivalent to £1,514 per year more than they receive when they retire.

Claire Trott, divisional director for retirement and holistic planning at St. James’s Place, said: “The state pension is the cornerstone for many when planning for retirement, so it is crucial to make sure you have accrued enough NI credits.

“With so many grandparents helping out with childcare it’s important to remember you don’t have to sacrifice your state pension to lend a hand and support your family.”

She said that although it may be tempting for those who are subject to the high income child benefit tax charge to claim NI credits to save hassle, but for those whose parents are helping to take care of their children, it can be a great way to support them in the future.

Trott adds: “If you’re earning national insurance in your own right, you can pass on the credit to a parent if needed. It is a simple process, but the child benefit needs to be claimed, although a tick of a box means no payment will be made and so no tax charge will be incurred.”

“There are also other ways to top up your state pension if you are not eligible for the SACC, such as regular payments or purchasing missing years, which is currently possible back to 2006. The state pension is good value and shouldn’t be dismissed.”
