How can I help my arthritic pet this winter? As winter approaches and the colder weather sets in, it can often make your pet’s existing aches and pains more uncomfortable, or even highlight that your pet is suffering from arthritis. If your pet has been diagnosed with arthritis, there are many easy treatments available that can make your pet’s life more comfortable such as pain relief medication, joint supplements e.g. glucosamine, acupuncture, physiotherapy and heat therapy (or even buying a heated bed). There are other things you can also do to help with your pet’s arthritis during the chilly winter months:

·

Ensure they have soft, comfortable bedding away from draughts.

·

Protect your pet from cold and wet weather.

·

Help them to avoid slippery surfaces such as tiles and wooden floors.

·

It is generally best to exercise dogs ‘little and often’ rather than one long walk

·

Try to limit the amount of jumping or climbing (e.g. up and down stairs or on to furniture).

Arthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joints and is very common in cats and dogs. In dogs it can display as lameness, stiffness and pain after resting. In cats, the symptoms can be more subtle, such as the reluctance to jump up, less grooming or sleeping more than usual. At our practice we have a popular scheme called the‘Arthritis Club’. Becoming a member can help to provide your arthritic pet with the extra care they need, including discounted rates on pain relief and supplements, free weight checks, annual blood and urine tests and discounts on diagnostics like x-rays or CT Scans. We also have specialist orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation teams that are available if needed. If you suspect your pet may have arthritis or you would like to join our FREE Arthritis Club, call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 9715115.

Recipes for a light Christmas

Sarah our local Slimming World Consultant from Whitchurch says people can enjoy festive food without gaining weight. "A Slimming World Christmas" book is bursting with more than 60 super-slimming Christmas recipes including starters, mains, sides, desserts and more. While Christmas ‘tis the season to be jolly, lots of people find the festive period can leave them feeling far from merry about their weight. And evidence suggests it takes up to three months to lose any weight gained between November and January.* However, Whitchurch Slimming World Consultant Sarah Bryant says there’s no need to give up on Christmas cheer this year because you’re stressed about your weight and, thanks to a delicious, healthy recipe book she’s got lots of tempting and tasty ideas to share. A Slimming World Christmas will show people how to enjoy a super-slimming seasonal spread so they can keep their weight loss on track and look forward to a lighter, brighter new year. It features more than 60 recipes to help slimmer's dish up a very happy – and delicious – Christmas, including traditional festive dishes, Christmas-party platters and great ideas for leftovers.

"Even though Christmas is just one day, we know it has a habit of lasting the whole of December which can bring additional challenges for slimmers. A Slimming World Christmas is also bursting with festive bakes such as Star biscuits and Mince tarts, tempting seasonal tipples to get the party started like Mulled Wine and Lime Spritzers, and clever ways to give leftovers a lift from Quick Christmas curry to Turkey risotto, making it a Christmas cracker of a companion for anyone wanting to manage their weight all December long," adds Sarah. Each of the recipes has been created to work with Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which is based on the science of energy density and satiety meaning slimmers can fill up on healthy, everyday foods that are low in calories yet satisfying. Foods like fruit and veg, pasta and potatoes, lean meat and fish can be enjoyed freely, while slimmers can still have measured portions of the foods other diets forbid – meaning they don’t have to miss out at Christmas or on any occasion! Sarah says: "Paired with the care, friendship and shared ideas that they’ll find at the local Slimming World group, A Slimming World Christmas really will help people to make their festive weight loss wishes come true. Everyone’s welcome at any of our group’s.

Sarah, who runs the Whitchurch Slimming World group, says: "Christmas day is centred around food and sitting down to a satisfying, delicious meal with your loved ones. Slimmers might think that they can’t enjoy turkey with all the trimmings but, as this book shows, by making just a few small changes to the way you prepare and cook your dishes you can enjoy all your festive favourites without gaining pounds." When it comes to catering for the ‘big day’, A Slimming World Christmas includes starters, mains, sides and sweets – think Deluxe prawn cocktail, Roast turkey with Hedgehog potatoes and Braised red cabbage, followed by Cherry Christmas trifles. And the clever book includes a pick ’n’ mix menu which will enable even novice cooks to create a fabulous three-course menu in just 60 minutes – what greater gift could a Christmasday chef ask for?

Don’t be fooled by false ‘bargain gadgets’ this Christmas The Christmas catalogues have come out already, and I’ve noticed a huge number of cheap laptops (under £200) from the likes of Staples and PC World. Unfortunately, I’ve also come across a few customers who’ve bought these bargains and are regretting it. It’s so true in technology that you get what you pay for. So, to avoid regretting your ‘bargain’ just months into the New Year, take a note of these tips to make sure you get a laptop or tablet which will last: 1 – Pay a decent price A laptop that will last you for years to come will cost money. There’s no getting around that. These cheap laptops have Celeron or Atom processors, which are at the budget end of the range. And boy will you know about it! Get something with a Core i3 processor minimum, or i5 if possible.

Total PC Support From Martin 4 – Don’t accept McAfee from the shop If you value your computer, you will not install any McAfee product on it. Some High Street shops will offer it to you, and I can only assume that they are on commission, as no one in their right mind has recommended this for years. Not even John McAfee himself. Install Kaspersky Internet Security or Avast Free instead. Ask Martin at Ship Shape I’m always more than happy to answer any questions on your intended purchases. Just pick up the phone and give me a call. And to see a longer, more detailed version of this article, plus more guides on everything PC and Mac, go to http:// shipshapecomputers.co.uk/guides.

The same goes for RAM (working memory). You really need at least 4GB to get anything done, avoiding that need to throw the laptop out of the window. Avoid those 2GB doorstops. In summary, spend at least £350 on a laptop and you’ll be happy. 2 – Don’t buy a tablet if you need a laptop Many of you will be tempted to junk the laptop and move to the light, portable and cheap tablet. Ask yourself:

 Will the smaller screen of the tablet be big enough?

 Do you need to run a full Office suite (impossible on iOS and Android)?

 Do you often run many programs at once? On tablets this can be a frustrating affair. Even if you buy a Windows tablet, you might not end up with a computer that does all you need. 3 – Don’t buy a Chromebook as your main PC Google’s Chromebooks can look like great value at first sight. But look a little closer and you’ll realize that they are limited compared to a proper laptop. You can’t run Windows software (like Office, Firefox and Photoshop) and the storage is often limited. Plus, if I had a penny for every customer who called me to link their printer to Chromebook, all in vain, then I would have literally dozens of pennies.

The hottest Christmas gift will be legal from January. Great news for owners or those wanting to own a self balancing scooter. Thanks to sources on Instagram who posted a blog these boards will be legalised from January 2016. IOhawk UK a retailer of self balancing boards has placed immense pressure in the courts to legalise these gadgets and has paid off. Even Mayor Boris Johnson has backed the idea as the ultimate future human transportation network. They are banned for now from pavements under a section of the 1835 Highways Act, which says people cannot use the footway to “lead or drive any horse, ass, sheep, mule, swine, or cattle or carriage of any description”. That’s the law for England and Wales. The future of self balancing boards is looking promising and is set to be one of the biggest Christmas gifts on all children's and adults Christmas lists this year.

Councillors Surgery The Bristol Arena; Trains and boats and bikes and buses, but no cars to get you there. I grew up with my older sister playing Elvis and Everly Brothers records through the house (Dad; “Turn that racket DOWN”), then in my turn, it was the Beatles, Rolling Stones and then the Boss – Bruce Springsteen whose ‘Born to Run’ is still one of the best tracks ever. Just before last Christmas, a carload of us drove up to Birmingham to see Queen with Adam Lambert – loved it!. So when a 12,000 seat Bristol Arena was proposed, I was totally on board, and still am. After all, Bristol is by far the largest city in the South West and growing rapidly. Like Nottingham and almost every other city of similar size, Bristol should have an arena large enough to attract the best and biggest acts, from rock to opera stars.

Bikes; In accordance with current transport priorities here in Bristol, people will be encouraged to either walk to the arena from existing car parks like Cabot Circus “only a 20 minute walk away”, or to cycle, sharing the crowded pathways with – the crowd!

Bristol’s Arena is due to be built next to Temple Meads station on “Arena Island” with the main road the A4 Bath Road leading into Brislington. “That makes sense”, I thought, “People can come in by train, cross a bridge and there they are, simple.” But following a presentation at the Greater Brislington Neighbourhood Partnership recently on assumptions being made about travel flows - how people will get to the Arena and then back home, I and most people attending have concerns.

Buses; There will be a coach park and turning area just off cattle Market Road for up to 50 coaches. Sensible. But why not use the Brislington Park and Ride for these late – night events? It closes early evening, but surely it is not beyond the brief of highways and transport planners to negotiate and liaise with FirstBus for a shuttle service up and down the A4.

Boats; One man at the meeting has an idea worth investigating; use the Ashton Park and Ride car park and ferry people using the existing ferry services through the docks, along Harbourside coming in from that side of town to the Arena; similar to the O2 arrangements in London. It does not seem that this idea had crossed the collective mind of the planners; nice one!

Cars; although next to the station, many people will still come by car, as we did to see Queen; it is cheaper, more convenient and people like to travel to events like this together. There will be no public car parking at the Arena. Only a few spaces for VIPs (artistes) and some Disabled parking will be provided. The Disabled Parking was estimated as totally insufficient by a man in a wheelchair at the meeting. None for average people like you and me. Nor, as one parent pointed out, for young people being dropped off to see ‘One Direction’, ‘Little Mix’ or similar with their friends and to be collected by their parents as happens frequently nowadays. Trains: Local people KNOW Bristol Temple Meads station in detail; many have worked there. Several pointed out that if special trains for big events come into Platform 12, you don’t even need a bridge across – it is on a level with the land opposite. Others know that there is a tunnel under the station that could be extended easily from other platforms. But no, the traffic planners are planning that these big crowds come down the ramp, along the Bath road and curve into the Arena. As several locals said “it makes no sense”. The Bath Road is very busy every evening, how will it cope with all this?

As your Brislington West Councillor, I am following developments with interest. The people at the Neighbourhood Partnership made some very sensible suggestions to “the experts”. I hope they are followed up. I Wish you all a Happy Christmas. Eileen Means Labour Councillor Brislington West Email: eileenmeans@bristol.gov.uk

Jellyfish and Barbershoppers invade Bournemouth! The invasion of jellyfish onto Bournemouth beaches this summer extended into the Bournemouth International Centre on the last weekend of October. The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) held their annual convention there, with a theme of By the Seaside. Pictured are several ladies from Bristol Fashion, who made quite a spectacle in their jellyfish garb. A larger shoal , which had drifted in from Lancashire was spotted in the auditorium. This annual Get together is an opportunity for Barbershoppers from near and far to share their wonderful hobby, to hear some of the best music of the genre and to engage in friendly competition. Some of the guests we enjoyed hearing were Lemon Squezy, four young men from Sweden, and our gold medal winning 'Brother' chorus The Great Western Chorus, of which Craig, our Musical Director, is a member. The highlight of the weekend was the competition, when we regained a place in the top ten of 32 choruses competing, with a score of 71.1% with our renditions of Some Enchanted Evening and What Kind of Fool Am I? This was the level of result we had hoped for and worked towards for 6 months. This year two members sang with us on the Convention stage for the first time, while several received 20, 25 and 30 year long service awards. We are proud of the appropriately named 'Obsession' who represented us in the quartet semi finals. So now it's back to brush up our Christmas repertoire and to prepare for competing in the Naisea Music Festival on November 21st. We rehearse every Thursday evening at Four Acres School in Withywood; we would welcome a visit from you if you sing and would like to know more about us and barbershop singing. Contact details are on our website www.bristol-fashion.org.uk

Stay well this winter Winter is here and this is a time when some people in our community are at particular risk. This article describes what the elderly, frail, those with chronic illnesses and respiratory diseases should do to stay safe and healthy as temperatures fall and the climate worsens. Winter can be seriously bad for your health, and a challenging time for the NHS and emergency care services. The Stay Well This Winter Campaign is a joint national initiative from NHS England to help people stay well and stop those who are most vulnerable falling ill and needing hospital treatment Get a Flu Vaccination Let’s be crystal clear Flu Kills! It can be dangerous and fatal to at risk groups and this message is clear. This year Pharmacies across the nation have been deployed in addition to GP practices to vaccinate at risk groups free of charge. This has resulted in a huge take-up as quite often no appointment is necessary and the whole process is quick and informal. If you have not had your flu jab and would like one please call Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446 for a chat to discuss if you can have it for free. Eligible people need to be aged 65 or over or have one of the following conditions: have asthma, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, weakened immune system, lung or kidney disease or you are pregnant or an informal carer. The criteria are quite broad and this is because the NHS wants as many people as possible to be vaccinated to reduce the impact a possible flu epidemic would have on hospital services. Seek Help from Your Pharmacist At the first sign of common winter ailments eg, cold, sore throat and coughs, see your community pharmacist for over the counter remedies instead of immediately booking a doctor’s appointment.

This conserves valuable resources and quite often you will be able to buy better quality products from the pharmacy than what you might receive on prescription for less serious conditions. Remember the community pharmacy is your first port of call this winter. If you need advice or have any questions or symptoms that concern you, feel free to call Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446. Keeping Warm at Home We know this can be an expensive time of year and heating bills are never cheap. Wrapping up warm and wearing several layers trap air in clothing and act as effective insulation. Using a hot water bottle and taking one to bed at night and ensuring windows and doors are closed fully and draughts are eliminated also work. Grants for home insulation and a new boiler or repairs to your existing one are available from your local authority. It is recommended that homes are heated to at least 18°C or 65°F to offset health risks when it is cold outside. Being warm prevents the common cold and flu and more serious symptoms such as heart attacks, pneumonia and strokes. Eating Well: food gives us energy that we burn to keep warm also. Regular hot meals and drinks throughout the day help achieve this. Keeping the Medicine Cupboard Well Stocked Items such as paracetamol, cold and flu remedies, cough mixtures, sore throat pastilles, bandages and plasters and a thermometer is wise so you don’t need to go out if the weather is bad. Check with your pharmacy if you take other medications to ensure your cold & Flu remedies are safe for instance people with high blood pressure and heart conditions can’t take decongestants and other people might be allergic to anything that contains ibuprofen. Children frequently get sick as their immune system develops and symptoms that appear normal may mask a more serious underlying condition. Phone Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446 if you need help with any of these.

Getting all Prescriptions Filled in Advance Ordering Repeat Prescriptions early to allow for Christmas Closures and very busy schedules in the run up to holidays makes sense. If the weather is foul this only worsens the pressure on already stretched courier networks that can lead to delays in deliveries of medications. It is good practice to keep stock of your medications and order in ample time rather than leaving it to the last minute and getting stressed. Pain can be noticeably worse in cold weather and cold air makes the lungs tighter and worsen asthma and breathing difficulties. From Chilblains to Chest infections a wide range of conditions can be exacerbated so stock up wisely. Certain medications may at times be difficult to obtain. Issues affecting availability need to be sorted in advance so it is better to be ahead of the game than leave it until the last minute! Call Hengrove Pharmacy if You need help ordering and collecting your meds on 0117 300 5446. Take all Medicines as Intended Check if your medications need to be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Christmas is for most a time of overindulgence after all and it is important to know if you need to avoid alcohol or certain foods. Also if you are on antibiotics then you need to complete the course if you begin taking them on consecutive days and these might have strict dietary requirements. Pain killers may react with alcohol to increase sedation and affect your ability to drive. If you are unsure check with Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446.

Prolonged periods of inactivity might be signs that something is wrong. Phone the GP, Age UK or Social Services if you have any concerns. It’s also critical we do what we can to help others stay well. The elderly compose the largest group admitted to hospital in the winter. Half live alone and one third never or only occasionally socialise with family or friends. They, as a result are slow to seek help, and once ill often get too unwell. This is a golden opportunity for us to look out for our neighbours and ensure they get any help they need. Research shows that people aren’t seeking advice for their symptoms early enough because they feel they should just ride them out, are embarrassed or regard them as trivial. Seeking advice from the Pharmacy at the first sign of common winter ailments is the first step. Pharmacies welcome your questions and freely dispense advice and you are not obliged to make a purchase. A good balanced diet and healthy lifestyle and wrapping warm can avoid many risks. Remember: Your Pharmacist also Dispenses Free Advice. Call Hengrove Pharmacy if we can be of service to You and Your Family on 0117 300 5446.

Keep an Eye on Older People and Frail Neighbours, Friends and Relatives Being a good neighbour and community minded means being vigilant and attentive to the needs of others. These people are amongst the most vulnerable in society. Watch for signs of activity such as curtains being drawn, mail or milk being collected and vehicles being moved.
