PREPARE TO JOURNEY TO A PARALLEL WORLD

The world’s first Amazement Park® is opening in Bristol on Saturday 30th July An inspiring new world is waiting to be discovered in St. Philips, Bristol – as tickets for the hugely anticipated Wake The Tiger are on sale now. Blurring the lines between an experiential art gallery, interactive theme park and detailed film set, all with a surreal and beautiful twist, Wake The Tiger is set to offer an immersive adventure for all ages. From the artistic team behind the ground-breaking festival, Boomtown Fair, attendees should prepare to explore a multi-layered labyrinth of creative environments and fantastical wonders. Wake The Tiger will invite attendees to step through a portal into the parallel world of ‘Meridia’, where they will enter an old abandoned factory once inhabited by a mysterious community of adventurers staging wild experiments. The other worldly concept has been dreamt up with the aim of inspiring ways to reconnect people with their environment and community. With 27 distinct spaces within the experience, the art installations explore themes of connection and innovation, inspiration and discovery. 4

From the underground networks of the Mycelium Room at the factory's core, to the intergalactic explorations that await near the end of the journey, a world of intrigue and inspiration awaits. Guests will travel through illuminated singing ice, underwater worlds, mechanical chambers and elder forests in search of the secrets of the Lost Meridians. On sale now for the long-awaited opening on Saturday 30th July, tickets for Wake The Tiger are priced from £16.50. The voyage through the parallel world is anticipated to last around an hour. Following the experience, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy high quality food and drink in the Amazement Park’s® stand out cafe. Lak Mitchell, Creative Director of Wake The Tiger said: “You have to see it to believe it. Wake The Tiger is an abandoned time capsule of fantastical experiences just waiting to be discovered. It will invite you to explore connections with the environment around you as well as challenge you to transform the world we all live in. This is a vision that plays into and expands on everything we have spent our lives building, taking raw underground art and fusing it with the latest technology.

We can’t wait for guests to explore what we have created in the heart of Bristol.” 5

Five miles from Pilton, home of the legendary Glastonbury Festival, the village of Evercreech is preparing to host its own unique event that is every bit as ground-breaking as its illustrious neighbour. But instead of the world’s biggest music artists, Wise Fest 2022 will present some of the best names and most popular products from the world of alcohol-free drinks with an excellent supporting cast.

The festival will draw from over 450 products available through the online store https:// wisebartender.co.uk which was recently named best smaller online retailer at the online retailer awards.

“Summer is the perfect time to dive in and discover some new drink options and experiment with some different combinations” explained Wise Bartender founder Tom Ward. “Alcohol-free craft beers were some of the first drinks to shake-off their reputation for Wise Fest has been created by Wise poor taste, and leading specialists such as Bartender, the UK’s leading retailer of Nirvana, Big Drop and Wild Beer provide a alcohol-free drinks, and is a three-day festival great introduction to the full-flavoured range held at the company’s base in the village. It is now available. Spirits have been catching up designed to provide a family-friendly and have come a long way with brands like environment in which visitors can discover Sea Arch, Anon, Caleño, Myth and Fluère a range of traditional and innovative alcoheading a range of drinks that are delicious hol-free drinks whilst also enjoying delicious on their own, paired with a mixer or as a base food and listening to some of the best local ingredient for an alcohol-free cocktail. There bands around. From alcohol-free beers, are so many fantastic drinks to discover wines and ciders to spirits, cocktails, and Wise Fest brings them all together in a kombuchas, meads, sodas and functional relaxed and enjoyable environment.” drinks, Wise Fest is the place to explore the vast range of exciting drinks that have Yet such an event would have been exploded onto the market. unthinkable when Tom set up the business in April 2017. 6

“Alcohol-free drinks still had a reputation for poor quality, the choice wasn’t great and there was no demand for them” he explained. “Except my research showed that there was a demand, it was just that no-one was listening to it. But that demand has gathered momentum, is still growing today and is catered for by Wise Bartender.” According to a study published by IWSR Drinks Market Analysis[1], no- and lowalcohol beer, cider, wine, spirits, and ready-to-drink (RTD) products grew by more than +6% in volume in 10 key global focus markets in 2021, and now command a 3.5% volume share of the industry. There are many reasons behind consumption of lower ABV alternatives, and research shows that moderation rather than abstinence is the most common reason for choosing a low or no alcohol drink, with 43% of adults who have purchased them saying that they are a substitution in place of alcohol for certain occasions rather than abstaining altogether.

Wise Fest runs at Wayside Farm, Evercreech, BA4 6QW from Friday 15th July to Sunday 17th July, with a pub quiz at 7pm on Friday, music between 7-9pm from covers duo 34 South on Saturday and Eddie Dean on Sunday. Street Food will be available all weekend from family-run village pub The Bell Inn, Evercreech and interactive sessions will introduce visitors to specific aspects of the drinks available. Emma Newman @ Emma_Sobersonic will be talking sobriety on Saturday 1-2pm, followed by a Saturday AF Beer Club live tasting at 2pm featuring beers from Lucky Saint, Mash Gang, The Wild Beer Co, Lowtide Brewing Co & Big Drop Brewing Co. And if cocktails are more your thing join the live cocktail making session at 3pm on Saturday. Further details and free tickets are available through Eventbrite.

“As demand continues to grow, alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks are becoming more commonplace” added Ward “and availability has started to increase in restaurants, pubs, bars, supermarkets and bottle shops as well as online. The innovation pipeline shows no sign of slowing down with advances in taste, pack format and education particularly noticeable. This is great news for drinkers who want to experiment with a wider choice of alcohol-free drinks and Wise Fest 2022 is a great place to start their journey of discovery.” Further research from The Portman Group[2], which was established to ensure that alcohol producers do all they can to promote “the responsible use of alcohol” and social responsibility, identified that almost one in three (32%) of UK drinkers in 2021 ‘semi-regularly’ consumed low and no alcohol products compared to one in four (25%) in 2020. The demand for good quality, full-flavoured alcohol-free drinks is definitely growing and Wise Fest 2022 is a celebration of all the incredible brands that are just waiting to be discovered.

WHITE HORSE WESTBURY-ON-TRYM OPEN AGAIN

One of Bristol’s most popular pub restaurants, The White Horse in Westbury-on-Trym, has reopened under new experienced management after being closed for several weeks. The pub, popular for its Sunday lunches and quality food, has been taken on by the team that run one of Bristol’s oldest pubs, Ye Shakespeare, and helped to establish restaurants including Mint Room and 4,500 Miles From Delhi in the city. The 14 existing staff, including the chefs, have been retained and the White Horse in High Street, will continue to concentrate on high quality food for the community. Srinivas Murthy, who leads the new management team, said: “We expect to introduce some changes over time but initially we want to get The White Horse back open with the same menu as before and welcome the regular customers back. “We are hoping there will be demand for us to extend opening to Tuesdays and we plan to introduce afternoon teas. We want to talk to customers about the food they would like to see served here. The pub dates back to the 17th century and has always been a popular place for people from Westbury, Henleaze and Clifton to come and enjoy good food in a great atmosphere.” The pub was closed for three weeks after the previous management departed and the Bristol-based team that have taken over have a strong track record of managing restaurants and pubs. Ye Shakespeare is a drinks-led pub while The White Horse is known for its quality food. Both have long histories of serving their local communities. ExpressionsArts Festivalreturnsto celebrateits10th anniversary A festival of contemporary art and music returns this month (July) after a two year pause and celebrates its tenth anniversary with an ambitious new exhibition. Imagined Landscapes, showcases artwork created by artists supported by the Bristol-based social care charity Milestones Trust through its Expressions creative arts programme. Expressions encourages participants living with mental health needs and learning disabilities to develop new creative skills. The progressive annual programme has a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, as well as making the arts more accessible. The contemporary exhibition at Paintworks in Bristol will be the culmination of the year-long programme of creative arts workshops run by artists. The theme this year is the ‘Imagined Landscape’ and the captivating and thought-provoking exhibits on show explore the ways that landscape is understood and imagined, both individually and on a collective level. Through the work audiences are invited to consider the landscapes they experience, to explore shared and individual imaginings and to respond to these as witnesses and collaborators. 14

The exhibition includes work made in collaboration with international photographer Barry Cawston, sculptor Tina Brown, painter Ben Bishop, video artist Giles Webberley and portrait painter William Oxer. Louise Copping, Expressions Artist and Curator, said: "As an artist collective we are thrilled to be able to present exciting new work this year. We have been collaborating with other artists to develop works that considers changed and changing landscape, both internally and externally. The works this year explore nature, geology and the climate emergency as well as human connection and our inner experiences of the land and landscape through time.” Emma Grant, long term Artist collaborator, said: “In our work we have been striving to find the uncanny in the everyday, to challenge the status quo and to imagine a new world through art making. With the group show we are advocating for collective, cross-disciplinary collaboration in pursuit of togetherness and equality as a way of life.” Artist Ben Bishop added: “I feel excited to have my work exhibited at such and illustrious show. And more than that, I feel proud to be associated with such meaningful impacts as those made by Expressions Art studios.

Artist William Oxer said: "Producing portraits offers a connection to self, perception and image. The portraits produced in these workshops will present positive experiences aimed at reducing stigma about mental health within communities and normalising mental health through the expression of self in art." Sculptor Tina Brown said: "It has been a pleasure and a fulfilling experience working with the artists at Milestones, in the run up to Expressions 2022. I have been running some collaborative workshops, where the artists shared ideas and experiences, based on the last two years, and a vision of freedom for the future - expressed through abstract sculptural forms, dyed fabric, wire and wood veneer that will be displayed at the Imagined Landscapes Exhibition." As part of the celebration there will also be a fantastic line up of Bristol bands running day and night over the weekend, as well as spoken word and performance, creative workshops, stalls and refreshments. The free event is produced and curated with Milestones Trust, a Bristol charity supporting adults living with mental health needs and learning disabilities.

The focus for Expressions has always been to make the arts accessible, interactive and a source of wellbeing. The people supported by the charity are involved in every aspect of Expressions, from creating the art to organising the show, giving participants invaluable access to the art world and help to get their art work exhibition-ready. The exhibition is free to enter, though donations are welcome.

Three big changes in July and August you need to know about Universal Credit National Insurance

Households on Universal Credit will want to make a note of these important dates in July and August.

No need to worry about worry filling out an application form because this payment is automatic.

During these two months, a few big money changes will be taking place including the first instalment of the cost of living payments.

However, if you’re claiming tax credits you’ll have to wait longer to receive your first payment.

These changes will include Universal Credit, National Insurance and benefits.

National Insurance On 6 July, there was a new change to National Insurance.

We have condensed the changes down for you so you can easily keep track of the dates.

The threshold will rise meaning you have to earn £12,570 rather than £9,000 before you First £650 cost of living payment start paying National Insurance Contributions Eight million households in the UK will receive (NICs). their first £650 cost of living payment. You can find out exactly how much less You’ll receive a £326 payment between 14 NICs you’ll pay by using the Government’s July and the end of the month. calculator. In order to claim the benefit you must receive Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income support and pension credit. You must also have a successful claim or receive them by 25 May 2022 to receive the £326.

20

This could mean you’ll be paying less and have more money to spend in your pocket. For example, someone who earns £20,000 a year will pay around £291 less a year - and this could have an effect on your Universal Credit payments.

Switch from benefits If you claim legacy benefits then you could move to Universal Credit as the Government has resumed its plan to switch people over to the new-style benefit. This is known as “managed migration”. This programme was paused during the Covid-19 pandemic, however it has resumed again as of May this year. Households who still claim benefits that are being “phased out” will be transferred to Universal Credit.

You then have to apply to Universal Credit by a deadline, which is usually within three months. Be warned if you miss the deadline, your benefits could be delayed or stopped altogether. Bank holiday changes in August During the August bank holiday, your Universal Credit payment could be affected as it may be paid out early. Other benefits including state pension and child benefit could also be affected.

The Government is aiming for this to be complete by the end of 2024.

Universal Credit is paid once a month directly to your bank, building society or credit union account.

If you have a change of circumstances like moving house or giving birth, you may have already been moved to Universal Credit.

However, if that payment date falls on a bank holiday, it’s usually paid the working day before.

You can also elect to move over - but be warned you may not be better off.

There’s nothing you can do about the change as the payment is automatic.

If not, you’ll be invited over to switch to Universal Credit and you’ll later receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

We hope this helps you understand the changes that are coming.

Has your property gone up in price?

WHY TENANTS ARE LIKE APPLES, AND HOW TO PICK A GOOD ONE!

Psychologists tell us that the first emotional bond that we develop is trust. This begins at birth, as we seek out patterns of consistency to help us understand and interpret our new world. This is more than an attempt to find comfort and familiarity, it is a deep-rooted survival mechanism. Trust shapes our earliest relationships, from a basic level and it is from these formative years, with these nascent bonds, that we learn how to use trust to survive. But how do we gauge whether we like and trust someone if we only have a very short period of time in which to do so and, further, if we are to judge someone by their actions, then how are we to do this when we haven’t met them before? The answer here is to hothouse, by creating a situation where you can gauge responses to different circumstances. Let’s look at what I mean by this, in the context of a viewing: The first question to ask yourself is:” do I like this person?” Not “are they nice?” These two questions are subtly different, think about this for a second. When you take the time to ask yourself whether you genuinely like someone, you are engaging all your senses, including your gut instinct – which is a powerful internal warning system – ignore it at your peril! 22

Another important question is, are they courteous? When you treat them with courtesy and invite them to do likewise, do they oblige? Create ways for them to demonstrate this. If you go to walk through a door, will they gesture for you to go first? If you leave your shoes at the front door, do they follow suit? If you drop some paperwork, will they instinctively go to pick it up for you? If you have other ways of gauging whether someone is courteous, then think of a way that you can incorporate this into a viewing situation,

How do they treat everyone? This is important, because sometimes people will treat those that they consider to be decision makers (such as you at a viewing) in a preferential manner. What you want to see, is how they treat everybody. I want to see how they treat me, my team, and other housemates. We do this by creating touchpoints. Our tenant candidates will have communicated with different team members before they even get to a viewing and our team members will make notes accordingly. Once at the viewing, they will meet a member of our lettings team and, as often as possible, they will also meet any housemates in situ.

You can often see a demonstrable change in voice tone, behaviour and body language, the moment the housemates appear, and it always makes me smile. Body language. It is fair to expect that someone might be nervous at a viewing – but know the difference between nervous and “shifty” because the latter could mean that you are being lied to: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Do they struggle to make good eye contact? What is their body posture like? Do they repeat words or phrases repeatedly (like they have a prepared script)? Do they provide too much information? Do they touch or cover their mouth? Do they touch or cover their throat (often signs that a topic has touched a nerve)? Do they shuffle their feet or find it hard to stand still? Do they answer questions by contradicting themselves? Do they appear defensive Has the tone in their voice changed (we tend to talk in a higher pitch when we lie)? Do they avoid the use of the word “I”? Do they fiddle with their hair, their watch, other?

I like to get “off topic.” I will show the prospective tenant around the property, give them all the information they need, sell them on the benefits of the property and us as an agency, set our stall out as to how we will treat them and what we will expect in return, explain the referencing procedure, the contract process etc., and answer all and any questions that they might have. However, in between this process, I will sandwich some off topic questions. Simple questions, which do not take a lot of thinking about. I do this for 3 reasons: (a) to put them at ease (b) to find out what they are really like beyond a script (it’s amazing what people will tell you about themselves if you only listen) and (c) to get a baseline for all of the above, to judge the answers and reactions to my questions. If you only have 20-30 minutes in which to form an opinion, make them count. Think of all the pointers you use, in your daily life to judge courtesy, authenticity and whether you get a positive sense of someone and then add them to my suggestions above, yours may be different to mine, but you get the idea. In the same way that it only takes one bad apple to ruin a bunch, it is the same with tenants and a happy household can become an unharmonious one in a heartbeat – make sure that you use your ears and yours eyes twice as much as your mouth at a viewing – we learn when we look and listen! 23

National Teddy Bear Picnic Day Teddy Bear Picnic Day is observed on July 10 of every year. On the day, take your kids along with their teddy bears for a picnic. This day is majorly celebrated by the people of the United States, Canada, Australia, and few parts of Europe. These stuffed toys are always the kid’s favourite companion, so grab this day as a chance to go out for a picnic with your children and their stuffed partner. Teddy bears play an essential part in kids life as they are always together, sometimes even when they grow up to adults. Pack your lunch, seize some teddy bears and your kids, go to park, beach, forest or lake, find a shady place to spend some time with them. It is believed that Teddy Bear Picnic Day was created on July 10 of 1988 by Royal Selangor, after a song about Teddy Bears Picnic became popular. Soon many people started to buy and gift them for birthdays and other occasions. The theme became popular among the kids, schools, parents, etc. The exact reason for the creation of the day remains unknown. What Teddy bears itself was invented after

24

President Theodore Roosevelt failed to hunt a small bear in 1902, which was later made into a cartoon, then a toy store owner, Morris and Rose Michtom, gained permission from the president to name their stuffed toy as teddy bears. Soon teddy bears became most popular among the people. How to celebrate the day Celebrate Teddy Bear Picnic Day by taking your teddy bears out for a picnic. If you can’t find time to go out, you can observe the day at your home with your kids and the teddy bears, by letting them play with it inside a built tent and you can also serve lunch to them in the tent. You can spend some time cleaning and changing clothes for your teddy bears. If you have wanted to buy a teddy bear, then today is the right day to shop for them. Make sure you celebrate the day with a picnic and a packed lunch. You can also buy teddy bearshaped foods for the trip. Go creative with your teddy bears; the point is that this day will give you some time to spend with kids and loved ones. Post pictures and share your Teddy Bear Picnic Day celebrations on social media by using the hashtag #TeddyBearPicnicDay.

Jos and Andrew report on: Portway travel consultation: Full Council update:

Unsightly hoardings on Bath Road:

Tuesday evening is Full Council, with questions, statements, petitions and lively debate on the agenda! We have submitted questions on the dilapidated state of Sparke Evans Park Bridge, Bristol’s new tree strategy, protecting our green spaces and active travel infrastructure in Brislington. We also have a statement on the lack of action on public EV recharging infrastructure. Jos will be making a speech on the petition against the proposal to site a new 5G mast in the middle of Redcatch Park, an welcome precedent, and Andrew will be making a speech on the cost of living crisis. You can watch all the action on the council’s own You tube channel: https://youtube.com/c/ BristolCityCouncilLive

Just to update you on the hoardings at the construction site on Bath Road opposite Arnos Vale Cemetery. We were in contact with the developers and they have agreed a plan to remove all of the timber advertising and replace with solid Heras fencing. They are looking to undertake the work within 2 weeks.

BS4 Good Gardens 2022:

Portway travel consultation:

Judging has now started on this year’s BS4 Good Gardens Awards. As usual, Andrew will be helping with the judging. Good luck if you are participating and thank you to the organisers for all their hard work.

Yet another consultation on travel in the city. Hopefully, one day, we might see some action! People who live or travel along the A4 Portway are being encouraged to give their views on improvements to this route into the city.

26

Community litter pick: Our next litter pick will be Saturday, 30 July. We are meeting at the bottom of Sand Hill by the junction of Bloomfield and Whitby Roads at 10am. As usual, we will provide litter pickers, hi-viz and bags, please bring your own gloves and hand sanitizer

An early engagement exercise is seeking to gather feedback on how buses can move more quickly through traffic, and cycling and walking can be safer and more enjoyable. The scope of the A4 Portway project starts at the M5 flyover, it travels along the A4 passing the Avon Gorge and onto Hotwell Road to the Jacob’s Wells Road roundabout, then along Anchor Road, and up to Explore Lane. The project is part of a wider transformation by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority over the next decade to make Bristol’s transport network better for all. Views can be given through an online survey and via an interactive map, which allows participants to add comments about specific locations on the route and read what other people have said.

The engagement closes on Wednesday 17 August 2022. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. You can register using this link: http://www.bristollibdems.org/efocus. Bristol Clean Air Zone is Coming Are You Ready?

“We’ve received over 3,800 applications for financial support. Our advisors have processed most of the applications from our priority groups. Our finance partners will be contacting eligible applicants from August to guide them through the next stage of the process by putting them in touch with approved dealerships.”

It’s confirmed that the city’s Clean Air Zone will start operating on Monday 28 November (2022). However there is still time to apply for financial support to replace vehicles that don’t meet the zone’s emission standards.

Two thirds of vehicles are already able to travel in the zone free of charge, but we know some people need a bit longer to make adaptations. There is an exemption available until July 2023 for those that are successful in applying for financial support and have yet to receive their new vehicle.

Mayor Rees said: “This is a major milestone on our journey to clean air. We have now agreed a launch date for the zone with government ministers and officials at the Joint Air Quality Unit. On Monday 28 November Bristol will introduce one of the most far-reaching zones in the UK. Poor air quality has a major impact on the health of everyone in the city and the Clean Air Zone will help us tackle this issue and meet government targets for cleaner air in 2023. “Most drivers on Bristol roads won’t need to pay the daily charge but if you do then you may be eligible for financial support to upgrade your vehicle. It’s easy to check if your vehicle will be charged with the government’s Clean Air Zone checker tool.”

In addition, we’ve asked Government to extend other temporary exemptions from the charge which will be available to: • • • •

Residents in the zone People working within the zone and earning less than £27,000 a year Blue Badge holders Patients attending hospitals in the zone

Applications for these temporary exemptions will open this September.

New Chapter for Thousands of Young South Glos Readers All pupils in Reception and Year one at South Gloucestershire primary schools will be given their own library card this month as part of a drive to encourage youngsters across the district to read more for pleasure, as well as accessing wider library facilities and leisure centres. The aim of the programme, agreed as part of this year’s council budget at a cost of £40,000 per year, is to help support the council priority of giving every child the best start in life. The library cards will be rolled out over the next four years, with all pupils in Year 6 receiving their own cards in the autumn term to help ensure that momentum and interest in reading is carried into the secondary phase. Over the next four years every child at primary school will have received a card, unlocking a host of learning and leisure opportunities with 7,000 children receiving cards each year. This year, pupils in Reception and Years 1 and 6, around 10,000 children, will receive their cards. In each of the next three years they will be provided to all pupils in Reception and Year 6 classes. Library access will give children instant opportunities to borrow books free of charge. In addition, children’s library cards can also be used at any of the South Gloucestershire Active Lifestyle Centres as well, which will help support their wider physical and mental health and wellbeing.

The Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Councillor Sanjay Shambhu and Cabinet Members for Schools and Communities respectively, Councillors Erica Williams and Rachael Hunt, joined pupils and staff from Emersons Green Primary School at Emersons Green Library this week to celebrate the new scheme and explore all the opportunities on offer at the library. Councillor Hunt said: “This is an important four-year investment by the council in the development of every child in South Gloucestershire. We believe it will have an impact in increasing the levels of literacy for children, as well as encouraging a love of reading. It will work alongside other initiatives that the Council is supporting through its Recovery and Innovation fund. “We know that for so many families using a library can unlock new worlds to enjoy, bringing confidence and educational benefits. By helping to open the door to all children and their families, we hope that every child in South Gloucestershire will visit their library and discover a huge range of books as well as the activities that are taking place during the summer holidays as part of the Summer Reading Challenge”. Head teacher of Emersons Green Primary School, Karl Hemmings said “This is an exciting initiative by South Gloucestershire Library service. As a school we know how important reading for pleasure is for our children. This link between the school and the library service will have a major benefit to every child in this school.”

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? Ahead of the Wimbledon finals this weekend, North Somerset residents who fancy themselves as the next Cameron Norrie or Emma Raducanu are being reminded of the public tennis courts at Ashcombe Park in Weston-super-Mare. The three tennis courts were reopened in March 2021 following refurbishment thanks to an £85,000 project fund, secured by North Somerset Council from Sport England and the Lawn Tennis Association. The project included resurfacing of the courts and installing new secure fencing with an automated gate access system. When users book online they are provided with an access code for the keypad on the entry gate. The courts are currently open between 7am and 9pm (last one hour slot starts at 8pm) every day. When booking there are two payment options:

The money from bookings and annual memberships pay for the regular maintenance of the courts with any surplus funding put towards improving Ashcombe Park. Tennis courts are also available in other locations across North Somerset, including: Salthouse Fields Tennis Courts in Clevedon – three courts available free of charge on a ‘turn up and play’ basis. Portishead Lawn Tennis Club – opened two newly built courts last week (Sunday 3 July), so they now have five courts. Public ‘Pay and Play’ courts are available to book here. Hutton Moor Leisure Centre – three floodlit tennis courts can be booked by both members and non-members in person, by calling 01934 425900 or through the centre’s website here. The hire cost for non-members starts at £7.40 per court per hour.

1. Pay and Play – £6 for an hour on court, with each session bookable for a maximum of Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset two hours. Council's executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, said: "It’s 2. Annual membership – £35 allowing anyone great to see that people have been using the in a household to book the courts for a year courts at Ashcombe Park and there’s clearly at no additional cost. a demand for this type of facility. To book a court at Ashcombe Park click here Since launching, over 4,000 bookings have been made and more than 260 annual memberships taken up.

“We're planning to replace the successful tennis community coach position, which is currently vacant, to provide sessions for schools, community groups and to generally get people interested in tennis through community engagement. “I’m delighted to see the two new courts open at Portishead Lawn Tennis Club, providing additional facilities for people living in the north of the area.”

A City Walk Through Leigh Woods Walk in a nutshell A tour around some of the south-west’s most beautiful and historic woodland, including an array of rare plant and animal life and stunning views of the Avon Gorge, the Clifton suspension bridge and Bristol itself. The route is not too hilly, and there are some alternative surfaced routes for buggies and wheelchairs, but forest terrain can be uneven, and it is fairly easy to get lost (although not for long). Be aware, too, that some of these trails are also used by cyclists.

Why it’s special Even before Brunel’s great memorial, the Clifton suspension bridge, made it easy to cross Avon Gorge, Bristolians had been escaping to Leigh Woods for centuries. The peace and beauty to be found among the trees here is the best possible antidote to city life, while the flora and fauna, the iron age hillfort at Stokeleigh Camp, and even the bridge itself create many points of interest.

Directions 1 From the car park follow the waymarkers for the red and blue routes downhill. The red trail turns off right at the foot of the slope; keep to the blue trail, passing a house on your left. 2 Carry on along the track, and when Sustrans cycle route 41 goes right, continue straight ahead to Paradise Bottom. Follow the gravel path past a pond to a small car park. 3 Follow the path behind the information board, heading downhill through the old arboretum towards another pond. Go around the pond, climbing back uphill. Go through a gate then turn left back on to the main track you came along. After 300m turn left down Sustrans route 41. Head downhill towards the river Avon until you reach the cycle path beside the river. 4 Turn right and follow the path upstream. After half a mile you’ll see Clifton suspension bridge. Turn right through the arch under the railway 180m before the bridge and follow Nightingale Valley up the North Road entrance to Leigh Woods. 5 Take the left entrance from the road back into the wood and follow the blue trail up to Valley Road. Turn right on Valley Road and head towards the National Trust office. Follow the Sustrans trail past the left end of the office to a stone wall. Keep the wall on your left and leave the blue Sustrans path. Walk on until you reach the purple trail marker post 18.

With a natural play area near the National Trust office, equipped with swings, balance beams and climbing logs, it is also an excellent place to bring children.

34

6 Follow the purple waymarked trail through the wall and carry on until you reach the copper beeches of Coronation Avenue at post 21. Turn left to get back to the main road and the bus stop or turn right and follow the road back to the car park.

Bristolian Cultural Exchange Centre Founder Celebrates his First Year in the Ecuadorian Andes Bristolian Cultural Exchange Centre Founder Celebrates his First Year in the Ecuadorian Andes Joshua Holmes, founder of the Cultural Exchange Centre ‘El Terreno’ in Ecuador, is celebrating one year since engaging with the local community. The former youth worker (CYN, Knowle West Media Centre & Basement Studio) from Cotham moved to Ecuador in 2017 with a vision of a centre where people could grow and ecosystems could regenerate through the use of cultural exchange. After several years of searching he settled on a small village outside the town of Guaranda, known for its indigenous culture, spectacular landscapes, carnival celebrations and artisanal cheeses. In an area where 40% of the rural population live in poverty, he has attracted over 80 volunteers from around the world to help build the cultural exchange centre and deliver over 100 community workshops and activities to the local population. 36

This year he hopes to complete construction of the cultural centre, begin the permaculture gardens, grow the volunteer/ internship programmes and begin installing smokeless stoves for the local community. “It’s been an amazing first year here building El Terreno. The community of Atandahua has received us with open arms and we’ve had a huge range of skilled volunteers put their passion into making a difference. I’m excited for what next year holds!” - Joshua Holmes For those interested to get involved, El Terreno has year-round volunteering opportunities and has just launched a vital fundraising campaign to help cover the ongoing volunteer and community activity expenses. TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL HOUSE PAINTING

There is more to house painting than just slapping up a coat of paint. The job can be messy, amateurish if the homeowner is in a rush or impeccable and of professional quality if he or she will follow a few tricks of the trade. This is not a task to hurry through or it will have to be done over again sooner rather than later. Without proper attention, the new coat can flake off in big disappointing peels. Unsuccessful painting can mean that the entire task will have to be done over again or that it will look like a sloppy eyesore for years to come. Here are some tips for the best results: Tools of the trade: Pros take great pride in their tools and for good reason. Having high quality paintbrushes, ladders, stirring stick and rollers will allow a superior result more easily. Inferior quality paintbrushes may seem like a bargain at the cash register but once the painting begins, it may become a different story. Shedding brush-hairs left in the path of the shoddy paintbrush will be a pain to pick out of the newly applied layer. Those crummy brushes will shed more than a dog in the middle of summer. Without a retractable ladder, a homeowner will have a hard time reaching various spots. after the can has set for a while. And rollers, like paintbrushes, must be of high quality for proper absorption and distribution.

38

Hauling out a kitchen chair to climb up on will result in slops and streaks on the unsuspecting furniture. Stir sticks are a must or the colors won’t be mixed properly Preparation: If the surface is dirty and peeling, it must be cleaned and sanded before a new coat of latex or enamel is applied. Paints don’t stick to dirt and instead of a quick cover-up job, there may be layers of wet muck that fall off before a painter knows it. Flakes peeling underneath will cause a new layer to peel away as well. Prep isn’t something to skimp on if a topnotch result is desired. Taping around windows and woodwork is also crucial in order to keep them neat and spot-free. Color choice: Choosing the color will take a bit of time. It’s not as easy as it may seem. There are zillions of shades of a hue as simple as white. Taking swatches and samples home from the store will be an important step. Looking at tones next to existing furnishings, lighting and woodwork will help with selection. Once a hue has been settled upon, painting a sample area and living with it for a few days will be a good idea. This will allow a homeowner to see what it looks like at various times of the day and in certain lighting. When a homeowner decides to do some house painting, he or she must take the time to do it right. Proper tools , preparation and color choice will be steps on the path to enhanced curb appeal. The interior and exterior of a house can be greatly improved upon with a product as seemingly simple as a can of paint.

Local Crematorium invites community to join 30th anniversary event

Westerleigh Cemetery & Crematorium, near Bristol, is marking 30 years of serving its local community by issuing an open invitation for people to visit on Saturday 23 July. The crematorium is hosting a Community Open Day between 10.30am and 12.30pm to commemorate three decades and are hoping lots of local people will want to join in. Visitors will be able to meet the crematorium’s friendly staff and find out more about the exceptional care they provide. There will be guided tours of the crematorium taking place every 30 minutes (the last tour starts at 12.30pm) and people will be able to ask any questions they have. Light refreshments will be available at the Willow Tree Café and visitors will also be able to see the 30th anniversary memorial tree which has been planted to mark three decades of service.

42

There are also plans to bury a time capsule on site to mark the 30th anniversary and visitors to the open day on 23 July are being invited to bring with them any item(s) they feel might be suitable to be included in the capsule. Shaun Chapman-Young, site manager at Westerleigh Cemetery & Crematorium, said: “We pride ourselves on having very close links with our local community, which is why we wanted to have an open day in order to commemorate our 30th anniversary with people who live in the surrounding area. “We are hoping lots of people will come and visit our peaceful and tranquil grounds, and we would love it if they would like to get actively involved in our anniversary by bringing with them something we can put into our time capsule. “They could be items which reflect 2022, which the future generation can open in 30 years’ time and reflect on, or perhaps they could be items which also look back to 1992, when Westerleigh Crematorium first opened.

“The open day is free to attend, and no booking is required. We are really looking forward to meeting lots of local people on the day.”

Shaun said: “During the past three decades, Westerleigh Crematorium has proudly become a major part of the local community.

Westerleigh Cemetery & Crematorium, which opened in 1992, is now home to the national headquarters for Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner and operator of crematoria and cemeteries, with 37 sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide pleasant, peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

“Firstly, of course, we have always strived to deliver the highest possible standards of service, providing exceptional care in a beautiful setting, so that families can remember, mourn and celebrate the lives of their loved ones in a way that is uniquely personal.

Local developer Ian Pratt formed a consortium which successfully responded to an advertisement in the summer 1990 edition of Resurgam, the quarterly journal of the Federation of British Cremation Authorities, which set out a brief for a new crematorium to be built on a 22-acre site owned by Northavon District Council. That consortium became Cremation Management Limited and Westerleigh Crematorium opened on 27 August 1992. This also provided a foundation to what later became Westerleigh Group.

“In addition to the care and support we have given to so many local families, we have also helped many local charities and organisations, through financial donations, fundraising events and other support. “People are at the heart of everything we do, from employing the right people to provide the level of care we pride ourselves on to building strong relationships with our local Funeral Directors and business partners, and our local communities.” For further details about what is happening on the open day please click here

The decision of appointing a new CEO to lead Jessie May was not an easy one. Tiggy Atkinson, Chair of Trustees, was a key part of the process; “Whilst we are all so sad to see Chris go, he has devotedly led the team for the last 17 years and we wish him well in his retirement.

Children’s hospice at home charity Jessie May are delighted to announce their new CEO will be Daniel Cheesman

We are incredibly excited to welcome Daniel to Jessie May and have him hit the ground running implementing our new strategy over the coming years. During the interview process Daniel brought such passion for the work of our Jessie May nurses, and we look forward to seeing that enthusiasm shine through when he joins us in August.” Daniel will be joining Jessie May in August, closely supported by the entire team and Board of Directors as he settles in his new role.

Daniel joins Jessie May following 3 years at disability charity Paul’s Place, stepping into the role after current CEO, Chris Roys, announced his intentions to retire after 17 years at the helm. Daniel is relishing the opportunity to take on a new challenge; “Jessie May has been providing children and families with vital emotional support, end of life care and bereavement support for over 25 years and the work of the trust is as important now as it has always been. I am excited to be starting as Jessie May’s CEO, taking over from Chris Roys who has faithfully led the charity for 17 years. I am honoured to be joining a committed and passionate team and look forward to working to fulfil the charities strategy over the next few years - supporting more families, through innovative new projects and expanding the geographical reach of the trust.” 46
