SHIREHAMPTON PUBLIC HALL NEWSLETTER Welcome to the Shirehampton Public Hall April newsletter! First of all many thanks to those of you who attended or took part in our Open Day in February. It was a tremendous success, with a good turnout of people enjoying the stalls, refreshments and wonderful displays by the Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Dance/Movement classes which are run regularly at the Hall. The Trustees would especially like to thank Janet Thomas, retiring Treasurer at the Public Hall, for her tremendous efforts in coordinating the events of the day and organising all the publicity. Janet’s efforts were supported by the other Trustees and members of the Hall, as well as Julian Mellor, author of the recent feasibility study at the Hall.

At breakfast this morning, a woman said to her husband: “My memory is getting really poor, I went upstairs yesterday to get something and by the time I got to the top of the stairs I had forgotten what I was going for.” The husband said: “How bad is your memory?” She responded: “Sorry, what were we talking about?” Old jokes are always the best, but early signs of a loss of memory are an uncomfortable reminder of the aging process and certainly no joke. Some of us will inevitably get dementia or other debilitating conditions that could result in the loss of mental capacity. Do you know you what happens if you or your partner becomes unable to make decisions for themselves due to old-age memory issues or dementia? Potentially you can find yourself in a position where you cannot pay for services or make decisions, without lawyers and something called the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) being involved. It’s an expensive and long-winded process. That is, unless you have written a legal document called a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in advance of your loss of mental capacity.

The Citizens Advice Bureau website says: “You should make an LPA if you have been diagnosed with, or think you might develop, an illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself at some time in the future. “The kinds of illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself include:      

dementia mental health problems brain injury alcohol or drug misuse the side-effects of medical treatment any other illness or disability.

“You must make an LPA whilst you are still capable of making decisions for yourself. This is called having mental capacity” At Legally Secure, we are experts in writing Lasting Powers of Attorney and talking you through the pitfalls. Whilst no one wants to think about the potential of problems in later life, writing an LPA could save you and your family considerable cost and grief in the not too distant future.

THE WORD ON THE STREET Let’s Keep Bristol at the Top By Eileen Means The Sunday Times has announced, presumably after a great deal of research, that Bristol is the best place to live in the UK. This is great for Bristol and great for the tourism and hospitality industry. It has also been announced that it is the best place to spend a weekend. The stag and hen parties who throng the city centre every weekend didn’t need telling – they clearly have such a good time here. Bristol is also in the top 10 cities of the world. So, terrific for visitors, but a lot of locals were quick to get on social media like Facebook and Twitter to burst the bubble. The first and most strongly felt issue was the rising cost of accommodation, largely blamed on Londoners resettling here and “gentrification” of previously run down areas like St Pauls or dear old ‘Bemmy’ - Bedminster. Whether trying to buy or to rent, Bristol’s housing market is rising faster than London. The second issue is getting around the city, either by car or public transport. As reported on this page previously, getting around this city is a nightmare and getting worse in terms of gridlock during more and more times of the day. But perhaps this is where an influx of Londoners can help us locally get back on track. Londoners are used to an efficient transport system, with good, very regular bus and train services. Oyster cards have simplified access on and off, reduced delays and speeded up routes for years now. Transport for London have invested in fuel efficient, low polluting buses, not at all like the smelly passed-down diesel buses that we Bristolians have to put up with. It is no coincidence that traffic pollution in Bristol has shot up over recent years; it is also no coincidence that the Metro Mayor candidates for the election on 4th May are all saying that they will introduce cleaner air. A quick way would be to introduce a clean air zone in our city centre, banning lorries and buses that pollute so heavily – but I’ll believe this when I see it! Of course, we keep being told that MetroBus will sort out our public transport, but do you think it will keep Bristol at the top of the list? Unless these two key city problems are addressed by the ‘Powers that Be’ Bristol is likely to lose its crown.

Easter at St Mary’s This is a special time in the church year as we move through Lent towards Easter. It is a time of reflection on our own lives, a time of remembering all that Jesus went through for us and his suffering on the cross but then the celebration of Easter Day when Jesus rose from the dead. It is such a time of mixed emotions. It is also a busy time with lots going on at St Mary’s. Saturday 8th April our Spring Fayre will be in church from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon. Crafts, - made by our very talented Craft Group here – including some lovely Easter crafts, also gifts, games, ‘as-new’ and preserves - something suitable for all the family, so do put the date in your diary and come along. As always, there is tea and coffee and cakes available for sale. The next day, 9th April, is Palm Sunday when at our 10.00 am Holy Communion Service we recall Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey when the crowds spread palm leaves on he road before him. As is our usual custom, Palm Crosses will be given out. Later on that day, at 8.00 pm, we shall hold a service of Compline which is a short, reflective service of Evening Prayer.

The week leading up to Easter Day is known as Holy Week and we traditionally have short reflective services to end the day. These will be at 8.00 pm on Monday 10th and 8.30pm on Tuesday 11th. On Wednesday at 8.00 pm we have a very special service called Tenebrae, The word ‘Tenebrae’ is Latin for shadows and the purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the death of Jesus. It is a quiet reflective service of light into darkness when a series of candles are extinguished leaving the church in darkness. The next day is Maundy Thursday and there will be no Holy Communion Service at 11.00am as we will be attending a service at Bristol Cathedral. At 6.30 pm, in St Mary's, though there will be a service of Holy Communion which will include the symbolic act of foot washing – a reminder of how Jesus washed his disciples feet at the Last Supper. On the 14th, Good Friday we have a Family Service, led by the children from our ‘Kids Klub’, after which is coffee and hot cross buns, a service of meditation and prayer at 1pm and at 2.00pm Shirehampton Area Choir will present a service of readings, hymns & anthems & a Cantata - Pardon Penitence and Peace by Maunder. Sunday 16th is Easter Day; we shall be holding our short Sunrise Service at Shirehampton Park followed by breakfast – do pop in and sign up if you’d like to join us. Kids Klub Service is at 8.30am in church, preceded by breakfast and then our Easter Holy Communion service at 10am after which accompanied children can look for an ‘Easter surprise’ in the churchyard. Thursday 20th April at 3.30 pm there will be a special Messy Church for Easter – a great time for children! Do join us for any of our services and thanks to all those of you who supported our first Café Church – it was a great time together and lovely to see so many here of all ages. Every blessing to you all for Easter.

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club News With days becoming longer and the sun a little warmer the time has almost come to start another outdoor bowling season. April 12th will see the first woods of the new season rolled, on the all-weather green at Wrington. Always a challenge, not only because it is a synthetic surface, which plays rather differently to grass, but also because the hardy host club plays through the Winter ---- stopping only if there is a covering of snow or ice. But --- it will be good to be bowling outdoors once again and looking forward to the season ahead. Between April and October, there will be over fifty mixed ( ladies and gentlemen) games to be enjoyed on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. In addition there are eight games for ladies only. Club League and Club Cup games are played on Monday evenings. Both Ladies and Gentlemen have a team in their respective Bristol and District Leagues and will play in County Competitions. There will be club competitions once again and these culminate at Finals Days in September. The Summer Tour ---- always a seasonal highlight ---- will this year be based in Bournemouth, early in July.

Tuesday evenings will once again be set aside for try bowling and for practice. If you would like to give bowling a try please come along from 6pm onwards ---- it’s free of charge all equipment is supplied and there will be experienced bowlers on hand to give help and advice. You can have three sessions before deciding if bowling is for you. An enjoyable winter of Sunday evening social events concluded on March 12th with a gala evening of skittles. There were four teams of five players and the winning team from each alley played a final whilst the two losing teams played for third place. It was all great fun ---- some of the players had played little or no skittles before whilst others were alley regulars. The winning team was Captained by Brian Crawley with Gill and Pete Gibson, Chris Silverthorn and Gordon Dimond his players. This was a great way to round off a highly enjoyable series of events ---- ranging from the frustration of Beetle Drive, through the concentration of indoor putting and bingo to the head scratching but excellent quiz night. The outdoor season ends early in October but, at the City and Port of Bristol Club there is always something to look forward .

For further information about the Bowling Club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

14. Business to Business

Seasons Businesses can be seasonal. This can be for many reasons and have a significant effect on orders and consequently the operation of the business. If it is not planned for it can cause significant stress on cash flow, staff and service quality. The risks can be divided into two distinct areas:  

Income Cost

Income can be affected by the ability to take orders, receive payments, despatch the goods or provide the service, and general administration. Whilst any business wants to “make hay while the sun shines”, it is unlikely a smaller business can afford the slack in the system so people are waiting for things to happen. Costs include having people on the books all the time or trying to plan for temporary workers to be available at the right time. Stock holding with those associated costs can also make a difference.

The good news is that the use of very affordable business software as well as through outsourcing certain functions, many of the administrative type costs can be bought on an as and when basis. This may be for overflow work or to deal with certain tasks all the time. Telesales, answering the phones, taking orders, first line service calls, bookkeeping, credit control, collection or returns calls, service quality surveys, sending out literature, helplines, out of hours’ assistance, general administration and setting up workable processes can all be outsourced when required. This means the business can focus on working on, distributing and delivering the product or service – the essential activities which generate the income, and probably why the business was formed in the first place. Techvolution are experts in outsourcing and can guide businesses in many areas. If Techvolution do not offer the service themselves, they probably know someone who can help.

IN CINEMASCompetition page Review by Aaron Potter

FAST & FURIOUS 8 Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for any more cast members to join the ever-growing Fast & Furious line up, Dom and family are set to race back onto cinema screens this April helmed by new director F. Gary Gray who takes over the wheel in the franchise’s eighth instalment. Expect faster cars, even crazier stunts, and plenty more exotic locales to drive across as the fate of the furious family is set to experience its greatest challenge yet – betrayal. The Fast & Furious movies aren’t known for sticking to the laws of gravity, and thankfully this April’s Fast & Furious 8 isn’t looking to change that, all thanks to femme fatale baddie Charlize Theron who provokes the team to undertake another globetrotting tyre-squealing adventure.

Throw in the need to team up with previous villain Jason Statham, and it’s safe to say that bonds will be broken.

In honour of Fast & Furious once again getting ready to start its engines, Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are teaming up by letting Fast fans wheelie recapture your sense of adventure with a white-water rafting experience. To be in with a chance of winning, simply head over to facebook.com/directlocal for details. Once you’ve done that, feel free take to the track and experience the action on the big screen at Cineworld Bristol in Hengrove from April 12th, especially if you feel the need, the need for speed. And visit soundcloud.com/ThePictureBlock for plenty of spoiler-filled Fast & Furious podcast discussion if you like listening movies as well as watching them.

Until next time, on your marks, get set, FAMILY!

Call: 0117 325 8029 www.directlocalonline.com 30th April to first of May This is a time of great celebration, when the old tradition of dancing around the maypole, was performed and is a fertility rite. It is the representation of the joining of the God and Goddess, and the energies of life, and joy, and of course that summer is really not far away, although sometimes with the weather it is difficult to believe. The old tradition was that after the celebration and dancing, couples would spend the night together in the woods, and this was known as the green wood marriages. Often the couples would stay together for a year and a day, and the marriage was known as a hand fasting. And after a year and a day together they could decide to remain together or parts amicably, or have a hand fast that would bind them together for the rest of their lives. During a Hand fast, that couples hands are bound together, and this is where the expression tying the knot comes from. However you celebrate this time of year, enjoy and appreciate that the Sun is certainly on its way and the wheel of the year is turning yet again. With many blessings to everyone, may the light of love and peace sign within your being and on your homes. Blessings Marie. Just to let everyone know, I am relaunching my business under the name Mystical You. 30th April to first of May
