Bristol has a new mayor! Time for Change.. GOVERNMENT
To the relief of many of us, Bristol has a new Mayor, Marvin Rees. Policy changes when the leadership changes, so it is becoming clear already that the new Mayor has a vastly different style and priorities than the old one. Marvin Rees won the Mayoral election with a substantial majority plus, for election geeks like me, a far higher percentage of the electorate came out to vote than did the first time. Marvin's top priority is Housing and his first appointment was Cllr Paul Smith with a brief to tackle the lack of house building in the city under Mayor Ferguson, especially the need for more social and affordable housing. Those like my daughter struggling to buy their first home or the thousands on the Housing list are especially hard hit at the moment. So, there will be big changes there.
The latest Metrobust debacle is the closure of Stoke Lane and lanes on the M32 affecting 30,000 people daily who travel from the city to UWE and those who work at the MoD, Abbey Wood, Filton and Bradley Stoke on the northern fringes. Stoke Lane will be closed in UWE Freshers' week in September. This will cause absolute traffic chaos. It seems that the needs of "We, the People" come last when it comes to getting about our daily business. Is this what really did for Mayor Ferguson at the Ballot Box? Mayor Rees has appointed the same Lead Councillor for Transport, Cllr Mark Bradshaw; let's hope that they take note and change tack for the good of Bristol and its people. Editorial by Eileen Means
But I can't help wondering how great an impact the former Mayor's transport policies had on his unpopularity. His championing of cycling and the expensive cycle lanes in response to strident lobbying from Sustrans (that he helped to set up) was not very popular in ordinary areas outside the Gloucester road. It is interesting that some of his key allies from the Green Party like Asst Mayor Radice from Bishopston lost their seats, indeed the "green surge" lost its impetus in 2016. Was this the revenge of the car lobby? No-one driving around this city either by bike or by motor is unaffected by the fiasco that is Metrobus; gridlock in the city centre became a regular occurrence in the months and weeks leading up to the election. Bristolians are suspicious of the promises of "jam tomorrow" i.e. we will love Metrobus eventually, despite getting home hours late with amazing frequency today.

Weight loss expert stikes gold A weight loss expert from Bristol has struck Gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 260 people to lose weight at her local groups every week. Sarah Bryant, who runs groups in Hengrove and Whitchurch every week, has been awarded ‘Gold’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and the super service she provides to those members. The accolade is given to Slimming World Consultants who consistently have 100 or more members in their group over several months, and who provide such exceptional service that members come back week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It represents the highest level of service in slimming and makes Sarah one of the most successful of Slimming World’s 4,000 Consultants, meaning Bristol is home to some of the best slimming support in the UK.
Obesity is at record levels everywhere, many people are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. It’s never been more important that people who struggle with their weight get the support to make the changes needed to lead healthier lives – both for themselves and their children, too." To join one of Sarah’s groups, which are held every Tuesday at 9.30am at Hengrove Community Centre or pop along to Bridge Farm School every Wednesday at 7.30pm (the 5.30pm session is currently full) or give Sarah a call on 07879 443888.
Sarah says: "I am delighted to have received the ‘Gold’ award. I absolutely love my job. I’m passionate about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight and seeing them succeed is reward enough, but being given this recognition for the Whitchurch group really is the icing on the cake. This award belongs to the Whitchurch group’s 180 plus members. They’re the ones who make our group the success that it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, above all, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. They make the group a fun, buzzy place to be and I can safely say I always look forward to going to work. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. "The Whitchurch group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in South Bristol. Together, members have lost an amazing 255 stones so far this year.

Lavers take off in Bristol Arnold Laver,a long established family business specialising in timber and timber based products, are proud to announce that their new Bristol Depot is now operational. Located in Bristol, within the site boundary of Filton Airfield, this former aircraft production facility, where Concorde and the Brabazon were manufactured, provides an ideal location for distributing timber and timber-based products into the South-West of the Country. The business has been delivering materials into the South West, via their Reading and Birmingham Depots, for quite some time now, but the introduction of this new dedicated facility will mean that we can offer a next-day service to existing and new customers that are either based locally, or working in the area. This new distribution Depot represents a significant investment and helps to further enhance their reputation as one of the leading timber specialists in the UK. Continuing the principal of having significant stocks of materials at regional distribution locations across the country, backed up by product experts who are both knowledgeable and helpful.
Andrew Laver, Group Managing Director commented ‘We are absolutely delighted to have opened this new facility, which will further improve the service that we can offer our customers in the region. We are confident that our ethos of providing a large stock-holding, together with a quick and efficient delivery service, via our own fleet of vehicles, will help our customers deliver their projects on-time and in-full. It is also appropriate that the Depot is based within a former aircraft hangar, when my grandfather Arnold Laver was a pilot, who used his gratuity from the Royal Flying Corps, to establish this business in 1920’.Initially the Depot will hold extensive stock of Softwoods, Hardwoods, Panel Products, Decorative Surfaces, Doors and Joinery Products, all of which we know are popular with our customers on a day-to-day basis. During the Summer this will be supplemented by the addition of roof-truss and timber-engineered floor production facilities. David King, the Depot Director for Bristol added ‘We have listened to our customers and responded by developing a Depot in the region, so that we can offer an improved response-time. We know that by making it easier for our customers to trade with us, we are more likely to see demand grow. We also appreciate that as the Depot develops, we are able to contribute to the local economy, providing opportunities for local people to join us and develop their career as our business grows.’

Go and sing! You may have been thinking for some time about joining a choir (or, as the barbershop world calls it, a chorus). It’s all very well for people to say “well, go ahead, then”, but it’s not as easy as that, is it? That first step through the door takes a bit of thought and preparation – and perhaps even courage. If you’re an experienced choral singer you probably already have some idea of which type of choir you’d like to join. If you have some musical background and can read music, it shouldn’t be too hard.
Look on their website and perhaps phone or e-mail the secretary to find out if there’s a member who lives near you. If they could give you a lift you won’t have to search for the venue or walk through that door on your own. And don’t worry, nobody is going to ask you to sing in front of the whole choir! Even experienced singers have been known to quake in their shoes at that prospect.
But what if you’re a beginner, or new to Bristol? You could do a bit of research first. Your local library has a list of organisations in the city as well as posters and flyers about concerts. Look for these in local shops and community centres, too. If you can attend some concerts, they’ll give you an idea of the size of the choir and what they sing, the mix of ages (or not) and when and where they rehearse. If you’re invited to take part in the warm-up exercises, jump at the chance. You’ll soon find out how comfortable you are and how friendly the other members are to a newbie. At Bristol Fashion our director Craig or his assistant Caroline will first assess your voice to find out which part would be best for you. Then you’ll be given a song to learn. You get a recording of your voice part, as well as the sheet music, so it’s OK if you can’t read the dots. You can take all the time you need to learn your part and your section leader will help. You’ll have the chance to sing it with the chorus. And that last point is quite an important consideration: can you get to rehearsals? And can you attend on a regular basis? If a choir rehearses on a Friday evening and you frequently go away for long weekends, then honestly, that choir is not for you!
When you feel ready you’ll be able to sing it to the director in a quartet – with your section leader standing just behind you to support you. If it doesn’t go right the first time, you get another chance! So what is there to lose? Join a choir or chorus today and enjoy singing and friendship!
Many choirs hold an open night for people who are interested in joining, but you can always ask if you could come along to listen to a normal rehearsal.

Ask the vet What foods are toxic to pets? Whilst it’s very tempting to share food with our pets, particularly when they give you those ‘please feed me’ eyes, there are some foods are toxic to animals and could make them unwell. Chocolate is the most well-known poisonous food. Chocolate contains theobromine which can affect the heart and nervous system. Depending on how much chocolate and what type was eaten by your pet (dark chocolate is particularly dangerous), you may see symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle tremors or seizures. Onions and garlic can cause digestive upsets and anaemia and grapes, raisins and currants can cause kidney failure. Caffeine can cause reactions very similar to chocolate poisoning and can include restlessness, rapid breathing and heart palpitations. All parts of the avocado are toxic to rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles due to a substance called persin. Persin can cause heart failure in rodents and breathing difficulties in birds. Contrary to popular belief, cats shouldn’t be drinking cow’s milk.
Cats and dogs cannot digest lactose effectively and it can cause nasty digestive upsets. This includes excessive amounts of cheese and butter. Xylitol (artificial sweeteners), often found in sweets and chewing gum, can make an animal’s blood sugar drop too quickly and cause liver failure. Macadamia Nuts are particularly toxic to dogs causing symptoms such as weakness, depression, tremors, vomiting and increased body temperature (hyperthermia). Too much salt can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, depression, tremors, hyperthermia or seizures. Frequently feeding your pet raw fish can cause a vitamin B deficiency, resulting in seizures. If your pet has eaten any of the above foods, always seek veterinary advice. Some will affect your pet more rapidly than others so it’s always best to check what to do next. Contact Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 9715115 for advice or in the event of an emergency call our 24 hour veterinary hospital in Whitchurch on 01275 832410.

Local businessman Kurt Davis is calling on residents of Bristol to help them win a share of £1,000,000 in prizes and pitch their business to Richard Branson as part of the Virgin Media Business VOOM 2016 competition. VOOM 2016 relies on public votes at www.vmbvoom.com/pitches/securist-1 to shortlist the UK and Ireland’s most exciting entrepreneurs, and Kurt Davis, 28 from Bristol believes SECURIST has the idea to impress the public. Kurt David says: “SECURIST is a local Bristol security company where the customers are our main focus. My vision was to create a security company that never failed to think of innovative solutions to security issues and consistently delivered outstanding customer service. I wanted to create a service that was completely dependable, reliable, socially responsible and competitive in its pricing. Since the start of SECURIST the business has gone from strength to strength, one highlight for the company is the creation of CSS, Community Secure Scheme.

Walking is great for fitness
Walking for exercises is a good way to start if you have a lot of weight to lose. Walking may be the only practical option for those who have trouble moving around, and haven’t exercised for a long period of time. There is no need to go far to benefit from walking for exercise at this point. Just do your best to go as far as you can each day. Ask about a sensible eating plan and talk your plans over with your doctor before you start working out if you are morbidly obese. You may have trouble getting over a weight loss plateau if you use walking for exercise. In this case, you may need to go with a more advanced walking plan. You can add weights to either your wrists or your ankles as you walk, or you may need to increase your speed while working out. Remember that the healthier and slimmer you become, the more effort you need to put into any workout to continue to lose weight. You also have to follow some guidelines if you want to use walking for exercise. You can start going up and down hills as a part of your routine if you want to really add some intensity to your walking for exercise plan. Don’t forget to keep the pace fast. You don’t need to run, but make sure that you are giving yourself a true workout. You should walk fast enough so that you have trouble holding a conversation. You are walking too slowly for any real benefit if you can talk easily. Remember to make time to walk each and every day. You are only getting three days worth of exercise if you only walk for three days every week. Walking for exercise is a good idea, but don’t get lazy about it or you will not reach your fitness goals.
