Ask the vet Time is running out to microchip your dog Don’t forget that by 6th April 2016 all dogs in England and Wales MUST be microchipped. The Compulsory Microchipping Act will be enforced by government officials such as police constables, local authorities and community support officers. If your dog is found to not have a microchip, you could face a fine of up to £500.

Every microchip has its own 15 digit number which holds all your pet's personal details, including name, address, contact numbers and any other information that may be relevant. These details are stored in an approved database so that your pet can be identified if they become lost. If your dog is already microchipped then make sure that your details are up to date. Incorrect data on your dog’s registration will put you at risk of a fine also. Check your pet’s details by contacting one of the UK microchip databases such as Petlog or Anibase. If you’re unsure which database your pet is registered with, look back at their microchip paper work.

It costs only £10 to microchip your dog at Highcroft so book an appointment now with one of our vets or nurses.

For more information about compulsory microchipping, please read our blog post ‘Compulsory microchipping – what do I need to know?’ on our website www.highcroftvet.co.uk. Alternatively,

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected into the loose skin of your pet's neck where it sits permanently.

Contact Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 and we will be happy to help

The microchipping process is quick and no more painful than a vaccination.

An overweight mum of one cures her back problem thanks to Slimming World Debbie Cassell was in severe pain in 2014 thanks to a crippling back problem, and ballooned to more than 14 stone. After piling on the pounds the 47year-old became too embarrassed to venture out with friends and started eating things that were easy to grab and her self-esteem plummeted. When she was finally fit enough to return to work, she realised she didn’t fit into any of her clothes anymore. So whilst travelling to work on the first morning she had to stop in the supermarket to buy a new pair of work trousers, she had hit an all-time low. As soon as she got into work she went straight onto the internet to find her local slimming world group, Debbie knew it was finally time to take action. She joined the same day and to date has lost 4 1/2 stone, and reached her target weight earlier in 2015. The mum-of-one joined in January just after Christmas and Slimming World has helped her completely change her eating habits. "I have tried every fad diet available. I would lose weight initially but I would just put it back on again. I needed to find a plan that would help me lose the weight and keep it off for life. I’d heard great things about Slimming World and thought I’d give it a go"

Going to group every week is like being part of a family for Debbie, the members are there for each other when they have good weeks and bad weeks and no-one ever passes judgement on one another. "This for me is why Slimming World is so special and the reason I got to my target so quickly". "With Slimming World I’ve discovered how to cook and eat delicious food that’s good for me too – and my family enjoy the same meals. Me and my husband love cooking together now. I’ve swapped takeaways for healthy home-cooked meals including spaghetti Bolognese and chilli con carne. I love being able to still enjoy the odd half pint of Badger beer and a crisps – with Slimming World syns you can. Nothing is banned – it’s magic! I no longer suffer with back pain or breathing problems. Slimming World has given me my life back. My health problems have disappeared, I no longer sit on the side lines while my family have fun without me, I can wear whatever I want; the list is endless. Which is why I have become a consultant myself so I can help others who feel the way I did, to get their life back too. My group is at 7.30pm on a Thursday at Broomhill Junior School on Allison Road, Brislignton.

"I will never forget the night I walked into my local Slimming World group, I was so worried I’d be judged and looked down on when I stepped onto the scales. I was so wrong! My consultant immediately put me at ease & I felt like I could do this. "I immediately started making little changes to family meals, like using passata instead of pasta sauce or low fat mince instead of regular mince. I’d whip up a carbonara in 10 minutes – that’s quicker than waiting for a takeaway! "I started increasing my activity by walking and slowly I built this up to running. I organised our group Race for Life this year and it was so rewarding crossing the finishing line with all the other members. In the past I’d make any excuses not to go out – now even if it’s raining I just say "Let’s get our wellies on!".

Total PC Support From Martin Don’t get trapped in the Clouds You may have been lucky enough to get a new PC or laptop for Christmas, freeing you up from that dusty old box which you were ready to exile to the landfill. With all that shiny new gear, you'll be speeding ahead with everything from gaming to everyday office work! But you might also be running straight into a trap‌

New subscriptions All new off-the-shelf computers come with stuff known variously as trialware, junkware, and no doubt worse names. This is the Norton Antivirus 60 day trial, the 'PC Backup' program which nags you, and the 'HP Driver Update' program for those of us with that brand of laptop. They want your money. You're supposed to sign up because they're on your computer already. You just need to put in your credit card details and never think about it again.

Use these recommended titles These are my recommended titles for the most common categories: Antivirus: Avoid McAfee at all costs. If you've got a Norton trial and it's going well, that's not a bad choice. Otherwise I'd recommend Kaspersky Internet Security or Avast Free Antivirus. Backup: My favourite two titles are SpiderOak cloud backup and EaseUS Todo Backup Free. Driver Updates and Cleaners: You can generally ignore these altogether, but if you insist on keeping one to hand, try CCleaner for regular use, SlimDrivers for driver updates, or System Mechanic for an all-round toolkit. The moral of the story is: know what goes on your PC, be the one who makes the decisions about it, and keep it running in ship shape form!

Don't fall for it There are so many reasons why you should make that little bit of effort. It'll pay back in a big way! 1.

Know Your Computer: you should always make the decision about what goes on your hard drive, not some other company.

2.

Free alternatives: these trials aren't on your computer because they've been carefully chosen. Make an informed decision, and perhaps use one of the many free programs that are out there.

3.

They may be a waste of money for you: would you have paid for that PC backup software if it wasn't put in front of you? Perhaps you already have a decent computer backup technique. There's no need to change or dump it just because someone puts something different in front of you.

Councillors Surgery Bristol Traffic - One Size doesn’t fix all I received several very interesting comments in response to last month’s topic in DirectLocal;”Welcome to Brislington ‘Island’, commenting on the large and uncoordinated number of roadworks blocking off Brislington from the rest of Bristol and the extra time it causes people getting to and from work. The majority liked my notion about Brislington turning into an island, but wish it could be better planned, not simply caused by the bridges under repair! Seriously though, wherever you wish to go in Bristol, and by whatever transport method, you face delays and congestion. Despite the funding allocated by the current Mayor, we are not forsaking our cars and getting on our bikes.

We all know that Bristol roads and transport infrastructure is inadequate. But there seems to be no transport vision for Bristol, the regional capital of the South West. Apart from Metrobust, there only seems to be tinkering around the edges of the problem with RPZs, 20 mph, a cycle lane here, a cycle lane there going nowhere. I do welcome the new hybrid electric buses though – let’s have more of them please and less diesel pollution . And when anyone tries to suggest new ideas, the bleat that “we have no money” goes up. Bristol is the only one of the core cities that pays into the Treasury, so I think we should get more out than Metrobus will offer. We keep being told how much it will change things when completed, but I for one am already fed up by the hold-ups around the Centre,

Next we have the impact on the M32 to look forward to. When it is done, it ought to make a substantial difference to getting across the city from South Bristol to the Northern fringe. I hope so, or all that money that it is costing will be in vain. Metrobus won’t help the East of the City, nor the West or North West. The solution for the West and North West is clearly visible on the map; the Henbury rail loop. There is cross-party support for it, but the undemocratic and unelected West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) kicked it into the long grass, ignoring the wishes of the overwhelming majority of City Councillors. Still, if they can’t set up a platform next to the Portway Park and Ride, how could they be trusted with a far larger project?

The roads in the East of the city are equally congested. But yet again, no solution is proposed. So here is mine; a Light Railway, similar to the DLR – Docklands Light Railway in East London. Its purpose is simply to move people into and out of the city. It costs a lot less than a full blown railway as is being planned by Network Rail up to Parkway through Bishopston, Horfield and Lockleaze, welcome though that will be. It is more flexible and could be added to in stages. It is reliable and not held up by traffic, sometimes running alongside or above existing roads as it does not have heavy loads to carry. There is a former railway line from Temple Meads via Brislington to Whitchurch that it could follow. Why should a one size fits all type of transport be considered for Bristol City? As long as we the citizens of Bristol could have reliable methods of getting into and out of the city centre, a mix of Metrobus, rail and light rail might get more of us out of our cars. Eileen Means Labour Councillor Brislington West.

This is a hell of a time to be alive if like me, you’re geek. We’ve got comic books turning into films, virtual reality quickly becoming a very real, very awesome thing, and perhaps most importantly, Bristol is finally getting its very own comic-con! So without further ado, lets dive right in! Welcome to February, home of Valentine’s Day and even more importantly than that (shhh… Don’t tell my wife) Deadpool is being released this month! Deadpool tells the story of a foul-mouthed, fourth-wall-breaking mercenary with a mouth who’s out to save the love of his life (played by the wonderful Morena Baccarin). Ryan Reynolds takes on the role of Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool, and he seems to do so with sheer joy of a child acting out his favourite character on the playground. I cannot wait ti see this movie, and you shouldn’t either.

Moving on to something perhaps more geeky and certainly much more expensive, let’s talk about virtual reality. More specifically, let’s talk about OCULUS IS THE LONG-AWAITED, Facebook-owned virtual reality system that lets you play games and ‘experiences’ in VR. And they’ve just announced their prices. $599. Five hundred and ninety nine dollars. That’s about £420. add to that the £1,000 PC you need to run it, and you’ve got a very expensive purchase to make. Luckily for us PS4 owners, Sony has a rival VR system being released later this year, and pricing is estimated at $400. Take that, Facebook. Now, lets get down to the fun stuff. Comic-cons are always a great experience if you’re a film, TV, videogame or comic book fan. A huge room filled with thousands of like minded people, all there for exactly the same reason you—to spend a couple of days in complete nerd-induced ecstasy. There are a huge selection of exhibitors selling all kinds of film memorabilia, and even demonstrations and workshops, so if you've ever wanted to work in the film industry, this could be an awesome place to get started. Finally, Bristol is getting its own con, and it’s happening in a mere 2 months! Optimus Bristol Comic-Con will take over the Exhibition & Conference Centre at UWE on the 9th &10th April this year and its going to be incredible! In attendance will be the starts of The Last Of Us and Dragonball-z. not to mention the 1989 Batmobile and Back To The Future’s DeLorean! There are more guests to be announced, and the only way to secure your ticket is to book now at optimusconvention.com. Mine’s already in the bag, will I see you there?

Don’t forget to check out my podcast over at soundcloud.comkencoAndMac for all the latest geek news and I’ll be back next month - same Bat-time, same Bat channel!
