Have you ever been to Bristol before? Bristol is a great city to live in but have every been to Bristol? Wait you say! We live in Bristol. Ah! But there are over 29 different Bristol’s in the world, all with similar traits to our great city. Bristol, Tennesse Bristol sits in Sullivan County, Tennessee with a population of 26,702 and is the twin city of Bristol, Virginia. This Bristol apparently lies just across the stateline. But lets’s forget that Bristol and talk about this one for now.
And this Bristol is famous for one thing. Where we go on about having the largest street art festival in Europe, Upfest, They have the oldest continuous independence day celebrations in the whole of the United States. It started in July 1777. That’s seriously old school. But not as old school as the Native American Indians who had a few of their own before hand.
There is a huge Portuguese population that like watching football, real football that we It is most famous for music.– even more than like. So you can catch a game if you ever our Bristol. But not Massive Attack, Tricky or visit. The most famous person there is Antony Portishead. Think more along the lines of Hank Quin who won a best supporting actor Oscar Williams and Dolly Parton. The US Congress in 1952 and 1956. No I haven’t heard of him itself recognised Bristol as the 'Birthplace of either, but apparently he is better than our Country Music' in 1998. With the likes of the own Joe Sims off Broadchurch. Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers first recording there. Bristol, Canada There's a placed called Bristol in New For those that know anything about country Brunswick. It’s merged with a placed called music Joan Carter was married to Johnny Florenceville now, so some call it Cash. If you don’t know Johnny Cash, stop Florenceville-Bristol. Bristol is in the part of reading and do something else. Canada where it snows a lot. Which is pretty Bristol, Rhode Island much all of Canada isn’t it? This Bristol is in Rhode Island. This is where all the leaves go all nice and brown in the Now we Bristonians like to think of ourselves Autumn that you see in films. The surrounding as quite up there in a culinary way, with lots of area is where some of the first ever settlers nice coffee shops and restaurants. Well this that ever came to United States were based. Bristol blows us out of the water. It’s where the best chips in the world come from. Yes it’s the home of McCain Foods, who make McCain oven chips. 4
Bristol, Barbados Have you heard the advert on the telly? ‘McCain oven chips really taste great, gone in a flash on your plate mate. Chips are a banga to date mate. 40% less fat.” Great song. Great chips. They do thick ones, thin ones, anything. The town salutes its finest achievement by, yes! Your reading it correctly a having a potato museum. The main attraction to the town sits just outside, where a giant 300 ft replica of the biblical Noah’s Ark can be found. In a potato field. Bristol, Costa Rica Bristol on the Caribbean coast in Central America is a bit different than ours though. The center is bit more sparse than our Cabot Circus. For many it could lacks shops, for others it could be seen as a breath of fresh air. There are lots of trees and a nice river of which people use boats a lot, and there is a real range of different fruits available.
Bristol, Peru This Bristol is in Peru. Yes in the depths of Peru you will find a place called Bristol. And they actually have a football team. Because this Bristol is far into the Amazon. It only has a population of about 285 people. The village sits in Lorenzo, along the River Maranon in the Amazon. Ideal if you like canoeing or fishing. But in many ways it’s better than our Bristol. The people are isolated but happy away from civilisation. But apparently they have a statue of Ian Holloway by the river bank. Bristol, Barbados Last, but not least, is Bristol in Barbados. Or to be accurate Little Bristol. Or to be even more politically correct Speightstown.
This Bristol was one of the first settlements in the country dating back to 1630. It was one of the first major port and commercial parts of Barbados during the Transatlantic Slave If your an adrenalin junkie, then this place is trade. Ships laden with sugar and other probably not for you, but they do have white commodities were bound for London and water rafting. The best thing about this Bristol is that the airport isn’t too far away. In fact its guess where else? Bristol England. only about 20 miles away from Limón Airport. So you could fly somewhere else that may be On a lighter note the beaches are lovely in Barbados, trust me they are better than better. Weston Super Mare and Severn Beach . 5
More ‘hairy conservationists’ arrive in Avon Gorge
Bagot goats to boost Gully project Visitors are being urged to play their part in preserving Avon Gorge’s wildlife after the arrival of four rare-breed goats boosted a conservation project to save the site’s rare plants and habitats. Gorge users have been asked to stay on the main paths, keep their dogs under control or away from the area and avoid approaching or attempting to feed the quartet of Bagot goats that have now joined the herd in the area of the gorge known as the Gully. Joining two older Kashmir goats already in place, the herd are making a vital contribution to the eco-system in the Gully, with their nibbling of invasive scrub and bramble allowing the opportunity for rare plants to flourish instead. The Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project - a partnership of organisations including Bristol City Council, Bristol Zoo Gardens, Natural England, University of Bristol, the Society of Merchant Venturers, the Downs Committee, Bristol Zoological Society, the National Trust and Forestry - are behind the initiative to restore wildflower-rich grasslands in the Avon Gorge. 6
The year-old Bagot goats arrived earlier this month from the Bristol-based ‘Street Goat’ project, which also runs herd conservation projects with the city council and South Gloucestershire authorities in other areas of the city. The herd are monitored and cared for every day by Bristol City Council’s Downs team, and at weekends by volunteers from the Friends of the Downs and Avon Gorge, with Bristol Zoo Gardens also offering additional veterinary advice and care if required - but the public are also being encouraged to play their part by giving the goats a wide berth to avoid erosion and damage to their habitat. Bristol City Council’s Downs supervisor, Ben Skuse, said: “The new goats have settled in very well. From the moment they arrived, they began eating the invasive scrub. The brown and white Bagots are smaller than the all-white Kashmir goats but they are only one year old so they will grow a little bigger, with their horns growing longer and thicker too. “We understand that they look very cute but they have a vital conservation job to do, so please don’t approach them or feed them. It is also important to keep dogs on leads or preferably don’t take dogs into the enclosure at all.
They have plenty of natural food and if you feed them they may become sick. “The more scrub and bramble they eat, the more space they make for rare plants like the Bristol onion and Bristol rock-cress to flourish so we are asking any visitors to stay on the main paths throughout the Gully and not to stray up and down the steep slopes, which causes erosion and will disturb the goats and other wildlife.” Becky Belfin, Bristol City Council Nature Conservation Officer, said: “The Avon Gorge is an internationally-important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In fact, it’s one of the top three botanical sites in England - home to over 30 kinds of nationally rare and scarce plants, and rare animals that depend on them. “Most of the rare plants grow together, in a habitat known as limestone grassland. Over hundreds of years these grasslands were grazed, keeping them open and largely free from trees.
Grazing stopped in the 1920s and without nibbling mouths trees and scrub began to grow up, shading out most of the grassland and killing of the majority of the rare plants.” Chris Westcott, from Natural England, said: “In June 2011, our six Kashmir goats arrived from the Great Orme. The browsing of these primitive, feral goats has helped opened the area up, giving rare plants like the Bristol onion and Bristol rock-cress, a chance to thrive and spread once again. “Unfortunately, in recent years we lost two of our original goats due to dog attacks and two to old age. So have been looking for more animals to help with progressing the good habitat restoration work and this is where our new Bagot goats come in.” Later in the year, the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project will be running guided walks so that people can find out more about the goats and the special wildlife that they are helping to protect. Details will be published on the Avon Gorge website and their Facebook page.

Summer sandals to invest in now! We are just a few weeks away from summer and warm weather and socialising galore are on the cards, meaning our outfit planning instinct has gone into overdrive. Shorts, dresses and linen shirts all have their place in our warm wardrobes but the summer sandal is the real staple. Come rain or shine, sandals are worn continuously from May to August. It’s the ease at which they pair with any outfit and the comfort they provide when the temperatures rise.

7 money-saving hacks you will wish you knew about sooner Sometimes staying on top of your finances can seem like an unmanageable task. There’s always missing paperwork and hidden costs, or even worse, something unexpected you have to cough up for. But with a little bit of forward planning, you can learn to stay on top of your money before it gets out of hand. From easy money-saving household hacks to knowing when you deserve compensation, here are some of the savvy adjustments you can make this week. Maintain appliances to save on bills The seals around refrigerator and freezer doors need to be replaced periodically to avoid energy loss. Test for a tight seal by closing the door on a banknote. If you can pull the note out, the seal needs replacing, and your money is being wasted on an inflated energy bill. And keep your tumble dryer vent clean and free from blockage at all times. A clogged dryer vent reduces the appliance’s energy efficiency and could cause a fire. When your car goes to pot, seek compensation Potholes have cost UK councils more than £3.7million in compensation in the last 18 months, says the AA. While it costs £39.80 to repair the average pothole, the cost of repairing the car is £140-plus, finds Citroen UK. Hitting a deep pothole, even at quite a slow speed, can damage steering alignment, tyres and wheels. It may not be worth an insurance claim, but you might get compensation from the local council. 10
To make a claim, you’ll need to provide details of the location, the size of the pothole – take a photo with a familiar object in the shot to give a sense of scale – as well as copies of all repair quotes and receipts. For more information click here. Do laundry zipped up Always zip up jeans and other garments that have metal zippers before laundering them. Those little metal teeth are like miniature chainsaws, tearing up and ruining other clothing in the washer and dryer. Nail the shop layout You probably already realise that every item on a shop shelf has been specifically placed there to get you to buy more. New research from logistics specialist Whistl shows 60–70% of what we buy is unplanned and the chances are, the retailer has played a part in getting you to impulse buy. For instance, retailers ‘hide away’ essential items such as milk and bread at the back of the shop so that you are forced to walk along the rest of the aisles to get to it – and past shelves laden with enticing special offers and other goodies.
Cut the cost of credit
Get paid to recycle
Figures show that people with a credit card balance of £2,000 who repay only the minimum amount each month will take 22 years to clear the debt – and will be charged an extra £2,275 in interest along the way. Avoid these charges by moving your debt to a credit card that offers an interest-free deal. Check lockdown return policies

The retailer will either refurbish the device for resale, or recycle its materials responsibly to be reused. Not all Macs qualify though – only models from 2007 onwards are eligible. However, it is important that you do your maths in advance as Apple certainly doesn’t necessarily pay the highest rates –and you might be able to find a better deal by selling on eBay.

Many retailers extended their refund policies while they were closed for lockdown. However, most are restarting the clock from their reopening dates. For example, John Lewis is giving you 35 days from when its stores reopen to return items, while at New Look you have just 14 days.
Have your beloved GHD hair straighteners died a slow death? Well, don’t throw those bad boys in the bin – you can get paid to recycle them and earn some cash towards a new set. Websites such as GHD Spares, for instance, specialise in spares and repairs, and will pay as much as £10 for a broken set. Similarly, recycle any qualifying Apple device online or at an Apple Store and you’ll receive a gift card.

Your Garden In May
Spring is well under way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…
12
Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.
Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period. Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.
Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!
Looking good this month...Geranium Why should you plant them?
Geraniums make popular Plant out young veg bedding plants – either in the garden or Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede outdoors in the summer but are also great for should be okay covered outside. using a houseplant. How should you plant them? City landlord fined thousands for property failures A Bristol landlord has been handed nearly £30,000 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to maintenance and safety failures at three properties, following a prosecution brought by the city’s Private Housing Team. Portfolio holder Naomi Knapp, of East Street, Bedminster, agreed to pay £2,000 a month for at least the next year to meet the fines, costs and victim surcharges totalling £29,597.59, after admitting failing to meet required standards of management in three properties rented as Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) in the case at Bristol Magistrates Court on Monday (19 April). Confirming, in mitigation, that she had carried out the work required and produced relevant safety certificates, Ms Knapp also recognised it would be a responsible step to engage a property management company and agreed to hand over 18 properties to an independent agent to manage the HMO licences. Bristol City Council’s Private Housing Team visited the three properties – in Dartmoor Street, St John’s Lane and Wedmore Vale last summer and discovered conditions to be poor in each. Following up a complaint by five tenants of the HMO at St John’s Lane about an electric shower as well as concerns about the condition of the property they had just started renting, council officers uncovered a long list of breaches under the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006, (The Management Regulations). These included failing to ensure the means of escape from fire was clear, adequate maintenance and keeping outdoor spaces safe and free of rubbish. A further complaint from HMO tenants at Dartmoor Street led to similar findings, with a long list of items in disrepair and safety breaches uncovered. 14
Meanwhile, a check at the HMO-licensed Wedmore Vale address revealed that work on additional kitchen facilities, improvements to the fire safety systems and ventilation to the bathroom had not been completed, with further management regulation breaches including a huge stack of rubbish and cycles in the garden. Ms Knapp entered guilty pleas to three offences for Dartmoor St, for which she was fined a total of £8,000, three offences for St Johns Lane, (£8,000) and two offences for Wedmore Vale, (£6,000). Tom Gilchrist, Bristol City Council’s Private Housing Service Manager, said: “This is the third successful prosecution brought by the Private Housing Team this year. We continue to bring to court landlords that fail in their responsibility to adequately manage their multiple occupied properties. “Naomi Knapp is a portfolio landlord who has been renting property for many years and the magistrates commented that as such she should have the knowledge and experience to act on the issues identified. “The council has agreed with Ms Knapp that all the properties which require a licence with are handed on to a professional agent to hold the licences. As a consequence the tenants can expect the properties to be managed and maintained to a higher standard in the future.”

Bristol family fund new ventilator at Southmead in memory of dad who died from coronavirus The family of a man from Hanham who died from coronavirus last year have raised over £7,250 towards a new ventilator for the Intensive Care Unit at North Bristol NHS Trust. Steve Gay, 64, died on 12 May after five weeks at Southmead Hospital. Although his wife was able to be by his side when he passed, his children had to say goodbye over FaceTime. Last month, he would have celebrated his 65th birthday. His family say he was a healthy man with no underlying health conditions but were told by doctors he had one of the worst cases of the virus they’d seen. Since losing Steve, his loved ones have been determined to raise money through donations from the public to help provide a piece of life-saving equipment for other patients admitted to the same unit, where he spent the last few weeks of his life. 16
In a socially distanced and emotive ceremony, his children were able to return to North Bristol NHS Trust to hand over a £7,250 cheque to Southmead Hospital Charity, which supports patients, staff and families at the Trust’s hospitals. Carrot and stick needed to get burglary down in Avon and Somerset
Independent PCC candidate says ‘carrot and stick’ needed to get burglary down in Avon and Somerset
If elected, John pledges to reinvest in this team to ensure that prolific burglars are targeted.
Independent candidate for Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, John Smith, announces his plans for cutting burglary in Avon and Somerset if he is elected on 6 May.
Drug treatment and improved partnership working – Government funding cuts since 2010 meant significant reductions in drug treatment services and today a third of the current prison population are there for drug-related crimes, including burglary. John believes there urgently needs to be more investment in drug treatment and better programmes for agencies to work together to reduce reoffending.
Avon and Somerset has followed the national trend of increases in burglary since the beginning of central Government police funding cuts in 2010. With a 20% reduction in officer numbers in Avon and Somerset as a result, burglary numbers have been on the increase. However, action taken by John and the current PCC in partnership with Avon and Somerset Police has begun to see a reversal in this trend. On the importance of taking burglary seriously, John said: “Burglary is a terrible crime that leads to fear and trauma for victims as well as loss of property. As a victim of burglary myself, I know how important it is for police to target these criminals and to bring to overall number of burglaries down. If elected, I have a five point plan to help them do this.” If elected on 6 May, John will ask Avon and Somerset police to prioritise preventing burglary and catching burglars in five ways: Continue Operation Remedy, a proactive team dedicated to burglary established in 2019. In the first 6 months of the operation there were 661 fewer burglaries than the previous year – a reduction of 9% - and there were 100 additional burglaries solved. John would ask the force to increase investment in this successful team and set up local proactive teams in each local authority area to target prolific burglars;
Other preventative work – John believes that community engagement and ownership of this issue is important and sees a raft of preventative measures which can be very effective in reducing burglaries, for example Avon and Somerset Watch, a thriving local Neighbourhood Watch scheme; the Safer Homes scheme to provide security advice to homeowners; or expanding the Safer Streets fund to tackle burglary and Anti-Social Behaviour in North Bristol. Restorative Justice - Some burglars don’t like to think about their victims, but making them face this can help prevent re-offending. The Police and Crime Commissioner funds Resolve West who provide a restorative justice service across Avon and Somerset and this can be very effective in reducing reoffending as well as helping victims to cope and recover. Further commenting, John said: “My experience means I know what will and won’t work to bring terrible crimes like burglary down. A carrot and stick approach gets tough on prolific offenders while giving those who want to turn their lives around a chance. As the only independent candidate for Avon and Somerset PCC, I can work with anyone from any political background to tackle burglary and I would answer only to local residents on this aim.”
Offender management – Avon and Somerset previously had an award-winning Integrated Offender Management programme which targeted known prolific offenders with a ‘carrot and stick’ approach – rehabilitation or tougher Elections for the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner are being held on penalties. This team has been reduced as a Thursday May 6. John’s full manifesto can be result of Government funding cuts. viewed on https://www.johnsmith4pcc.com/. 18

The Brislington Greenway - Jos and Andrew’s five-year campaign Brislington West Liberal Democrats, Jos Clark and Andrew Varney, have been leading the campaign for the Brislington Greenway, an active travel corridor, community space and haven for wildlife, along the old Brislington Railway Line since 2016. Labour-run Bristol City Council have consistently opposed our campaign and have earmarked this corridor to construct the Callington Road Linkinstead.
May, 2017: The Regional ‘metro’ mayoral elections take place. Together with Bristol City Council, the dormant Callington Road Link idea is resurrected as part of the new West of England Joint Transport Plan.
Despite Labour’s opposition, our campaign has been incredibly successful with huge support from local residents, active travel charity, Sustrans, and the Bristol Cycling Campaign. But now, with just days to go before the local elections on 6 May, the Bristol Labour mayor and local Labour candidates have distributed a letter to local residents claiming our articles on the Callington Road Link are false and they have no plan to build a road along the former Brislington Railway Line!
Nov, 2017: We launch our petition opposing the Callington Road Link and supporting the Brislington Greenway. This petition currently has over 2,550 signatures. No Labour candidates have signed it.
Here are the facts: Oct, 2016: We first write about the former Brislington Railway Line in our regular, community newsletter, Focus on Brislington West, describing the space as potentially a fantastic asset for Brislington, providing a safe and pleasant green route for walkers and cyclists from Whitchurch to the City Centre.
20
Oct, 2017: We meet representatives from Sustran’s and the Bristol Cycling Campaign to discuss our Greenway ideas, which receive solid backing from both organisations.
Dec, 2017: We hold a cross-party meeting with other Brislington councillors and decide to organise a public meeting. Dec, 2017: We meet John Grimshaw, founder and former CEO of Sustrans to walk the route of the former Brislington Railway Line and help him take measurements and design an active travel corridor. Jan, 2018: Andrew chairs a packed, public meeting at St. Peter’s Methodist Church. Disappointingly, Cllr. Jos Clark is the only local councillor who speaks in favour of the Brislington Greenway.
Her suggestion of using John Grimshaw’s active travel designs, even on a temporary basis, is dismissed by Labour Cabinet Members, Nicola Beech and Mhairi Threlfall. No current Labour candidates attend this meeting. Feb 2018: We make a campaign video with local residents’ group, SPRING (Sandy Park Road Improvement Neighbourhood Group) This video has been viewed over 2,500 times. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/ qAd5Ss1BGno Feb, 2019: The public consultation on the Joint Transport Plan for the West of England commences. The document clearly states the intention to construct the Callington Road Link. Dec, 2019: We present our petition opposing the Callington Road Link at Full Council. Labour councillors try to prevent the petition from being heard but are overruled by council legal services. Mar, 2020: The final version of the Joint Transport Plan for the West of England is published, voted on and approved by Labour-run Bristol City Council. You can watch Bristol Labour councillors voting for the Joint Transport Plan here: https://youtu.be/dKc6MPdI4EI The Callington Road Link is mentioned 15 times in the document. For example, on p51 it states, ‘On the A4 Bristol – Bath corridor through Brislington, road space will need to be reallocated to accommodate mass transit services by diverting through traffic onto the Callington Road Link’. It is also mentioned on p133, p171 and p179. You can view the 187page document here: https://travelwest.info/ app/uploads/2020/05/JLTP4-Adopted-JointLocal-Transport-Plan-4.pdf May, 2020: Labour Cabinet Member for Transport, Kye Dudd, writes to Andrew, rejecting our petition and confirming the plan to build the Callington Road Link. He says, ‘On corridors such as the A4, road space will need to be reallocated to accommodate, in the medium term, metrobus services, and mass transit in the long term. This reallocation of road space will be made possible by diverting some traffic onto the Callington Road Link’.
July 2020: We meet Liberal Democrat regional mayoral candidate, Stephen Williams, on site, who agrees with our Greenway proposals and promises to cancel the road scheme if he is elected on 6 May. Oct, 2020: We hold a meeting with the Bristol City Council project manager working on the Callington Road Link. During this meeting, the project manager sets out the key aspects of the scheme he has been working on for several years including a one-way road from Sainsbury’s to Tesco along the former Brislington Railway Line, the removal of the Sandy Park Road humpback bridge to be replaced with a new, busy crossroads and the removal of the right turn from Brislington Hill onto West Town Lane. Dec, 2020: Bristol East Labour MP, Kerry McCarthy, writes to a local constituent stating, ‘I am not willing to come out in opposition to the Callington Link Road proposal’. Jan, 2021: At Full Council Andrew asks the mayor why he is persisting with the Callington Road Link when we have a climate emergency. The mayor avoids answering the question. Feb, 2021: We hold a follow-up meeting with the Callington Road Link project manager. The plans for the road link are reconfirmed together with a timeline for delivery. Following a public consultation in 2021, construction work is due to commence in Sep, 2023. Apr, 2021: Mid-election, local Labour candidates distribute a letter from the mayor and themselves, claiming there is no plan to build the Callington Road Link! We will leave it up to you to decide who is telling the truth. NEW GYM EQUIPMENT WORKS OUT WELL AT THE MANOR HOUSE Gym-goers at The Manor House have been welcomed back to a fresh start to achieving their health and fitness goals with a new-look facility. During the enforced closure, The Loft – a spacious and modern gym based at The Manor House Golf Club in Castle Combe – has installed an impressive selection of new equipment to provide extra encouragement and variety for any workout. In addition to an upgrade to the Technogym Artis range, a new running treadmill has been added, as well as two extra bikes and two cross trainers, while a selection of new Technogym barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, power bands, density balls and balance domes are now available for use. It all adds to the ongoing relaxed, friendly atmosphere at The Loft with a quieter environment to provide the platform for members to pursue their own individual fitness goals or to work with a personal trainer on a dedicated programme. For keen golfers eager to make the most of the championship-standard 18-hole course in the Cotswolds, gym access is included in the membership. But the facilities are available to all and solo gym memberships are £35 per month (£50 joint). Membership includes access to the tennis court at the main hotel with free parking, changing and shower facilities and a 10 per cent discount on food and beverages in the golf clubhouse. In addition, complimentary access is given to the Technogym MyWellness App, giving a further array of online classes. 24
Andy Ryan, golf club manager, said: “We know our gym members have been eager to return so it’s fantastic we have been able to provide some new updated equipment for them to enjoy. “It has been more difficult to engage in regular exercise for many – especially with no access to indoor gym facilities and equipment throughout the lockdown periods. We’re hoping our existing members will appreciate the new additions and it may also tempt a few new members too.” For more information click an image above

Local Volunteer DJ Turns Her Talents to Property Sales A volunteer DJ for community radio station Glastonbury FM, is turning her talents to property sales by joining Meyers Estates as an associate. Wells based Sara Benham, who regularly gives up her time to broadcast a radio chat and music slot called the ‘Big Air’, will now be responsible for helping the Meyers team market houses in Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet. Sara Benham confirms: “The past year has been tough for many people. I tried to start an event business at the beginning of 2020 but like many others, lockdown forced me to change my plans. Having been an estate agent in the past, I ultimately decided to go back to what I know. “For the past couple of years, my day job has been a Ghost Tour Guide at Shepton Mallet Prison! I loved this experience, but I was keen to start my own business. Moving to Meyers means I’m now on parole! “Meyers Estate Agents is an extraordinary company and the team genuinely care about the clients they work with. Over the past ten years, the franchise network has raised over £250k for more than ten local charities and I wanted to feel I was able to give something back as well as become self-employed. I’m also very much looking forward to connecting more with my local community and contributing to some local charity projects too.” Sara who has also worked for Wookey Hole Caves as a tour guide and counts stand up comedy as one of her hobbies, will continue to broadcast regularly on Glastonbury FM as she pursues her estate agency career. Mark Meyer, principal, Meyers Estate Agents comments: “Having personally been a leading agent in the Somerset area for a few years at a previous firm, I’m now looking forward to having our own Meyers agent cover the region. Sara embodies our true business values and the sense of community sprit we encourage in all our franchisees and staff. 26
As we expand and take on new team members and franchisees, we continue to recruit people who are prepared to go the extra mile and contribute to the wellbeing of the local people in the areas in which we work. We are pleased to welcome Sara and look forward to supporting her on her journey with Meyers.” To find out more about Meyers’ work to help the local community or for further franchise information please click the image above.

Launch of second show home marks successful first phase at The Chocolate Factory A new show home has been launched at The Chocolate Factory development in Greenbank as the first phase is now almost completely sold out. With only one home remaining at £395,500 on the first phase, the new show home will give house hunters an idea of what is to come at the development before the next larger three- and four- bedroom homes with parking are released. The three-bedroom show home has been designed by award winning Bristol based designers Main Interiors and offers a different perspective to the two-bedroom show apartment they completed recently in Elizabeth Shaw House. Jasmine Main, head interior designer at Main Interiors, said: “We were so excited to be asked back by Generator South West to create a new show home at The Chocolate Factory.
28
“This is a new build home, so very different to the apartment we did previously. These three- bedroom houses were a dream to style, with extra wide staircases and curtain windows letting in lots of light - quite the opposite of many of the Victorian terraces in the area. It’s no surprise they have been so popular with buyers even before they had a chance to view a show home. “The inspiration was ‘Japandi’, a mixture between Japanese and Scandi styles but we’ve also tried to incorporate inspiration from the local BS5 community with the colourful artwork and the sustainable products used throughout – something we know is increasingly important. “The tones are very monochromatic black and beige with lots of brightly coloured accessories to give a relaxed and modern look alongside plenty of foliage to add life to the rooms. We dressed the three-bedrooms as two doubles and a home office to show people how the space could be used in different ways but we also show how an area of the living room could be used as a work or play area – the internal design of the house has the flexibility to adapt.”
Having laid derelict for years, developers Generator South West are breathing new life into Greenbank and once complete The Chocolate Factory will boast apartments, houses, a public landscaped square, café/ bar, community hub, retail units, workspace and direct access to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path. Mya Castillo, sales and marketing consultant for the project, said: “It is exciting to be opening our new show home at The Chocolate Factory. New homes provide a fantastic blank canvas for people to make their own mark on but it’s sometimes hard for buyers to envisage themselves living in an empty house. Furnishing and styling a house really helps create a vision of what their home could be like. “There is a real mix of homes at The Chocolate Factory from factory conversions to new build and we are seeing good interest from buyers looking to purchase the next phase off-plan. “Six of the first seven homes are under offer and the next phase will be launched shortly. BS5 is a hugely popular location in terms of proximity to the city centre, access to fantastic schools and a lovely community spirit so we expect interest to be high.”
The Visitor Centre and Marketing Suite will be open Thursday – Monday from 22nd April with viewings by appointment. For more information visit The Chocolate Factory website by clicking an image above

Speed cameras, all you need to know It’s a tired stereotype that drivers think of speed cameras as the enemy, but are they? In June 2019, our Populus poll asked Members if it was acceptable to use speed cameras to identify vehicles involved in speeding offences. 8 out of 10 said yes. But although the vast majority of people accept speed cameras, there are still questions over how they work. Read on to find the answers. Why do we need speed cameras? Speed cameras are an important tool in maintaining and improving road safety. They keep drivers on their best behaviour and make roads safer. That means they should only be a burden for bad drivers. An LSE study showed that from 1992 to 2016, speed cameras reduced accidents by between 17% to 39%. They reduced fatalities by between 58% to 68%. And the effects were seen within 500 metres of the cameras. How do speed cameras work? Speed cameras record a vehicle’s speed by using detectors in the road or radar technology, depending on the type of camera. Some speed cameras combine with traffic light cameras to monitor lights and junctions too. They can detect vehicles travelling over the stop line or entering the intersection after the lights have turned red. If the speed of the vehicle exceeds the legal limit, or a vehicle runs a red light, the camera is triggered. 36
If the car’s owner wasn’t driving then they must let the police know the name and address of the person who was. What is the penalty for speeding? The minimum penalty for speeding is generally a £100 fine and three points on your licence. If the camera detects speeding, it takes a digital image. The image will catch the vehicle’s colour, type, make and registration plate. It may also capture the face of the driver, depending on the type of camera and which way it’s facing. Not all cameras will get a clear picture of the driver. The camera will also record the: • • •
Time and date of the offence Speed you were travelling Speed limit on the road
What happens after you've been caught by a speed camera? If you're caught breaking the speed limit, the image recorded by the camera will scan your car’s number plate to get the registered address from the DVLA. Within 2 weeks of being caught, a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. It'll also include a request to provide driver details in case someone else was driving at the time.
However, this could be higher if you've gone over the speed limit by a lot. You can even get a court summons. However, if it's a first offence and you don't have points on your licence, you could be offered a speed awareness course instead of penalty points.
Just because you didn’t see a speed camera clearly doesn’t mean the fine is invalid. They aren’t there to be spotted and dodged - the point of them is to encourage drivers to stick within the speed limit.
Our guide to speeding and speed limits has everything you need to know.
Speed camera myths Along with many other well-known driving myths, there’s a thought that changing lanes messes up the average speed calculations for SPECS and VECTOR average speed cameras.
Do speed cameras take pictures of the driver? Not all speed cameras take pictures of the driver's face, but some do. This is why it's important you respond to the NIP identifying the driver, because if someone else was driving your car, you risk being punished too. Does a speed camera have to be visible? The Department for Transport revealed that all speed cameras were to be painted yellow by October 2016. This should make most of them easier to see, but mobile speed cameras can be tough to spot.
This is wrong. While older speed cameras could’ve been ‘tricked’, more advanced cameras now use multiple sets of cameras at each point to track all the lanes and compare average speeds. But either way, you shouldn’t be trying to avoid getting caught. It’s safer for everyone to stick to the limits - and the law - by not speeding in the first place.

Georgia said: "I'd been living and working on Sydney's Northern Beaches, where you'd grab a poké bowl for lunch or dinner and head to the beach and watch the surf. When I came back to Bristol, I really missed the flavours and ease of grabbing a super healthy meal, so I decided to start making it myself! With summer approaching and restrictions easing, now is a great time to pop down to Wapping Wharf to pay a visit to some of your old favourites, but also give something new and a little bit different a try too." The new shop will be located in CARGO 2, at Wapping Wharf, in the unit formerly home to The Pickled Brisket. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its treelined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre. Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO - a popular hub made of converted shipping containers, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best independent restaurants, shops, cafes and lifestyle businesses.

The Loaded Naan Last Sunday the skies were blue and the sun as bright as a button. Brilliant I thought, I’ll take myself off into town and grab a bite to eat and a beer in the sun. It was a lovely day for it, so in the car I jumped and off down to the docks I trotted.
As I watched my emotionless almost robotic like sever place the fillings in the wrap I decided to crack a joke. “Don’t be shy, pile it on!” Not even a sideways look! Drizzling the mint yoghurt and spicy sauce over the meat the young lady just looked at my sandwich like she was facing a 10 year stretch for manslaughter! I was given my change in a metal bowl. And my now rather delicious looking naan.
However upon getting down there, the weather decided to change slightly. The wind had picked up and some clouds had started to form. After half an hour looking for somewhere in the sun to sit and eat I gave up on A faint “thank you” came from behind her cloth the idea. It was just too cold in that wind. So I mask which I’m guessing aren’t that healthy to settled for a takeaway sandwich from one of be wearing in a kitchen environment to begin the many food stalls near the now redundant with? water fountains. I walked away and tucked in. It was incredibly I had a look at several of the stalls on show, good. Fresh, bursting with flavour and warm. and eventually chose “The Loaded Naan”. Everything you’d want in a sandwich like this. Serving up freshly cooked fillings, crisp As I tucked in every mouthful was a delight. It’s salads and slaws all served in a toasty warm just a shame the filling wasn’t as bountiful as naan bread. My sandwich of choice was the I’d have liked. Great sandwich but not worth spicy pulled lamb, with coleslaw and cucum- the £8.50 price tag. ber salad. Article by Peter Abraham I had made my choice, gave my order to the Food critic. masked server behind the counter. Now to eat out of any of these stalls isn’t cheap, so one would hope that you would get your fill? 44
