Hot! Hot! Hot! This September, Guide Dogs held their first Fire Walk in Bristol, to raise money and awareness of this amazing charity. The event took place on 3rd September at Millennium Square. Despite the unexpected fire in Millennium Square that afternoon, (which Guide Dogs tells us was nothing to do with them!) the event all went to plan and was a great success. Their hope was to raise £5,000 for the charity, because this is enough to breed and train a new puppy, that will one day go on to support someone who is blind or partially sighted. And guess what, they did it! They raised just over £5,000. The thrill seekers who took part included a gentleman who is awaiting training with his first guide dog, and four guide dog owners, whose dogs watched on from the sidelines as they braved the challenge. Guide dog owner Pat told us why she signed up: ‘Guide Dogs has changed my life, now I want to change the lives of others.’

Debbie told us ‘I just think that Guide Dogs is an amazing charity. I work with someone who has a guide dog and they are so inspirational. When I heard about this event, I couldn’t wait to get involved. It was a great experience and I feel like I have made a big difference to this charity. The rush of adrenaline was amazing and I would recommend others to be fearless for charity.’ The event attracted a lot of interest on the night from passersby who stopped to cheer and clap in support of our fire walkers. There was a wonderful atmosphere in Millennium Square that night and it certainly put the fun back into fundraising for Guide Dogs in Bristol. If you would like to find out how you could get involved with Guide Dogs in other ways such as volunteering or donating, then please go to www.guidedogs.co.uk or contact your local team on 01189 838722

Sarah Knox from Guide Dogs says ‘I would really like to thank everyone who took part, sponsored our fire walkers and spectated on the night. This was a fantastic event, made all the better by the wonderful participants. 16 people braved the fire and also worked extremely hard to raise sponsorship for the event. The top fundraiser was Debbie Lambert who raised an amazing £1,015 for our charity.’

Ask the vet Help, I think I’ve found a tick on my pet! What should I do?

Answer: Firstly, don’t panic. Your immediate reaction will be to scrape off the unwelcome passenger, but it’s always best to ensure that they are properly removed. Ticks can vary in size depending on age and how much they have fed. They are usually oval shaped in appearance and can be a variety of colours. Ticks tend to latch on to areas with the least amount of fur, such as the armpit, ears and underbelly. If you are happy to remove a tick yourself, we recommend that you use a ‘ticktwister’. These claw-shaped picks slot safely between the body and the head of the tick, which you then twist until the head lifts out from under the skin. Please do not try to remove a tick any other way. It is vital that when removing a tick, the head is completely removed too. If the head gets left behind under the skin, it can cause infection and result in diseases such as Lyme Disease. If you do accidently leave the head behind, give us a call, as a quick course of antibiotics may need to be prescribed. If you do find a tick and are not confident in removing it, don’t worry, call the surgery and arrange to see one of our veterinary nurses, who will happily remove the tick free of charge for you. Call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 if you need any help.

Bristol couple slim together My partner Andrea and I realised at about the same time that we were getting out of breath just walking from the car to work. We were no longer “enjoying” our favourite pastime of country walks and birdwatching. We no longer fitted into theatre seats or on a plane. Deciding that enough was enough, 2011 was the catalyst for the transformation that was to follow . On the August Bank Holiday, a Slimming World leaflet was delivered. We had tried to follow Slimming World once before by going it alone, without support, but weren’t able to sustain our initial success. I was very apprehensive about my first Slimming World meeting, remembering the Little Britain sketches. Would I be the only man there? Are men actually welcome in these groups? Would I be twice the size of everyone else? Would I be made to introduce myself and give my life history in front of strangers? Not so. The New Member talk was where I gave my background to the consultant and it was only Emma and her social team (a group of members who volunteered to man the pay desk and weighing area) that needed to know our weights - 21 stones 4 pounds, and Andrea at just under 16 stones. And, there was another guy at the group. Our success was due to the wish to succeed and enjoy a longer life together, coupled with the support from the group. We supported each other and shared our journey with other members which helped us stick to the plan, with an occasional blip. Andrea reached her target first in about a year but she remained my weight-loss warden throughout. Emma, our consultant, with so much enthusiasm and passion has inspired us so that we would not want to let her or the group down. Emma cannot work miracles alone however.

The very reason that these groups work is the help we’ve received from our fellow slimmers, especially a member who still attends the St. Anne’s group that has a computer-like knowledge of every syn value (the unit by which the our daily intake is calculated) in existence. Her range of self-created recipes is also astonishing. It’s a fantastic ethos with everyone helping in their own way. It has been a long journey, but the milestones and feel-good moments have made it not only rewarding but enjoyable. I, for example, started off getting under 21 stone, then that ½-stone award, then the stone and then the first big one…getting under 20 stone and so it continued by the ½-stones through Club 10 (losing 10% of my starting weight) and beyond. I’d get strange looks in Sainsbury’s by trying to lift as many bags of sugar that equated to the amount I’d lost at that point. Onward through my weight loss the odd comment like my son weighs what you’ve lost also spurred me on. There was also that magical moment in 2012 where I was dressing and suddenly realised that I could see my belly button without actually having to take the trouble to go rooting around for it. I have to go back to the early 1990s since I could boast that! So now we have reached our targets but its not job done! I may now be down to 13 stone 4 pounds after achieving my 8 stone weight-loss target, and Andrea lost her 6 stones to drop from size 22 to size 8, but would it be fair just to disappear now? Certainly not! We will use our lifetime membership (you attend for free on attaining your target weight and stay within 3 pounds of it) to see if our experiences encourage others to keep going on the less successful weeks. This will also guarantee that we never slip back into bad ways. So what are we going to do with our rediscovered fitness, apart from show off about it to as many people as we can? We now just love to carry on with our country walks without limitations. Michael Wetton & Andrea Bacon

Total PC Support From

Backup: your complete guide Everyone knows they should do it, but so many don't. Whether it's your family albums or your business's accounts, you need to protect what's on your PC. You may worry that it'll take ages, cost a fortune, or that you'll forget to do it. In this guide I'll show you the different types of backup, and how they will help get around all these problems.

Copy and Paste A backup is just a second, reserve copy of your files so that you can recover from accidentally deleting things, or if your computer breaks down. So, the easiest way to back up is simply copy and paste all your files to a new, second location. Try copying everything to a ‘Backup’ folder on your C:\ drive, or on an external stick. That’s it - you now have an infinitely better backup than you did a moment ago!

System Restore Open the Windows menu and search for 'restore'. In Windows 10, open 'Recovery', from where you click on 'Configure System Restore', then 'Create...' to save your computer's current state. If your PC breaks, you can roll back to that saved state and undo any damage. This tool does not protect your own documents etc., so use it in conjunction with (at the very least!) Copy/Paste to preserve your machine properly.

Martin 3 Disk Image An entire copy of your whole hard drive is taken, wrapped up into a massive single file, and put away for safe-keeping. Then, even if your hard drive falls apart, you can buy a new one and restore the disk image to it, putting all your programs, files and folders back to where they were. Every new disk image backup is a separate, full copy of everything on your PC. 4 NAS and Cloud backups NAS stands for 'network attached storage', and might refer to a box connected to your router at home, and 'Cloud' these days refers to the Internet. So both of these essentially mean a backup stored on a network. These backup formats can act like any of the backup types already mentioned above.

Back up today! There's so much more to tell about each of these backup types, for which there's not enough space here. Pop on over to http:// shipshapecomputers.co.uk/guides to read a longer version of this article, to help you get your things backed up and secure!

Proper Backups There are much better ways to backup your computer, though. During the first backup run, each of the following copies all of your files to a destination of your choice (like a USB stick), but they differ in what they do on subsequent runs. 1 Synchronising After the first run, new files are copied to the backup destination, updated files will overwrite their older versions, and files deleted from the source will be deleted from the backup destination. 2 Incremental New and updated files are added to the backup each time, but old backups are preserved, so that you can return to any backup you choose. Bring Back: the No 36 Bus to Callington Road! Once upon a time there was a little bus that trundled around the suburbs of Bristol. Although sometimes running late, it was a popular little bus along the roads it served as it brought people together in neighbouring areas. It was popular with schoolchildren that it took safely to schools along the route; it was popular with older people who used their passes during the day to go to the shops and to meet friends for a cup of tea and some cake. It was popular with people without cars or other transport as it did not only go to the city centre and back, it let them visit friends in other areas. But it was most popular with patients, families and staff as it used to stop outside a local hospital that treats people with mental health problems from depression to dementia. Seeing families and friends at visiting times and being able to go across the nearby shop and cafÊ for a break is invaluable in making them feel loved and not alone. It truly is worth its weight in gold. But then, the Big Controller looked at the bus route and decided that the little bus had run late much too often, even though it was not the little bus’s fault; he stopped it stopping at the hospital. That meant there was no way of visiting your family member or friend in the hospital by public transport if you are elderly or unfit. It caused major problems to the Doctors, Nurses and ancillary staff who work at the hospital and who care for people all hours of the day and night. It added to loneliness and isolation for people who live alone in areas like Hungerford Road in Brislington and can no longer arrange to meet up in the cafÊ or to do a bit of shopping. This decision needs to be reversed as soon as possible. Please join your local Councillors, Rhian Greaves and Eileen Means in campaigning to restore the No36 bus to Callington Road OR to start another bus route that stops there.

Going Sober for October! The Chairlady of Bristol Fashion has the privilege of selecting a charity for the Club to support throughout her year of office. This year’s Chair, Kate has nominated MacMillan Cancer support as her charity for this year. So far well over £1,000 has been raised from a concert, a sponsored walk and members being given a bottle of water, which, once the water has been drunk, is used to collect loose change, to be returned and donated to the charity when full. I saw the publicity for Sober for October when I was feeling a little delicate from the previous night’s indulgence! What happens is that you sign up to give up alcohol for the month of October, raising money for MacMillan by getting sponsored, or asking the friend who offers to buy you a drink to make a donation instead, or donating the money you save by your abstinence (of course I may need to spend it all on chocolate!). In addition to this supporting our Chairlady’s charity and giving my liver a rest I have heard that abstinence from alcohol improves vocal performance. This is very timely, as on October 31st, Bristol Fashion will be travelling down to Bournemouth to participate and compete in the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) annual convention. Turn any corner in the conference venue and you’ll find groups singing in four part harmony, spontaneously and just for the fun of it! Saturday is chorus competition day, followed by an evening show with international award winning choruses and quartets and the announcement of competition results. And, fortuitously that will be November 1st – the end of my ‘dry spell’, so I’ll be able to celebrate (hopefully not commiserate) with a glass or two of something! I hope to have good news to impart in the next edition. Details of how to participate in ‘Sober for October’ can be found at

Lets Fight! for Kaylum Kaylum Liam Ryan was born on the 13th of October 2010 weighing a healthy 6lb 13oz. He didn’t give me chance to make it to the hospital so he was born at home. He was the first born child in the family for 15+ years so as you can imagine he was the main focus in everyone’s lives. As a baby Kaylum was happy and smiley with a big appetite. He loved his milk and was drinking 10oz bottles at a few weeks old. He was walking by the age of 10 months keeping us all on our toes. By 11 months I was finding myself at the GP’s or making late night trips to A&E on a regular basis. He always seemed to have some sort of infection or virus. They seemed to clear up fairly quickly but he would always fall ill within a short space of time. In April 2013 Kaylum woke up one morning and his eyes seemed slightly swollen, I was concerned so made a GP appointment. I was sent home with a course of eye drops for an eye infection. Within a month Kaylum also started waking up during the night complaining about pains in his stomach. Doctors said it was constipation and sent me home with movicol to use during the day. In May 2013 he started limping on his left leg. The doctor looked him over and told me must have pulled a muscle in his leg. This pain seemed to come and go, one minute he was running around or playing and the next asking to be picked up as his leg was hurting. I took him numerous times to the doctors and A&E about the pain in his leg throughout May and June. Finally they did an xray, which showed a fractured hip and a possible infection on his hip bone. We were then admitted to hospital on 23rd June 2013. Kaylum then had an operation on 24th June to have his hip washed out to make him feel free of any infection. He was also put into a hip spiker (a big plaster cast from his hip down to his knee) to repair his fractured hip. The paediatric team were planning his discharge from the hospital.

On Saturday 29th June 2013 Kaylum had his first MRI scan. I was extremely worried. Kaylum had his MRI at 2pm, they were the longest two hours of my life and I was convinced something was wrong. Around 4.30 pm my dad and I were called into a private room to receive devastating news no parent would want to be told. My gorgeous little boy had cancer. He had a number of tumours all over his body and the cancer had spread to his bones. At first I was just numb and the pain I felt was like no other. How could this be happening to my beautiful little boy? Why us? Why him? The consultant was unsure what type of cancer it was but this had to be confirmed by a biopsy. She went on to tell us that there was treatment for this type of cancer so that gave us hope. If I’m honest from that moment everything was just a blur, I had to drag myself through each minute of everyday , I was terrified of what was going to happen in the coming months. By the next day Kaylum had a black eye which we knew was further disease, we also then found out that the fracture in his hip was due to a tumour growing there. The stomach aches he was waking up with were because he had a tumour in his stomach the size of an orange! My poor little boy had all of this going on inside of his poor little body and nobody was even aware.

The day we were due to go home I pointed out to a staff nurse that he still had a temperature and wanted to know the reason for this. He was on antibiotics for several days for an infection so why was he still spiking temperatures? The doctors decided to keep him in hospital for further investigations and tests.

Can you help? He was diagnosed on 2nd of July 2013 with high risk neuroblastoma stage 4. From this point things started to happen pretty speedily. He had his Hickman life fitted on the 3rd of July and started his first dose of chemotherapy on the 5th July. He then had a number of courses of chemotherapy up until January 2014. He took really well to the chemotherapy, it didn’t make him unwell but as his blood counts started to drop he started getting temperatures more frequently. As an oncology patient as soon as his temperature reached 38 we had to go straight to A&E where they would take bloods and an oncology doctor would come down to assess him. We would then have to wait at least 3 hours until the results came back, these would determine whether we would need to stay in on antibiotics or be allowed to go home as they suspected it was just a rival infection. On January the 8th Kaylum had an operation to remove the main tumour from his stomach, this was a terrifying day. The operation lasted about 7 hours and as you can imagine to wait this long for your child to come back from surgery was horrific. His high dose Chemotherapy followed after this and he had to stay in isolation as the chemotherapy wiped all of his cells making him prone to all infection. Kaylum then had a Bone Marrow Transplant using his own cells. We had to wait for his blood count to improve before we could discharged, this took a few months.

This has slowly risen the past few months and deep down I knew that the cancer had come back. In July 2015 Kaylum had to have a Bone Marrow asprit and MIBG scan to tell us whether it had returned. On Friday 24th July 2015 we were told that he had relapsed and the cancer had returned. I have been told by his consultant that the chance of cure once a child has relapse with neuroblastoma is vey very slim. There are hospitals in America that offer a different type of treatment that is not available here in the UK that would give Kaylum a much higher chance of cure. There shouldn't be a price on a child’s life but sadly there is and as a mother I will do everything to get him to America for his best chance of cure. Kaylum has now started another course of treatment at Bristol’s Children Hospital where we need to get him back into remission before we can take him to America for his next stage of treatment. “Fight for Kaylum” is a charity evening of boxing with big names dressing up as super heroes (Kaylums favourite). There will be an auction and a raffle, every penny will go towards Kaylum. Organised by Chris Winter locally know as “Skemer.” Tel: Chris Skimmer 0768 496604 for tickets.

Next time Kaylum went on a new trial drug called ANTI GD2. This drug targets cancer cells which may have been missed by the Chemotherapy. This treatment ended on the 27th October 2014 and Kaylum was now in remission! I thought at this point I would feel a rush of joy and happiness being told that Kaylum was cancer free but I didn’t. I knew it would always be in the back of my mind. When would it come back? For 9 months we were able to live life as happy and as normal as we could. Kaylum enjoyed days out and playing with his friends which he wasn't able to do for a long time whilst he was on treatment. For the past couple of months I had started to realise that Kaylum was getting a little more tired than usual and started to get emotional and irritable . At his monthly check up they keep an eye on his level of catecholamine's which were hormones in his body that are checked through a urine sample.

Breaking News: Flu vaccines are available free on the NHS to eligible patients from pharmacies! You heard it here first (maybe). Flu occurs every year in Winter. It is a highly infectious disease that develops very rapidly and presents as fever, pain, joint-stiffness, extreme tiredness, chills, coughs and colds. It is unpleasant enough if you are healthy but if you are in an at-risk group then it can be lifethreatening with thousands of hospital admissions every year and even deaths. Flu can easily lead to pneumonia and difficulty breathing leading to hospitalisation, intensive care and even death. At risk groups include;  The over 65’s  Pregnant  Long-term health conditions such as;  Asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)  Chronic heart disease such as heart failure (fluid on the lungs)  Chronic liver or kidney disease  Diabetes (dietary, type 1 and type 2)  Neurological diseases such as Parkinson's or motor neurone disease  You are a carer for somebody (paid or unpaid) If you have one of these conditions, even if it is well -managed you will be ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE FLU JAB ON THE NHS. Remember Flu Kills. Each year tens of thousands of patients who are eligible for free flu jabs don’t get them. This results in serious health complications for many of them. Much of the reason for this is lack of awareness or lack of access to a GP at a time that suits you. Historically GPs have scheduled several sessions each year for eligible patients to attend a mass vaccination program organised at each surgery. This is not always practical or convenient for everybody and so the uptake of this free service has been modest.

To open this up and improve compliance rates (and so cut hospital admissions and complications) the NHS has enabled participating pharmacies to administer flu vaccines. This will take the pressure off the nations’ hard-presses GPs and also enable you to get yours at a time and place that suits you. The cost of doing this also saves the NHS money thus persevering vital resources and so makes sense all round. BOOK YOUR HENGROVE PHARMACY APPOINMETNT NOW! Vaccinations start from 5th October 2105. Simply phone HENGROVE PHARMACY on 0117 300 5446 to enquire and you may be able to get yours right away even without an appointment subject to demand. It really is that simple. Remember to bring proof of ID and eligibility to make sure you fit into one of the categories above if you are not already registered with us as a patient. Latest flu vaccine uptake figures from Public Health England (PHE) show some positive signs, with more than 70% of people aged 65 and over vaccinated. However less than 50% of those aged under 65 with a health condition have been vaccinated, and only 43% of pregnant women. In addition , 37% of all two year olds, 40% of all three year olds, and 32% of all four years olds have been vaccinated with the nasal spray vaccine as part of the childhood flu immunisation programme form the GP. PHE also encourages healthcare workers and carers who could pass the infection to vulnerable people to get vaccinated. Our pharmacists conduct medicines usage reviews which is a friendly informal discussion about your medicines and how you are getting on with them. This is free and informal and if you are concerned about any aspect of your medication, even if you are not registered with us, feel free for a no obligation discussion with our trained staff . Ask one of these and we can check if you are eligible for a free flu jab at the same time.

Halloween Race Returns To Leigh Woods Whether your looking for a challenge trail race, or simply a different way to burn calories with your running buddies this autumn, sign up for the Nightingale Nightmare 10k off-road race, which returns to Bristol on Sunday, 1st November. This Halloween-themed race is back for its third year and will be better than ever, taking in the woodland of Leigh Woods and running under the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge along the River Avon Towpath. With free cake for all finishers, as well as a spooktacular medal, the low entry price of £10 (£8 for affiliated runners) makes this the ideal race to focus your autumn training for. Southville Running Club is behind the event and the team has been hard at work for months coming up with lots of spooky and fun ways to keep runners on their toes over the testing 10k terrain. From haunted house marshal stations, to the grim reaper chasing the runners, and even eyeballshaped cakes for afterwards, there’s plenty to guarantee the Nightingale Nightmare will be a brilliant race for runners of all abilities and everybody is welcome to take part. Race director James Prestidge says: “Is a fun but challenging Halloween-themed 10k race for runners of all abilities. The race reflects Southville Running Club: serious about running but also serious about having fun! Come and join us for our fabulous spooky, fun and challenging race.” The Nightingale Nightmare is also a rare opportunity to race through the National Trust’s centuries-old Leigh Woods, which boasts a long history spanning medieval mythology and Iron Age dwellings. As you run the race you will pass through oak, small leaved lime and ash woodland, and by the time November 1st comes around the area promises red and golden hues and a weird and wonderful mix of fungi. Perfect for working up an appetite for those scarily tasty free cakes at the finish line! For more information and to enter please visit

Are your kids between 9-13? Do you wish they'd get involved in something that could really boost their confidence and improve their attitude? Then your exciting local after-school club, Operation 'MAD', is definitely worth a try! Operation 'MAD' is a non-profit organisation, set up to boost confidence and self-belief in your children! The company has just launched 3 more confidence boosting afterschool clubs in the South Bristol area, thanks to the incredible support from Bedminster Down Secondary School and Victoria Park Primary School! This exciting club is part of The Success Academy, an organisation designed to help children see how special they are by teaching them vital life skills, including: goal setting, visualisation, positive thinking and different organisational, communication, and learning techniques. The children’s organisation is still open to new sign-ups, and is already prepared for parents to sign their children up for programmes in the New Year! Visit www.operation-mad.com/get-in-touch/ for more information. Operation ‘MAD’ has had an amazing year so far, and they'd like to say "thank you" to everyone that has been a part of it! If you think your child could really benefit, but are put off because they are not keen on clubs or big groups, then the organisers also teach these life changing lessons using their 1-1 sessions (they can even bring a friend along too!) Do you think this is something your child could benefit from? Call Abby on 07894 966608.
