One such happened to my family this weekend; my elder brother who has memory loss went missing for four hours. He and my niece were staying with me for the weekend, they come to Bristol several times a year.

Cuts to our Emergency Services Must STOP The sign of a civilised society is how it treats people in need and its vulnerable citizens. The recently-reported crises in Social Care which is “at breaking point” are a terrible indictment not only of the current Conservative Government but also the LibDem/Tory Coalition that preceded it. Cuts to the budgets of vital Emergency Services, Police, Fire and Ambulance have also been very severe. But notwithstanding the kindness and helpfulness of most Bristol people when they know you are going through a tough time, there are times when we all need the support of the Emergency services.

And here’s the scary bit, by definition, we can’t predict when we will need them. It’s not always the “big stuff”, traffic accidents, murder, burglary, heart attacks, strokes and the likes, but as any Police, Fire or Ambulance Officer will tell you, most of their time is taken up helping to resolve smaller, but serious family crises.

He went out to look at the Harbourside, we were a bit slow following after, sorting out bags and the like then – no Peter. Of course we went both ways around the water hunting frantically. After an hour with no luck, we called 999. The Police who responded couldn’t have been better. Having given his details over the phone, a Policewoman came within ¼ hour, reassured us and circulated his photograph off my niece’s phone. She told us CCTV had been alerted. To cut a long and anxious afternoon short, Peter was found walking near Temple Meads 3 hours later. He was totally lost and confused, poor man. The Police brought him home in their van and couldn’t have been nicer. And, for them it was an incident resolved satisfactorily. For us, a major relief. So THANK YOU so much Avon & Somerset Police; take a bow for superb service. And Government – STOP cutting our Emergency Services. No more reductions!

A few words from Reverend Helen Johnson Well the festivities are over, and it was great to see so many of you at St Mary’s over the Christmas period, attending many of the Christmas services. Now, as the New Year begins, we look forward to our new fitness regimes, our healthy eating habits returning and waistlines shrinking, or maybe not! We have an alternative New Year’s Eve Party on Friday 6th January at 7:30pm for you to enjoy and to start the New Year off with some fun, if all that healthy stuff sounds too much. If you are like me then the New Year can seem like hard work, and any New Year’s resolution often lasts only a few days before old habits return. So I have a different approach to the New Year that has lasted for the past 4 years. I take just one word and that becomes a focus for the year ahead. If you are interested you can read more about it here: http://getoneword.com/

Over the last year my one word has been strength – physical, emotional and spiritual strength, a reminder that when I am feeling burdened, God is my strength. I hope that you too might find your one word for this year, and that you might know hope, joy and peace in 2017. Some of us will be glad to say goodbye to 2016, it has been a difficult year for many. And so we look forward to a fresh start and all that this year brings. If you are having a spring clean then we would welcome any books, CDs or DVDs that you wish to put into our sale on Saturday 28th January at 10am, we would also love you to come buy lots too!

We would like to invite you all to join us to celebrate the anniversary of St Mary’s on Sunday 15th January when we hope to have a special guest speaker. It would be good to see as many of you as possible to join in this joyous occasion of all that St Mary’s has been, is, and will be to this community of Shirehampton, a symbol of God’s faithfulness over many years. And so may this year bring much joy, and may you all know God’s peace in 2017 Blessings Rev Helen

STUDY AT ASHTON GATE IN 2017-2018 Bristol City Community Trust (BCCT) is a registered sport and education charity whose focus is to engage and inspire young people, raising and celebrating education achievement. The Trust recognises the positive role it can play within the community, so in 2011 the Trust created a unique sporting academic programme with the aim of tackling the education inequality that exists within the city. Through its continual growth in strength and capacity, BCCT now has the appropriate sport structure to enable learners to develop life skills, maximise career choices and opportunities through carefully designed qualifications, support and activities, no matter what their academic or practical level. Such a structure sees the Trust attract and accept a diverse range of students on to any of six exciting courses:

 Level 2 Diploma in Football in Community Settings  Boys BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Futsal Pathway)  Girls BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Futsal Pathway)  LTA BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma In Sport (Tennis)  Foundation Degree In Community Football Coaching and Development  BA (Hons) Sports Business and Entrepreneurship With each course based at the newly-redeveloped Ashton Gate Stadium, where purpose-built classrooms and facilities are evident, the Trust’s culture of valuing education is bolstered by the learning environment. This assists in inspiring a positive attitude to drive education, personal and social progress, without the fear of failure. In addition to the purpose-built learning environment, the Trust’s ability, passion and drive to deliver the highest level of education to individuals wanting to enhance their quality of life, assists in positive levels of success attained through personalised learning. Furthermore, the Trust has employed six sports lecturers to match growing demand, allowing students to study in a stimulating environment where the ratio of staff to students is no larger than 1:20. In addition to the compulsory course requirements, the Trust provides students with a variety of extra-curricular activities, to further their academic progress and enhance desired life skills. All of the above factors contribute to what is a fantastic and unique educational experience for prospective students looking to kick-start their career within the sports industry. All of the education programmes have limited spaces, and they always prove to be extremely popular. If you could be interested in enrolling on to one of the courses, please email Emily.Cleaves@bcfc.co.uk or call 0117 963 0636 at the earliest opportunity.

Happy New Year So this is an ideal time, to reflect on the past year, and to make plans, or have ideas of what you would like to achieve over the next 12 months. This would probably have been the time when people would make the jams, and chutneys, and mended tools and clothing , and began to prepare for Spring. The next festival in the wheel of the year, is 2 February, and is known imbolic, or St Brigid and is the festival of heaarth and home. This is probably where spring cleaning comes from. With love, light and blessings, Marie

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club The Annual Presentation Dinner was once again at Shirehampton Park Golf Club, on Friday 25th November. Attended this year by over forty bowlers and families it was a very enjoyable evening. An excellent three course meal was followed by the presentation of trophies and medals to winners and runners up in this year’s club competitions, club league and club cup. Sunday December 4th saw more than thirty bowlers and their families once again attempting to throw the elusive six to start a game at the Annual Beetle Drive. Always guaranteed to raise frustration levels but equally to raise lots of laughter this year’s event was no exception. When the final beetle had been drawn at the end of the twelfth game, Eve Williams, having accrued most points, was declared this year’s Beetle Champion. The next social event will be on Sunday January 8th at the City and Port of Bristol Club starting at 7.30pm. There will be skittles, indoor putting and bingo for this, the first one of the new year and on Sunday February 5th --- it will be Quiz Night --thinking caps on.

There are two more indoor bowls matches to be enjoyed at the City and County Arena --- on February 4th when the opponents will be Severnvale and on March 4th --- against another local club side. Before that, over thirty bowlers, family and friends will be at the Toorak Hotel in Torquay for the Winter Bowling Break, at the end of January. With the close season nearing its mid-point it is time to look forward to season 2017. The Pre-Season Meeting, when annual fees are paid and fixture books distributed will be on Thursday March 16th, commencing at 7.45pm. A month after that the first game of the 2017 season will be played on Wednesday April 13th, at the all-weather green in Wrington. Playing on an outdoor artificial surface is always a challenge but one that bowlers rise to as part of being in the great outdoors and bowling again.

For further information about the Bowling Club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Darkness can dramatically alter driving ability Although there are fewer cars on the road, most fatal car accidents happen at night than any other time of the day. Our ability to see the road ahead is seriously impaired at night. Darkness can dramatically alter the driver's ability to cope with even the most normal driving conditions. As we are more vulnerable to dangerous road situations at night or in low visibility, we should double our preparedness, alertness and common sense when driving at night. Preventive maintenance is one of the best ways to protect ourselves from potentially dangerous situations on the road. Here are some of the most important points to consider when driving in the dark.

Your lights should be turned on during the night especially during periods of rain, snow, hail, sleet or fog. Make sure that your headlights are properly aimed. Have them checked by a professional to make sure that all the lights work.

Keep your headlights and your windshields clean. Remember that your lights are your only communication with other drivers on the road. Make sure that your windshield is clean, clear and unobstructed so that you can see what's ahead of you. One of the most hazardous habits that that drivers do during the night is "overdriving" .

The most important difference in night driving is visibility. At night, we become completely dependent on artificial sources of light to help us see and show us where we are going. Highway signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles are more difficult to see at night. Thus, lights, mirrors, and windows are doubly important at night. We should maintain clear, clean and scratch-free mirrors and windows. They should not be clouded by steam, frost, water droplets or tarnished by cracks or scratches.

Headlights as well as other lights, mirrors, windows, windshields all play an important role in keeping you safe when driving at night. Thus, these auto parts must be maintained in good condition or replaced as soon as they get damaged or defective.

Your entire car's lighting equipment must be in good condition to ensure safety when driving in the dark. Headlights, Tail Lights, Corner Lights, signal lamps, license plate lights and others all play a big role in your safety when driving at night. .

Seven ways to de-ice your car 1. The age-old advice is DO NOT pour boiling water on the windscreen. The sudden heat can make it crack. Try lukewarm water though. 2. The best way to gradually lose the frost is to use the de-mister to heat the car from the inside. It the car is covered in snow, this takes a few minutes, so factor it in to your journey. 3. To avoid ice in the morning altogether, try soaking a towel in saltwater solution and leave it on your windscreen overnight. 4. Only use your wipers to remove any excess from your windscreen after de-icing. Keep them switched off until all the ice has thawed otherwise they could break.

5. One of the best methods is to scrape off melting ice with a professional ice scraper and brush. The longer the ice scraper you have the better, so you can reach all the way across your windshield. Don't be tempted to use a credit card, CD case or anything else as you could scratch your windscreen 6. Some people suggest using vinegar on the ice as a home-made solution, but this may not be the best idea. Vinegar can damage the glass, paint, chrome or other exterior surfaces. There are also lots of different strengths and variants of vinegar so it's safest to avoid it altogether and use a professional de-icer. 7. Don't drive away until all the ice has gone, and until the windscreen has stopped steaming up. Driving with just a small window of visibility is tempting but dangerous

Set your new years resolutions Every year millions of people around the world stay up late on December 31st to usher in the new year. The New Year is a great time for reflection on the past year and what improvements you can strive for in the coming months. Resolutions are made around the globe, and then promptly broken. Though by the end of January most resolutions are forgotten, it doesn't have to be this way. One of the biggest reasons for these dropped resolutions is lack of a plan. Here are some tips to help you keep your New Year's resolutions. Make it specific. A popular resolution is to lose weight. Does it get more vague? This doesn't really give you something specific to aim for; try to pinpoint exactly what it is you want to do. If you start with losing weight, a more focused goal could be to lose 25 pounds by your birthday in July. Or to fit back into your pre-pregnancy jeans by the time your baby is a year old. Lose weight can also translate into a goal to eat healthier or exercise more, two other resolutions that may also need narrowing down. The point is, having a specific aim to reach by a certain time is more likely to be attained than a general wish. Make it realistic. Lofty goals are fine but moving to the moon might be a little out of reach. Unachievable plans are soon left by the wayside as the New Year's Eve high wears off and real life sets in. To stay with our lose weight example, make a goal to lose weight healthily, one to two pounds a week. This is not only doable, it's much healthier for your body than crash dieting to lose five or more pounds a week. Giving yourself realistic expectations increases the likelihood that you'll complete your goals. Make a plan. Without a plan, great ideas never get finished. Set aside some time to figure out what it is you need to do to accomplish your goals. Maybe you need to go for a walk every afternoon or join a gym. Or maybe you need to cut back to one soda a day and one dessert a week.

Make it fun. Who wants to keep a resolution that drains the life out of you? No one we know. So do something to add fun to your goal. Dancing burns a lot of calories just as well as running on a treadmill and yet is much more fun. Nowadays there are multiple video game systems that offer fitness programs you can complete without ever leaving your home. Along with keeping things fun, allow yourself room for error. Rigid plans aren't any fun either. So go ahead, have that piece of chocolate cake at your friend's birthday party. Just don't go overboard and don't do it every day.

These guidelines are here to help you keep your resolutions but the real work is up to you. Nail down a concrete, achievable goal for yourself and figure out how to get there. But don't forget to have a little fun on the way. Good luck and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Whatever your plan of action is, having one, and sticking to it, will be a great help on your journey. ¡

The Christmas season has gone and that means for many the dreaded tax return will be here just after the last of the Christmas turkey is gone. But here’s a few tips to keep it as stress free as possible. Don’t leave it until the last minute. As tempting as it is to keep putting it off, last minute tax returns may have errors (costing you money) and in the worst case a late return will land you with a £100 penalty even if you are only a day or two late. Make sure you have all your business bank and credit card statements to hand along with all business receipts and invoices. It will make it easier to add up all of your business expenses. Note for next year, keep them all in the same box! Remember, most business expenses are allowable if they are 100% business related. Even using your home as office. Call HMRC if you are unsure how to complete it. They will be able to guide you. If you can’t face another tax return or your business is complicated, hire an accountant. It may be cheaper than you think. Happy new Year from TSA Accountants!
