What is the Government's response to this looming crisis? No mention in the recent Autumn statement of extra money for the NHS or our social care system, instead the Government want local Council Tax payers to foot the bill for this massive shortfall in funding.
GOVERNMENT
A perfect storm is brewing They say the mark of a civilised society is how we treat our elderly and infirm. We know locally that a GP surgery is closing in Knowle and the patients are having to make alternative arrangements. We cannot go on placing a sticking plaster over our Health and Social Care system, with people living longer and advances in medicine. We need a fresh look at the future and the finances of our much loved NHS and the Social Care system. This is far too big and important to be left to struggling local Councils and requires both Parliament and the Government to get a grip.
Whether they transferred to another under pressure GP surgery in South Bristol or maybe just join the large ranks of our 'walking wounded' at our A&E departments the system is at breaking point. Patients are having to wait weeks for GP appointments and sit a lot longer in our A&E departments than the Government’s imposed four hour wait target. All our local Hospitals are overspent and do not have enough beds for patients to use. There is a lack of community beds to release patients into so they are blocking much needed beds for the next lot of inpatients waiting for operations, etc. Experts say that older people prefer to stay in their own homes and that they are happier and healthier for longer, yet our local Council has run out of money and can only really offer support for the most acute cases.
There is a perfect storm brewing on this and affects us all. Article by Councillor Jos Clark Liberal Democrat Brislington West Ward

One such happened to my family this weekend; my elder brother who has memory loss went missing for four hours. He and my niece were staying with me for the weekend, they come to Bristol several times a year.
Cuts to our Emergency Services Must STOP The sign of a civilised society is how it treats people in need and its vulnerable citizens. The recently-reported crises in Social Care which is “at breaking point” are a terrible indictment not only of the current Conservative Government but also the LibDem/Tory Coalition that preceded it. Cuts to the budgets of vital Emergency Services, Police, Fire and Ambulance have also been very severe. But notwithstanding the kindness and helpfulness of most Bristol people when they know you are going through a tough time, there are times when we all need the support of the Emergency services.
And here’s the scary bit, by definition, we can’t predict when we will need them. It’s not always the “big stuff”, traffic accidents, murder, burglary, heart attacks, strokes and the likes, but as any Police, Fire or Ambulance Officer will tell you, most of their time is taken up helping to resolve smaller, but serious family crises.
He went out to look at the Harbourside, we were a bit slow following after, sorting out bags and the like then – no Peter. Of course we went both ways around the water hunting frantically. After an hour with no luck, we called 999. The Police who responded couldn’t have been better. Having given his details over the phone, a Policewoman came within ¼ hour, reassured us and circulated his photograph off my niece’s phone. She told us CCTV had been alerted. To cut a long and anxious afternoon short, Peter was found walking near Temple Meads 3 hours later. He was totally lost and confused, poor man. The Police brought him home in their van and couldn’t have been nicer. And, for them it was an incident resolved satisfactorily. For us, a major relief. So THANK YOU so much Avon & Somerset Police; take a bow for superb service. And Government – STOP cutting our Emergency Services. No more reductions!

Antifreeze poisoning in pets It’s been a relatively mild winter so far but we’d still like to remind you of the potential dangers of antifreeze poisoning. Antifreeze poisoning typically happens when the liquid drips from a car’s radiator, creating puddles on driveways and roads, or mixing with existing water around the car. Antifreeze contains a substance called ethylene glycol which is sweet to taste and very appealing to animals. Ingesting even very small amounts of antifreeze can make pets critically ill. Poisoning in cats and dogs acts fast and should be treated urgently. Signs include: 0-12 hours – depression, unsteadiness, lack of appetite, vomiting, increased drinking and urination. Signs are similar to ‘drunkenness’ ·
12-24 hours – increased heart rate and respiratory rate
·
24-72 hours – the kidneys may now begin to fail; symptoms include severe depression, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and eventually death
Antifreeze poisoning can be avoided by taking even a few precautions such as: keeping antifreeze containers firmly closed and kept completely out of reach, and making sure all antifreeze containers are properly disposed of (and still tightly closed). If you notice or suspect a spillage that could potentially contain antifreeze, clear it up immediately and check your car regularly for leaks. As you may be aware, there have been reports in the local news of suspected antifreeze poisonings in areas such as Blaise Castle and Victoria Park in Bristol. Although we cannot confirm these occurrences, we still would advise pet owners to vigilant in recognising the above symptoms. If you suspect that your pet has antifreeze poisoning, call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 9715115 immediately. If it happens outside of usual opening hours, Highcroft’s Veterinary Hospital in Whitchurch has a vet on-site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so that any emergencies can be treated straight away.

NEW CONSULTANT FOR A NEW YEAR Chantelle first joined Slimming World just after her 20th birthday. Having struggled with her weight throughout her teenage years Chantelle had tried all sorts of quick fix diets, but inevitably gave up having found them expensive, tasteless or just not compatible with her life. Chantelle says 'when my consultant first talked me through how to food optimise it blew my mind I thought there must be some hidden secret, I just couldn't see how you could enjoy rice , pasta , potatoes and still lose weight'. Chantelle lost 4.5lb in her first week, and with each passing week as Chantelle lost more weight her confidence soared. She gained a new job, a social life with friends and the courage to leave an unhappy relationship . Chantelle says ' I loved going to group every week with my friend, it became a really important part of our week, we'd leave group motivated with lots of new recipe ideas and go shopping so we were prepared for the week, I absolutely loved the fact that I was eating healthily, losing weight but most importantly enjoying life as a 20 year old should '
BEFORE
Chantelle now has a little boy of 3, and is still as passionate about food optimising, she says ' I've developed such a passion for cooking, and what's great is food optimising still fits into my life, with my husband and little boy both enjoying the meals I cook, we love the Fakeaway Book I bought in group, and the fact that we can still enjoy curries , pizzas, burger and chips without the guilt is amazing' Having lost 3stone Chantelle now wants to share her passion for food optimising to help others find the happiness she has. Chantelle will be opening a new group at Bridge Farm Primary school, Whitchurch at 7.30pm on Thursday January 19th. First and foremost, you have to drive slowly and well below speed limits. Speed limits should be obeyed at all times, but it's even more important when driving on icy roads.
Winter driving tips for snow and ice Driving a motor vehicle can be a pretty complicated thing even in the best weather conditions, and you must have the skills and be alert and focused on the road at all times. Driving in winter, on icy roads is even more difficult and complicated. You need to be extra careful and know how to handle steering, braking, accelerating, and turning, among other things. Plus, you have to equip your car with the right set of tyres, and snow chains. If you don't want to have troubles on an icy road, one thing that can help you with that is making sure to hit the road early and give yourself enough time to get to your destination, so that you don't have to drive too fast, which is very dangerous in such conditions.
Also, you should avoid getting too close to the vehicles in front of you, so that you can leave enough space for braking and avoiding a collision in case the car ahead of you stops suddenly. Skidding is one of the most common issues that occur when driving in winter. You can avoid skidding if you don't accelerate or brake too hard, and if you don't make too sharp or sudden movements with the steering wheel. Going into corners on icy roads is another huge concern. What you should do is start slowing down way before you get to the corner, otherwise you'll have to hit the brakes hard, and that's how skidding occurs. Also, change gears before you start turning, and then slowly accelerate once you get into the corner. Stay safe this winter on the roads..

Lexus Still Number One for Reliability Top-rated manufacturer in 2017 Consumer Reports survey The rigorous, independent scrutiny of more than half a million vehicles has confirmed that Lexus remains the most reliable car manufacturer in the latest annual report by leading watchdog organisation Consumer Reports.
Facing an even tougher examination this year, Lexus emerged the clear leader with an 86 per cent reliability score, ahead of its sister brand Toyota with 78 per cent, mirroring the standings they achieved in the American study last year. Announcing the results, Consumer Reports said Lexus’s sustained success was “the least surprising news” and commended both brands for the “tried and true methods” they use to build their cars and their “conservative, evolutionary approach”. The strength-in-depth of Lexus quality is also reflected in three of its models featuring in Consumer Reports’ list of the 10 most reliable models: the GS saloon, CT 200h hatchback and the American market GX SUV. Consumer Reports compiled its survey by researching the experiences of its digital and print subscribers with cars built during the past 16 years, taking into account the many different things that can go wrong or cause annoyance, from squeaks and loose trim to major warranty repairs. The results allowed the organisation to predict the reliability performance of models that are in showrooms now, based on their manufacturers’ track record during the past three years.

Seven ways to de-ice your car 1. The age-old advice is DO NOT pour boiling water on the windscreen. The sudden heat can make it crack. Try lukewarm water though. 2. The best way to gradually lose the frost is to use the de-mister to heat the car from the inside. It the car is covered in snow, this takes a few minutes, so factor it in to your journey. 3. To avoid ice in the morning altogether, try soaking a towel in saltwater solution and leave it on your windscreen overnight. 4. Only use your wipers to remove any excess from your windscreen after de-icing. Keep them switched off until all the ice has thawed otherwise they could break.
5. One of the best methods is to scrape off melting ice with a professional ice scraper and brush. The longer the ice scraper you have the better, so you can reach all the way across your windshield. Don't be tempted to use a credit card, CD case or anything else as you could scratch your windscreen 6. Some people suggest using vinegar on the ice as a home-made solution, but this may not be the best idea. Vinegar can damage the glass, paint, chrome or other exterior surfaces. There are also lots of different strengths and variants of vinegar so it's safest to avoid it altogether and use a professional de-icer. 7. Don't drive away until all the ice has gone, and until the windscreen has stopped steaming up. Driving with just a small window of visibility is tempting but dangerous

Set your new years resolutions Every year millions of people around the world stay up late on December 31st to usher in the new year. The New Year is a great time for reflection on the past year and what improvements you can strive for in the coming months. Resolutions are made around the globe, and then promptly broken. Though by the end of January most resolutions are forgotten, it doesn't have to be this way. One of the biggest reasons for these dropped resolutions is lack of a plan. Here are some tips to help you keep your New Year's resolutions. Make it specific. A popular resolution is to lose weight. Does it get more vague? This doesn't really give you something specific to aim for; try to pinpoint exactly what it is you want to do. If you start with losing weight, a more focused goal could be to lose 25 pounds by your birthday in July. Or to fit back into your pre-pregnancy jeans by the time your baby is a year old. Lose weight can also translate into a goal to eat healthier or exercise more, two other resolutions that may also need narrowing down. The point is, having a specific aim to reach by a certain time is more likely to be attained than a general wish. Make it realistic. Lofty goals are fine but moving to the moon might be a little out of reach. Unachievable plans are soon left by the wayside as the New Year's Eve high wears off and real life sets in. To stay with our lose weight example, make a goal to lose weight healthily, one to two pounds a week. This is not only doable, it's much healthier for your body than crash dieting to lose five or more pounds a week. Giving yourself realistic expectations increases the likelihood that you'll complete your goals.
Make it fun. Who wants to keep a resolution that drains the life out of you? No one we know. So do something to add fun to your goal. Dancing burns a lot of calories just as well as running on a treadmill and yet is much more fun. Nowadays there are multiple video game systems that offer fitness programs you can complete without ever leaving your home. Along with keeping things fun, allow yourself room for error. Rigid plans aren't any fun either. So go ahead, have that piece of chocolate cake at your friend's birthday party. Just don't go overboard and don't do it every day.
These guidelines are here to help you keep your resolutions but the real work is up to you. Nail down a concrete , achievable goal for yourself and figure out how to get there. But don't forget to have a little fun on the way. Good luck and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Make a plan. Without a plan, great ideas never get finished. Set aside some time to figure out what it is you need to do to accomplish your goals. Maybe you need to go for a walk every afternoon or join a gym. Or maybe you need to cut back to one soda a day and one dessert a week. Whatever your plan of action is, having one, and sticking to it, will be a great help on your journey. ¡

Happy New Year So this is an ideal time, to reflect on the past year, and to make plans, or have ideas of what you would like to achieve over the next 12 months. This would probably have been the time when people would make the jams, and chutneys, and mended tools and clothing , and began to prepare for Spring. The next festival in the wheel of the year, is 2 February, and is known imbolic, or St Brigid and is the festival of heaarth and home. This is probably where spring cleaning comes from. With love, light and blessings, Marie

We are not a large corporate firm and we believe that our charges are more affordable than many of our competitors, our service more personal and our style more approachable. We hope you will agree! The majority of our new clients come to us by recommendation. We pride ourselves on our good communication and approachability; the standard of service we have always set ourselves is now formulated in the following charter.
