Rest In Peace Kaylum Ryan It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the very courageous Kaylum Ryan. Kaylum, aged 5, put up a very brave fight to the very end but the Neuroblastoma. The (rare children’s cancer) took its toll and he shut his eyes for the last time on 6 August 2016. Kaylum, just like the Super Hero's he adored showed such strength, courage and fighting spirit. Many for his caring, loving and beautiful ways will remember him. A memorial page has been set up in his name to make sure he will never be forgotten by those who loved and knew him. Donations can be made on http:/ crowdfunding.justgiving.com/theresa-damsell

GOVERNMENT
There is no doubt that Bristol is a wonderful City that we are all rightly proud of, but one area that still lets us down is our poor public transport system. Sadly we are constrained by First Group who appear to be more interested in their shareholders than providing Bristol with the 21st Century transport system it so desperately needs.
Having a first rate public transport system is not just about the mass movement of commuters! They use the excuse that it make another one of their services (bus service 50) more punctual and reliable, so the according to them the best way to make their services operate on time is to axe some of their other services? You could not make it up! Anyhow we have launched an online petition: http://save51bus.weebly.com/ please sign it to send First Bus a message about saving our local bus services.
Having a first rate public transport system is not just about the mass movement of commuters (although this is important), but also linking up our local communities and of course improving local air quality. It is estimated that over 200 Bristolians die every year from the affects of poor air quality in parts of our City, this needs to be tackled as a major public health issue (our new Mayor promised in his election to do so, but is now reneging on this). Locally, First Bus are cutting services, as you may know the 36 bus service was 'rerouted' away from Callington Road Hospital cutting off patients, staff and visitors from the bus network altogether, forcing patients, their visitors and NHS staff to either drive there or make a very long walk to the Bath or Wells Road. I am discussing with the Airport Bus providers (who travel past the Hospital/ Tesco site) the possibility of them stopping close by to pick up passengers.
So where does our newly elected Mayor sit on these local bus service cuts? Who knows as he is launching a consultation, so much for decisive action then?

40 years or harmony The Bristol Fashion club is a member of our national ladies’ barbershop organisation LABBS (Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers), which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. To enable all LABBS member clubs to get involved in the celebrations, LABBS devised a scroll, carried in a “Beacon of Harmony”. It is touring round the UK, passing from club to club and gathering the signatures of the clubs’ chairladies as it goes. Recently it came to the Bristol area travelling from Cardiff in the care of the ladies of Cardiff Style. As there are three clubs in the immediate Bristol area we had one giant party on August 11th to celebrate the Beacon’s arrival. It was passed on by Cardiff Style to Bristol Fashion (who are based in South Bristol and North Somerset and wear pink polo shirts), Fascinating Rhythm (based in the Cotswolds, in black T shirts) and Avon Harmony (at home in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire, in lilac T-shirts). The Avon club, formerly the Avon Belles, were in fact one of the 7 founding clubs of LABBS. So with everybody assembled, each chorus was able to showcase its favourite songs for the others to enjoy, and then all of us sang some songs together and enjoyed the buffet before we finally got round to cutting the splendid cake.
You may be wondering who the two men in the photo are and what they are doing (apart from helping to cut the cake) among the chorus chairladies: they are (from l to r) Craig Kehoe, the chorus director of Bristol Fashion and Alex de Bruin, who directs Avon Harmony. Next to Alex, the second lady in the black T-shirt is Jo Dean, who directs Fascinating Rhythm. We don’t get to keep the Beacon and scroll for very long: on Wednesday 24th August representatives of the choruses travelled to Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, to pass the Beacon over to Cleeve Harmony on the next stage of its journey. The Beacon will finish its national travels at the LABBS annual Convention in Harrogate at the end of October. If you would like a group to sing for you at a society or club meeting, or a special celebration, or if you'd like to sing with us, contact Bristol Fashion via our website:www.bristol-fashion.org.uk.

When they got there, the cupboard was bare... Have your say on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/Thewordonthestreetbristol Did the previous Mayor George Ferguson know that he was unlikely to be re-elected Mayor of Bristol last May? It is the question being asked in City Hall/the Council House given the difficulties the current Mayor Marvin Rees and his Cabinet have faced trying to find out the city's true financial position over recent months. It wasn't helped by the previous City Director Nicola "9 jobs" Yates digging in and staying around until the end of July, but now there is an Interim Chief Executive in post and an interim Chief Finance Officer, the real figures are coming to light.
Plus over the next 3 years the current Conservative Government, supported in its vicious Austerity drive by its Liberal Democrat allies until May 2015, the City Council has to find a further £60 million due to changes in the Rate Support Grant (RSG). Ought I to mention here yet again that Bristol is the only city that contributes to the Treasury more than it gets back? So Mayor Marvin Rees will shortly set out for London to put Bristol's case for more funding to Government Ministers; best of luck to him - I mean it most sincerely. Meanwhile, the Cabinet will be seeking budgetary savings whilst trying to maintain 'life and limb' services like Adult and Childrens care, both of which are increasing in demand.
Figures are boring, but if you or I ran our households with no apparent planning to meet costs and bills. just hoping for the best, we'd very soon land in deep do -do. And that, in a nutshell, is the Council's current financial position. The Labour ruling group of Councillors with its "rainbow" allies from other political parties in Cabinet inherited £36 million of savings to be made, but further detailed work has revealed it is now £44 million, with no plan in place.
I have suggested to my MP that she tries to get in a Question at Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQ's) in Parliament along the following lines; "given the many statutory duties placed on Local Authorities by Central Government, how would the Prime Minister square the circle of huge reductions in funding annually to Local Government to carry out those statutory duties?" Our vulnerable Older and Disabled Adults and our Children needing care and support here in Bristol would like to hear her answer. Yes, there was a much-vaunted 'Change Management Strategy’ that seemingly has delivered £2 million instead of the £16 million predicted. Call that budgeting?

Is my cat suffering from cystitis? Cystitis can be both chronic or come on all of a sudden (acute). Much like in humans, it can be a very uncomfortable and painful condition if not treated.
There are a number of things you can do at home to help prevent your cat from developing cystitis:
Cystitis is essentially inflammation of the bladder. Cats are more prone to developing cystitis than dogs and it generally affects females more frequently than males.
Help to reduce stress in the household as much as possible – ensure there are plenty of ‘safe’ hiding places for them to hide away
The symptoms of cystitis can include: pain when passing urine, straining, blood in the urine, I nappropriate urination and more frequent urination.
Have plenty of clean litter trays around the house
It is thought that stress is often a major factor in developing cystitis. As you know, cats can get stressed by the slightest thing, such as minor changes in their environment, visitors or even a new cat nearby in the area. Cats who suffer from diabetes are also at more risk of developing cystitis due to higher levels of glucose and protein in the urine which can prompt the growth of bacteria.
Provide fresh clean water on a daily basis Consider using a feline pheromone diffuser If your cat is displaying the symptoms of cystitis, book an appointment to see your vet at Brislington Veterinary Surgery (0117 971 5115) for treatment. However, if you notice your male cat straining to urinate, please contact your vet immediately as this could be a sign of a blocked bladder, which is a veterinary emergency.

Sponsored slimmer's Race for Life Local slimmers have raised £1150.79 for Cancer Research UK after they laced up their trainers and swapped their usual meeting place for Redcatch Park, to hold their own Slimming World does Race for Life event on 23rd July.
It’s also a cause very close to my heart and it was really important that I crossed that finish line, however long it took me.
Before joining Slimming World, many of the slimmers did very little, but after getting support to become more active, the local groups and thier Slimming World Consultants, all managed to complete the race with big smiles on their faces. The group also invited the people of South Bristol, their friends and family members to join in. The event saw around 60 people take part, lots of spectators cheered the entrants on as they crossed the finish line. The event aimed to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight can improve health, including reducing the risk of developing ten types of cancer, and raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK. The group’s race was part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups between July 9th and 24th. The race was not competitive, and those taking part could choose the distance they’d like to cover.
I used be so daunted just by the thought of exercise – I’d hated it since my school days. With Slimming World’s Body Magic programme I learnt that the key is to start small and find something that you enjoy doing, and I’ve found that’s the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time as feeling absolutely fantastic.
Sarah who runs Slimming World groups every week in Hengrove and Whitchurch, says her members thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Slimming World does Race for Life. She says: "It was a fantastic event – the atmosphere was electric! Everyone was so supportive of each other, just as they are whenever my group gets together, and we saw young, old, male and female participants enter, all with a broad range of abilities and fitness levels. Entrants could run, walk, or skip across the finish line – whatever they wanted – as long as they enjoyed it we didn’t mind at all! She continues: "I’m so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a Slimming World group like ours can be. Many of my members wouldn’t have dreamed of even wearing a pair of trainers before they lost weight, and now look at them! It’s all thanks to the amazing support they give each other in group that has helped them to lose weight by eating more healthily and build their confidence and find more energy to move more each day. Now they’re all fantastic role models to their friends and families."
There’s no rule that says being active has to Involve a gym or running shorts – walking to collect the kids from school, gardening or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough. What’s important is that you do something almost every day. I definitely wouldn’t have done something like this before I found Slimming World. Since losing weight though, I’m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I’m so proud of myself and I know my fellow group members, friends and family are too."

CELEBRATE BROMLEY HEATH’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE Bromley Heath United will be hosting a dinner and dance at the newly redeveloped Ashton Gate stadium on Saturday, November 19th (7pm) to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary.
“We are also very honoured that this will be one of the first large events to be held in the newly built Lansdown Suite.”
Established in 1966, the oldest junior football club in Bristol is hiring the recently launched Lansdown Stand to commemorate 50 years since the club first started as a single team in a local North Bristol Park.
After costs, all proceeds generated from the evening will be shared between Bromley Heath, Bristol City Community Trust and Bristol Rovers Community Trust, all of whom will reinvest the funds back into the community to support the development of local grassroots sport.
The club now boast some of its own great facilities and has over 300 members where they start as young as four and play right through to the club’s newly added Senior section.
Community Trust director Dan White said: “To keep a grassroot club running successfully for 50 years is a brilliant accomplishment and I must commend Bromley Heath for their tireless efforts.
The event is open to anyone aged 18+ who would like to celebrate the local football clubs long-term establishment and achievements, while spending an evening amongst club representatives and celebrity guests in the brand new prestigious facilities at Ashton Gate.
“It’s a privilege to be supporting such an event and we wish the club the best of luck for the next 50 years!”
“We are delighted to be celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary. It’s an achievement everyone associated with the club is extremely proud of,” said club chairman Jamie Andrews-Britton.
Tickets for the event are priced at £50 per person. Guests will be provided with a three-course meal, live music and a prestige auction. Corporate packages are also available. For further information on this event or to purchase tickets, please call 07523 944690 or email bromleyheathunited@aol.com.
“The dinner and dance evening will be a fantastic occasion where various members of the community can come together to celebrate Bromley Heath’s achievements and the development of local amateur sport across Bristol.

The green Toyota Prius gets the third spot with its spacious cabin and big boot. It’s got excellent fuel economy and low emission, which makes up for the rather disappointing interior.
Top 5 Hatchbacks to consider when looking for a family car If you’re in the market for a new family hatchback below is a rundown on the top five picked by 1st Gear. Top of the picks is the Volkswagen Golf hatchback, which is described by the use of words like ‘refined’, ‘comfortable’ and ‘fun’. As most Volkswagen cars it’s reliable and well built and holds it value well, it comes with an array of safety kit as standard and both looks and feels good to drive. It’s only let down by its rather conservative appearance.
In at number two comes the Skoda Octavia, which has more space than the VW Golf and offers great value for money. But the models on the lower end
Forth in the top five is the Hyundai i30, which is the cheapest of the top five cars and also comes with a great warranty package. It’s described as a solid car but a bit bland.
Last of the top five cars is the Mazda 3, which is described, as funky and fun with good resale value.
So if you’re in the market for a new family hatchback, you probably won’t go wrong by checking out one of the above

D.I.Y. scratch repair tips For any driver proud of their car, one of the most frustrating things is the inevitable scratch. Even the slightest of marks will irk the driver until he or she is willing to pay through the nose to have it sorted, but if you do it yourself it doesn't have to be expensive!
For those with marks which run a little deeper, you'll need some primer, colour coded paint, lacquer and a few sheets of Wet n Dry paper to smooth your work after each stage, all of this can be found at your local car accessories store. Keep in mind that when doing this, the most important thing is patience; pay attention to the details and you'll find that with little effort your own work can be just as good as a professionals
Most light scratches can be smoothed out with a Colour specific T-Cut or a product called Colour magic; the trick is to run your fingers over the area, if you can't feel it grab yourself some polish.

Home Care in Bristol Lay Assessors needed RSVP Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme Lay assessors are part of a team visiting people in their homes across the city that have home care services, to talk to them and find out if the quality of the service is satisfactory. People that need carers to come to their homes are mostly older, frail and can be in very poor health. For most, the carers are their lifeline. Many are isolated and vulnerable and may find it hard to complain or sort out any problems with their care arrangements.
The Lay Assessor scheme works in partnership with the council and forms part of their monitoring process. Bristol City Council says Lay assessors provide an invaluable independent view of the quality of home care services and provide a voice for service users who are less able to represent themselves This voluntary role is interesting, rewarding and flexible. You would undertake an agreed number of visits in a specific period. Full training is provided along with regular opportunities to meet and share experience with other lay assessors. If you are interested in becoming a lay assessor we would be pleased to talk about the scheme in more detail and will arrange to meet with you if you feel you would like to join us. Please email homecare@rsvp-west.org.uk or telephone 0117 922 4392 and leave your contact details and either Paula or Ken will call you back.

The power of words Words carry a lot of power. We can make somebody's day are you seeing nice words, and in the way they are said. In today's world, it seems that not always nice things on portrayed, with either visual means or through the spoken word. To help to change this. Paul we need to do is to just be mindful of how we speak to other people. Take a step back, and view someone's situation as though it was happening to you. And then think how you would like to be spoken to. Words can also be used to explain how we feel. As in through poetry, or other forms of writing, such as his story or maybe even lyrics for a song. Also being thankful for the things we have in our lives, and even a simple thing such as a lovely day, or maybe seeing a beautiful sunset, or any attitude of gratitude is always good, for others and ourselves. With peace and Blessings Marie
