Shirehampton Public Hall June Newsletter Welcome to another edition of the Public Hall Newsletter! We are fast approaching the June half term, so don’t forget to come along to the Hall and join in with some of our many activities! Our list of weekly events is attached to this newsletter, so no excuses for missing your favourite class!

Our Pillowlace Club would love some new members. Pillowlace is a wonderful art, and very relaxing, so whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, come along from 7pm on Fridays and join in with something different and make new friends!

The Hall is very proud to announce that it is now the temporary home to the wonderful Firebird Theatre Group. Their normal home is the Bristol Old Vic, however as many of you will know this is undergoing a major refurbishment, therefore the Firebird Theatre have chosen the Hall as their meeting place for the next couple of years or so. But with this wonderful news there is also some very sad news.

Coming up later in the year please look out for the very entertaining Pro Evo Wrestling Company, who will be holding an event with all their wrestling stars at the Hall on Saturday 25th September – keep your eyes peeled for details of how to obtain tickets!

The wonderful and much loved Toddler Group will be packing up its toys for the very last time on 6th July. Mary Hayball, the organiser, has successfully run this group for many years, but sadly can find no willing volunteer to take the reins. On behalf of all the mums and tots who have benefitted from this group over the years the Hall Trustees and Manager would like to thank Mary for her dedication and hard work, and wish her a very happy retirement. This will leave a gap on a Wednesday morning during term time, so if any other group is looking for a home please ring the Hall Manager to discuss using this slot. Other activities in the Hall have attracted new members, but more are always welcome! Why not try Zumba!! Our inspirational new teacher, Elaine, is on hand to encourage you all the way at 6pm on Thursday evenings. Do come along and join her for some energetic fun – no experience necessary! Puppy Training is also proving very popular, and is now available on two evenings per week! See our Facebook page or contact Ellie Turner at Furry Frolics for more details. Our Dance teacher, Zoe, is also happy to accept new members for her two classes on a Tuesday evening, so if you would like to take a relaxed approach to contemporary dance please come along between 6-7pm for children, 7-8pm adults and teens each Tuesday evening.

The Hall Trustees are hosting a Family Picnic on Sunday 3rd July in the afternoon. The intention is to meet at the picnic area near the War Memorial on the Shirehampton Road, opposite the Golf Course for an afternoon of community fun! If the weather is bad the event will be held at the Hall. Come along and make new friends and join in the fun – and bring a picnic, of course! The Hall Trustees welcome new Trustees or anyone with an interest in starting new events to come along and visit us. The Hall AGM will take place on Tuesday 19th July at 7.15pm in the Hall and the public is welcome to attend. Shirehampton Public Hall is now on Facebook, so please “like” us and follow all our up and coming events on there. The Public Hall has many events and regular activities, so please visit our website at www.shirepubhall.org.uk for further details, check out our noticeboard , email bookings@shirepubhall.org.uk or telephone 0117 9829963.

Shirehampton Public Hall June Activities

Summer Solstice The Summer Solstice and winter solstice fall around the 21st of June and December. This year Summer Solstice is on the 20th of June. This is also known as the longest day, shortest night and has been celebrated for centuries, and even now people still go to sacred places such as Stonehenge, Avebury or a place that is special to them to greet the Sun at this time of year, to honour Nature and the strength of the Summer. Some see this as the time when the Oak King and the Holly King go to battle. Summer Solstice is when the Holly King will win, and during his reign daylight will decrease until the next battle which will be at the Winter Solstice. Light and Solstice Blessings Marie

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB In a season that runs from April to October and with over sixty mixed friendly games planned there are some that stand out as special. One such game was played on May 24th when Milford Haven were the visitors. This game was played as a result of an invitation to come and play us, made last summer when the club was on tour in West Wales.

Tuesday evening sessions for new bowlers to come along and give bowling a try as well as existing bowlers practicing their skills, will continue through the season most weeks from 5.30pm. A number of prospective new bowlers have already bowled their first woods and it is hoped that many more will do so as the season progresses.

Invitations are frequently made but rarely taken up --- this was the exception. Almost thirty bowlers and their families made the long trip from Milford Haven to play a very enjoyable twenty one end game on six rinks in glorious sunny weather. City and Port were victorious in winning the game but, on these occasions the result is much less important than the pleasure of being on the green and all that bowling means to those taking part.

On June 18th there is an afternoon of fun bowling for people who have not bowled before to form rinks ( four bowlers) and, after some instruction take part in a game which will have a prize and then finish the afternoon with a barbecue. It is hoped to attract a number of rinks from local businesses and organistions to take part in what will be a fun and enjoyable day. Frank Jordan has now made his bowling debut, playing in several mixed friendly games along with returning bowler Matthew Price. The afternoon ended with a buffet, a drink and time to renew acquaintances and exchange tales of bowling with likeminded people. Before leaving an invitation was extended to The City and Port of Bristol to return the fixture in Milford Haven next season.

Shirley Callaghan has joined the club, practiced regularly on Tuesdays and will soon be playing friendly games.

The next special game will be on Sunday 19th June when the City and Port of Bristol visit The Bohemian Island in Reading for the first time.

Lavers take off in Bristol Arnold Laver,a long established family business specialising in timber and timber based products, are proud to announce that their new Bristol Depot is now operational. Located in Bristol, within the site boundary of Filton Airfield, this former aircraft production facility, where Concorde and the Brabazon were manufactured, provides an ideal location for distributing timber and timber-based products into the South-West of the Country. The business has been delivering materials into the South West, via their Reading and Birmingham Depots, for quite some time now, but the introduction of this new dedicated facility will mean that we can offer a next-day service to existing and new customers that are either based locally, or working in the area. This new distribution Depot represents a significant investment and helps to further enhance their reputation as one of the leading timber specialists in the UK. Continuing the principal of having significant stocks of materials at regional distribution locations across the country, backed up by product experts who are both knowledgeable and helpful.

Andrew Laver, Group Managing Director commented ‘We are absolutely delighted to have opened this new facility, which will further improve the service that we can offer our customers in the region. We are confident that our ethos of providing a large stock-holding, together with a quick and efficient delivery service, via our own fleet of vehicles, will help our customers deliver their projects on-time and in-full. It is also appropriate that the Depot is based within a former aircraft hangar, when my grandfather Arnold Laver was a pilot, who used his gratuity from the Royal Flying Corps, to establish this business in 1920’.Initially the Depot will hold extensive stock of Softwoods, Hardwoods, Panel Products, Decorative Surfaces, Doors and Joinery Products, all of which we know are popular with our customers on a day-to-day basis. During the Summer this will be supplemented by the addition of roof-truss and timber-engineered floor production facilities. David King, the Depot Director for Bristol added ‘We have listened to our customers and responded by developing a Depot in the region, so that we can offer an improved response-time. We know that by making it easier for our customers to trade with us, we are more likely to see demand grow. We also appreciate that as the Depot develops, we are able to contribute to the local economy, providing opportunities for local people to join us and develop their career as our business grows.’

Outstanding Ofsted report for Long Cross Specialist Children’s Centre Staff, children and parents at Long Cross Specialist Children’s Centre are celebrating after achieving an outstanding Ofsted report. Inspector Rachael Williams said the nursery in Lawrence Weston had made excellent progress since its last Ofsted visit three years ago, when it was rated satisfactory. She paid tribute to the extremely dedicated management team and staff, in particular manager Karen Sheppard, who she described as “truly inspirational … highly motivated, ambitious and enthusiastic”. Ms Sheppard, Deputy Principal at Oasis Academy Long Cross, who leads on all services for children from birth to five years old, is one of three qualified teachers on the staff at the centre, which has 76 children aged two, three and four on the roll. All children were said by Ofsted to be making rapid progress, thriving and flourishing in a safe, secure and well-resourced learning environment. “Staff provide an extremely welcoming and nurturing learning environment where children thrive,” the report said. “Staff know their children incredibly well. They use every opportunity to get to know the children and their families, for example, through settling-in arrangements that are tailored to each child's needs. Staff are extremely respectful and genuinely care about the children. They are excellent role models.” Julia Dauban, Principal of Oasis Academy Long Cross, said everyone at the centre was delighted with the Ofsted outcome, which rated the centre as outstanding in all four categories - leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and pupil outcomes. “Our staff have worked exceptionally hard to build relationships with families to support children’s learning and enable all children to have the best possible start to their education here,” she said.
