St Peter’s Hospice Annual Baking Event For Charity Is Back ! This March roll up your sleeves, put on your oven gloves and get baking for St Peter’s Hospice. Every year we host Ready Steady Bake in March, to encourage people to get baking and arrange tea parties and coffee mornings to raise money for St Peter’s. Ready Steady Bake is the annual campaign to raise money for Bristol’s local Hospice. It’s a great excuse for an office cake sale or to get together with friends or family and have a tea party or coffee morning at home. Last year, you all rolled up your sleeves, got out your ingredients and got to work baking up a storm for St Peter’s Hospice and you all raised nearly £10,000. But this year we want to make it bigger and better! It’s Easy All you need to do is make sure you let people know when and where your cake sale is taking place - to do that you can use our Ready, Steady, Bake poster template and send your colleagues, friends and family invitations. You can also spread the word by using Facebook and Twitter, and set up a JustGiving page to sell virtual cakes to those who can’t make it to your event. So if you are a keen baker, or know other people that are, please get in touch for your own Ready Steady Bake pack, full of information and ideas. You can do this by registering for a pack on our website. www.stpeterhospice.org.uk/events or by contacting Jo Plummer on 01275 391430

That’s Why Slimming World Members Go To Iceland Bristol slimmers have been eagerly anticipating the launch this week of a brand new range of frozen ready meals created by Slimming World in association with Iceland. Based on the slimming organisation’s famous Food Optimising eating plan, the new range of meals uses Free Food ingredients and has been developed in response to demand from the club’s 700,000 members. Sarah Bryant, a Slimming World Consultant who runs local Slimming World groups, says: “Slimming World’s goal is to help members develop new healthy eating habits and a new relationship with food, away from high-fat, high-calorie fast foods. At our groups we encourage members to cook from scratch, using everyday foods that you can buy in any supermarket and we have a huge library of recipes both in our publications and online. Cooking healthy, filling meals from scratch is, and always will be, at the heart of Food Optimising. “However, with today’s modern, busy lifestyles there are times when even the best-laid plans to prepare healthy home-cooked meals can be scuppered and my members often tell me that it’s when time is short that they’re most likely to go off track. That’s when they end up grabbing a ready meal that leaves them unsatisfied or having a high-calorie takeaway, because they didn’t have a convenient, delicious, healthy meal to hand.” Setting out to transform the face of the “diet” meals with its Free Food approach, Slimming World has created a food range that is generously portioned, delicious and great value and teamed up with leading frozen food innovator Iceland—one of the few manufactures that could offer the quality, value and generosity Slimming World expects for its members. “This new range of frozen meals is made purely with Free Foods, so they fit perfectly with Slimming World’s plan,” says Sarah. There are eight frozen meals available in the range including: Beef and Red Onion Gravy with a Veg Crush Chicken Pizzaiola Chicken Tikka Masala Hot-smoked Salmon Farfalle Meatballs and Pasta with a Spicy Tomato Sauce Roasted Vegetables Pasta (vegetarian) Singapore Noodles Sweet Potato Curry (vegetarian) Plus: Syn-free Beef and Meatballs (in bags) Syn-free Pork Sausages (in bags) Sarah adds: “Every meal has the recipe printed on the packaging too, so best of all in our groups we’ll be talking about the meals and who’s tried them and then asking who has recreated the recipes at home themselves.” The brand new range of Slimming World meals is available exclusively in Iceland’s 850 stores including from now, priced at £3 per meal, and is also available to order at Iceland.co.uk. For more information please contact Sarah on 07879 443888 Or visit www.slimmingworld.com/foodrange 7. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline.com
You can also join in with one of the two competitions Shop Brislington is running for a chance to win some of the £1,500 worth of prizes on offer.
Community-led trail to celebrate shopping locally in Brislington The Brislington Community Partnership (BCP) has received over £5,000 from Bristol City Council’s Active Neighbourhood Transport Grant scheme to put on a community led shopping trail and get people out and about shopping on foot supporting their local independent traders.
Bristolians and even some local residents are often unaware of the fantastic array of shops and products on offer. Highlights include one of only two stores in the city dedicated to home-brewing, the only sewing machine repair shop in Bristol, an excellent haberdashers which also offers sewing workshops, a cookery school, a shop selling an enormous selection of beads and semi-precious gems and a specialist knitting shop. All these places make Brislington a destination to visit.
For many people in Bristol, Brislington is a place to pass through on the way to Bath, however, local shops and residents have teamed up this month to create the shop Brislington trail and are making a big noise about it. Shop Brislington is a local initiative promoting the flourishing independent businesses in the area and encouraging people to shop locally. They want people to know that Brislington is a shopping destination with a difference. The trail runs from 7th-31st March 2015 and includes 49 local independent businesses with a fantastic mixture of destination-shops and plenty of places to do the grocery shopping. The trail also links the two distinct shopping areas; Brislington Hill - on the busy A4 and the area’s main high street - Sandy Park Rd. To participate in the trail, pick up one of the beautiful maps (hand-drawn by local artist Philippa Thomas and designers from Oak Design Studio) and visit as many of the businesses as you can throughout the month.
Kirsten from Make and Do said “ This is a brilliant place to be; Sandy Parks Rd is a friendly, old fashioned high street ; with all the other craft businesses such as get Knitted and Shiney Rocks nearby, and Bristol’s only sewing machine repair shop right opposite, it’s becoming a bit of a destination for Makers and Doers!” As part of the trail Bristol Pound (£B) will be holding a sign up event 4-9pm on Thursday 19th March at Café Grounded. The restaurant are offering a 12” pizza for the discount rate of (£B10) to anyone who signs up on the evening.” For more information check out the Shop Brislington website www.shopbrislington.co.uk and follow the latest updates on facebook www.facebook.com/ShopBrislington and twitter @ShopBrislington.

Make The Most Of March At Lynne Fernandes New Website
New Designs
Unbeatable Offers
I’m not great with the cold and dark, so the arrival of March always gives me a lift. This March in particular we have a great new collection of eye wear designs. New Design Trend For Spring Design trends are moving to more challenging materials such as Ronit Furst, Jono Hennessey, Carer Bond and William Morris. We also have the latest Ray Bans, Oakley's, Hackett, Nike and CK. New to us is Super Dry to launch their collection in Bristol. If you like their designs, tell us we will hold more. Exciting New Website This month we’ve launched our new website. We’re hugely excited by the increased functionality this offers us and you. For the first time you will be able to book your appointment online, you will be able to order contact lenses at any time via your smart phone, tablet or computer and you will be able to research eye conditions and treatments options in Bristol. Have a look at lynnefernandes.co.uk In March we have an unbeatable offer on Crizal spectacle lenses You can get a complimentary second pair of spectacle lenses with every purchase of Crizal lenses. It’s a great opportunity to have two new pairs of glasses at a great reduced price. Crizal spectacle lenses reduce glare, scratches, smudges, dust, water and UV, giving you superior vision whilst eliminating all the annoying factors that come with wearing glasses.
We’ve just heard that our wonderful director Lynne Fernandes, has been shortlisted for Optometrist of the Year. Lynne has created the unique clinical atmosphere at our practice, works for NHS England to improve optometrist’s clinical standards, with the UK Glaucoma Eye Surgeons to present on patients and primary care views and has even styled her own collection of handmade frames. She is an inspiration for all of us, we are very proud. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists we don’t believe in giving you a ‘spare’ pair of specs, every pair we dispense has a primary purpose, they aren’t for keeping in the back of a dusty cupboard. Your complimentary pair can be clear or sunglass Crizal prescription lenses and when combined with the fabulous frames we currently have in stock you can achieve two completely different yet stylish looks. As we are independent optometrists, we treat you as an individual and give your vision the time and attention it deserves. Unlike some retail chains, we have the freedom of choice and only recommend the right products specifically for you. When wondering if you need two new pairs of glasses, ask yourself how many pairs of shoes you have. You would never compromise with only one pair so don’t compromise on your vision and eye health. Come in and see us today for some expert advice and to have access to the quality of vision you have only ever dreamed of.

Hengrove Pharmacy Hengrove Lane Bristol BS14 9DB 0117 300 5446
Ovarian Cancer - Awareness Hengrove Pharmacy will be contributing each month for your regularly updated health fix. To kick off this month’s edition we will be writing a short informative article for the ladies on OVARIAN CANCER. During March we have National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month where the public will be asked to focus on this illness to see if they or somebody they know might be affected by this curable illness. Ladies have a one in 54 chance of having OC but treatment options become limited if it is spotted late. Remember: If in doubt: Check it out! Ovarian cancer occurs when abnormal cells within the ovaries begin to multiply causing growths (or tumours) that can disrupt the normal functioning of the reproductive organs. Most of these growths fortunately are benign which means they won’t spread to other parts of the body and are harmless. Some however are cancerous or malignant and can be life-threatening and urgent medical referral is needed for their assessment and removal. Benign tumours may also need to be removed but they are rarely life-threatening. Symptoms It is important to diagnose and catch these cancers early as it’s much easier to nip them in the bud before they grow and take over most of the ovary or spread to other parts of the body. The symptoms that can lead to an early diagnosis are:
Persistent stomach pain
Needing to wee more often
Persistent bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full after eating
Back pain
Tiredness
Change in bowel habit (constipation/diarrhoea) that’s different from your usual pattern
Sometimes people mistake these symptoms for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) as the two can appear quite similar. Remember that IBS pain affects mainly 20-30 year olds for the first time and the pain it causes is usually worse after meals or during periods of stress. The Pain of ovarian cancer is persistent and relentless and may affect older people. Even if you are unsure it’s best to get these symptoms checked out. Ask at the pharmacy if you are not clear and do not panic. Sometimes pelvic ultrasounds and blood tests will show that these symptoms are caused not by Ovarian Cancer but two other conditions eg. Ovarian cysts or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. These are non-threatening and treatment options are available. 20. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline.com
Risk Factors Risk factors that can increase your risk of having Ovarian Cancer are as follows:
Smoking
Obesity
Using oestrogen-only HRT
Not having any children
Not Breast-feeding
Having your first child after the age of 30
Starting your period before 12
Going through the menopause after the age of 55
Remember if you are unclear on any of these, or want help/reassurance please ask in-store at Hengrove Pharmacy or phone us on 0117 300 5446. Remember advice is also available to help you reduce your risk profile by for eg. stopping smoking or losing weight. If you don’t have internet access, then staff at Hengrove Pharmacy can provide you with use of one of our PCs in our private and confidential Consultation Room. If you have a family history of breast and ovarian cancer or two or more members on the same side of your family had ovarian cancer before the age of 50 then you might have contracted a faulty gene that increases your risk of having it also. Some types of OC occur in younger women and the risks increase with age especially after 50 years of age. 21.
