Politicians, pavements and potholes GOVERNMENT

By the time that you read this, the Local Bristol City Council Elections on 5th May will have decided whether our city has a new mayor and whether the voters of Brislington West decide that I am worth re-electing to represent them. I hope so - - it has been a blast! Throughout this time on Bristol City Council, I have highlighted the difficulties we citizens face getting around our city and it is getting worse instead of better. Bristol is by far the largest town in the South West and we contribute to the Treasury, so we deserve better when it comes to our transport systems and our roads. Whilst the roadworks and congestion in the city centre are regularly reported, roads in our suburbs have not been receiving the attention that they need and are disintegrating. I hope that the suburbs receive their share of the recently-announced funding to repair potholes. As an example: Hungerford Road in Brislington that runs parallel to the main A4 Bath Road now takes more traffic than it was designed for. The photographs show some of the potholes, there are too many to include, due to the volume of traffic using Hungerford Road as a rat run. But it is a rat run that doesn’t work very well due to the congestion at either end, causing tail backs and delays. It is a residential road, lined by houses on both sides and the speed limit is of course 20 mph. Not that that has made much difference to the risks that people take trying to cross the road. There is a very large school at one end, and the chaos when the students come out has to be seen to be believed. One photograph shows the broken kerbstones at the main school gates. In addition, local residents are concerned about the pollution from buses and lorries going past so close to their homes. I do hope that the City Council’s Highways Maintenance team pay attention to roads in the outer sections of our city; they need repair and in the case of Hungerford Road, re-design and resurfacing Eileen Means Labour Councillor Brislington West

Cheering on Mum’s weight Loss Mum of two, Emma, 31 from Bristol has shifted three stone and is now a cheerleader!! Emma, aged 31 from Bristol decided that after giving birth to her second child it was time to shift the excess baby weight that had built up over four years making her the biggest she had ever been. Now three stone lighter, Emma is leading an active lifestyle and has even joined an adult cheer leading team to show her daughter that mummy’s are just as cool as kids!! Emma joined her local slimming group when her baby was six weeks old after hearing how slimming world had introduced an extra easy plan that enabled her to never feel hungry! “I had some friends who had joined slimming world who kept telling me how they were able to eat things like a full English breakfast and burger and chips, I couldn’t quite believe it so joined my local group to see if it was actually true! After having struggled with her weight throughout most of her adult life Emma lived on processed oven foods and takeaways. After joining her first group Emma quickly learned that following the plan was not just a diet but a new way of life. “I developed confidence by staying to group each week, I started cooking meals from scratch and actually started to enjoy learning all about the amazing recipes and food optimising. My family and I can still enjoy delicious meal such as lasagne, roast dinner and even a full English breakfast!

Each week Emma weighed, it was always a loss, by sticking to her plan and with the support of her family and other group members Emma reached her target weight just 11 months after joining, now three years on and with her son due to start school in September Emma is still at target weight and has now decided to open up her own group to help people achieve their dream weight. “Slimming world has not just changed my life but also my families, each night we sit down for dinner and the whole family enjoy delicious home cooked meals. I feel healthier and happier than ever and I am able to teach my children the importance of a healthy balanced diet too. Now three years at target Emma has not only joined the parent cheer leading team of her daughters dance academy but she is also running twice a week and has signed up to run both the Bristol 10k and half Marathon. I will be re-launching the Hengrove group and it will be running at 5.30 and 7.30 pm every Tuesday at Hengrove Community Centre Fortfield Road, Whitchurch, Bristol.

Westfalia launch NEW BC 70 Towbar Mounted Cycle Carrier Leading automotive specialist Westfalia are delighted to announce the launch of the BC 70 Cycle Carrier. Ideal for everyone who enjoys outdoor adventure the multi-functional and compact BC 70 has evolved from the award winning BC 60, which has seen some innovative model updates.

The BC 70 automatically clamps onto the towbar ball head, has quick locking cycle fasteners for easy handling and features a visually attractive aluminium profile. For protection against corrosion the BC 70 is double painted with cathodic dip paint and powder coating.

Offering the ultimate in convenience, no tools or assembly of individual parts is required to attach the carrier to the vehicle, making it easy to fit and use. Mounted onto the rear of the vehicle means cycles can be loaded and unloaded quickly, and being rear mounted the BC 70 doesn’t significantly increase fuel consumption as it sits in the slipstream of the vehicle.

Developed and tested in close cooperation with the automotive industry and independent testing facilities the BC 70 is ECE approved and TUV (German Technical Inspection Authority) and GS certified. When not in use the BC 70 folds down to 58x22x69cm (WxHxD) making it small enough to fit into a car boot. Alternatively if you’re looking for additional storage space the Westfalia Box or Platform can be mounted onto the BC 70.

The BC 70 will carry 2 cycles with an optional extension rail available for a third cycle. With a payload of 60kg the BC 70 is suitable for heavy electric cycles as well as ordinary cycles. Suitable for bikes with frames up to 8cm diameter, tyre widths up to 6cm and a wheelbase of up to 130cm, the BC 70 comes pre-assembled and ready to use. An innovative swivel-down mechanism ensures full access to the vehicles boot even when the BC 70 is loaded.

The multi-purpose Westfalia Box provides an extra 200L of storage space. The removable box is ideal for holidays, shopping, work and leisure activities and also for use on smaller vehicles where boot space may be limited. The Box is easy to mount and dismount onto the BC 70. Rollers on the Box make it easy to move even when loaded. The top opening lid includes a lock and the lid can easily be removed for transporting larger items. If you would like more information about the BC 70 Cycle Carrier please call us on 0117 9551011 / 1022, email info.uk@westfalia-automotive.com or visit www.westfalia- automotive.com.

The Origins of Barbershop Harmony Was barbershop harmony actually sung in barbershops? Certainly, and on street corners (it was sometimes called "kerbstone" harmony) and at social functions and in parlours. Its roots are not just the white, Middle-America of Norman Rockwell's famous painting (below). Rather, barbershop is a "melting pot" product of African-American. Immigrants to the new world brought with them a musical repertoire that included hymns, psalms, and folk songs. These simple songs were often sung in four parts with the melody set in the second-lowest voice. Minstrel shows of the mid-1800s often consisted of white singers in blackface (later black singers themselves) performing songs and sketches based on a romanticized vision of plantation life. As the minstrel show was supplanted by the equally popular vaudeville, the tradition of close-harmony quartets remained, often as a "four act" combining music with ethnic comedy that would be scandalous by modern standards.

You can find out more about British Barbershop on www.labbs.org.uk and www.singbarbershop.com , or, more locally www.bristol-fashion.org.uk ( new look website online)and www.greatwesternchorus.com

Or better still, come to Bristol Fashion’s show on June 11th 7.30 at Staplehill Methodist Church for a great evening’s entertainment. For information, tickets etc email PRO@bristolfashion.org.uk

The "barbershop" style of music is first associated with black southern quartets of the 1870s, such as The American Four and The Hamtown Students. The African influence is particularly notable in the improvisational nature of the harmonization, and the flexing of melody to produce harmonies in "swipes" and "snakes." Black quartets "cracking a chord" were commonplace at places like Joe Sarpy's Cut Rate Shaving Parlor in St. Louis, or in Jacksonville, Florida, where, black historian James Weldon Johnson writes, "every barbershop seemed to have its own quartet." The first written use of the word "barbershop" when referring to harmonizing came in 1910, with the publication of the song, "Play That Barbershop Chord" ‹evidence that the teras in common parlance by that time. (Acapella Foundation) Nowadays, in addition to men’s quartets, barbershop is sung by men’s and women’s choruses in many countries across the globe. The style has developed, and competitive barbershop singing has a number of rules which define the genre.

Ask the vet What should you do if you find a baby bird? Spring has finally sprung and many birds are busy raising their new families. However, what should you do if you find what appears to be an ‘orphaned’ baby bird?

If the fledgling is in immediate danger (e.g. from cats or busy roads etc) you can place it in a sheltered safe area close to where you found it and continue to watch from a distance.

According to the RSPCA, you must first assess how old the bird is. This can be done by looking at the feathers – if it is fully feathered it will be a fledgling, if it has none or very few, this will be a nestling.

If, after watching it for a long period of time, you believe the bird to be orphaned place it in a well ventilated box and take to your nearest wildlife rescue centre or contact a veterinary practice.

If you find a fledgling If it is not injured, do not touch it or move it. Fledglings often attempt to leave the nest before they can fly and are usually being watched by their parents nearby. Continue to watch from a distance to see if the parents return. DO NOT attempt to put the fledgling back in its nest as this can be more damaging than helpful.

If you find a nestling Nestlings are often far too young to be able to survive for long outside of the nest and should be taken to a rescue centre or vets as soon as possible. Baby birds and wildlife require specialist treatment, so please never try to care for an ‘orphaned’ animal yourself. If you find a baby bird and are unsure what to do, please contact a wildlife rescue centre, the RSPCA or your local veterinary practice for more Information.

PC support from Ship Shape Computers Five things you DON’T need to do to keep your PC Ship Shape People worry that they’re not taking care of their computers. Like cars, tools, clothes and furniture, computers do need a little bit of maintenance now and again. But there’s so much bad advice out there, or tempting messages which can lead to trouble, that it’s worth pointing out a few things that you NEVER need to do: Update your drivers: It’s always being suggested to us that we should ‘update our drivers’, and we try to do so even if we’re not sure what problems they’re causing! In some specific circumstances this can help, but it’s not a good idea to do it just for the sake of it. Avoid software which claims to help you do it, and only ever download a driver from the manufacturer’s website. Clean the registry: This was definitely something that needed doing when Windows XP ruled the roost. Cleaning the registry used to speed up your PC, but it’s no longer necessary. Removing specific registry parts can sometimes help, but it’s best to get an expert in who knows exactly what they’re doing. Wholesale cleaning is no longer needed, and carries risks of damaging Windows.

Talk to Microsoft: There’s a fashion at the moment for malicious websites which make it look like your PC has crashed. There’s a phone number for you to call, just there on the screen too. Or you might have received a phone call from ‘Microsoft Computer Support’ telling you that something is wrong with your laptop. No company knows about your laptop, and any that approach you to ‘help’ you in any way is lying. If you notice something wrong with your PC, look for a reputable company who can fix it for you. Put the phone down or close that fake browser window, and your PC will be safer. See, it’s often better to take the lazy way out! Just get on with browsing the web, playing games and enjoying your computer, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Delete your photos: People often ask me whether they should delete lots of photos, or bemoan the lack of time they have to tidy up their photo collection. They assume that all that digital clutter is slowing their machine. It’s not, unless you’ve got very little space left. While it’s always good to delete things you don’t want, you don’t have to delete anything for the benefit of the computer. Upgrade your antivirus: Of course you should update your security software, but if you’ve got a free package, then you don’t need to upgrade to a paid version unless you need extra features like spam filters and parental control. It just so happens that the best antivirus packages are the paid- for ones like Kaspersky, but upgrading a free version of Avast to the paid-for version won’t improve Avast’s capabilities at virus prevention.

Bristol’s very own superhero Kaylum Liam Ryan was born on the 13th October weighing a very healthy 6lb 13oz. In July 2013, following several bouts of illness Kaylum was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblasta. This is a cancer of specialised nerve cells called neural crest cells. These cells are involved in the development of the nervous system and other tissues. Surgery to remove the main tumour from his stomach was closely followed by a high dose of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, radiotherapy and drugs which took him into remission. July 2015 Kaylum’s family were told the devastating news that he had relapsed and the cancer had returned. Kaylum’s consultant informed them the chance of a cure once a child has relapsed with neuroblasta is very slim. There are however, hospitals in America that offer a different treatment that would give him a much better chance of a cure. We need to help the family towards a target of £280,000 to get the treatment. The family have embarked tirelessly to try and raise awareness and funds for kaylum whilst constantly being at the hospital for endless rounds of chemotherapy and treatments. More recently, in Feburury 2016, whilst at a London hospital about to start an intense radiation treatment, Kaylums family were told he had a brain tumour and had to return to Bristol for more surgery.
