Ask The
Vet
Question: Do I need to clean my pet’s teeth? Answer: Absolutely. Aside from keeping your pet’s breath smelling sweet(ish!), regular teeth cleaning is the best known way to prevent gum and dental disease. Ideally you should brush your pet’s teeth daily, just like you would yourself. However if this isn’t possible then aim to brush at least four times a week. You will need a pet toothbrush and specially formulated toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste. It’s never too early to start cleaning your pet’s teeth; teach them when they are young so that it is something they become used to. When training, always reward them during and after so that it is a positive experience. If you’re unsure of how to do it, pop in to see us and we’ll talk you through it. If unhealthy teeth are left untreated, it can cause your pet a lot of pain. When the tartar moves under the gum line, it causes them to become inflamed, red and very sore. This is known as gingivitis. Without intervention, it can develop into serious periodontal disease, resulting in tooth loss, abscesses or infection that can affect other organs around the body. If you’re unsure whether your pet’s teeth are healthy, book an appointment to see one of our friendly veterinary nurses for a FREE dental health check. Call Brislington Veterinary Centre now on 0117 971 5115.

Bristol Slimmer Meets Peter Butt, 34, from Brislington, won a place in the semi-finals of Slimmimg World’s Man of the Year 2015. He was congratulated on his weight loss of 8stone 7lbs by soap star and model Gemma Atkinson (who shot to fame in teen soap Hollyoaks and is currently starring in ITV’s Emmerdale). Peter was apprehensive about joining a slimming club and walking through the door for the first time but he found everyone friendly, helpful and welcoming. Men often think about exercising and dieting on their own. But when they do join a slimming club they are more successful than the ladies. Before he joined Slimming World he didn’t think that eating healthily would leave him feeling satisfied and he expected to feel hungry. Peter found it easy to eat healthily and lost weight whilst enjoying his favourite foods by making them differently. Like everyone in the group, men and women, Peter began to feel better about himself, lost weight and improved his health. Peter was proud to tell his friends about Slimming World.
Soap Star When Peter made the finals of the competition he was thrilled to meet the gorgeous Gemma. She was extremely impressed to meet the 34 men at Slimming World’s head office in Alfreton. She says “It was a pleasure to meet Peter and hear all about his weight loss. He looks great but it’s about much more than that, he has improved his health and feels happier and more confident. I’m sure he will inspire more men in Bristol to follow his example.” Millie Lewis who runs the Brislington group is proud of Peter and says that Slimming World is there to support men as well as women to slim down and improve their health. With 6 in 10 men classed as overweight or obese compared to 5 in 10 women, more men than women need support to slim down and improve their health. At Slimming World it’s not about doing it alone. As well as sharing tips and ideas in the group, it’s about eating healthily and getting more active at home so it works for everyone in the family. Everyone is welcome, men and women, at 5.30pm and 7:30pm at St Cuthberts Church, Sandy Park Road where the group share tips and ideas. Call Millie 07879423665 www.slimmingworld.com

Total PC Support From

Windows Privacy Nightmare You may or may not have taken Microsoft up on their offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10. But if you have, or are planning to, there are a few settings you'll want to turn off during or after installation: Wi-Fi Sense Windows 10 shares your Wi-Fi password with everyone in your contacts list. They can't read it themselves, but they can access your Wi-Fi network, as can their friends too if Windows 10 is installed. In addition, your password is stored on a Microsoft server somewhere. This is a clear security risk, and one to steer clear of. Turn it off in the Change Wi-Fi Settings section of the Settings app.
Keep Microsoft's prying eyes and poor security choices out of your PC Why Microsoft chose to implement these tools, and to make them the default, is anyone's guess. Mine is that they knew they'd be unpopular, but would help them make money through personalised advertisements. Here at Ship Shape, I've turned all these settings off on PCs which I've upgraded to Windows 10, and would suggest you do too!
Windows Update Delivery Optimisation (WUDO) This mouthful uses your internet connection to share Windows updates with other Windows users, whether on your network or out there on the Internet. This not only risks using up your download limit for no benefit to you, but it also sends details of which apps you have on your PC, so it knows which updates to download from other Windows 10 users! It's only a matter of time before this is hijacked, so turn it off in the Update and Security section of the Settings app. Windows connects your laptop to any open wireless hotspot This is a massive security issue. You should NEVER connect to a hotspot which isn't password protected, because that indicates that your wireless data is not encrypted, and anyone can spy on it. This is an extremely unsafe way to work, and should be turned off. Turn it off in the Change Wi-Fi Settings section of the Settings app. The Cortana Search assistant is listening to you, and learning If Cortana's voice-activation is switched on, she's listening to everything you say, waiting for a command (to search for a file, for example, or launch an app). But it also logs your location, your handwriting (on tablets), your contacts, calendar and more. This data all ends up on a Microsoft server somewhere. Cortana knows rather a lot about you, then, but many users won't even be using Cortana. If that's you, it's an easy choice to turn Cortana off. Do this in the Cortana and Search Settings section of the Settings app.

Brislington - the mouse that
ROARED
Brislington is a friendly quiet neighbourhood on the whole; 'quiet’ in the sense of ‘placid’. Neither rich nor deprived, people get on with their lives, help their friends and neighbours, pay their taxes and so can be taken for granted or overlooked. At least, I think that is what Bristol City Council Officers thought when as part of the 2nd phase of library consultation, they proposed to close Wick Road Library. They were soon disabused of any such ideas! At some point, I think that almost every resident of Brislington became involved in the campaign to save Wick Rd library. First, we aimed to get over 3,500 signatures on hard copy and e-petition opposing the closure so that a 20 minute debate at a meeting of Full Council had to be held according to Bristol City Council Standing Orders; we got just under 5,000 signatures. We organised the march up to the Broadwalk to show how difficult and dangerous the walk up to the next nearest library would be; on a working day, between 150-180 people turned up with their children who were magnificent. Primary school-aged children marched up Talbot Hill and carried amazing signs they had made themselves. We organised a Save Wick Rd website, sent letters to the Mayor, to the Green Party Assistant Mayor who surprisingly announced the plan to close 7 of Bristol’s suburban libraries including Wick Rd library, and any other influential person we could think of. Local schools all became involved and got behind the campaign.
RESULT! Officers were instructed to “go back to the drawing board” and re-think the plan. The latest proposal is that 6 of the 7 libraries should remain open, but that opening times need to be reduced for budgetary reasons. The Mayor and Asst Mayor Radice will make the decision at the Cabinet Meeting on 1st September. I’ll be there to hold them to it. Whilst other libraries also ran campaigns, the leading one that had most impact and kept officers on the case because they never knew what would happen next was the Save Wick Rd campaign. I was on the planning group, but it was, non-party political, (although one political party tried to claim the credit). So HUGE THANKS to the people of Brislington, they showed that if they are pushed too far...Well just don’t even try! Eileen Means Labour Party Councillor for Brislington West

Sing A Song Of
Sixpence
How does it go on? I’m sure that anyone who grew up using English will have no difficulty continuing with “... a pocket full of rye”. You sang it as a child, and then again to your own children. But how about “I see a little silhouetto of a man ...”? Did you “automatically” go on with “Scaramouche, Scaramouche, can you do the fandango”? There are songs that you learnt early in life or have heard and sung over and over again. We all of us also have music that has been important to us at some time in our lives, songs and tunes that we don’t have to struggle to remember. This is the basic idea of the Singing for the Brain sessions instituted by the Alzheimer’s Society (http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/). At regular meetings people with dementia and their carers get together to have fun, singing songs they know and love, but also – and this may surprise many people – learning new songs. Those who attend these sessions, which are often preceded by tea or coffee and a chat, know that there are many benefits: it gives people a reason to get out of the house: it’s something that everyone can do together, including people who say “But I can’t really sing”!
And the singing helps to improve posture and breathing. As a volunteer once remarked, “When everyone’s in a circle, singing and moving, you can’t tell who’s got dementia and who hasn’t.” That’s why it’s really important that carers come along, too. Caring for someone with dementia, a relative or partner, can be hard work that requires considerable patience and tolerance. At a Singing for the Brain session both carer and cared-for are in a safe place and a friendly atmosphere, doing something enjoyable together. Many groups also have extra volunteers, and possibly a pianist or guitarist to support the singing. Movement is important, too, engaging mind and body in the meaning of the song and the fun of singing. It’s a wonderful antidote to depression as you can see in the 4-minute video on www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/ scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=760 Singing also enhances brain activity for us all Learning to sing stretches people, and will naturally and easily move us out of our comfort zone and daily routine, which is very good for all of us. Challenges when we overcome them, and doing different things which stretch us, make us feel very good.

SOUTH WEST DRINKERS URGED TO STAY OFF THE SAUCE THIS SEPTEMBER FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK SOUTH WEST men and women are being challenged to ditch the drink this September to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The charity is launching Dryathlon, the original fundraising campaign that invites social drinkers a monthlong break from alcohol. For the first time the campaign will take place in September as well as the New Year, offering supporters the exciting opportunity to take part in Dryathlon outside of January. ‘Dryathletes’ pledge to stay dry for a month and either gets sponsored or donate the money they would have spent on alcohol to the charity. Alison Birkett, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for the South West, said: “you may be a cider drinker of prefer a glass of Prosecco or two. The main aim is to stay off the tipple in September and we hope that men and women across the region will take on this new challenge in the autumn. “it’s the start of a new season, so this is the perfect opportunity to kick-start the month with a clear head. After a summer of boozy holidays and ‘one too many’ at weddings, we’re urging people to be dry and mighty and sign up to Drayathlon. “we’re confident that men and women in the South west will say ‘cheers’ to the challenge and help us bring forward the day when all cancers are cured” Supporters can register to take part in Dryathlon as individuals or set up a team and get their friends, colleagues or relatives involved to motivate each other along the way. And those who find one month challenge a bit too daunting, there's the ‘tipple tax’ which allows Dryathletes to donate £20 penalty for each time they fall off the wagon. In January 2015, 54,000 people took part in Dryathlon across the UK and helped raise a fantastic £5 million to help beat cancer sooner. Following this September’s campaign, Dryathlon will be returning in January 2016 ready for those looking for a booze-free start to the New Year. Alison said “ Since our launch three years ago, our army of Dryathletes have shown true grit and determination in banning the booze for a brilliant cause. Now, there’s double the opportunity to feel the benefit of going dry. “we’re urging people to commit to Dryathlon now so they’re ready and raring to go on September 1ST. Every pound raised by our dryathletes heroes will help fund life-saving research.” every hour, three people are diagnosed with cancer in the south west. Dryathlon aims to raise money to accelerate ground-breaking research to help more people survive and ensure more families stay together. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970’s and cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Thank to advances in research, more people in the South West are surviving cancer than ever before. But more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
