Mum drops a dress size and cures postnatal depression An overweight mum finally managed to shift her mummy tummy thanks to Slimming World. Millie has shed nearly two stone and overcame postnatal depression thanks to Slimming World. Millie Lewis was severely depressed after the birth of her son in 2010, and ballooned to more than 14 stone. After piling on the pounds the 39 year old became too embarrassed to venture out and started to comfort herself by gorging on takeaways and sugary snacks. She lived in leggings and jogging bottoms and her self-esteem plummeted.
“I feel amazing, everyone comments on the difference too.” She added “I noticed a difference in my eating habits almost immediately. Gone were pre-packaged convenience foods and now I prepare & cook all our family meals from scratch. I still eat all my favourite foods like spaghetti bolognaise, and chips. How many diets to you know where you can eat chips? And I still indulge in the odd gin & tonic and bar of chocolate. Joining Slimming World has not only helped her shift the weight but it has boosted her confidence and helped her overcome crippling post natal depression. She said “after I had my son, I was severely depressed and just ate complete rubbish. I was a shell of my former self. The post natal depression came on after being told I would never had children, then after a number of failed IVF attempts, I gave birth to a premature baby who demanded my total attention. I was too embarrassed to leave the house, it was sink or swim & I just sank. The more weight I gained, the more depressed I became and if I did go out the anxiety would be too much, it would spiral out of control”.
I‟m so grateful to the person who posted that leaflet through my door, I was looking for something to help me lose weight for good and I thought I‟d give it a try.
Thanks to her newly found confidence, she has taken up running which helps keep her weight down and improve her fitness. Running for the bus was once a struggle, now Millie runs 5K routes regularly and recently completed her first half marathon. “I didn‟t think I‟d ever be able to do it, but what Slimming World has taught me is that nothing happens overnight. You have to keep working towards your goal and after running through the finish line was so emotional – I was so proud of myself. Seeing my son and my husband waiting for me made it worth the effort”
I lost a staggering 6lbs in my first week and have steadily lost weight week by week; I‟m still on my journey and planning to get to target by summer 2015.
For more information about Millie‟s Slimming World group, contact her on 07879 423665 or visit www.slimmingworld.com
But after a Slimming World leaflet landed on her door one Sunday afternoon, Millie knew it was time to take action. She joined the following week and to date has lost two stone, half way to her target of losing four stone. The mum-of-one joined in January just after Christmas and Slimming World has helped her completely change her eating habits. Millie, from St Annes, has now recovered from the crippling post natal depression that left her reluctant to leave home after giving birth to her son. She said “I have tried every diet available. I would lose weight initially then pile it all back on again.

M P s y a s l l A r o F Jobs David Cameron has said he wants everyone in Britain to have a job. The Prime Minister was talking recently about the plans he‟s got if his Conservative Party wins the general election in May and stays in government. Mr Cameron said it had been a “tough few years” but added that the country was “coming out the other side”. In a speech in Ipswich, the Prime Minister said full employment would mean that “anyone who wants a job, is able to get a job in our country”. The prime minister did not put a timescale on the pledge, which he described as “an aspiration [he] wants to achieve”. He described the minimum wage as a success and said it should be raised regularly, pointing to the increase to £6.50 in October. He said he looked forward to the minimum wage reaching £7 and that the “circumstances are now ripe for further increases”. “In terms of how you help people on low pay, the best thing you can do is cut their taxes,” the Prime Minister said. “That‟s why our ambition is that you should be able to earn £12,500 before you pay any income tax.” Mr Cameron defended his government‟s economic record. “This idea that all the jobs created in Britain in the last four years are low paid and zero-hours contracts is just not true.” He said 90% of the jobs created in the past year have been full-time and two-thirds have been highly skilled, therefore demanding a higher salary. “Do I think we‟ve solved Britain‟s economic problems? Of course not. Have we got a lot more to do to make this economy a great success story in Europe? Yes, of course we have. But we‟re on the right track with 1,000 jobs created every day this government‟s been in office.” On current trends, the scheme will have created at least 100,000 jobs by 2020. The programme provides small loans (on average £5,000 – £6,000) to people who would struggle to secure credit from banks or building societies because of a lack of collateral. Politicians from other parties said the Prime Minister‟s words didn't mean anything. Labour‟s Rachel Reeves said wages had fallen by £1,600 every year, while the number of people who weren‟t being paid enough to live on had risen to nearly five million. At the moment, there are just under two million adults out of work in the UK. 8. Call Direct Local on 0117 905 1154 * info@DirectLocalMagazine.com * www.DirectLocalMagazine.com

What Is Freedom Of Speech? ...and are there limits? The world is still reacting to the terrorist attacks that shook Paris last month. One of the attacks coast 12 people their lives, after terrorists raided the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a magazine that was famous for poking fun at people and events. Afterwards, a worldwide debate over freedom of speech erupted. The UK is known around the world for it‟s respect for free speech. But, even here and under European law, there are some limits. For instance, you‟re not allowed to say untrue things about people that may damage what other people think about them. This is called defamation. And a person could be arrested for making hate speeches that could lead to violence. Much of the law is about trying to strike the right balance between freedom of expression, and bad use of that freedom, which harms the country.
Charlie Hebdo team put together what they called the “survivors‟ issue” of the magazine. They used a cartoon of Muhammad on the front cover again. Many thought this was a dangerous decision.
Before the attacks on 7th January, the Charlie Hebdo staff had received threats for printing cartoon pictures of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Producing images of Muhammad is offensive to some Muslims.
Millions of copies of the “survivors issue” were released in shops all over France on Thursday 15th January, with the special edition selling out in just a few hours. Lots of people bought a copy in support of the magazines right to freedom of speech.
The Islamic extremist terrorists killed cartoonists and writers who worked at the magazine, which continued to publish images of Muhammad after the threats.
But was it worth it? Why publish something that could potentially anger extremists once again and result in another similar attack?
Following these attacks, everyone started talking about “freedom of speech”. People and journalists all around the world have been defending free speech by holding up signs or tweeting „Je Suis Charlie (I Am Charlie‟.
The magazine has said it has the right to print whatever it wants and would never give in to threats. Others believe the magazine went too far and that to poke fun at something personal and sensitive, like religion, pushes the limits of free speech too far.
A week later, the remaining members of the

Move Those Legs A study of more than 334,000 men and women has found that a 20 minute walk every day can lower the risk of death. The report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a fifth of the study group did NO exercise at work or in their own time. However, a brisk 20 minute walk would be enough to reduce their risk of death and allow people to live for an estimated eight months longer. The researchers say that in 2008, 9.2 million people in Europe died and that 337,000 of these deaths were due to obesity. More important was a lack of activity, as this killed 676,000 people. “This is a simple message: just a small amount of physical activity each day could have substantial health benefits for people who are physically inactive. Although we found that just 20 minutes would make a difference,” said Professor Ulf Ekelund, “we should really be looking to do more than this. Physical activity has many proven health benefits and should be an important part of our daily life.” Government guidelines advise Britons to do 150 minutes of moderate activity such as gardening, dancing, or brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, including playing sport, running or martial arts every week. But a recent survey found that a third of people can barely manage to walk for 30 minutes over seven days, even when trips to the shops, work or school are considered.
interventions that encourage people to make small but achievable changes in physical activity can have significant health benefits and may be easier to achieve and maintain.” June Davison, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “The results of this study are a clear reminder that being regularly physically active can reduce the risk of dying from coronary heart disease.” The research suggests that just a modest increase in physical activity can have health benefits. Adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, carrying it out in sessions of ten minutes or more. Whether it‟s going for a walk, taking a bike ride, using the stairs instead of the lift or joining a martial arts class, keeping active every day will help reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease.” A brisk 20-minute walk would burn between 90 and 110 calories. The authors defined premature death as dying before the average age for doing so.
And a report backed by the initiative Walking for Health last year found that physical inactivity cost the economy up to £10billion a year through sick days, healthcare costs and early deaths. Professor Nick Wareham, director of the Medical Research Council epidemiology unit at Cambridge, said: “Helping people to lose weight can be a real challenge, and whilst we should continue to aim at reducing population levels of obesity, public health

Holocaust Memorial D
Remembering hor More than one million people were killed at Auschwitz in Poland during World War Two. The majority were Jews and the former extermination camp is the world's biggest Jewish cemetery.
Survivors laid wreaths and lit candles at the so-called Death Wall at Block 11 on January 27th to mark 70 years since the camp's liberation, and remember those who never left.
The site was also the death place for many people who did not fit into the Nazis' view of their world. Poles, lesbians, homosexuals and the disabled were amongst those also killed here.
An inspirational grandmother who survived the horrors of Auschwitz concentration camp led the Holocaust memorial last month.
Many of the concentration camps set up by the Nazis in World War Two were razed to the ground, but Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated before it was completely destroyed. Now it's a museum. The picture below shows the forbidding railway entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.
Mindu Hornick, was just 12 years-old when she was sent to the notorious Nazi extermination camp with her mother, sister and two younger brothers. The 85-year-old arrived at Auschwitz in a cattle carriage, but survived along with her older sister Eva after a Polish prisoner advised the girls to lie about their ages and claim they were skilled seamstresses. “When we arrived at the camp there was 70 of us, all women, mothers and children, in the wagon,” said Mindu “There was an immediate air of shock and panic, and SS guards set out to disorientate and scare you.” “A Polish man, in striped uniform spoke Yiddish to my mother and told her to send us ahead, and say we were 17 and 19 years

Looking back he saved our lives.” Born to Jewish parents in a small town outside Prague, Mindu’s hay merchant father was forced into the army after the German occupation. After being sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942 Mindu and her sister were sent to an underground ammunitions factory hidden in Polish woodland, which would ultimately secure their survival.
Prague, but was forced to flee to live with an uncle to Birmingham in 1948 during the Soviet occupation. “After the cafe culture of Prague, Birmingham felt very smoky and dark, but I was safe and free for the first time,” said Mindu, “None of us were able to speak about what happened, and no one wanted to know. Instead people were concentrating on rebuilding cities, countries and their lives.” Mindu was invited to light one of 70 candles designed by Sir Anish Kapoor, distributed to venues all over the UK, to remember victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
“When people ask how I survived, I always tell them the same thing – sheer luck,” said Mindu. “But also people survived in pairs – I had my sister. We were constantly hungry and cold, and all we thought about was food.” After being liberated by the American army in May 1945 Mindu initially returned to
The infamous sign, made by a prisoner, was erected by the Nazis after the Auschwitz barracks were converted into a labour camp to house Polish resistance fighters in 1940. Auschwitz was later expanded into a vast death camp.

6 things you didn't know about sugar The British Heart Foundation’s Senior Dietitian Victoria Taylor answers questions about sugar, from its various names to whether honey is healthier. 1. Is sugar bad for me?
4. Which types of sugar should I avoid?
There‟s nothing wrong with some sugar. However, diets that are high in sugar tend to be higher in energy (calories) too, which can lead to weight gain and obesity. We should try to get most of our carbohydrates from starchy, rather than sugary, sources; the body breaks down starchy carbohydrates less quickly, giving a slower release of energy.
Mainly, it‟s added sugars we need to cut down on, as these add energy to our diets but nothing else. Naturally occurring sugars usually come with some additional nutritional benefits, like vitamins and minerals. However, with fruit juices, you still need to be careful. The energy is higher in a glass of juice than in a single portion of fruit, as it takes several fruits to make a glass of juice. It‟s recommended we stick to one 150ml portion of fruit juice in a day.
2. How much is too much? Added sugar shouldn‟t make up more than 10 per cent of the calories we get from food. For men, that‟s the equivalent of 70g a day and for women, 50g a day. In the UK, dietary surveys show on average we are exceeding these recommendations. See our recipe finder at: www.bhf.org.uk for heart-healthy recipes with full nutrition information.
5. How can I tell how much sugar is in my food? Front-of-pack labels will tell you the total sugar content, and if it‟s greater than 22.5g per 100g or there is more than 27g in one portion, then the product is high in sugar. You also need to check the ingredients list to see whether sugars have been added to your food or if they are naturally occurring. The higher up the list the added sugars are, the more there are. Visit www.bhf.org.uk for further information.
3. Where does this sugar come from? The top sources of sugar in our diets are table sugar, preserves and soft drinks. As well as sugary fizzy drinks, flavoured waters and fruit juices can have sugar added to them. Confectionery (sweets and chocolates), biscuits, buns and cakes are also big contributors. See our infographic at: www.bhf.org.uk showing how much sugar is in different foods. 25. Call Direct Local on 0117 905 1154 * info@DirectLocalMagazine.com * www.DirectLocalMagazine.com
