GOVERNMENT

Mayor Decides On More Cuts Has someone declared this International month for petitions? There is one to do with the Mayor's decision to cut all maintenance money to our local parks, his threat to our Libraries and the closure of Jubilee pool.

There is going to be a monthly market and hopefully a mural painted in the Council car park, improved bus shelters and street furniture improvements. All this activity has been supported by the local neighbourhood partnership - another service facing cuts under Mayor Marvin. Those of you who use the Bath Road will know the derelict eyesore that is know locally as the John Peer factory. Following a lot of pressure from me the site has now been sold to Sovereign housing to build 130 homes some of which will be much needed affordable homes.

There is no doubt that the Council is now in a major financial crisis and many of feel the Mayor has not got a grip on the way forward. So I would urge all Bristolians to sign these petitions and support those campaigning to save our local services.

I know the residents who live close to this site will be relieved when this local blot on the landscape is redeveloped. With the Paintworks development and the old HTV studio and now this site we have had a lot of new development locally. Anyhow I am off to put the kettle on, remember to sign those petitions!

On a happy note I attended a recent meeting of the new Sandy Park residents and business group and we discussed ways in which to promote and improve this much valued local shopping area.

Writing a will probably isn’t top of anyone’s list of New Year’s Resolutions – who wants to start 2017 with such a grim project? Indeed, according to a 2011 poll in the US, 60% of Americans would rather undergo root canal treatment, do their taxes or abstain from sex for a month than set down their final wishes. However, a US psychologist has suggested that we’re all lying to ourselves by procrastinating over writing our wills; instead, sitting down and planning our estates could empower us... Considering death is one of the few certainties of life, why do so many of us put off writing a will? Apparently, it’s all to do with the very human instinct to deceive ourselves. In doing so, we avoid uncomfortable realities – a coping mechanism that Dr. Cortney S. Warren, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, covers in her book Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Psychology of Self-Deception. “Humans are masters of self-deception,’ Dr Warren writes. ‘We don’t like to think of ourselves as liars; it hurts us too much to admit. So, we lie to ourselves about that, too.

As a clinical psychologist, I am frequently confronted with the fact that we all lie to ourselves. I believe that it is our biggest obstacle to living a fulfilling life.” According to Warren, avoiding writing a will is a good example of us lying to ourselves. By the very act of writing one, we are acknowledging something we find very difficult to face; our own mortality. In an article for Psychology Today however, Warren does highlight the feeling of empowerment which writing a will provides us with. “The main reason to write a will is to give yourself a voice,” she says. “It is actually a wonderful gift to those you love to have a will in place so that they can celebrate your life after you die—not become engrossed in legal battles over your stuff. Maybe it’s time to rethink your New Year’s Resolutions list for 2017 – and add writing a will to the top of it. To stick to resolutions, psychologists advise breaking goals into small steps. Take the first one today by speaking to your local will writing experts at Legally Secure Ltd, where the cost of writing a will starts at as little as £135. For more information, and to start 2017 with a little of the self-empowerment which writing a will can bring, call Legally Secure on 0117 322 6322 or email info@legallysecure.co.uk.

We Are BristoliansStop Trying To Set Us Against Each Other

The real problem is that we, the public are being ripped off in my opinion for basic needs like heating, rent and, a regular grouse on this page, public transport costs that in this country are far higher than in other countries. Npower have just announced increases of 15% in some cases and the other Utilities are lining up to raise tariffs and pay greater profits to their shareholders. A terrific organisation has been set up here in Bristol called Acorn that is fighting for Tenants Rights against unscrupulous landlords and for more Affordable housing on sites such as the Chocolate Factory.

Yet another poll, “research” project or whatever – a finding by a “Think Tank” at any rate – is currently one of the headlines in the news: ‘Older People are £20 better off per week’. Well whoopety –doooo! What should they spend it on? A whole £20! Now I’m not complaining at all, but the sub-text is that this is at the expense of working families i.e. trying to set the generations apart. Older people are more likely to own their own home and to have paid off their mortgage, but this is not always the case by any means. It ignores that many, especially those who don’t own their own home, are still having to choose between eating and heating – as are many families. The report says that many old people are still working, overlooking that many of them have to, just like families with parents having to work if they are to have a decent standard of living.

All older people that I know spend firstly on their children and grandchildren if they have a bit spare. They help with clothes, especially shoes, or rent if they can afford to. They spend it on better and more local things than Government would, helping younger families to cope.

So the message is; Stop trying to divide the generations. Stop trying to set us against each other. If Older People have a bit of spare cash, better they spend it here in Bristol on keeping warm or helping their families that Government takes it away in higher taxes – because that’s what they are after! Here are the top tips that may take time to deliver, yet they are genuinely easy, and will help you make effective changes in your small business finances. 1.Change Your Accounts Receivable Procedure A vital component to guaranteeing sufficient income is invoicing and getting payments on time. In case you invoice your clients on a free and irregular calendar, you will get paid for a free and irregular schedule. Make a standard charging approach and policy that incorporates clear terms for payments, and describes the procedure you will take to gather unpaid amount, then follow through. 2. Just Remove Out-Dated Or Zero Usage Inventory Obsolete or Unused inventory doesn't just consume up room, it additionally squanders cash. Lead an inventory investigation a couple times each year to check what you have put away that you don't see utilising or selling in the following 10 to 12 months. The majority of your stock/inventory that is in good working shape can be sold at lower rates, or even sent back to the seller, giving your business brisk bottom line rejuvenation.

5. Credit Card Processing Fees Should Be Negotiated Credit Card organisations are infamous for wearing down business income. Search for best rates before you finalise to particular handling expenses. If you’re getting the services of a supplier, then you can negotiate your rates by giving them details on what their rivals are charging. 6. Know Your Cash Flow Cash flow is the procedure of cash moving in and out your company. At any rate, you ought to know at the end of the day what you’re owed and what you need to pay in the coming days. With this sort of knowledge and awareness about your business funds can help you get ready for and rapidly adjust to unforeseen circumstances that may cost money spending you never anticipated. 7. Get A Payroll Software Managing your payroll can be a tiring and timeconsuming task. Remember, time is money for small and growing businesses. So, you need to invest in payroll software that can manage your payroll operations , while you focus on the core business operations of your company.

3. Practice Environmental Awareness – Go Green Making your small business more environmentally friendly shouldn't be just a PR (Public Relations) strategy or something you consider once a year, but it should additionally be an approach to enhance your funds over the long haul. What's more, it's easy to do. Switch off the gadgets while shutting down the office every evening, utilise energy efficient lighting, reuse and recycle items to cut expenses. 4. Purchase Used or Go For Lease Purchasing new hardware is awesome in case you're getting flushed with money. However, most of the small business venture proprietors aren't getting the same treatment. You can choose to lease what you require rather than purchasing and utilising the all-important money. Leasing additionally provides you a chance to redesign your hardware at a low amount, and it frees up working cash you require in the everyday operations of your company.

Car Tax Is Changing From April 2017 It didn’t take long for us to become used to not displaying a tax disc in our windscreen, despite them having been around for nearly a century. In fact, while the tax disc acted as a good visual confirmation that a car is taxed, with Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) records now stored digitally, it became obsolete. The demise of the tax disc is just one of the ways that technology has changed the way that legislation is enforced. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, using information stored on a national road-tax database, now usually initiate convictions for road-tax evasion. It was only a matter of time before the labour-intensive paper-based system of tax discs was brought up to date, and along with the disappearance of discs, the way VED is calculated is changing, too. The VED changes due on 1 April 2017 will be the final step in a total overhaul of the UK car tax system

How will the new road tax rules affect me? The disappearance of the tax disc brought with it another significant change. Previously, if the tax disc of a car for sale hadn’t yet expired, it could be sold along with the car. With tax already in place, this made it simple for a buyer to simply arrange Insurance over the phone to drive away legally in his new car. With the tax disc now gone, it’s no longer possible for road tax to be transferred to a subsequent owner. Instead, it’s up to the owner to apply for a refund of any remaining tax (allow up to six weeks for a refund to be processed). It’s also up to the buyer to tax the car themselves immediately; you can do this online through a relatively simple process and it’s still possible to visit a Post Office to arrange your car tax.

It has also become possible to pay your road tax with a monthly Direct Debit, while the annual and six-monthly payment options continue. The DVLA automatically sends out renewal reminders (called V11 forms), so remembering to tax your car is easy, despite the disappearance of tax discs. V11 forms also have a Direct Debit form to fill in on the back, which you can then take to a Post Office if you’d rather not pay online.

Car tax bands until April 2017 At the moment, the amount of road tax you pay is determined by your car’s carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions, measured in grams per kilometre (g/km). There are two levels of payment: one applies to the first year of a new car’s registration and only has to be paid by the car’s first owner. The second rate is an annual payment that has to be paid each year your car is on the road. Any car that emits under 100g/km is exempt from both of these payments, while cars that emit 130g/ km of CO2 and under are excused from the firstyear payment and only incur the annual fee.

What’s to come in April 2017? From spring next year, the whole road-tax system is changing completely. While CO2 emissions will still play a part, only zero-emission cars will be exempt from the annual charge. This effectively means that if you buy a new petrol or diesel-engine cars after April 2017, you’ll be liable to pay road tax. While the first-year rate will vary based on a car’s CO2 emissions, the annual fee will be a flat rate of £140 for all cars, with an extra £310 annual surcharge applying to all cars costing over £40,000 new. These rates will only apply to cars registered from April 2017 onwards – cars already on the road will continue to be taxed under the old system.

Guide to buying a new or used vehicle Buying a quality used car or van is not as difficult as it may appear. Not all car dealers are out there to sell you a lemon, or to force you to buy services which you may never use. However, you must do your homework before you step onto any dealership to ensure you are fully prepared to negotiate with the dealership to get the best possible deal. Consider these tips when planning to purchase your next used car. They are not in any particular order but you should pay close attention to each one of them.

Narrow down the dealership Use social media sites, like Facebook, Bing, and Google Plus, to do research on local dealerships. See what people are saying about the dealership, its sales staff, after-sales customer service, and the way a dealership handles a complaint. You can also use sites like www.cardealerreviews.co.uk to read comments and feedback from customers.

Determine your budget Before you visit a dealership to test drive a car, consider your spending limit, based on your ability to pay now and in the future. Often, during the sales process, buyers end up purchasing a vehicle that is beyond their budget. So, make sure that you are firm as to how much you want to spend, how much financing you need, how much monthly payment you will be able to handle, and how much down payment you can afford.

You should also ask your friends for referrals and their experience with local dealerships. Nothing comes close to personal experience. If you do decide to visit a dealership, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bring someone with you If you feel intimidated by the car salesperson, then it may be a good idea to take a friend with you to help out during the test drive, finalizing your selection, and price negotiations. Be aware of add-ons that the car salesperson may try to sell you. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and say no when the price is outside of your budget. Don’t be afraid to walk away If not all of your expectations are met, walk away. Even if you feel you are ready to buy, we recommend you take a night to sleep on your decision and make sure it is the vehicle you really want.

Finalize which vehicle you want to buy Before you visit any dealership, you should know the make and model you want to buy. Do your research to make sure the model meets your requirements. Is it the colour, fuel efficiency, personal or family use, or resale value that is important for you? Read Consumer Reports to

Discuss the car, its price, financing costs and other details with your family and friends. Review other dealerships’ websites to see how your selection compares to other vehicles. There is no need to rush. A smart dealer will always have good deals for a willing buyer.

Trims or alloys? Whether you drive a Corsa or a Fiesta, one of the first things we all notice are the wheels. Your paintwork could be polished to perfection but if your wheels don't look good, then all of that “Wash on, Wash Off” was a waste of time. The question you need to ask yourself is, alloys or wheel trims?

Even the most expensive Alloy wheel can be replicated and a plastic copy found for £30 will fool any passer by, but that isn't important. Owning a set of Alloys is the driver clearly saying “This is my car and it looks this good because of me” Both have good points but the bottom line is, one is affordable and will look great. The other will cost you but you'll look good and feel great By Rob McCauley

Although seen as a cheap Imitation, Over the years I've sold many hub caps, that not only pass as Alloys but define a Vehicles entire look. They are cheap and when damaged easy to replace. An alloy wheel on the other hand is something personal.

LOGAN

20th Century Fox sure have something perfect for X -Men fans to get their claws into this month, with the highly-anticipated Logan. The movie – which promises to be fan favourite’s Hugh Jackman last outing as the titular anti-hero Wolverine – is this time taking inspiration from popular comic book arc Old Man Logan, serving up an R-rated side story which sets itself apart from last year’s bombastic XMen: Apocalypse. Even though Logan’s core story centres around an older, much more rugged Wolverine set during a period where mutants are all but extinct, those hoping to see some hardcore berserker action won’t be disappointed – especially when considering the introduction of X-23. “

Who’s X-23?” I hear you ask! Just picture a younger and angstier adamantium-wielding mutant, and you’ll be all good to go.

To celebrate the possible final time we’ll ever see Hugh Jackman snikt on the big screen, Hengrove’s very own Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are giving you the chance to get your mitts on some awesometacular movie merchandise. Check out the competition in this magazine you are reading right now. The Cineworld folk are the best at what they do, and thankfully, what they do is very nice, showing the movie from March 1st onwards. So why not grab some popcorn, and let the Logan wave wash over you. And when you’ve done that, feel free to check out soundcloud.com/ThePictureBlock to find some movie-talking pleasure for your ears. Article by Aaron Potter

Enjoy the film guys, even Professor X won’t see what’s coming.

SPRING EQUINOX

At this time of year, we are now seeing the longer and lighter evenings, and the sunrise is much earlier than it was at winter solstice. This is also a time for planting. Both in the garden or the allotment, or the things that we thought about we would like to achieve at winter solstice, it's now time to start putting down the basics, and planting the seeds of what we want to achieve. So if you would like to celebrate this time, you can very simply either go to a garden, woodland, If the weather is not good be at a window so you can look upon the trees and nature. And simply just become aware of the surroundings of the trees the sky whether it's raining or Sunny I'm just offfor your appreciation. and then just say to the Kosmos, your angels, your guides or whoever, or whatever you feel you connect with, and ask that you be guided and helped to achieve the goal or goals that you wish. Finish with a thank you and blessings to all nature and higher beings. With love and blessings to all of us humans, and all other beings who share this planet. And may our hearts be filled with joy for this wonderful planet and her creatures. Marie
