After a few weeks a total of 18 friends and family had also signed up wanting to get involved and help raise money for this fantastic charity.

THOUSANDS EXPECTED TO SIGN UP AS 2015 MIDNIGHT WALK IS LAUNCHED! One of Bristol’s most popular fundraising events will return to the city on Saturday 11 July. The Midnight Walk attracts thousands of women from across Bristol and the South West who take to the streets for a 5 –mile or 10– mile walk to raise money for much-loved local charity St Peter’s Hospice. Taking all the sights of Bristol including the ss Great Britain, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Harbourside, the sixth annual Midnight Walk aims to raise in excess of £100,000 for terminal patient care in Bristol. Already signed up for this year’s night walk is Laura Minton a member of the Wally’s Walkers team, made up of 18 family and friends walking in memory of Laura’s father Alan Hall, who died of bowel cancer aged 65 in May 2014 Laura, her mum Stephanie Hall, and the rest of the Wally Walkers are encouraging others to sign up and raise vital funds for Bristol’s only hospice. Laura, 31 form Stockwood, said: “Myself and Wally Walkers took part in the 10-mile Midnight Walk last year for the first time after my wonderful Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January 2104. it was a truly heartbreaking start to the year and I was devastated at the thought of losing my Dad. “during this time St Peter’s Hospice provided both emotional and medical support to my mum and dad which allowed him to fulfil his wish of staying at home as long as possible. A lovely community nurse, Debbie, from the hospice gave advice and counselling and listened to both of their worries. She also gave financial advice and helped with what benefits they were entitled to.

We came up with the name “Wally’s Walkers” after my Dad called us wallys for wanting to walk through the night for him. “Sadly just four months after his initial diagnosis my dad passed away on May 31st 2014. We all wanted to continue with the walk in Dad’s memory so we took to the streets of Bristol wearing our pink tshirts, Where’s Wally hats, stripy socks and glasses and raised over £4000 in total. “This year we are looking forward to raising more for the hospice at the 2015 Midnight Walk. We very much hope that no one will ever need to sue this charity, but for anyone that does, having a lifeline like this won’t make everything ok but it will support you through the darkness. “The Midnight Walk is a great event to get involved in. It’s not as strenuous as a marathon but the atmosphere is exactly the same with everyone cheering each other on. Sign up and help support families like mine.” The fun walk kicks off at 10.30pm from Ashton School, with participants walking through the midnight hour in pink t-shirts and fancy dresses. St Peter’s Hospice events fundraisers Louisa James said: “ We had our most successful Midnight Walk ever last year and we’re expecting great numbers once again. “This is one of our most popular fundraisers and has become an established Bristol event over the years. Groups of friends and family come together for a great cause and we’ve even had some hen parties in previous years, which makes the night even more fun. Join us for the biggest and best girls’ night out in the South West!” Early-bird registration for the Midnight walk is available until 30 April for £15. those who register will receive an events pack, including a pink t-shirt. For more information on St Peter’s Hospice on the Midnight Walk visit www.stpetershospice.org

“I wanted to bring a small positive out this huge negative and try to focus some of my energy into raising money for St Peter’s Hospice, so I signed up for the Midnight Walk. “

Did you know that a 100 tons of unwanted clothing are exported for re-use each week in Bristol? Founded in 1972 by the late, Fernley Piper, Bristol Textile Recyclers is a family run, local employer. Now run by Fernley's son, Haydn, BTR was formally known as Avon Rag until 1997, when the company rebranded. BTR’s current premises, on Victoria Terrace, St Phillip’s Marsh and only a ten minute walk form Temple meads, used to be a row of houses until it was bombed during the 2nd World War and then rebuilt in the 1950’s as the factory stands today. BTR moved during the early 2000’s having previously resided on Midland Road and then Avon Street in Bristol.

BTR also works with schools, PTA’s, community groups and other third-sector, non-profit organisations helping them to fundraise through recycling by organising clothes drives and placing recycling banks throughout their catchment area. BTR has great plans for the future including aspirations for new environmentally friendly, sustainable premises and assisting in the future development of Bristol Textile Quarter. If you would like to learn more about BTR Ltd, please visit their website, www.btr-ltd.co.uk, or contact the team to arrange a factory tour.

BTR Ltd is currently the only Textile Recycler in the West of England, working predominately with charity shops throughout the West of England, Gloucestershire, Midlands, M4 Corridor and Hertfordshire. BTR helps charity shops with the recycling of their unsellable goods, helping the charities to further fundraise for their core cause as well as we keep their stock room clear for new donations.

Slimming World Are Looking Out For Consultants In The Local Area I joined Slimming World as a member in 2008, because I was fed up with feeling frumpy. I was fed up with not being able to buy the lovely clothes I wanted to wear. I saw photos of myself at a family Christening and couldn’t believe it was really me – how big I looked and how miserable I had become. So I decided to take action… I looked up my nearest Slimming World group online and went the very same week. I have to say I am a really fussy eater and not a brilliant cook, so was very wary that I would be not be able to follow the plan. My Consultant, Emma, was lovely and reassured me that it would fit in with my lifestyle, and that they would help me in group each week to find things I could eat. Six months later I was 2 ½ stones lighter and felt amazing! I felt I was me again, and could not believe how easy it had been. Slimming World is now a part of my life and I have been a target member for over 5 years now.

. If you feel you have the energy, drive and enthusiasm; if you enjoy the satisfaction of learning new skills, then this prestigious and rewarding role could be the best thing in the world for you. Being a Slimming World Consultant offers: An excellent income and flexible hours that fit around family life. On average, Consultants earn between £100-£400 for working 10-20 flexible hours per week. Encouragement, help and support, along with expert training at the Slimming World Academy. So I would like to invite you to come along to our next opportunity event to find out more about this amazing role. Our next event will be held on April 26th at 10am.. Please give me a call on 07879 443888 and I can reserve you a seat.

As you can see I became a Consultant and now run two busy groups, helping and inspiring other people to do what I did… to lose weight and feel amazing again. Who would have thought joining Sliming World- to lose weight would change my life... It also changed my career path and I would like to offer you the opportunity I was given to find out more... We’re looking for special people to join our evergrowing Team of Consultants in the local area, who are either past or present members, people who have a positive outlook and who genuinely care about the health and happiness of others Whether you’re confident and outgoing, or more reserved, as a Consultant you’ll be kind, warm, sometimes firm – often funny – as you offer support and encouragement to your group members. With the experience of being a successful Slimming World member and well on the way to your target, you don’t need any special qualifications to apply. If the role is the right role for you, you’ll receive all the training and support you need to succeed, wrapped in warmth, humour, understanding and respect.

Case study: First Time Property Buyer A first time buyer visited the offices of Cooke Painter Solicitors to discuss with Wajid Darr, a director of the firm, the process of making an offer on a property. He had left University and was in the first year of his first job. Wajid advised him that he should check the costs involved and his finances first before referring him to an independent Financial Adviser for mortgage advice. The client had an option of using his own adviser or, if required, Cooke Painter have a database of reliable contacts. Wajid then explained the process to the client, as well as the intricacies of what should be expected at each stage. The client consulted a Mortgage Adviser, who confirmed that he could proceed and put an offer on the property, which he did so on returning to us. The offer was successful and we started the legal process. Wajid gathered all the necessary documents (such as identification), obtained draft contract package from the sellers Solicitors and forwarded copies on to the client, advising him throughout the process. We believe in a proactive approach with our clients and explain any legal documents in detail, which is usually felt to be very useful particularly for first time buyers. Wajid then raised enquiries with the seller's solicitors and obtained searches on behalf of the client, and corresponded with the mortgage broker until the mortgage offer was received. The client was updated on a regular basis throughout the transaction, and upon receipt of all enquiries, searches and mortgage offer, Wajid forwarded a Title Report and invited him to the office. Wajid explained the mortgage offer in detail before the client confirmed that he would like to proceed, fully confident that he understood all the facts and details about the property he was about to purchase. The client didn't realise how simple the process could be and was really grateful for the information we gave him, since he knew what would happen at every stage both before and after completion of the purchase.

Q1: Am I right in thinking that I will soon be able to transfer my personal allowance to my husband? In the 2014 Budget it was announced that from April 2015 a spouse or civil partner may transfer up to £1,060 of their personal allowance to their spouse/civil partner, provided that the recipient of the transfer is not liable to income tax above the basic rate. Therefore, the use of this measure is restricted, but it can provide a benefit where one spouse or civil partner has an income less than their personal allowance (this will be £10,600 for the majority of people in 2015/16). At the date of publishing, no announcement had been made as to how the election would be made. But the lead proposal put forward is that one party will apply on-line to transfer the allowance to their spouse or civil partner and HMRC will notify the recipient about the subsequent changes to their tax code. Q2: I’ve just gone self employed. How do I go about paying my stamp? The self employed pay two types of National Insurance: Class 4 which is dependent upon the level of profits and is collected via a self assessment tax return each year.Class 2 which is a fixed amount. In the past, Class 2 National Insurance has typically been collected from taxpayers via direct debit. But from April 2015, Class 2 National Insurance will become an annual charge and will be collected via the tax return and the Self Assessment regime along with Class 4 NI. As your business is just starting out, I would recommend that you seek advice on your affairs. This can make sure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to and making the most of all the tax planning opportunities you have available. And crucially this year, if your profits fall below the small earnings level, Class 2 will not fall due. This could lead to gaps in National Insurance records which will have an impact when claiming some state benefits such as the state pension. Disclaimer: advice shared in this blog is intended to inform rather than advise. Taxpayer’s circumstances do vary and if you feel that the information provided is beneficial it is important that you contact us before implementation . If you take, or do not take action as a result of reading this forum, before receiving our written endorsement, we will accept no responsibility for any financial loss incurred.

History Of Easter Easter is celebrated all over the world to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ—the son of the God. The young and the old, the rich and the poor, man and woman and people of all races celebrate Easter. However, Easter has been commercialized to a large extent by companies manufacturing Easter related product item and the greeting card industry. It is important that in all commercialization of this very important festival, one does not forget about the history of Easter. Easter is one of the most celebrated festivals of the modern Christian Church. According to St. Bede, an English historian of the eighteenth century, Easter owes it origin to the old Teutonic mythology. The name Easter originally came from the word ‘Eostre’. Eostre was the ancient Greek goddess of spring. It is believed that every year, Eostre returned to Earth after a long, cold winter and brought along with her the light and warmth of Spring. Thus, ancient Greeks held pagan festivals to welcome Eostre and herald the onset of spring. The Christian church however, changed the pagan festival from celebrating spring to the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. In 325 A.D. the church also changed the date of the festival. The festival was no longer held on the spring equinox. Instead, as per the Church Council of Nicaea henceforth it was to be held on the very first Sunday following the full moon or after the vernal equinox. Thus, today Easter is celebrated on different dates every year and can occur as early as March22nd or as late as April 25th.

The pagan festivals always coincided with the vernal equinox on the 21st of March every year. Though the Geek were not fully cognizant of why and when spring comes, they believe that Eostre must be pleased to ensure that she returns year after year. The festivals were lavished feasts that celebrated the booming of new flowers, the chirping of birds, butterflies, and sunshine and in general the feeling of rejuvenation that is inherent of spring. Some people may believe that Easter is related to other races, the Hebrew celebration, the Jewish Passover. Passover is the celebration of freedom of the Israelis from bondage and slavery after 300 years. It was during the Passover in 30 A.D. that Christ was crucified for being blasphemous. The resurrection happened three days later on what is today known as Easter Sunday. The early Christians, many of whom were raised as Jews Considered the resurrection and Easter as a new pat of pascha. Thus the early celebration of Passover came to be celebrated as Good Friday and Easter. Today grand scale events mark the celebration of Easter in the Untied States and across the globe. Many traditional symbols of Easter continue to dominate the scene while new traditions are being part of the festival too. Thus, Easter is a festival that denotes life, rejuvenation, renewal, rebirth and restoration of all beings on Earth.

South Bristol’s Award-Winning Ladies Barbershop Chorus SONG IN THE SOUTH A Capella, Barbershop, Bristol Fashion – what do the renowned South Bristol Pizzeria, a gentlemen’s hairdresser and a piece of North Street street art (Ship Shape and …) have in common, you may ask. Well, they all apply to the award winning Ladies’ Barbershop Chorus ‘Bristol Fashion’ who are based in South Bristol, rehearsing every Thursday evening at Four Acres School in Withywood. Bristol Fashion has been singing in and around South Bristol for more than 37 years. Barbershop singing is a form of A Capella singing. A capella is an Italian term, meaning ‘as in a chapel’, and is defined as singing without instrumental accompaniment. In Barbershop this means singing in four parts – from highest pitched - tenor, lead, baritone and bass, usually with the Lead part taking the melody. Most types of song can be arranged for Barbershop, for which there are certain rules, which lead to the distinctive barbershop sound. Bristol Fashion’s Musical Director, Craig Kehoe is often asked at performances how he keeps 50 plus women in order (that’s numbers, not ages though some of them are) – his answer would probably be ‘with difficulty’ but ‘his girls’ as they are sometimes known would say ‘with great skill, gentle discipline and charm’. In fact the age range is from teens to late seventies. At present four nationalities sing with the chorus. They are a friendly bunch and welcome visitors and prospective new members. Barbershop is very much a performance medium and the chorus aims to give an entertaining performance. Their repertoire is varied, containing romantic ballads and lively up tempo numbers old and new. They are available for hire – why not check out their website www.bristol-fashion.org.uk where you will be able to see photos, reviews, news of events and listen to samples of their repertoire. It will also tell you how to contact them. It is a proven fact that singing is good for body, mind and soul, so, if you are female, love to sing or would love to learn, email PRO@bristol-fashion.org.uk, phone 07823 555 098 or just take yourself to Four Acres School at 7.30 one Thursday evening and find out more.

Local Shop Stands The Test Of Time Pembury’s Cycle shop started in 1933 as a grocer/ haberdasher, with teas and homemade icecream served in the back garden for people walking to and from Dundry, mainly at weekends. By 1935 it had become a sweet and cigarettes shop, and by 1938 a bicycle and accessories shop—selling blackhandled-barred cycles with black bells during the blackout years of the Second World War— and post -war it settled for cycles, and repairs, and some toys. From the start it was owned and run by Bert and Cis Pembury, as one of the four businesses (3 shops and 1 garage) set up by Bert’s mother for her four sons, with the proceeds from the success of her original faggot and peas shop in West Street, Bedminster . That shop changed to selling bicycles and petrol, and providing a taxi service, run successfully by Fred, who had a good head for business, like his mother. A new garage and cycle shop built at the top of Bedminster Down, opposite the ’Cross Hands’, were run by brothers Bill and Ted, with kind hearted help (but no business sense!) from their father; and Bert, the eldest and most like his father , was set up in the quiet village of Bishopsworth where Cis had to become the business woman! They struggled through the war years, with hardly anything to sell, and Bert worked on repairing buses at the Lawrence Hill Depot of the Bristol Tramways & Carriage Company. Trade increased when the new estates of Withywood, Hartcliffe and Highridge were built in the late ‘40s/ ‘50s, but by then both Bert and Cis were in poor health, so their elder daughter, took over, keeping the shop name of Pembury’s. They expanded for some years into former greengrocery store next door and developed the cycle repair side, before retracting to the one shop. When Kathleen and Eric retired in the early ‘90s, new owners also kept the family shop name and maintained the same trade; and now it is a specialist cycle shop with fresh owners, but still keeping the old name and expanding to two more shops—one at the top of Bedminster Down (where the old garage and shop has long gone, as is the shop in West Street), and one in Gloucester Road, Bishopston. Ironically, the shop that was least expected to succeed is the very one that has survived and carried on the Pembury name!

Hengrove Pharmacy Hengrove Lane Bristol BS14 9DB 0117 300 5446

ALLERGY AWARENESS – HAYFEVER We present the second of our articles on a very common issue and one that might become increasingly prevalent now that Spring is here- Allergies. Affecting one in five people, hay fever is the common name for a common airborne allergy caused by allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose). Educating the public about hay fever and supporting those with this condition is one of the most common roles of Pharmacists and Healthcare workers especially at this time of year and throughout Summer. However some patients suffer from allergic rhinitis all through the year. The staff at Hengrove Pharmacy are very knowledgeable to help you with a choice of various treatments to suit your needs. As the name suggests Hayfever or Allergic Rhinitis is caused by particles of allergen (dust, pollen, animal dander, mould) triggering the release of HISTAMINE from mast cells lining the tissues of the nose. This causes symptoms such as runny, itchy and ‘scratchy nose, excess mucous production, sneezing, aggravating cough, malaise, sore and streaming eyes, blurred vision and tiredness. This can be very unpleasant and can even debilitating. It can also trigger asthma attacks or migraines in those people with those conditions. Pollen is the main cause and this is a fine powder produced by plants as part of their reproductive cycle mainly during the warmer months. Known as hay fever season, this lasts from Spring to late Summer. Local media may well notify viewers of the “pollen count” which is an independent assessment from the Met Office of the levels of circulating pollen and the likelihood of misery being caused to hay fever sufferers; a bit like the weather forecast! There is no cure for hay fever but the symptoms can be managed and life made bearable by common over the counter medications available from pharmacies. Sufferers tend to find that symptoms lessen in severity as they get older and for a lucky 10-20 per cent of sufferers the condition even disappears altogether. Minimising exposure to pollen by staying indoors helps but this cannot be totally effective so medications help. Allergic Rhinitis Treatments Available: Tablets: As the name suggests antihistamines counter the inflammatory effects of histamine which causes most of the unpleasant symptoms of hayfever (allergic rhinitis). Older generation antihistamines can cause drowsiness (chlorphenamine, promethazine, diphenhydramine) so they tend not to be used as hayfever treatments anymore but continue to be used in sleeping tablets! Obviously not very good if you want to hold down a day job. Chlorphenamine also known as Piriton however is less sedating and is commonly used against hayfever as it is safe in pregnancy and tried and trusted by many generations. By far the most popular treatments are the second generation antihistamines (AHs which don’t cause drowsiness and have very few side-effects and don’t interfere with most other medications. They are most often taken once a day and work quickly. These are the mainstay of the battle against hay fever and include cetirizine, loratadine and acrivastine (Benadryl). We suggest you buy cheaper generic formulations as they are just as effective as expensive branded preparations and often even cheaper than the 2 for 1 offers in major high street pharmacies. Nasal Sprays: If the nasal symptoms are particularly troublesome, AHs can be effectively combined with nasal sprays that stabilist the mucous membranes lining the nose for enhanced protection. Beconase (twice daily usage), Pirinase (once daily) are the most common and these are steroid nasal sprays. Don’t be alarmed by the word “steroid” as these are topical (skin) preparations and are hardly absorbed into the circulation and do not cause the notorious side-effects that oral steroids are known to do.

24. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline com

Again opt for the cheaper generic beclomethasone nasal spray over the counter. As with all steroids they do not act immediately and you have to remember to use them every day without fail. On the second or third day onward, once they kick in, the relief can be significant. These are used in preference to nasal decongestants that you might use for runny noses caused by colds which you can’t use for more than seven consecutive days. Eye Drops: Finally, runny itchy and watery eyes can also be treated separately with specific eye drops if they are especially problematic. The treatment of choice is either Otrivine Antistin or Opticrom eye drops but as usual opt for the cheaper generic sodium cromoglycate eye drops. One drop in both eyes four times daily usually does the trick. Combining all three classes of treatment or a combination designed around your symptoms can be very effective. Also flushing the nasal passages with Sterimar nasal spray cleans and maintains the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages. An Unbeatable Offer The unbeatable Crizal spectacle lens offer continues through April. You can have a complimentary second pair of spectacle lenses with every purchase of Crizal lenses. It’s a great opportunity to have two new pairs of glasses at a greatly reduced price via a partnership between a Bristol lens crafter and Lynne Fernandes Optometrists. Crizal spectacle lenses reduce glare, scratches, smudges, dust, water and UV, giving you superior vision whilst eliminating all of the annoying factors that come with wearing some glasses. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, we don't believe in giving you a ‘spare’ pair of specs, every pair we dispense has a primary purpose; they aren’t for keeping in the back of a dusty cupboard. Your complimentary pair can be clear or sunglass Crizal prescription lenses and when combined with the fabulous frames we currently have in stock you can achieve two complete different yet stylish looks. As we are independent optometrists, we treat you as an individual and give your vision the time and attention it deserves. Unlike some retail chains, we have the freedom of choice and only recommend the right products specifically for you. When wondering if you need two pairs of glasses, ask yourself how many pairs of shoes you have. You would never compromise with only one pair so don't compromise on your vision and eye health. Come in and see us today for some expert advice.

I’m so proud of Lynne. She is a finalist for Optometrist of the year. For those of you who have been with us for all 15 years you will know she deserves the national recognition. This season’s seller continue to be Lindberg. These beautiful engineered eye pieces are created bespoke for you. Lindberg frames and Crizal lenses have much in common including only working with specialist opticians. Crizal lenses are manufactured locally, but Lindberg are pure Danish design. However watch this space for the first Bristol based designer of bespoke eye wear. Our resident optometrist Connor McCann has received rave reviews from patients over the last year and has made the transition in to our unique eye care style very well. Connor has developed a specialist clinic in a revolutionary eye lid treatment that is now available to current and new patients. It is called BlehEx and is suitable if you experience blepharitis, Dry Eyes, watery eyes, or even comfort issues with contact lenses. Have a look at lynnefernandes.co.uk under “what it blepharitis ?” Our new website is now up and running. The stand out feature is MySight, a system we have developed with our software provider to allow you to book appointments online 24/7. The plan is we will develop this into an app for your phone or tablet that will enable you to have more details about your eye care to hand and even review our service to you. My hope is that our openness with prescriptions, with price, with the excellent service our teams provide will give you increased confidence in trusting us with your eye care and eye ware.
