George Osborne’s plan for a Metro Mayor! I was one of a very few who voted against this extra layer of bureaucracy for many reasons. GOVERNMENT

First and foremost I believe in grassroots up and not top down politics, and empowering local people and communities first.

So much has been going on in the news over the past few weeks it has been difficult to keep up with all the twists and turns. However, one of the most important messages from the recent referendum is that voters feel a disconnect between Politicians and the lives ordinary people lead. Yet instead of learning the lessons this Government seems intent on removing as much democracy as it can. Recently the council voted to accept George Osborne’s plan for a Metro Mayor for most of the old Avon area.

Those with long memories will remember Avon County as an unloved creation which was finally disbanded with the creation of the Unitary Authorities. Recently Bath and North East Somerset Council voted to reject a directly elected mayor for their area and yet the voted in favour of the Metro Mayor. Surely the arguments they used around the lack of accountability of Mayors and the cost are doubly relevant here? We need to strengthen our representative democracy and not centralise power into the hands of another highly paid and remote Politician. Cllr Jos Clark Liberal Democrat Councillor Brislington West Ward Tel 07584 370429

The idea is for them to have strategic overview of transport and other services and get a billion pounds extra of taxpayers money as a bribe for accepting the new post of Metro Mayor.

This was brought home to me recently when I went to entertain a small group of people with some comic stories and monologues. Afterwards one lady said to me privately, where the others couldn’t hear, that she rarely went out of the house and might not talk to anyone from one week’s end to the next; she couldn’t remember the last time she had laughed so much.

This is a round that we sometimes sing in our warm-ups at Bristol Fashion. You may know it from Scouting or Guiding days, or perhaps you learnt it at school. Rounds and other exercises help us to make sure we’re standing properly, breathing correctly, hitting the right notes, watching out for phrase endings, listening across the chorus for timing and harmony and, most important of all, watching our director. But its meaning is important too. One of the really positive things about the barbershop world is the friendship and solidarity a chorus offers. You get to know the others in your voice group, the ones who stand near you on the risers (that’s our name for the staging steps we stand on) and you go through the joys and sorrows of their lives with them, just as they support you when you need it. Soon you’ll find you know everyone in the chorus. The closest relationship is probably between the members of a quartet, who spend hours together practising. You find out all about the complications of their family lives, usually while desperately trying to arrange the date of the next rehearsal!

If this brings tears to your eyes, as it did to mine, then please spare a passing thought for people who are on their own: not just the elderly, but hard-working singles new to the area, single parents struggling to balance work and child-care, the shy, retiring person in the canteen who never sits with anybody. Perhaps you could take them along to a session of whatever hobby group you’re in, encourage them to join in, have a go – or just ask them to join you for a cup of coffee and a chat. Of course, I’d recommend that they join a choir or chorus, but that might not be everyone’s cup of tea!

One of those times when you need a little help from a friend. Bristol Fashion Chorus meets on Thursday evenings, 7.30-10.00 pm at Four Acres Academy, Four Acres, Withywood, Bristol, BS13 8RB. If you’d like more information please look at the chorus website: http://www.bristol-fashion.org.uk/ where you’ll also find contact details.

The City with the three mayors A long, long time ago in a city in the far, far west of the country that was to become England, the people decided that they needed a Mayor and Councillors to look after things and to represent them to the rich nobility to whom they paid taxes. This worked reasonably well for several centuries despite civil war, rebellions and riots when the populace of the city made their feelings known against an unpopular Council. Indeed it worked so well that the Queen-Empress in the 19th Century awarded the Mayor of the City the title of 'Lord Mayor' which sounds very grand. (It cost nothing and allowed everyone to have a good party). This Lord Mayor wears a long robe and feathers in his hat.

Unfortunately, the new powers weren't forthcoming from the capital city, that liked keeping a grip of things out in the sticks, but being short of ideas, the Conservative Government decided that a new post to be called a "Metro Mayor" would be a good idea. By this time, the population weren't at all keen so lots of money in future was promised if the new Mayor was agreed. The City Council was swayed towards this Metro Mayor post.  But no-one has asked the citizens yet: what will you do with 3 Mayors?  Liverpool has 2 cathedrals and "if you want one, we have one to spare"

Then in the 21st Century along came a Coalition Government in London that, like the QueenEmpress wanted to be seen to be doing something radical, so they proposed new powers to cities that voted for a new kind of mayor called a City Mayor. Most of the population said "we don't see the point" and voted against except for our city, now called Bristol.

 Bristol will have 3 Mayors, three tiers of 'governance'. Can we have some sanity back please? By Eileen Means

A teensy tiny proportion of the electorate of the city decided that two Mayors would give it more importance. The newest Mayor wouldn't wear a robe or feathers in his hat though.

Is my dog at risk of lungworm? Dogs of all ages and breeds can contract lungworm, however, younger dogs seem to be more prone to picking up the parasite. Also, dogs who are known to eat slugs and snails are considered higher risk. Lungworm can be fatal to dogs and it is easier than you’d think for your dog to become infected. Lungworm (also known as Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite commonly carried by slugs and snails. Dogs can become infected when they eat these pests (either intentionally or accidentally) or if they come in to contact with their slime trial. Some dogs do not show visible signs of a lungworm infection, however, there are some symptoms to look out for including; coughing, tiring easily, nose bleeds, excessive bleeding (even from minor wounds), anaemia, weight loss, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, or lethargy and depression. Lungworm can be easily prevented by using a monthly spot on or tablet treatment. These are available from your veterinary practice, and are very much encouraged as part of your pet’s regular prevention treatment.

Speak to Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 for more information or to check if your dog is protected against lungworm. For those who are interested in learning more about the infection, Lungworm.co.uk has a number of stories about pet owners whose dogs have been affected.

Recipes for a slimmer summer With its warmer weather, longer and lighter nights and hot holidays, there are lots of things to love about summer. Slimming World is set to make the season even better by helping slimmer's to keep their weight losses on track and enjoy their limmest summer ever. Slimming World’s Little Book of Summer is loaded with recipes that are all specially designed for both warmer weather and wonderful weight losses. Whether readers are planning a brilliant barbecue, packing the perfect picnic or looking for low-fat desserts, they’ll find the inspiration they need to enjoy every occasion and still slim in this new collection. Sarah Bryant, who runs a Slimming World groups in Hengrove and Whitchurch, says: "As the weather gets warmer, we can’t hide behind our layers and baggy clothes so we want to look and feel our best. However, the summer months can be a difficult time for slimmer's because our normal routines are usually disrupted with holidays, the kids are off school and we’re busy enjoying days out, meaning it can feel harder than usual to eat healthily and fit in activity. "This book is a real life-saver, though. It’s full of delicious recipes to help slimmer's stay on track whatever they’ve got planned and show people that they don’t need to miss out on any summer fun.

Slimming World isn’t about going ‘on a diet’, it’s about discovering a new way of eating that means you can still have the foods you love and live your life. People often think that losing weight means sticking to a strict rigid plan and going without. Our plan fits in around you, rather than you having to fit your life around the plan, and unlike other weight-loss plans the focus is on all the fabulous foods you can enjoy – including BBQ and picnic favourites – instead of what you can’t have." The recipes in Slimming World’s Little Book of Summer are based on Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, which allows slimmer's to satisfy their appetite on every day foods like fruit and veg, meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice and potatoes so there’s no need to go hungry while losing weight. The collection includes more than 60 recipes including mouth-watering meals, light bites, icecold desserts and drinks, plus fresh ideas for sizzling barbecues and pretty picnics. So whether readers are tucking into Surf and Turf Skewers with fresh ketchup, Rustic potato salad or Cherry cheesecake in a jar (or all three!), they’re guaranteed their tastiest – and trimmest – summer ever. The recipes are all easy enough to suit all cooking abilities and each one is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the taste buds and help inspire novice cooks. For more delicious recipes and to find out more about how you can lose weight and eat delicious food with Slimming World, visit www.slimmingworld.com or join the a local Slimming World group, which is held daily. If you spot, any wear or tear signs, stay away from the car. When talking about the bodywork of the car, it consists of a number of things such as:

Buying a used BMW What comes to your mind when you think about the prestigious BMW cars? Well, it surely has to be luxury, poise accompanied with comfort. You might have thought a lot of times to buy a BMW car, but could not, as the prices are expensive. Catering to this need are many of the dealers that offer pre owned BMW cars in the UK. These pre-owned cars are perfect for people who want to buy a BMW car but have a limited budget. However, as it is a pre-owned car there are certain things you need to look into before buying your favourite BMW car. Buying a used BMW car is one of the best ways to get a quality vehicle without burning a hole in your pocket. As a buyer, you should ensure you are buying the best one in good condition. There are certain tips you need to consider when buying a used or pre-owned car.

Panels – You are highly advised to check the wing and door panels of the car. If you are an avid fan of a car, you should know the small gaps between the panels should be of the same size. If you find the gaps are of different sizes, there is every possibility it has gone through some significant repairs. Painting and finishing – It is vital that the car has the painting done consistently. BMW car has suffered significant damage if the painting is inconsistent. Apart from this, the used BMW in Mumbai should also have a clear coat finish. Test the Mileage It is of paramount importance that you test the mileage of the pre owned BMW cars in UK the BMW cars with excessive mileage are prone to breakdown. This further leads to paying hefty repair bills later on. You should also check the service records and other documents ensure the cars history are correct .

Keep Your Options Open

Inspect the Tires

It is of paramount importance that you keep your options open when buying a BMW car. Some people go for the car that catches the eye first, only to regret later on. In order to ensure you do not follow the same steps, you are advised to inspect and examine every BMW car before signing on the dotted lines. There is every possibility the next car will have much better features and specifications than the one you are planning to buy.

Not many buyers tend to pay attention to this aspect. It is vital you inspect the tires of the BMW used cars in UK, whether they are in good condition. You can keep one trick in mind, ensure the tires have good tread and are not bald. These are some vital tips you need to consider when purchasing used BMW cars in UK. Get in touch with a reliable local dealer for some great offers. Seek expert help if you have to, after all, you are the one who is paying!

Trims or alloys? Whether you drive a Corsa or a Celica, one of the first things we all notice are the wheels. Your paintwork could be polished to perfection but if your wheels don't look good, then all of that “Wash on, Wash Off” was a waste of time. The question you need to ask yourself is, Alloys or Wheel Trims?

Even the most expensive Alloy wheel can be replicated and a plastic copy found for £30 will fool any passer by, but that isn't important. Owning a set of Alloys is the driver clearly saying “This is my car and it looks this good because of me” Both have good points but the bottom line is, one is affordable and will look great. The other will cost you but you'll look good and feel great By Rob McCauley Motaman

Although seen as a cheap Imitation, Over the years I've sold many Hub Caps, that not only pass as Alloys but define a Vehicles entire look. They are cheap and when damaged easy to replace. An Alloy wheel on the other hand is something personal.

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta lifts off for 2016 Nightglow and Fireworks Finales Late night visitors can take in the spectacle of the famous nightglows, a stunning sight with 30 teams lighting up their balloons in time to music as night falls. The Night Glows take place on Thursday 11th August and Saturday 13th August at approximately 9.15pm. As the balloons finish their performance, the skies light up over Ashton Court Estate to spectacular fireworks by Skyburst at 9:30 pm on both nights.

Bristol will play host to Europe’s largest ballooning event, an amazing spectacle and FREE experience for the whole family from Thursday 11th – Sunday 14th August 2016. Over 100 hot air balloons will take off from Ashton Court Estate at dawn and dusk, and light up the skies at night with evening balloon glows. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta features four days of colourful hot-air balloon displays, with half a million visitors gathering in the rolling hills of Ashton Court to watch balloons of all shapes and sizes lift off over the City of Bristol. Entertainment for all the family, throughout the day, includes aerial displays, fairground rides, delicious food stalls and bars, balloon tethering, model aircraft displays, experiential activities and a local music stage.

For visitors planning on driving the event, this year, car parking tickets will only be available to purchase in advance and the earlier tickets are booked the better the rate. Currently Early Bird car parking tickets are available for £7.50 for a standard ticket and £12.00 for a premium ticket. Those with car parking tickets must arrive at the site by 5pm on the day of entry to guarantee access to the event. Details of alternative travel and transport routes will be available from the website shortly.

Watch spectacular balloon ascents up close Visit the fiesta on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6am for ‘Breakfast and Balloons’, watching the hot air balloons take to the sky as the sun rises with a morning coffee and bacon sandwich. For the evening ascents, visitors are encouraged to arrive early to get a good spot to watch pilots inflate the balloons and take off en masse at 6pm. Visitors looking for a sneak peek at the special shapes can watch them ascend for the first time on Thursday night at 6pm.
