Families arriving at the party were handed a “Shirehampton Park Treasure Trail”, a fun competition organised by the Hall Treasurer, Janet Thomas, to whom we are very grateful. Many thanks also to Grant Watkins, Scout Leader of 191st Shirehampton, for organising “Splat the Rat”, and to Rose Watkins for organising the Ice Cream Van, which served delicious ice cream and lollies which were in demand as the afternoon became hotter! The City with the three mayors A long, long time ago in a city in the far, far west of the country that was to become England, the people decided that they needed a Mayor and Councillors to look after things and to represent them to the rich nobility to whom they paid taxes. This worked reasonably well for several centuries despite civil war, rebellions and riots when the populace of the city made their feelings known against an unpopular Council. Indeed it worked so well that the Queen-Empress in the 19th Century awarded the Mayor of the City the title of 'Lord Mayor' which sounds very grand. (It cost nothing and allowed everyone to have a good party). This Lord Mayor wears a long robe and feathers in his hat.

Unfortunately, the new powers weren't forthcoming from the capital city, that liked keeping a grip of things out in the sticks, but being short of ideas, the Conservative Government decided that a new post to be called a "Metro Mayor" would be a good idea. By this time, the population weren't at all keen so lots of money in future was promised if the new Mayor was agreed. The City Council was swayed towards this Metro Mayor post.  But no-one has asked the citizens yet: what will you do with 3 Mayors?  Liverpool has 2 cathedrals and "if you want one, we have one to spare"

Then in the 21st Century along came a Coalition Government in London that, like the QueenEmpress wanted to be seen to be doing something radical, so they proposed new powers to cities that voted for a new kind of mayor called a City Mayor. Most of the population said "we don't see the point" and voted against except for our city, now called Bristol.

 Bristol will have 3 Mayors, three tiers of 'governance'. Can we have some sanity back please? By Eileen Means

A teensy tiny proportion of the electorate of the city decided that two Mayors would give it more importance. The newest Mayor wouldn't wear a robe or feathers in his hat though.

Lots going on at St Mary’s Church this month! This month has seen some really good news at St Mary’s. After a long period without a Priest-in-Charge, the churchwardens were delighted to announce on Sunday 10th July that the Rev Helen Johnson had accepted the bishop’s offer to be appointed as the next vicar of Shirehampton subject to checks and other formalities. Helen has to give appropriate notices etc but we will look forward to her licensing later in the year.

I am currently based at St Paul’s, Southville and St Augustine’s, Whitchurch as their curate. I enjoy reading, walking the dog (Percy), creative writing and spending time with friends and family. I am really excited to have been appointed to Shirehampton and look forward to getting to know you all in the coming months ahead. Every blessing, Helen.” We, too, look forward to getting to know Helen and her family and welcoming them to St Mary’s.

The selection process culminated in two full days in the parish for the candidates. A tour of the parish and meetings with the leadership team and the Parochial Church Council occupied the first day. On the second, candidates delivered a ten minute presentation to the selection panel followed by formal interview.

In the meantime things continue busily as ever. On Saturday 20th August we are looking forward to a concert by Mynyddislwyn Male Voice Choir. Tickets for this are £10 and can be obtained from the church office (0117 9077026). We will give you a buffet and glass of wine.

Here is her letter of introduction for the whole parish which was read to the congregation that Sunday. “I’m married to Chris, with two children William, 14 and Emily, 11. I was born and bred in Bristol and grew up around Kingswood and Hanham. I was a nurse for 15 years at Southmead Hospital and in various community roles, before being called into full-time ministry.

On Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August, as is our usual procedure, we shall be opening the church for lunches and cream teas at reasonable prices – 12 noon – 5pm. Do come along and help us raise funds for our work within the community. September is always the month for our Harvest Appeal, the charity has yet to be decided. There are always lots of events throughout the month so do keep an eye on our notice board outside church or our website www.stmarys.2day.ws where all the information will be displayed. Our Patronal Festival including our Flower Festival with the theme ‘A Grand Day Out’ was very special and our fayre raised £1575 – thanks to all who were able to support this. If you like preserves there is lots of home-made jam, marmalade and chutney available in church, just £1.30 a jar. We are open Monday to Friday (Funerals permitting) from 10am -12 noon and 2pm5pm if you fancy buying some or if you want to pop in for a coffee, a quiet time, to remember someone or just a chat. There’s always a warm welcome. The picture shows one of our flower displays – A day in darkest Peru – with, of course, Paddington! More next month!

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club Monday July 25th saw the arrival of bowlers from the Gloucestershire and Somerset Associations at the City and Port of Bristol Club Green to compete for the Small Cup. This was the 60th time that this trophy had been played for ---- the first occasion being at Henleaze in 1957.

There has been some success in in County Competitions for City and Port of Bristol bowlers recently. Bill Hatherall and Charlie Maby, finalists in 2015, have progressed to the second round of the pairs competition by beating Bob Bradshaw and Tom Troop at Ardagh. Alan Price beat David Quick of Whitehall in the preliminary round of the singles competition, at Eastville Park, the home of Whitehall Bowling Club. Club Competitions have progressed to the semi-final stage now and one, the League Knockout competition has reached the point where this year’s finalists are known ---- Marvels --- last year’s winners will play AN Other.

Once the formality of Host President David Hinksman handing the green over to Gloucestershire President Roy Walker had been completed play got underway on all six rinks and some very keen and competitive bowling followed. At the end of what was a very enjoyable afternoon Somerset emerged as winners by 129-109 shots to bring them to within two of Gloucestershire in terms of games won over the years. An excellent two course meal with drinks and lively conversation followed the game. Presentations, including that of the Small Cup were made by the respective County Presidents to conclude a very successful afternoon of bowling.

The season is now into its final two months but there is plenty of bowling still to be played --- many friendly games, club league and the conclusion of both Ladies and Men’s Bristol and District League during August. But --- it’s not too late to come along and give bowling a try. Julie Looker is the latest bowls tryer and hopefully new member. Julie came along on Tuesday evenings, has taken well to bowling and will hopefully be enjoying playing for the club in the near future. So --- why not come along and see if bowling is for you? Call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713 if you would like to give bowling a try on a Tuesday evening from 5.30. There is no charge, all equipment is supplied and experienced bowlers on hand for help and advice.

Hosting a county game is a very special occasion and another special occasion took place on Wednesday July 6th when the visitors were Bristol Blind and their supporters. Supported by sighted bowlers both ladies and gentlemen displayed great skill and the enjoyment gained from being on the green and bowling was clear for all to see. Using strings that stretched from one end of the green to the other and listening to instructions from the sighted skip ---- these based on the points of the clock face ---- blind and partially sighted bowlers are able to bowl to a very good standard.

www.cityandportbristolbowls.org For further information please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713. 10. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline.com

The green Toyota Prius gets the third spot with its spacious cabin and big boot. It’s got excellent fuel economy and low emission, which makes up for the rather disappointing interior.

Top 5 Hatchbacks to consider when looking for a family car If you’re in the market for a new family hatchback below is a rundown on the top five picked by 1st Gear. Top of the picks is the Volkswagen Golf hatchback, which is described by the use of words like ‘refined’, ‘comfortable’ and ‘fun’. As most Volkswagen cars it’s reliable and well built and holds it value well, it comes with an array of safety kit as standard and both looks and feels good to drive. It’s only let down by its rather conservative appearance.

In at number two comes the Skoda Octavia, which has more space than the VW Golf and offers great value for money. But the models on the lower end

Forth in the top five is the Hyundai i30, which is the cheapest of the top five cars and also comes with a great warranty package. It’s described as a solid car but a bit bland.

Last of the top five cars is the Mazda 3, which is described, as funky and fun with good resale value.

So if you’re in the market for a new family hatchback, you probably won’t go wrong by checking out one of the above

Gromit comes home! The Grand Appeal’s exciting ‘Gromit Unleashed’ Homecoming exhibition is now open! 18 original sculptures from the hugely successful ‘Gromit Unleashed’ trail in Bristol in 2013 have gone on show at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway until 4 September, all to raise funds for The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. This is the first time fans have had the opportunity to see the much-loved sculptures since the trail ended. The line-up includes a host of fan favourites and celebrity designs, as well as two extra-special sculptures: ‘Gromit Lightyear’ by Pixar Animations and ‘Newshound’ by Wallace & Gromit’s creator, Nick Park. Designed and painted at Pixar’s studios in California, ‘Gromit Lightyear’ was the highest-selling sculpture at the trail’s grand charity auction, raising £65,000. Nick Park’s ‘Newshound’ was the only sculpture to also feature Wallace alongside his trusty canine sidekick Gromit, and raised £50,000 at auction.

Other celebrity sculptures include ‘Poetry in Motion’ by Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley, ‘Oops A Daisy’ by TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin and ‘Butterfly’ by acclaimed milliner Philip Treacy MBE. The exhibition runs from 25 July until 4th September at The Grand Appeal’s shop at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. It is free to enter, with a suggested entry donation of £2 to The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. All funds raised will support The Grand Appeal’s £1.5million Home from Home Appeal to fund new accommodation for families of patients at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Lauren Howard, project manager, The Grand Appeal, said, “We’re so excited that our fantastic new ‘Gromit Unleashed’ exhibition is now open! We hope Gromit fans old and new enjoy this chance to be reunited with their favourite designs, and relive their own special memories of the trail.

We would also like to thank all the sculptures’ owners for so generously donating their Gromit back to us for the next six weeks, for fans to enjoy. All donations at the exhibition will help us towards our £1.5million target to fund new family accommodation at Bristol Children’s Hospital, to give families from across the South West and beyond a home from home to stay in while their child undergoes lifesaving treatment.” The exhibition is open from 9.30am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm on Saturday and 10.30am to 5pm on Sunday. ‘Gromit Unleashed’ attracted 1.2million visitors to Bristol from across the UK and around the world, with the 80 sculptures raising £2.3million at auction for The Grand Appeal. Sales of The Grand Appeal’s collectable ‘Gromit Unleashed’ figurines and other merchandise have seen this rise to £5million to date. ‘Gromit Unleashed’ merchandise and figurines are also available to purchase online, from www.wallaceandgromitcharityshop.org.uk.
